BPL Update- The one ball game

bpl-15

by Chaitanya Halgekar
When Darshan Kadam, playing on 28, offered a simple catch at long off on the bowling of Parikshit Shetty, everyone at Union Gymkhana were stunned. So far he looked untroubled and his 28 runs included some eye pleasing strokes.

But on the third ball of the 8th over, he came down the track and lofted a good length delivery straight in the throat of long off fielder. That was a shot which a batsman would generally play when he is not getting runs and is desperate to score.

However, this was not the case with Patil. He played a beautiful punch off the back foot in the covers on the very first ball of the innings. That shot although yielded four runs, was worth a million dollars. Then in the next couple of overs he scored two more fours by hitting a tremendously powerful cover drive which went past three fielders and a splendid stroke on the leg side.

Then in the 6th over he took the attack to the opposition by belting a colossal six over commentary box. That ball easily traveled about 90 meters. After watching all these magnificent strokes, it was a clear Patil was on a rampage today. It was his day. He couldn’t do anything wrong.

But in the 8th over Parikshit Shetty did something which looked impossible. He unsettled Patil. And it took him just two balls to do that. The first ball went past the outside edge and Patil looked stunned. The next ball too posed tremendous questions as it beat the bat again.

By the time the third ball pitched on the wicket, Patil was out of his crease to smash hit without even thinking about the consequences. The result- a simple catch. It took mere two dot balls to break the concentration of Patil who it seemed to be invincible today.

Cricket is a high quality game for this same reason. A player can never get relaxed as every ball has the potential to destroy him. It takes only one six to spoil the figures of a bowler and on the other hand, one good ball can undone all the hard work of the batsmen.

This is Cricket. The one ball game. The one ball battle. You either go back or you stay there to continue the battle

BPL Update – The backfired strategy

by Chaitanya Halgekar
Death bowling has been one of the strong points of Anand’s Cricket Academy in Nitin Shirgurkar’s Belgaum Premier League. They have won more than twice solely on their effective death bowling.bpl-15

The reason behind their effective death bowling is their strategy of keeping the best bowlers for the final overs. Parappa Morade, the strike bowler is always used after 12 overs by skipper Ketaj Kolhapure. Akshay Juvekar, other prime bowler is also reserved for the final overs.

Today, in the qualifier game, ketaj Kolhapure again resorted to this strategy and brought Parappa in the attack in 14th over. But, the result was different. Although Parappa gave just 6 runs in his first over, he was smashed for 11 and 15 runs in his next overs.

This tremendous attack against Parappa forced Ketaj Kolhapure to choose Nityanand, the spinner over Parappa to bowl the final over. Thus, the strike bowler of Anand’s Cricket Academy, Parappa Morade couldn’t even complete his full bowling quota. The result- the opposition scored a massive total of 191 in 20 overs.

When asked about this backfired strategy Ketaj Kolhapure gave a rather simplified and logical reason, “Every day is not a Sunday. On same day they will bowl well and on some days then won’t. It’s ok.”

It is important to analyze the reason behind the failure of this well-thought out and so far effective game plan. When Parappa came to bowl the score was 120 for 2 wickets and two very experienced batsmen were playing. Plus they had the license to go for the kill as plenty of wickets were in hand.

And this is very it went wrong for Parappa. The batsmen studied him in his first over and went after him in his next overs. Parappa was simply surprised by this attack and offered no challenge.

Of course this one backfired strategy alone cannot be blamed for Anand Cricket Academy’s loss. But at the same time, this tactical error cannot be neglected. Because now in the knock-out stages even one mistake is enough to send teams back home.

Today’s Result

  1. Anand’s Cricket Academy vs. Neena Sports Club- Neens Sports Club won by 29 runs.
  2. Sairaj Yuvraj Warriors vs. Potdar Vijaya Cricket Academy- Sairaj Yuvraj Warriors won by 04 wickets.

