Honest Government babu honored by citizens at Belagavi

It is said, “In bureaucracy, honest officer is an orphan”.

Today, being honest seems to be a challenge in itself and an unwise decision. People prefer those who are diplomatic and not forthright.

Nagappa Talavar who works at the BUDA office was honored today by Mahant Vakkund and his friends for being honest in his work. BUDA commissioner N Ravindra was also present during the felicitation.IMG_9835

Speaking to AAB, Mahant said, “Every one sucks in BUDA. For paying my house tax at his desk just to pay Rs 675/- he directly asked me 3000 extra.

I approached this gentleman Nagappa Talavar and with frustration when I went with documents and a bribe and told him that please don’t delay my work and finish at the earliest.

But this gentleman, returned my money and honestly said “Sir I am not here for this kind of work. Please don’t pay me this and I don’t do my work for such money. The Govt pays for the work I do and I am satisfied.”

St. Joseph’s Convent High School turns 125 !

In 1890, Venugram (also Belgaum or Belagavi), was a small hamlet of just 20,000 odd persons who frowned upon the education of girls. However, since it had been declared a British Cantonment, it was the destination of several British Officers who, arriving with their families, desired to have a secular education, like in England, for their daughters.

St. Joseph’s Convent High School Belagavi

St. Joseph’s Convent High School Belagavi

The British officers here, both civilians and military, petitioned the Archbishop of Goa and the Patriarch of the East Indies to establish an English Medium School in Belgaum (now Belagavi) for girls. The Archbishop in turn, requested Mother Stella of the Canossians in Hong Kong to spare a few of her nuns for this proposed School in Belagavi.

Mother Stella sent five sisters by a ship that almost capsized in a storm in the South China Seas. The ship reached Cochin in 1890 and the Sisters made their way to Belagavi, covering some of the distance by bullock cart. On arriving here they purchased an old bungalow and started St. Joseph’s School in 1891.

The Canossian Sisters

In those days, Belagavi used to be ravaged by the plague epidemic regularly. Sacrificing their own lives, and braving many hardships, the intrepid Canossian Sisters worked tirelessly to educate Belgaum’s girl-children.

For one hundred and twenty-five years now, the Canossian Sisters have taught the children of Belgaum the importance of discipline, the values of compassion and kindness, the joy of giving and helping and of trusting God. Along with a quality education they have given the children a moral compass.

TiE – My Story session an inspiration for entrepreneurs

‘My story’ session with the most inspiring entrepreneurs of India organized by IMER in association with TiE (The Indus Entrepreneur), Hubli chapter on 17.01.2015

IMER in association with TiE, Hubli chapter organized ‘My Story” session on 17.01.2015 at IMER, where-in the following most inspiring entrepreneurs of India shared their entrepreneurial story with the entrepreneurs, academicians, aspiring entrepreneurs and students of Belagavi.

Gautam Ostwal, President, TiE, Hubli chapter welcomed the gathering and gave a detailed presentation on the objectives of TiE and the regular flagship events organized by TiE to foster entrepreneurship in the region.

Signing of MoU between IMER and TiE

The event began with a formal ceremony where-in an important MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was signed between IMER and TiE, Hubli chapter, making IMER an Institutional member of TiE so that regular events, to promote and foster entrepreneurship in Belagavi, can be organized. Sri. Rajendra. K. Belagavikar, Chairman, Governing Council, IMER and Sri. Gautam Ostwal, President, TiE, HUbli chapter exchanged the MoU that was signed during the ceremony.

Story of Sri. Arunachalam Muruganatham, Founder and CEO, Jaishreee Industries, a social entrepreneur from Tamilnadu

Sri. Arunachalam Muruganatham, Founder and CEO, Jaishreee Industries, a social entrepreneur from rural Coimbatore shared his entrepreneurial journey with the audience. Sri. Muruganatham, popularly known as ‘Muruga’ is a son of handloom weaver and was a school dropout. When he saw his wife ‘Shanti’ hiding rag cloth pieces and used papers, which she used during menstruation periods as sanitary napkin pads, he was shakened and started dreaming about ‘How he can address this serious hygiene and health related problem- which in fact was not the problem of Shanti alone but 95% of the women population of India who use rag cloth and used paper as sanitary napkin pad till date’. For nearly two years he kept on designing and developing low cost sanitary napkin pads and conducted experiments and field trials on his wife, sisters and himself (which was amazing) as other women from his neighborhood and city abused and discouraged him. But he was very clear in his thoughts and didn’t lost hope. He persevered and somehow convinced the medical college students to use the same and give the feedback.

After struggling for nearly five years, he developed low cost sanitary napkin pad manufacturing machine costing around Rs. 65,000.00 and gave them to women groups across India so that they can earn livelihood out of the same and simultaneously solving this hygiene and health related problem. The commercial machine used by the leading manufacturers like; Johnson and Johnson, HUL, and Procter and Gamble cost around 3.5 Crores and the total investment required was around 200 Crores. Currently around 3000 women groups across India and 16 other countries are using this machine and earning their livelihood. He has bigger plans laid out in the near future which he call as ‘PINK REVOLUTION’ through which he want to penetrate into 106 developing countries simultaneously and convert the social problem into livelihood opportunity for millions of women.

