Lapses in killing the tiger

The killed tiger

Several lapses have been reported in the preliminary investigation by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in the killing of the man eater Tiger in Khanapur Taluka recently.

Standard operating procedures on handling tigers were not followed by the NGO concerned and the Forest Department. For radio collaring animals, permission from the Ministry of Telecommunications is mandatory. Radio frequency should be shared with the Forest Department, MoEF and the NTCA. This was not done in this case. No permission was taken for the radio collar.

Ms Suma Nagesh, convener of the Save Democracy Forum of Chikamagaluru, has held Rana George, member of the Wildlife Conservation Board, and Sanjay Gubbi, State Wildlife Board member, and some others, responsible for the death of the tiger. In a memorandum to the President on January 1, she alleged that Mr Rana George, who is also son of Home Minister K.J. George, and Mr Gubbi conducted unusual and useless experiments on the tiger by radio collaring it and leading to its death.

It may be recalled that the tiger killed on December 28, was relocated to Bhimgad reserve from Chikkamagaluru.

Inputs from DH and DC.

Anutai Kittur teacher Emeritus

by Praveen Kulkarni & Rajendra Belgaumkar
Adapted from an article published in the December issue of Paulite Link Magazine

Anuradha Kittur, known to all as Anutai, was born as Anusuya Nagesh Gunaji. Born in a very well to do family of the then Chief Officer of Belgaum Municipality, Mr. N. M. Gunaji, Tr. Kittur was one of the five children to her parents and had a fun filled childhood. She and her siblings grew up in fine upbringing, with a touch of religiousness, with recitation of verses from the Bhagvad Gita and other religious texts. Her range of hobbies included music, cycling, swimming, hockey, badminton, table tennis and hututu.

Anutai Kittur

Her schooling happened in Chintamanrao High School in the Shahapur suburb of Belgaum, after which she joint Lingraj College for her B.A. Degree. Her already gleaming eyes brighten up when she recollects her encounters with her male counterparts, during her college years.

When I asked her how and when she met Dr. Kittur, her future husband, she narrated the incident when she first met Dr. Kittur. They met at the Thread Ceremony of a relative, where she was frying wadas. With a twinkle in her eyes, she also lets out a secret, that Mr. Yeshwant Kittur had his bakery in camp, but later became a doctor because Tr. Kittur “did not wont a husband who worked in a bakery.” In an era when love marriages were unheard of, Tr. Kittur married Dr. Yeshwant on Sept. 8, 1940 and although Anusuya N. Gunaji became Anuradha Yeshwant Kittur, she remained Anu to her elders and Anutai to her youngsters.

The freedom she got from her in-laws, especially from her father-in-law was no different from what she got at home. Marriage did not stop her from pursuing her academics and social goals. She completed her B.A. Degree in 1941.

The teacher’s job in St. Paul’s High School came by accident. Anutai Kittur was in her husband’s clinic, busy cleaning the floor, when Fr. George Rego,S. J., the then principal of St. Paul’s walked in for a check-up. On enquiry, Anutai told him she was the Dr. Kittur’s wife and had a B.A. Degree, he said “What are you doing here? Would you like to be a teacher ?” So, she joined St. Paul’s and started off as a class teacher for Std. VII and taught Marathi and Sanskrit. She there after secured her M.A. and B.Ed Degrees. As a teacher, she was full of compassion for the boys. Boys used to be sent to the principal for any wrong doing. The then principal was known for the liberal pasting he meted out to young boys. After she got to witness one of the sessions, she stopped sending boys to the principal to save them from the special treatment.

At school, she was entrusted with the extra responsibility of the Ladies Auxiliary Committee, a group of like minded, dynamic and get-going women, who forwarded the spirit of “Service.” These ladies started a canteen that served wholesome food stuff. They also helped out deprived children, with there need of books, pens, uniform, shoes etc. As early as the 1950’s they began providing mid day meals for the less fortunate ones. Tr. Kittur was later appointed the Secretary of the Committee. In a lighter vein, she even notes that she served the school for 32years and drew pension for 39 years. Even now she spends all her earnings for social causes. It was Tr. Kittur who setup the first ‘Working Womens Hostel’ in Belgaum and was also actively involved with many institutions such as the Theosophical Society of India, various Womens groups and Mahila Vidyalaya.

Having lived a life full to the brim, she has also had her share of hard times. She recollected the sorrow of having lost her two sons Dr. Anil and Dr. Ramesh within six months of each other. Tr. Kittur has taken joys and sorrows, success and otherwise with great aplomb. It is probably her nature of taking everything in her stride, that has still kept her as strong as the Rock of Gibraltar.
She must be the second lady after the Queen of Kurndwad to drive a car in Belgaum then. Many of her times could recollect how she drove the car with one hand on the steering and one hand on the window.

Even at the ripe old age of 98, she feels there is so much more to be done in the society. The only thing that holds her back is her immobility, due to the stiffness in her legs.

She is still an inspiration not only to the young and the not so young, but to the people that know her and the lives of the people that she has touched. Armed with qualities like dedication, fearlessness, determination and loads of optimism, she is an indestructible humble, loving and a simple soul. Confidently battling her way up and fighting for women’s rights had given her a persona and an image that shook many a great men during her time.

The values instilled by her, have made many fearless, dedicated, hard working, high achievers in whatever tasks they undertake. Her charisma, courage, and intelligence her creative, affectionate and sociable personalities make her legendary not just confined to the Kittur family nor locally in Belgaum, but Globally.

Annapurneshwari” is a pure Vegetarian Restaurant located near Krishnadevraya (Kollapur) circle, Nehru Nagar. This is a pure Veg restaurant serving quality food at very reasonable price. It has a superb combination of South & North Karnataka food.  The Restaurant has a good ambiance  with a separate kids play area.

