Marking for road widening on various roads

The city corporation has done marking and survey work again at various roads in the city which include Ramdev Galli, Ramling Khind galli. Marking on other roads Kanda Market, Raviwar peth, Kalmath road will done in the coming days.

However before the marking is done no permission has been taken from the Master plan committee formed by the corporation. Infact it was said all the decisions of road widening would be taken after consultation of this committee but the same has not happened said Councilor Sarita Patil.ramdev-galli-widen

Roads for road widening –

Mensi Galli – 40 feet

Jati math- Hemukalani Circle Ramling Khind galli – 60 feet

Ramdev Galli – 45 feet

Sheetal Hotel to Mali Galli – 30 feet

Chavat Galli to Kaliagaar Galli – 40 feet

Residents and shop owners say that the corporation is saying that the encroachments would be demolished in some time. But Residents/shop owners said the buildings in which we are doing business were built before 1950, and how is that our structures are now called as encroachments. Above all no notices have been sent to any property owner as of now. So without any notice in writing how can someone just inform orally and demolish our building, said shop owners and residents.

No one is against development but the same must be done according to the law. A few shop owners also question the timing of the road widening now at the juncture of commencement of the monsoon. As the structures are very old and almost all built with load bearing it wouldn’t be easy to repair them as well.

Shop owners/residents also say what is the guarantee that after road widening hawkers will not intrude on the roads, and sighted examples of Kade Bazar and Ganpat galli where even after road widening it made no difference due to hawkers on the street.

DC assures no action will be taken who have a stay order in Ramdev Galli

The residents and traders met the DC N Jayram this morning and brought to his notice the Stay order issued by the Hon high court, which states “Stay on dispossession till the next date of hearing.”

The DC categorically said that no action would be initiated on the properties which have got a stay from the court.

In the Writ petition filed by the residents and traders in the high court they have made an appeal, that they are in favor of development and it is the need of the hour, but the same must be implemented as per the laid down procedure and law. It has also come to the notice that Corporation commissioner has spoken to media persons stating he will remove all the encroachments.
Speaking to AAB, Advocate Ashok Potdar said that, the properties which will be dispossessed if the master plan is implemented are very old and were constructed way back in 1940’s when there was no CDP plan in force. Hence terming all buildings as encroachments is not fair and also not according to law.

Mentor On Road – in Belgaum

A grand ‘Mentor on Road’ project aimed at supporting SME’s rural enterprises, startups & young professionals who seek guidance & networking support for their business, talent and ideas, has started from May 4, 2015. The purpose of the “Mentor on Road” initiative is to meet SMEs in different locations – tell them ideas of different ideas to add value in the total supply chain & thus generate employment.

The Chief Mentor Mr. Jagat Shah was in Belgaum on 11th & 12th May 2015 & had interactive sessions with staff & students from GIT collage, Members of the Foundry Cluster, Members of TiE Belgaum/Hubli @ IMER, Forum of Entrepreneurs, Association of Honaga Industrial Area & the Gujarati Samaj.mentor-on-road belgaum

He highlighted that the contribution of the Agriculture to GDP has dropped in the last decades and that of the manufacturing has remained stagnant @ 15%. He said the “Make in India” project is to generate more employment opportunities for the youth else what we see as a boon will turn in to a bane. “The Make in India project is mis-understood as it is for the foreign companies to come and Make in India – but it is not so” he said. “The government has come out with a list of 180 items which India purely imports – can we not make them in India & why” – he asked. If there are any limitations in doing so the government wants to know & help the industries by getting them the necessary support. He sighted various success stories of collaborations, innovations & marketing techniques. He urged the need to add value to the total supply chain by novel ideas – like instead of allowing the tomato’s to rot – make a tomato sauce & preserve – this will help the farmer & will also generate employment through such industries.

During the interactions with the sections of the industry following issues were highlighted to him as the need of the hour by the SMEs in Belgaum

  • Non Availability of Quality Skilled Manpower
  • Trouble in getting people for work due to the various government governmental schemes which gives free-bees/subsidy to the unemployed
  • Requirement of better Air connectivity
  • Limitations on availability of up-to-date technology
  • Difficulties with international patenting
  • Difficulty with “Single Window” clearances – delays in sanctioning permissions etc.
  • Need to simplify tax structure – need to bring in GST
  • Difficulty due to differential state policies – e.g. power tariff in Shinoli-Maharashtra is higher than Karnataka thus making manufacturing uncompetitive. (Similarly Octori)
  • Expectation from the Government to see that the recession goes off as soon as possible
  • Need of an Industrial Park in Belgaum

Mr. Dhananjay Patel & Mr. Vinayak Lokur coordinated the various events.