Considering all this TIME magazine placed him in its list of ‘100 most influential people in the world’ and has honored him.

During his interaction he advised the entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs of Belagavi to have a damn clarity on the problem that they want to solve. Bigger the problem, better will be the opportunity. Ongoing low cost and high speed trial and error experimentation, D-tailing (dwelling into the finer details of the problem without worrying too much on Retailing and Etailing), and thinking beyond marketing are important and crucial for an entrepreneurial success.

Story of Sri. Sachin Kate, Founder and CEO, Clear car Rentals, a young entrepreneur from Maharashtra

Sri. Sachin Kate also shared his entrepreneurial story with the audience. Sachin hails from a small village from Sonpet Taluka of Aurangabad district from Maharashtra. Like “Muruga’ Sachin also made a humble beginning and started his entrepreneurial journey with selling of newspapers, milk and bread when he was in sixth standard. He started earning Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3000 a month while studying through working as a computer instructor. After his formal education (B.Sc in Computer Science and MBA) he worked for a travel agency for nearly six months and quit that job to start his own venture in IT sphere, which in fact was his dream.

With a capital investment of around Rs.25,000 he started his first IT company (Developing websites for companies from travel and hospitality sector) from his home itself with borrowed computers and furniture. His key strengths and expertise was in SEO (search Engine optimization) and clear emphasis and focus on travel and hospitality sector. Later he developed SAS (Software As Service) and Mobile application software for car fleet owners and started a Private Limited Company called ‘Clear Car Rentals’ and formed strategic alliance with the companies like; Makemytrip.com, Cox and Kings, etc. to fulfill the last mile connectivity needs of the travelers across the country. Today the company turnover is 40 Crores and want to reach to 100 crores by next year and his company is valued around Rs. 400 Crores. The company has its presence in more than 300 cities all across India.

During the interaction he advised the entrepreneurial fraternity of Belagavi to have a clear focus and look for genuine problems which are bothering people and try and solve the same in a frugal way, cost effective manner and using a scalable business model. According to him money is not at all an issue. What is paramount for entrepreneurs is Idea and the Team. If these two are in place money will automatically follow.

In total the event was a great success. The entrepreneurial crowd of Belagavi really cherished the interaction to the fullest and gave a standing ovation to the above entrepreneurs. Mr. Parag Sarraya, executive from Bella Vista, introduced the entrepreneurs and moderated the interaction session. Sri. Rajendra. K. Belagavikar, Chairman, GC, IMER, was the master of ceremonies and proposed vote of thanks. Sri. Gautam Samant, Sri. Swapneel Patnekar, Sri. Amit Kalakundri, and Dr. Purushottam Bung honored the entrepreneurs by giving memento.

Kutumb – Home for HIV infected children

HIV is still a stigma in this part of the world. The brunt is borne more by the children as they are discriminated in school and public places. Needless to say the poorest among them suffer the most. kutumb-belagavi-1

With an aim to serve these children “SAIUJYAM” an NGO started ‘Kutumb’ where such children are identified with the help of various doctors, counsellors, freelancing social workers etc. Each case is studied by interacting with their parent/guardian and also with the child. Thereafter, their medical papers are scrutinized and then with the consent of all, deserving among them is taken into the care of ‘KUTUMB’.kutumb-belagavi

‘KUTUMB’ currently houses 13 children, 7 Girls and 6 boys. “Kutumb” provides children with decent and hygienic accommodation with all necessary amenities separately for girls and boys. A small play ground in the backyard wherein the children spend their time for recreational activities. Properly ventilated bedrooms have been provided with all necessary amenities including wardrobe to store clothes, books and other amenities.
Being HIV+ they have a weak immune system and are susceptible to life threatening diseases. To overcome this, the children are provided with a balanced nutritious food recommended by dietician as per the need of each child. In view of the fact that most of the children are under ART (Anti Retroviral Treatment) regime, they are also susceptible to immense side effects such as ulcers, frequent diarrhoea, vomiting and giddiness which needs to be subdued with various supplements and antidotes.
The in-house nurse, on the directions of the doctors, takes necessary steps to prevent opportunistic infections, ensures personal hygiene of each child and also maintains their medical reports. Every child who is of schooling age is admitted to a school and given proper education. “KUTUMB” is home for these children and they are treated like any other child in a normal home. They are assisted with homework and school assignments and also made computer literate here. Each child is made aware of his duties and responsibilities towards society, kindness to fellow human beings and respect to elders. In “KUTUMB”, each child is made aware that the other children living with them are their brothers & sisters. This enables them to enjoy love and companionship of a sibling.

The children are given a break from studies at least twice a year for rejuvenation and recreation. They are taken on educational tours to places of importance and provided an opportunity to visit historical places, zoos, museums and important landmarks in different cities.

