BJP leader and MLC Mahantesh Kavatagimath on Monday said Belagavi district needs to be divided into three smaller districts for the ease of administration.

Just as Dharwad was divided into three districts in 1997, Belagavi district could be divided too. That would help the people very much as it would make the administration more effective.

People would not have to travel long distances to seek redressal of their grievances,” he said.

He told journalists that he and other leaders would convince Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa about the need to carve out two new districts from Belagavi, quotes the Hindu.

Discovery of 12th century ‘ArdhaSahasrakuta’ Jain sculpture and inscriptions in Belagavi

Brahmanand Srikant. Chipre ( IT Software Engineer &Archaeologist, Researcher by hobby ) had been to Belagavi fortress on a routine visit and found a Jain ancient sculpture in the premises of Kamal Basadi.

This is one of the oldest Jainasculpture found in NWKRTC Depot No. 2 in Belagavi on February 12, 2020. Being a researcher, I became interested in this sculpture.

If you look at the history of Belagavi – The Kuntala region’s, Kuhundi Mandala is a land of three hundred villages.
This region was ruled by Rattas. Savadatti (Saundatti), historically known as Sugandavarti was the capital of Ratta dynasty.

The kings of Ratta ruled the KuhundiMandala during 875-1250 CE period. Later Venugrama(today’s Belagavi) became the capital of Rattas. Rattas were patrons of Jainism. The Jain religion had been very rich and prosperous since then. To support this, there is evidence to prove that there were 108 Jain Basadis in the fort area of Belagavi.

Ever since, Jain heritage and culture has been found prospering in Belagavi region. There were three inscriptions found in the fort of Belgaum. Two inscriptions written in 1202 C.E by poet Kandarsha Balachandra & one inscription writtenin 1205 C.E by Parshwapandit.

The first two inscriptions are now in British Museum. This 12th century ancient Jainasculpture, which is now shifted to Kamal Basadi premises, isthe fourth unpublished inscription. Out of the previous 108 Basadis in Belagavi, the Kamal Basadi is in good shape and well maintained. Religious meetings and worship have been held here ever since.

The oldest Jaina sculpture found in Belagavi city on February 12, 2020 can be called as “ArdhaSahasrakuta“. The reasonbeing the 504 Jaina idols that have been carved on this single stone sculpture.

Concept of Sahasrakuta – The word ‘Sahasrakuta’ is a combination of two Kannada words ‘Sahasra’ meaning thousand and ‘kuta’ meaning combination.

An idol which has the carvings of 1008 Tirthankaras on a single stone is called as the Sahasrakuta since it is a sculpture with a combination of Jain idols. Having 504 idols carved on a single stone can be called as ArdhaSahasrakuta.

The Jain idols in this ArdhaSahasrakuta are unique specimen insofar as depicting Jinas in Kayotsarga/Khadgasana (standing position), whereas in other Jain sahasrakutas structures, we find them seated in Padmasana (cross-legged yoga seated posture) and this being the only one of its kinds as compared to others in Karnataka and India. This will add to the rich trove of Jain relics in the state, which is already home to as many as six live models of the sahasrakuta. Of the six sahasrakutas in the state, the one at Shanka Basadi in Lakshmeshwara in Gadag was the earliest to be found.

The others are in Ainapur in Belagavi, Arasikere in Hassan, Moodubidri in Dakshina Kannada, Shravanabelagolain Hassan and Kallahangarga in Kalaburagi. The recently discovered structure turning out to be a ardhasahasrakuta, there is the possibility of having existed a Jain Basadi nearby.

While I was cleaning this sculpture on February 22, 2020, I found 9 lines of jaina inscriptions. After cleaning and getting a clean, clear and readable format of these inscriptions, I had a discussion with my friend Dr. Ravikumar Navalgunda and the details in the inscriptions are as follows:

“Kambadevana, the son of Brahmadeva of Hoovinabaga, a disciple of Megachandra Triviyadeva of Kundakundanvaya, made a statue with 500 Jain idols as atonement to his sins. He donated this ArdhaSahasrakuta statue to a Basadi in Venugrama. Anyone worshiping the magnificent statue will be in eternal bliss.”

When we measure this sculpture, the measurements are as follows:

Statue’s running height – 4.1 feet
The foot circumference of the statue – 9.08 feet
The circumference of the statue tower – 5.0 ft.

This sculpture is 4 sided with a total of 504 Jain Idols. The sculpture is divided into eight (8) stairs. Each staircase has an average size of 4 inches. On one side of these staircases are carved the Jaina Idols. Between each of the two stairs, there is an inscription script. A total of 9 inscriptions can be found here.

Brahmanand Chipre has been assisted in the task by Dr.Bahubali Handur and Sunil Padmannavar.