The project will cover 18 states, 27 cities, mentoring 6000+ companies by travelling 9400+ kms cross country. Cities to be covered under the project include Ahmedabad, Surat, Nashik, Pune, Belgaum, Panaji, Mangaluru, Kochi, Madurai, Coimbatore, Mysore, Vijayawada, Vizag, Raipur, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Patna, Varanasi, Kanpur, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Delhi, Jaipur and Indore. The 65 day long project will conclude on July 7.

At the end of the tour a report will be submitted to the Prime Minister’s task force for SME’s

Initially for a period of one year a local mentor is selected in each of the city who will act as a coordinator to guide and support the businesses for international market linkage & Make in India. He will also act as the bridge to communicate the policy related needs of the industry to the government.

For Belgaum Mr. Vinayak Lokur has been appointed as the local mentor. He can be contacted at 0 94484 73760 for further details/assistance.

I am your own Belagavi, aka Belgaum, aka Belgao and erstwhile Venugram..

by Sameer Majli

Welcome back. I guess the first piece worked well and nothing quite motivates as well as attention does. I have been following the number of likes on Facebook and it’s fuel enough to prompt me to churn out another piece of writing. I am a city and I guess I shouldn’t really have a mind like humans do but I think I have been around all of you long enough to inculcate certain habits typical to the human self.

belagavi-feildsAwesomeness has never really been my forte cause I have not really been blessed with the majestic flow of a river through my self and neither have I been fortunate enough to have a much cherished mountain top nor the ethereal beauty of a lush green valley. I used to have a green blanket of the lovely forest wrapped around my self but like many other transient things, it’s history now. The forests made way first for cultivation, then human settlement and now the incessant cacophony of the forger’s deeds rings across the space that they have allocated for industry. The waste emerging out of industry has for more than a while been choking the fertility of the soil. The land which once promised and delivered a surplus crop is struggling to come to terms with the mineral imbalance. The paddy no longer has the lingering fragrance of the Basmati that enticed the senses in its own unique way across acres and acres of land. The Basmati town, isn’t that another title that you had bestowed upon my humble self?tree-cutting

They say that development comes with a price. Am I not the one who really understands how steep the costs of human advancement have been? The towering ring of the bamboo forest has been chopped to the soil and I have been stripped of other natural adornments that I once boasted about. No wonder they altered my name from Venugram to other preferences of their own. All said and done, I have to be patient. I understand, just like you think I should, that my prime duty is to accommodate the needs that seek to satisfy human whims and fancies. The transition from temperate and moderate to extreme has befallen as anticipated and I bear the brunt of it as much as you do. The whole of nature is at human disposal and you have, maybe, just taken it all as part of an obvious eventuality; some and maybe most are largely oblivious of the outcome. But if you can take it in your stride, then so should I, isn’t it so?

Large trees that rose to the skies out of my bosom have been toppled down to nothingness. First you made furniture with it and I was renowned as a furniture town. I am and have always been what you have made me to be. I never uttered a single word, the excesses touched limits and now, large expanses of me are lying around being labelled as ‘barren’. The logic was and will always be simple. If you take one, then at least have the presence of mind to make another if not more. That’s the law of mother nature. Pity that we couldn’t adhere to it.

A few days back you shaved off an entire stretch to pave the way for smooth transit to nearby destinations. With each hack of the axe, each whirring of the mechanized saws there was an almost arrogant display of human might. Each unkind stroke took away a part of me. I never understood the urgency and still don’t since that road of convenience that you promised yourself is still fiction. Along with the trees you took away a part of the settlements and the human anguish was sheer torture. Had the deed been left to an apt moment, the shade would have lingered long enough to fulfill its cause. Neither have you accomplished what you prepared for nor have you taken effort to line up the cleared space with fresh trees to provide the tranquility of their calming shade to your future generations. The cleared spaces will soon fill up with a concrete jungle of business assortments that seeks to grab the opportunity offered by the traveler taking the path but the beauty will never be quite the same again. Mother nature is plentiful in her commitments. Plant a few trees and she soon makes a canopy that’s quite wonderful to drive through. Isn’t it time for a little conscious effort? Shouldn’t there be a better discretionary sense to the whole state of affairs?

Trees of Belgaum- The Cannonball Tree

by Swatee Jog

Belgaum is known for its rich flora, home to many rare trees. Move around Belgaum and you can still find several trees with colourful, fragrant flowers. One rare tree that is found in Belgaum is the Cannonball tree, also known as Kailashpati, with the Latin name Couroupita guianensis gained from French explorer and botanist J.F. Aublet in 1775 when he discovered it. An evergreen tree, it is a member of the Brazil-nut tree family. The tree, native to the southern Caribbean and northern parts of South America, has been known in India for at least 3,000 years, where it is so revered that it is often found growing at temples, especially dedicated to Lord Shiva.Cannonball Tree belagavi Cannonball Tree belagavi

It gets its name from the size of its fruits that look similar to cannon balls and which make a loud thud when they burst upon falling to the ground. A fruit falling on your head could cause serious injury and hence, many countries stick a board to warn passers-by about its presence. The fruits grow clinging to the bark of the tree and not on its foliage. Flowers first appear on the bark, dark orange in color with a sharp sweet smell.