One could also volunteer his/her time for ‘Kutumb’ for Creating awareness about blood donation / pledging of eyes etc, Teaching children Academic Subjects, Computer Education, Physical Fitness (Yoga / Exercise / Aerobics), Dance, Drama, Singing, Painting, Rangoli etc.

125 years of St. Joseph’s

by Swatee Jog

School leaves fond memories once you’ve passed out of its hallowed portals. Till then, many wait for the day they’ll be out of its gate. Not for us, though. School was always a place I’d long to belong. It never fails to make me nostalgic. It has even reunited us, Josephites of the 1991 batch. St. Joseph’s still has that charm, an aura of exclusivity, though I’d apologize for sounding snobbish even while I am not. Everything about it has personality, be it the three playgrounds, the famous Tamarind tree, the huge gulmohars, the cellar, the Chapel, the drawing room on the fourth floor, the nuns or even the teachers. The school itself has a personality, a unique identity very few can boast of. It is so much like a grandmother who is surrounded by children, who keeps smiling and touching these kids with affection. Back in 1980 when my father chose this school, he must have known all of this, for he was a man of vision. I recall Sr. Annie interviewing me and I was just having a jolly time of my own. I still don’t know what made her grant me admission! It remains a feat to this day to get in this school because you get in on merit and nothing else. Mother Pasquinha was the principal then and somehow, inspite of her Italian origin, her tall fair matronly figure, we were never afraid of her. I, all of 5, would frequently enter her cabin to run some errands for my teachers and she’d hand me some chocolates.

The Tamarind tree so synonymous with St. Joseph’s Convent Belagavi

The Tamarind tree so synonymous with St. Joseph’s Convent Belagavi

St. Joseph’s has had a lovely run of 125 years all thanks to its selfless nuns, the extraordinary teachers, students who never forgot the sanctity of school and alumni like us, who’ve cherished memories. What started from small tiled buildings is now a huge institution. Back then, apart from our school, there was the Kannada medium school till Std. 7 and the Teacher’s Training Institute. The Kannada school had, behind its building, a much sought after wood rose plant. I have got hold of those lovely flowers many times. A good school has all the infrastructure- the hall, the grounds, the labs, the works, but schools that are fondly cherished also have a distinct feel – one of security, one that fosters growth, teachers who command respect and are not feared, steps, corners, benches that allow friendships to bloom, security for a child who leaves the mother’s hand and enters, opportunities for everyone to learn and develop, exposure to the best knowledge of the world, the desire of those in charge to provide everything that shapes lives. I can recall all of these things in my school. Teachers like Ms. Kamal, Ms. Tawamani, Ms. Shastri, Ms. Gouri, Ms. Kanti, Ms. Farida who made science so easy that even today I remember her dictation, Ms. Benjamin who worked with us till we got that perfect cursive handwriting ( and hence, almost all Josephite’s of my time have identical handwriting) and my favourite, Ms. Philu, whose knowledge and zest for all things beautiful filled young girls’ minds with dreams and the strength to make them possible.

I don’t remember a single episode when we had problems during picnics, school annual days or sports meets. Everything used to be well planned, well executed. My parents rarely had to shell out any money for extracurricular activities, for they’d be managed by school. All we spent on was the craft stuff, the dress for the annual day or the picnic fees. In middle school, we had Sr. Bridgette as our principal and then it was the vivacious Sr. Rose, who was a powerhouse in her frail frame. Many would recall her penchant for a well kept garden when she’d observe the gardener from our XA class and yell a loud ‘Basssuuu’ from two floors above to instruct him. She was instrumental in planning for the centenary celebrations in 1991 when we were in the Xth. We missed our annual picnic for that event, but we enjoyed the two day ceremony. It was Ms. Margaret Alva who was the Chief Guest and we had some performance that day. There was a special commemorative magazine published and a special centenary song as well, written by students.

St. Joseph still has its Social day and Passing out parade. The Social was a special one, and I’d hosted the one for my seniors. ( The IX std. students hosted Social for the Xth ). It was when they wore sarees and came out in all their finery. I still have that photo of mine when I’d worn a saree for the first time. St. Joseph’s was always famous for Volley ball and then when the spanking new basket ball court was built, the girls went on a winning frenzy.

All my memories of my days in school are as vivid as yesterday in my mind. I somehow loved the pink Tincture iodine in the office and forgot the pain when Ms. Julie applied it lovingly to every child who hurt herself with as much affection. I loved to peek into Ms. Tavamani’s room on the third floor whenever it was open, I loved the brilliant Dahlias that crowded the circular garden at the entrance, I loved the three grounds that served different purposes, so did I love the canteen in the corridor besides the tamarind tree where I’d had some great popcorn and rewdis, the piano in the hall, the wooden railings of the main stairs, the many steps, trees, the warm ambience. The school celebrates its post centennial silver jubilee this year. For us Josephites, it’s another milestone, a piece of cherished memory. May the institution flourish, may its students bring glory to it and may it be a harbinger of education for the nation.

The inauguration event saw the distribution of the official badges to the members of the club by the Chief Guests, and an array of beautifully clicked photographs by the members of the Clickr Kids group.