The BJP is gearing up to field its candidates in the next Corporation elections on its symbol. Many would say so what’s the news here?

The Belagavi city corporation elections have never been fought on party lines. In all the past elections, candidates filed nomination papers as independent candidates and after elections, formed groups based on their language affiliations like Marathi Group, Kannada Group, and Urdu Group.

If the BJP goes ahead as planned then there will be a significant change in the politics of the Corporation altogether.

Each time the Pro Marathi or Pro Kannada groups have celebrated the election of the Mayor and Dy Mayor from their group.

None of the parties have ever tried to field any candidates on their official symbols nor the Congress nor BJP nor JDS.
All file their nominations as independents only.

Many times new groups of a few Marathi, Kannada, Urdu Councilors were also made from which eventually a Mayor was elected.

ccb-boardAlmost all other elections are it Gram Panchayat, Taluka Panchayat all have been fought on the parties symbol.

Currently, the elections of the Corporation are on hold due to cases filed in the High court over Delimitation and reservation.

All sweet shops will soon be required to declare the manufacturing and best-before dates of all sweets, India’s food safety regulator has ruled.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in its latest notification, has directed Sweetshops to display the manufacturing and the best-before dates for loose sweets, effective June 1.

At present, it is mandatory to mention these details on labels of prepackaged/pre-packed sweets.

sweet-shop display

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a direction in this regard after reports of instances of sale of stale/expired sweets to consumers posing potential health hazards.

In the public interest and to ensure food safety, it has been decided that in case of non-packaged/loose sweets, the container/tray holding sweets at the outlet for sale should display the ‘date of manufacturing’ and ‘best before date’ of the product,” the FSSAI order stated.

An outlet, on average, has as many as 200 varieties of sweets to sell, which are made from different kinds of ingredients and therefore have different duration of shelf life.
Hence from June 1, when you buy your favorite Kunda or be it, the Kaju Katli don’t forget to see the date of manufacturing and ‘best before date’ of the product.

HEALTH CHECK-UP KIOSKS LAUNCHED AT FIVE MORE RAILWAY STATIONS OVER HUBBALLI DIVISION

In order to promote new ideas for improving the passenger experience at stations, provide useful amenities to passengers, Hubballi Division in SWR has allotted space for Health Checkup Kiosks at Dharwad, Belagavi, Vasco da Gama, Ballari & Hosapete Railway Stations recently for the benefit of passengers. These kiosks have been set up at these railway stations which will benefit the passengers and also generate Non-Fare Revenue to the Railways.

Earlier, in the month of January, one kiosk was installed at Hubballi Railway Station and is receiving a good response from the public.

The Health Check Up Kiosk named Pulse Active Station consisting of a network of Internet of Things (IOT) based smart kiosk will generate a report with 21 body parameters and risk indicators for lifestyle diseases.

The body parameters include physical dimensions such as Height, Weight, BMI as well as cardiac health parameters including Blood Pressure, SPO2 and Pulse Rate with Body Composition Analysis for Body Fat percentage, Mineral Content, Muscle and Bone Strength and Body Water content.

The lifestyle disease indicators include Diabetes, Osteoarthritis, Cardiac issues and similar issues. Basic tests for one’s wellness along with health parameters can be done by this Kiosk starting from Rs.50 to Rs.100/- depending on the kind of test chosen by them.

Shri A.K. Singh, General Manager /SWR said that in the busy life, finding time for health check-up is difficult and many times, the same is being postponed/not done frequently by the public. Now with these health check-up Kiosks, passengers at the stations can undergo these checks in the waiting time at stations and get basic health reports. If any deviation noticed in their health parameters from the prescribed/normal range, they can consult doctors for further course of action.

MSME Department officers visited Belagavi on 02.01.2020 to identify the Land for the technology centre which is going to establish by Central Government at Belagavi.

After convincing the officials President Shri Rohan Juvali, Belagavi Small Scale Industries Association took the delegation to see the land at Peeranwadi gram panchayat were he explained the officers that BDSSIA has identified the barren land (The land which is not used for agriculture) of 100 acres here to develop industrial layout for small and Medium Enterprises and out of this 100 acres President requested the joint director of DIC government of Karnataka to acquire 20 acres of land directly from the landowners and hand it over the land to Central government for the development of Technology Centers.

Speaking to AAB Rohan Juvali said since the project has been sanctioned by MSME department on conditional basis, that state government has to allott the 20 acres land at Piranwadi to Central government at free of cost and the farmers of this land are ready to give land at the rate of 20 lakhs per acre to state government.
But the DIC is not responding favorably and he is misguiding the media that farmers are asking more price for this land so the land acquisition may take six months.
Juvali also fears that if something is not done on an urgent basis this project may also go to Hubballi or some other place.

tech-centreIf this project comes to Belagavi then it will attract large Scale Industries to invest in Belagavi. I think this is high time to come together and fight for this project.