Food is served on the fresh green Banana leaf, It must be the first restaurant in Belagavi to serve the whole meal on the Banana Leaf.anapur-belagavi-2

The meal itself is wholesome- start with a welcome drink, two types Vegetables, Junka, Salad, curd, Roti (for Roti’s you have 4 options Soft Jawaar roti, Wheat Chapati, Crisp Jawaar roti and Crisp Saji roti to select from) then followed by Steamed Rice, Ghee, Samber, Papad and to finish with Sweet. 4 Varieties of chutneys and pickle will add that zing to the palate.

The lunch and Dinner timing of the place is 12.00 pm to 4.00 pm & 7.00 pm to 10.30 pm respectively.

This place is well kept clean & tidy, staff is courteous and attentive. They might have to increase the service speed. I guess Since the restaurant is new they are yet to get accustomed to it.anapur-belagavi-1

BPL Update – The traditional way of batting

bpl-15by Chaitnaya Halgekar

Domnick Fernandes of Sairaj Yuvraj Warriors scored 33 in his first 21 balls. The next 9 balls were belted for 37 runs including 4 sixes and 3 fours. His total score- 70 runs of 30 balls. Strike rate of 210.

It is often believed that T20 is a format where a batsman has to just go and hit the ball. ‘See the ball, hit the ball’ is supposed to be mantra for batsmen in T20. But this is not the case every time.

Some of the best T20 innings in the world have started slowly and then gained momentum. In T20 World Cup final of 2012, Marlon Samuels scored 26 runs in 37 balls. He then stepped on the gas and smashed 52 runs of the next 21 balls. His final score was 78 runs of 56 balls.

In the semi-final against South Africa at the World T20 2014, Virat Kohli scored a match winning 72 of 44 balls and even he managed to get only 17 runs of the first 16 balls he faced.

Not just in T20 even in 50 overs game, many a times batsmen believe in creating a strong platform and then taking the charge. Ricky Ponting who played one of the best ODI innings at World Cup final in 2003 changed his gears only after scoring half century. He consumed 74 balls to reach 50 and then began the run feast by hitting Harbhajan for two sixes. His final score was 140 of 121 balls which means he scored 90 runs of remaining 47 balls.

However, there are still a lot who believe in smashing the ball from the word go. On many occasions such small but effective cameos change the course of the match. But even then every team wants a batter who could anchor the innings at the beginning and take charge at the end.

Well, Dominick’s knock today reminded that even in T20, batsmen still do have a lot of time to ‘construct’ an innings.

BPL Update – Bowling Partnerships

bpl-15by Chaitanya Halgekar

61 runs required from 60 balls and all the ten wickets in hand, AK United looked all set to complete a one sided victory over Super Express Vijaya. But in the 11th over Tahir Saraf sent Zahanuddin Shaikh back in the pavilion and things started changing. From overs 11 to 16 AK United scored 26 runs and lost 5 wickets courtesy to a splendid spin bowling spell from Tariff Saraff and Amey Bhatkande.

In any format of the game, partnerships are the key,” coaches repeat this line every time they talk about batting. But are partnerships limited only to batting? How many times have we seen a Cricket match being won due to an incredible bowling performance by two bowlers?

Any batsman would accept that batting becomes difficult if two bowlers bowl tidy lines from both the ends. If one bowler is bowling superbly then batsmen generally look to score runs from the other bowler. However, if both the bowlers ball exceptionally in tandem then there is no release for the batters.

This is exactly what happened to AK United. Their batsmen were completely tied down by some magnificent bowling by Tahir Saraf and Amey Bhatkande. This bowling partnership enabled Super Express Vijaya to register an impossible looking victory in Nitin Shirgurkar’s Belgaum Premier League.

Tahir Saraf had a match figures of 4-0-16-3 while Amey Bhatkande’s figures read 4-0-21-2. Both the bowlers admitted that they gained immense help from each other as the combined pressure resulted in more mistakes by the batsmen.

Today once again it was proved that in Cricket it is not just the batting partnerships that matter. Even in bowling you need partnerships from bowlers to win the game.

BPL Update- The need to take responsibility

bpl1

by Chaitanya Halgekar

Today while chasing 136 runs Sairaj Yuvraj Warriors managed to get 125 runs in their 20 overs. They lost the match to Anand’s Cricket Academy by 11 runs. Their highest scorer was Vishal Gorgonda. He scored 22 runs.

Yesterday they fell short by 17 runs while chasing 154 runs against Neena Sports Club. Prasad Nakadi was their highest scorer with 21 runs.

A defeat of 11 runs and 17 runs is very close in T20 format. Sairaj Yiuvraj Warriors must be highly disappointed with these results. Their captain Raju Patil, aptly repeatedly said, “We should have won both these games.”

By restricted the opposition to less than 160, their bowlers had done their job. However it is their batting that has let them down. As the scorecard suggests none of their batsmen could even get pass the score of 30.

For chasing any total, it is important to have a big score by at least one batsmen. This is exactly where things are going wrong for the Warriors. None of their batsman have taken the responsibility to play the big innings.

With important matches to come, Sairaj Yuvraj Warriors would be hoping that at least now their batsman click and find some rhythm.

Today’s Result-

  1. Super Express Vijaya Vs Potdar Vijaya Cricket Academy- Potdar Vijaya Cricket Academy won by 07 wickets. MOM- Amey Bhatkande.
  2. Anand’s C.A V/S Sairaj Yuvraj Warriors- Anand’s C.A won by 11 runs. MOM- Parappa Morade.