As part of the visit to The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, they were briefed by Brig Santosh Kurup, SM**, the Commandant, The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre. The history of The Maratha Light Infantry dates back to 246 years during which the Maratha battalions participated in various wars & campaigns and earned many laurels for the nation. The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre is the cradle of soldiering where the recruits who come from civilian background are subjected to rigorous combat training spread over nine months. At the end of the training, they emerge as physically fit, mentally robust soldiers, motivated and ready to take on any challenge while serving the Army and Nation. The media team was shown a glimpse of important training events. The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre has innovatively incorporated the latest technologies with the standard military training to prepare the young soldiers to cope with emerging conflict scenarios.

The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre has also been an important Joint Foreign Training Node with foreign armies. USA, UK, China, Mongolia and Maldives are some of the countries who train regularly at the Regimental Centre.

The well-established Placement Cell undertakes placement of soldiers in various jobs after their retirement. The Regimental Centre is in regular touch with its war widows and needy battle casualties, and assists them in all their endeavours.

The media team was given an insight of how one of the oldest well known Regiments of the Indian Army has been actively participating in Nation Building. The battalions of the Regiment have participated in all Major Wars, Internal Conflicts, Counter Insurgency, Counter Terrorist Operations, Aid to Civil Authority and Disaster Management.

mlirc-belgaumContinuing with the visit, the media team also visited Headquarters Junior Leaders Wing. Maj Gen Rajbir Singh, VSM, Commander, Junior Leaders Wing briefed the media about modalities of training being imparted to Junior Leaders.

The Junior Leaders Wing, The Infantry School, Belgaum is one of the premier training establishments of Indian Army located at Belgaum, Karnataka. The Commando Course is considered as one of the toughest courses conducted across the world and works on the lines of the motto “The more you sweat in peace, less you bleed in war”.

Importance of handling and catching of snakes was also stressed upon during a demonstration on snake handling which included handling of various types of venomous and non-venomous snakes. There was also a demonstration on various techniques of Rock Craft training and on negotiation of various types of obstacles in Battle Obstacle Course area, thus giving an exposure to the toughness of training and importance of physical fitness required to make Commandos battle worthy.

The Commandos are put through a rigorous schedule during the course in Commando Wing and are made aware of their physical and mental thresholds. This elite institute trains approximately 1500 officers and men every year.

The Platoon Commanders Wing focus on training Junior Commissioned Officers & Non Commissioned Officers of the Indian Army, Friendly Foreign Countries, Para Military Forces and Central Police Organisations in the Platoon level tactics in war & peace thus empowering Junior Leaders to command their subunit in war & peace.

BPL update – Leading from the front

bpl-15

by Chaitanya Halgekar
As Ketaj kolhapure, captain of Anand Cricket Academy walked at the crease to bat, the scoreboard read 65 for 3 wickets in 11.5 overs. Tension was mounting in Anand Cricket Academy’s dough-out as their last chance of getting in the finals looked obscured.

At the toss, Raju Patil the opposition skipper said he would be more than happy to restrict the batting team under 150. However at the 12th over, reaching 150 looked almost impossible for Anand Cricket Academy.

Ketaj Kolhapure promoted himself at no.5, ahead of Akshay Juvekar who holds the record of scoring the fastest fifty in this tournament. In the previous match Ketaj was out for first ball duck.

Everything was against Ketaj when he faced his first ball. But things changed as he battled and battled hard at the crease. He first rotated the strike and then attacked the bowlers. The run-rate increased and hope was restored in Anand Cricket Academy’s dough-out.

Ketaj first registered a 26 runs vital partnership with Uttam Datta creating the platform and then belted 31 runs with Akshay Juvekar to provide the impetus. He was dismissed when the score was 135 in 18.4 overs.

During his stay at the middle, his team scored 70 runs in 41 balls. In this Ketaj’s contribution was 29 runs of 16 balls. However, the most important stat about his knock was that, in his entire innings he didn’t had a dot ball.

