Belgaum Premier League Diary

by Chaitanya Halgekar

The Nitin Shirgurkar’s Belgaum Premier League cricket tournament is currently going on at the Union Gymnkhana grounds.

Chaitanya Halgekar will report each days events in the BPL Diary here is the first one of January 1, 2015.

Reading the 22 yards

We will bowl first, “said Waseem Dhamanekar, captain of Super Express Vijaya, without any hesitation after winning the toss. The reason pretty simple and clear. The heavy rain of 20 minutes in the morning had done enough damage to the pitch and had made it ideal for the bowlers. The moisture on the pitch and dampness were encouraging signs for all bowlers. Any captain in the world would have done the same after winning the toss as the wet pitch causes heavy trouble to the batsmen.

However 15 minutes later when Waseem Dhamanekar led his team on the field the pitch had changed a lot. The sun, on part-time duties in the morning had finally come out and helped the pitch get dry. Three overs later, the sun was severe and it looked like nothing less than a ‘bright sunny day’. All the dampness had suddenly vanished and the bright sun turned the wicket into a batting beauty.

Eventually Super Express Vijaya lost the game by 82 runs to Belgaum Sports Club after conceding 159 runs in their 15 overs. Dhamanekar knew the wicket was not to be blamed for their defeat and it reflected in his post-match analysis.

Of the many lessons Dhamenekar learnt today at Union Gymkhana, ‘Do not take the pitch for granted’ was the most vital. It is always believed that reading a cricket pitch is not rocket science. Actually it is difficult than that. Not a single person on this planet will ever claim that he or she understood this strip of 22 yards completely.

May be that’s why Cricket is regarded as the game of glorious uncertainties. Because the 22 yards which actually decide the fate of 22 players always holds a certain degree of uncertainty and surprise in it.

Today’s results-

1st Match- BCC Macche Vs. AK United- AK United won by 4 wickets.
2nd Match- Super Express Vijaya Vs Belgaum Sports Club- Belgaum Sports Club won by 82 runs.

BPL update

By Chaitanya Halgekar

Ishfaq Nazir, captain of AK United is a very busy character on the field. He is generally seen on the ground making changes in the field, waving to his fielders, shouting out to get everything right and looking for every opportunity.
Today, the second over of Anand Cricket Academy’s innings was bowled by Nazir himself and as usual he was tremendously active in setting the field. For the first three deliveries he had a man at sweeper cover to protect the boundary. However, he brought that fielder inside the third yard circle just before the fifth ball. The batsmen played a lovely cover drive on the fifth ball and the fielder who was brought inside the circle stopped it with ease. Great thinking. A point scored for proactive captaincy.
Nazir then asked the fielder at third man boundary to come inside the circle for the sixth ball. On the next ball, the batsmen scored a boundary by hitting the ball in the vacant third man region. Poor field setting. A point lost for thinking too much.
One of the vital aspects of captaincy is field settings. And maybe that’s why captaincy is regarded as a crown with thorns. Great captains are generally associated with effective field settings and thoughtful decisions.
Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Imran Khan and Saurav Gangully are always considered as ‘aggressive’ captains because of their positive mind set and bold moves on the field. This is where the difference lies. The margin between ‘bold’ and ‘over-aggressive’ captaincy is very faint and a lot of times captains tend to cross the line without even knowing it.
It’s hard to tell whether Nazir today crossed that line or not. Because in Cricket it’s almost impossible to make a judgment. But one thing for sure. Nazir is a busy character on the field.

Today’s Result-
1. Potdar Vijaya Cricket Academy Vs Sairaj Youraj Warriors- Potdar Vijaya Cricket Academy won by 38 runs.
2. AK United Vs Anand’s Cricket Academy- Anand’s Cricket Academy won by 6 wickets.

From boy to man

With two set batsmen at the crease and 07 wickets in hand, BCC Macche were all set to dominate the death overs today at the Union Gymkhana against Belgaum Sports Club in the Nitin Shirgur’s Belgaum Premier League.

BCC Macche scored more than 10 runs in the 18th over and it looked impossible to stop the batsmen. In such a critical situation an average captain would as ask an experienced bowler to bowl the 19th over.

However, despite of having plenty of options available, BSC skipper Girish Nadkarni gave the ball to Swapnil Yelve, the left arm spinner. Yelve is still in his teenage years and does not even feature a full grown beard or mustache.

It was incredible to see the trust Nadkarni had in his young left-arm spinner. The young lad didn’t disappoint the captain and bowled fabulously. He restricted the batsmen using pace and length variation. The gamble worked and Yelve was applauded by everyone present at the stadium.

Those six balls offered Yelve a massive lesson and helped him to grow from a boy to a man. Maybe that’s cricketers grow up. May be that’s how captains grow up as well.

Nadkarni was asked about this gamble at the post-match ceremony. He replied by saying, “This has been the case with us so far. We have a lot of young talent and we will always give them the opportunity to perform.”

Eventually, BSC did manage to win that game but the biggest prize was secured by Yelve who showed temperament beyond measure and maturity of highest level.

Today’s Result-

1. Belgaum Sports Club Vs BCC Macche- 1. Belgaum Sports Club won by 04 wickets.

2. Union Gymkhana Vs Super Express Roadways Vijaya- 2. Union Gymkhana won by 20 runs.

BPL Update – The deciding factor

bpl-15by Chaitanya Halgekar

In the second match of the day, Anand’s Cricket Academy scored 167 runs. In reply Super Express Vijaya managed to get 159 runs. Anand Cricket Academy won the match by 08 runs.

After 10 overs, Anand’s Cricket Academy were 62 for 2. Super Express Vijaya scored 66 with 01 wicket down.

At 15 overs, Anand’s Cricket Academy’s score was 113 runs. Super Express Vijaya at this point had put 111 runs on the board.

The batting scores indicate that in this neck to neck contest, the battle was lost in the final five overs.

However, a glance at the bowling changes and analysis is more revealing.

By the 14th over, all the strike bowlers of Super Express Vijaya had completed their quota of 04 overs. The pivotal death overs were bowled by part-timers. Sumiran Chavan leaked 48 in his 03 overs.

On the contrary, Ketaj Kolhapure, the skipper of Anand’s Cricket Academy kept Parappa Morade, the experienced and lead bowler for the end along with Akshay Juvekar. Parappa Morade gave just 25 in his 03 overs at 8.33 runs per over. The required rate per over during that period was beyond 11 and half.

In Cricket, battles are not won only on the virtue of talent and skills. Many a times, tactics and decisions cost more than a dropped catch or a big over. Somewhere in this match ketaj kolhapure made a smart move which gave his team an edge against their opposition.

The difference between Parappa and Sumiran decided the result of the match.

Today’s Result-

  1. Belgaum Sports Club vs. A.K United- Belgaum Sports Club won by 69 runs.
  2. Super Express Vijaya vs. Anand’s Cricket Academy- Anand’s Cricket Academy won by 08 runs.