These flowers are offered to Lord Shiva because the structure of the flower that resembles a snake hood. Only 5 cannonball trees are known in Belgaum, one in the Belgaum fort, one opposite The Maruti temple in Hindwadi, two at the animal’s park (Science Park) at Budhwar Peth and one at the RLS college campus. In order to trace this rare and beautiful tree, we appeal to the citizens of Belgaum to let us know the location so that it can be mapped.

We, at Bharatesh Education Trust, are in the process of planting more of this tree, however, the horticulture department does not have this sapling and neither does any nursery in Belgaum. It is, however, available online, which is the way we are ordering it for further propogation.

Mahveer Bhavan to Third gate Khanapur road on Commissioners Radar

Commissioner Ravi Kumar visited the stretch from Mahveer Bhavan to Third gate on Sunday morning and told the one or two shops that were open to clear the encroachments in a couple of days.

It may be recalled that, the Corporation commissioner had come to lime light after he took up the demolition work from Third gate to Peeranwadi. But the other side of the story even after 5 months of demolition on that road nothing has moved except that all the trees have been chopped. The gutter and road work could not begun due to dearth of funds it is understood.khanapur_road_widen1khanapur_road_widen1

The Mahaveer Bhavan to Third gate is planned to be a 120 feet road and is under the PWD. Many residents and traders have taken a stay from the High court.

It would be very interesting to see as the Mayor Kiran Saynak also has his shop on the same road.
Citizens in the city are demanding that the incomplete projects must be first completed and then undertake the new ones.

The Maratha Mandir to Mahveer Bhavan road is almost done but the Basveshwar circle has not been realigned which was part of the plan, which is causing huge traffic jams and minor accidents each day.
The authorities must finish the work and then go ahead with the next one.

Tree Hacked to show up hoarding?

Tree Chopped near Sanchayni Circle

With major traffic in the city passing by the Sanchayani Circle, Dharmveer Sambhaji Circle where city’s more than 40% of commercial hoardings are put up. The Area is under the cantonment but I guess this gives the Cantonment enough moolah that more permissions are given. Its good way to make moolah but why at the cost of trees.
The entire tree was chopped off on Monday morning whereas efforts could have been made to place the hoarding some meters away?

But who cares for mother nature?
Wouldn’t it be better that a few branches could be chopped why the entire tree?

Residents say there is no need of Railway over bridge at Kapileshwar road

The residents, traders and others from Kapileshwar Road, Tangdi Galli, Bhandur galli, SPM road today gave a memorandum to ADC Praveen Kumar and spoke at length with him about the difficulties of construing a Railway Over bridge (ROB) at Kapileshwar gate.

They say, the Kapileshwar road was marked as 45 feet and widening to that extent was also done on one part of the railway gate. Everyone have constructed their buildings after the said road widening and now the new CDP plan makes the road a 80 feet road. And the residents will have to again demolish their buildings which is not fair.rob-protest

The residents also said that the main cause of traffic jam at the gate is the way of flow of traffic and if the same is regulated correctly the entire traffic can be cleared even after the gate opens in 3 mins. Its only that each one must adhere to the traffic rules and only 2 wheelers and autos should be permitted and officially the road from Kapileshwar temple towards Bhandur Galli is a one way, but no one adheres to it.

The ADC said that he would call a meeting with the railway dept, BUDA and Corporation in the coming days where the residents will also make their stand clear.

Indigo Airlines interested in Belagavi Tirupati flight

The Pudhari has published a news which is very angelic to the people of the city. Sources have confirmed that a team from Indigo Airlines visited Sambra airport to see the feasibility of operating a Belagavi to Tirupati Flight.

There is a lot of traffic on this route and most who visit Tirupati then also Visit Mahalaxmi at Kolhapur. Hence this route makes sense for sure. indigo
But currently Indigo has only Airbus A320-200 in its fleet. As of now only ATR 72 type smaller planes can make a landing here in Sambra. The runway expansion is in its final stage and it could be possible that the visit of the officials was to just see the ground reality check at the airport and also the viability options and logistics study.

Sources from the airport say the expanded runway could be opened in tow months time or after the monsoon.

So if Indigo wants to start a flight now it must lease ATR type planes or else it will happen only when the runway expansion work is complete.