It was due to this unselfish, inspired and determined batting of Ketak Kolhapure, his team managed to score 146 runs in 20 overs.

Perhaps this is what they call, ‘leading from the front.’

Today’s Result

  1. Second Qualifier- Anand’s Cricket Academy vs. Sairaj Yuvraj Warriors- Sairaj Yuvraj Warriors won by 05 wickets.

Eat-be-talk sweet

Sankranti is the only Indian Festival that adheres to the English calendar every year, coming on the 14th or 15th of January. Following the sun’s position and its entry into the Makar Rashi exactly on the same date every year, this day marks the beginning of the Uttarayan. Have you wondered why the sun is rarely seen to the exact East? Half the year it is tilted to the south and from now on up to Diwali it will be tilted North. That is why the year is divided into Dakshinayan and Uttarayan. The cold conditions have peaked right now and what better way to soothe shivering souls than devour the sweets that are made during this time. Til laddoos, barfis made with dried coconut, ghee, sesame seeds(til), poppy seeds ( khaskhas), jaggery, edible gum and dry fruits, the bajra roti- brinjal bhaji-dollops of white butter menu and an array of chutneys shimmer in a laden plate on the day before Sankranti, also called Bhogi in North Karnataka and Maharsahtra. The main day demands the preparation of Gul-polis, with kneaded jaggery, poppy and sesame seeds, eaten with hot milk and ghee.

Belgaum and its adjoining areas continue the Sankranti fervor right upto Rathasaptami. The tilgul that we find today are most of the times made of sugar with some lime for the white effect. Try eating a fistful and you are guaranteed to get mouth ulcers. But try the home-made varieties, the not so white but tasty tilgul is made by coating every seed of sesame/ cashew in sugar syrup early in the morning, in the biting cold which lends it its unique spikes. You can also gorge on the ground nut/ cashew nut varieties of Halwa available at this time as also the jaggery and sesame revadi, so reminiscent of school day indulgences years ago.

Women bring out their shimmering black chandrakalas or any black saree and even tiny tots are draped in black. The colour absorbs the maximum heat and hence the custom. It must be the only time when womenfolk, even the orthodox ones, wear black which is an otherwise shunned colour. Another beautiful custom that comes with Sankranti is the Haldi Kumkum function where womenfolk are invited to each other’s house and served sweets along with a gift! This gift, also called vaan, is a thoughtful one, ranging from combs, kerchieves, peelers, small bags of sugar, coffee pouches, soaps, bowls, bottles of kumkum, bindi packets to the more elaborate dry fruit boxes or even sarees. Care is taken that no two households have the same gift and each time, a novel item makes its entry. If you think deeply, you can imagine the happiness in the minds of the middle-class womenfolk in the bygone era, to look forward and receive small gifts which only she is entitled to. It may not mean monetary profit, but the joy is what matters. It also presented itself as an opportunity to visit neighbours and was a way of networking! Sankranti also calls for the special custom of Bor-nhan or bathing kids of age 1-5 in a mixture of diced sugarcane and carrots, chocolates, green pods of horse-gram (harbhara), tiny pea pods, currency coins, tilgul, puffed rice (churmure) and the like amidst women and kids who gush to collect the delicacies.

Such warm rituals and customs makes Sankranti all the more endearing. A festival is meant to serve multiple purposes. If it brightens the harried souls, brings people together amidst laughter and spreads warmth, it has served its purpose. And it reminds us that it’s never out of time and place to eat sweet, be sweet, talk sweet.

Shell out extra for online electricity bill payment of HESCOM

Paying your electricity bill online may be convenient but it does not come cheap. HESCOM website charges an extra amount if one pays through their credit or debit card and residents are not amused.hescom-2

The total charges we calculated were 1.7% on the total bill amount for Internet banking and 0.839% for paying by debit card.hescom-1

RBI Circular says –
Levying fees on debit card transactions by merchants - There are instances where merchant establishments levy fee as a percentage of the transaction value as charges on customers who are making payments for purchase of goods and services through debit cards. Such fee are not justifiable and are not permissible as per the bilateral agreement between the acquiring bank and the merchants and therefore calls for termination of the relationship of the bank with such establishments.”

Merchants not supposed to levy fee on debit card transaction to customers

In fact, it is ironical that although electronic payments work out to be cheaper for banks than cash and cheque, they are inclined to charging merchants and customers for transaction charges on credit cards and debit cards whereas transaction charges involved in cash and cheque are almost nil.

What about credit cards?

For credit cards too, issuing banks do not charge customers any transaction fee, except in case of railway ticket booking through IRCTC and petrol surcharge. Yet, merchants levy transaction charge they face, on customers. You can stand up to them. Try asking them to share with you the bank clause that allows them to levy transaction charge on customers.

In this case as well, HESCOM is a MERCHANT according to the agreement with Billdesk(the payment gateway company) then isn’t this violation of the Rule. Worst part being you wont come to know about the extra charges until you log into your Bank site for payment.

Roads cannot be closed in Cantonment area

Belagavi is a Category II, split Cantonment, covering vast acreage (1776 acres) on both the Eastern and the Western side of Belagavi city.Belgaum-cantonment

Many of the roads are arbitrarily closed from time to time and we have to approach the High Court and the Supreme Court repeatedly to have our Fundamental Right of Movement restored to us. Currently about 6 roads are blocked.

Now the Defence Minister of India, Shri Manohar Parrikar, has taken a strong stand and ordered all the roads that have been closed in Cantonments opened forthwith. There are total of 122 roads covered in our 72 Petitions.
As per Section 258 of the Cantonments Act 2006 which empowers only the Cantonment Board to close a road in Cantonment, and that too only with the prior permission of the G.O.C. or the Principal Director.

The ministry’s order regarding adherence to legal procedure before closing roads in cantonment areas is a beginning towards this effort. The order will not apply to internal roads but to cantonment roads that link civilian areas. This will resolve many issues.

On Cantonment Boards, civilians are in a majority. The District Magistrate is a crucial member and all MPs and MLAs are special invitees to protect the interests of civilians.

There are 62 Cantonments in India and we are liaising with as many as possible to ensure a balance between civilian and military interests.

The Camera Phone syndrome

by Swatee Jog
Years ago, when we bought our first Nikon from the newly opened Harsha, we felt a sense of achievement. It was digital, had different modes and was compact, though it cost a bomb at that time. It was a revolution from my first Snapper camera bought at Ramannavar studios at Khade Bazar which didn’t even have a flash and hence I took my kid brother out in the sunlight for every click. That camera was bought for mere Rs. 350 in 1988. Often, I borrowed the detachable flash from my cousin. Then came the very famous Kodak KB10 which even had its own share of advertising. That camera, with flash, still remains the most cherished possession in my childhood cupboard till date.

selfie

A Crafie – Crazy selfie

Funnily enough, now I don’t use that Nikon anymore, since the time my big 5.5 “ phone can take superb pics. What is it about phone cameras that have made them so endearing? Firstly, perhaps the ease of handling just one device that can click, edit, filter, store, group, send via Bluetooth and even get uploaded on social media within minutes, without ever needing a whimper of a wire. We all experience the magic of the phone camera in our daily lives. At concerts, the phones flash brighter than the lights in the hall, the wedding hall sees enough selfies to fill hard disks, the college trips have different versions of the same and even an accident or a fire finds onlookers casually pulling out their phones and going clickety click.

Terraces, mirrors, the Fort Lake, college gardens and corridors, stairs, plain walls, Mr. Ronald McDonald, bikes, holding the car’s top are all good backdrops for a selfie. It’s all so easy and fun that a new kind of photo revolutions seems imminent. The lady at the clinic’s waiting room merrily shoots her kid frolicking and the college crowd happily uploads the selfie every few days. Just have a look at the Facebook profiles and you’ll find more selfies than actual members. Now there are newer terms, Groufie or group selfie ( which, I read, has been Trademarked by Huawei of China), Helfie (to show how hellish your bad-hair day has been), Belfie( well….), Drelfie ( taken in a drunken state), etc.
What is it about photos and human beings that even a small child smilingly poses for photos? Selfies, perhaps give the young ones a sense of well being when they have their best angle shot by themselves, without depending on a photographer. It’s a little awkward to ask somebody take your pictures all the time or when you look the best, again and again. Better to aim and shoot yourself. Selfies also make a person comfortable and brings out the informal look, at times innocent, at others- naughty. Tongues stuck out, winking eye, smaller chin, best profile forward…Ahhh! The pleasures of a selfie. At first, I’d cringe at the thought of a selfie, but now I realize it is not Narcissism but just a way to feel good. Today’s large screen cameras also allow for a good Groufie with at least 5-6 people easily fitting into the frame. And since no one’s out of the frame, it’s a joy fest literally. I see scores of college students around me especially during college fests or special programs, when the selfie and groufie craze becomes an epidemic. The boys bring on that stylish pose while the girls flatter their eyes and flaunt that pout for the camera. A picnic of the students can be followed minute by minute sitting at campus, what with students posting the selfies and groufies right from the station, to the halts and then at every possible event thereafter. Although the teenagers and the millennials use the phone camera more frequently, don’t discount the adults from this craze. Most of these photos may just get lost in the gust of time, but they give joy while they last and that’s what matters!

Makar Sankranti is being celebrated today and each one is sending wishes and sweets made of Til. Another highlight of the festival are the goodies made out of tilgul. Tilgul jewellery has become popular amongst newly married women as well as for babies. As per tradition, newly-married women are decorated in very special jewellery called the halwyache daagine’ (ornaments made of halwa’ or sugar coated sesame) and black sarees. Just married men and babies too could adorn with similar ornaments.

Tiger sighted again by Youths

Dhanaji Patil and Mashnu Patil, residents of Mendil village of Khanapur taluk, claimed they sighted a tiger at Abanoli, 30 km from Khanapur town, on Wednesday evening.

The Tiger roared at them but did not attack but as soon it roared the duo left the bike and ran away into the village.

Villagers often sight tigers and leopards. As all the tigers and leopard are not man-eaters, they claim they move fearlessly in the forest.

Dhanaji told he was visiting his sister in Abnoli village in the Khanapur jungle range when the incident happened. He and Mashnu had parked the two-wheeler a few metres  from the road in the jungle and walked to his sister’s residence. When they returned and were starting the bike, they noticed the animal in front of them.

Car Parking Fee to be hiked after Auction on Jan 30 to Rs.15 for every three hours at Bapat Galli

car-parking-bapat-galliDo not pay more than what you are supposed to pay. The next time you step into Bapat Galli make sure that you pay the parking fee prescribed on the boards put up by the City Corporation. The contractor who is entrusted with the collection of parking fee is allegedly violating the tender norms by collecting excess fee.

As per the new Auction Tender to be opened on January 30, 2015 the parking fees are as follows:

Cars – Rs.15 for every three hours

Bikes- Rs. 10 for every three hours

car-parking-bapat-galli-jan15The current fee structure is – Rs.5 for two wheelers and Rs.10 for Four wheeler for a duration of THREE hours. After the auction is done the new prices would be Rs.15 for cars from the earlier Rs.10.

We have been pressing on this subject, Are we being looted for Car parking in Bapat Galli, as one has to pay Rs.20 for three hours and there is no one hear. No boards put up even when the City Corporation itself is handling the Car parking currently.