The proposed technology center will have the facilities like skill development Center, residential industrial training school/college for minimum 1000 students, Incubation Center, tool room, advanced manufacturing facilities for subcontracting the jobs of all industrial units and to support the MSME’s in and around Belagavi District which is going to also help the Engineering Students & startup’s. The central government has planned to invest all these facilities with an approximate investment of 200 to 300 crores (Two hundred to Three hundred crores).

It’s OK To Fail

by Dr.Madhav Prabhu

Life is such a precious gift, from the moment you open your eyes to this world, from the very first breath there is so much to feel, so much to experience. Someone rightly said life is the most awesome festival you can celebrate. Yet there can be times when life becomes a burden, the reason to live becomes so non-existent.

Lives which could shape the future of our country, someone’s son, brother or sister to another, yet these relations could not bind them to fight it out.

It was with this background that I was asked to give a small talk on positive thinking and handling failure in one of the professional colleges in the city. As a doctor we are used to counseling patients, giving them hope, trying to make them cope with illness, but this was different. I had to do a lot of research for this one as here these were not regular patients whose disease is manifest, but here we were to jump into a house with occult depression and suicidal tendencies.

ok-2-fail

Well, it was at this time that I tried to figure out if I ever felt so in my own life because unless I felt it I could not connect with the kids. I knew exactly when I felt this and it’s not a one-off experience, most medical students go through this at the time of getting their post-graduate seats, the wait, the constant hammering of your relatives and friends, the pressure to earn, the frustration of being a degree holder but in unemployed, the fact that you lose your own self-esteem, well it’s a horrible feeling especially for those who are alien to failure.

Problem starts at home, we try to see our kids as subjects to satisfy our unfulfilled dreams. At first the kids enjoy it like every new toy given to it, we want out kids to learn music, to dance, to skate to draw and yet score a perfect ten on ten in every exam.

We instill in them, ambitions which are not backed by passions. The pressure to score is so high that parents tend to forget that the children are reading and writing but not knowing. We deprive our kids of ideational reasoning and make then mainframes of computers itself. The idea that the child has to succeed becomes the one line agenda that the society and the parents expect, and failure is not acceptable.

Ninety percent and above is the only achievement, so much is the pressure to perform that the delicate beautiful mind shuts off all its facilities on this one point program, this is in my view the point of the first contact with depression. The child simply forgets to live and turns into a mark scoring machine, so much so that the entire learning process becomes exam oriented. Can you imagine a doctor who reads to pass an exam or an engineer who reads complex processes to clear a semester, well don’t imagine you will soon find them?

We fail to sit down with our children and ask them what they want to do with their lives and push then towards what we think is right for them, how rational is that.

Sooner or later the last straw is broken and failure steps in, the problem is that the child and the parents can’t handle failure because they are never exposed to it. One failure and you ostracize the child so much that the child begins to feel this is the end of life. Here starts the vicious cycle of self-destruction, negative thoughts leading to negative actions, loss of morale and break down of self-esteem.

It’s actually here that the early signs of depression can be caught, the child starts to stay in isolation, annoyed by the company of anyone and everyone, excessive anger and fault finding, lack of concentration, lack of interest in almost anything and not to mention the loss of good health.

Soon the child gets into a Chakravyuha of negative thoughts reinforced by annoying social interaction and soon falls prey to abuse of drugs which temporarily disconnect the mind from the reality. The child falls deeper and deeper into this till the mind breaks down completely and this is the point where ending one’s own life becomes the only alternative.

Well all this is known to most and so it was to me, I also searched the literature for successful people who were failures, to begin with, and to my surprise, I found that most of our role models and almost all of the best mind’s in the world were once big times failures.

Honda, Microsoft, Apple, Ford were all built by people who failed miserably in their many first attempts.Einstein, Edison were not taken in schools and were considered imbecile yet they turned out to be the most fabulous minds in the world.

Coming to think of it, you will not know the value of success if you don’t fail. I can’t imagine the world if all these great men would have given up their lives on failure.

Well with all this study the lecture at the college went well, everyone was happy that the lecture is done with and we could go home, but then as doctors we try to take home much more and so we started interacting with students even gave them our numbers just in case, actually speaking I never thought these elite professional college students would need any help. This turned out to be an illusion and it was shocking as to how much these little minds were holding to themselves.

There were students who hated the subjects and had to give up something in which they had tremendous talent, there were students who were doing the course just to make their parents happy, there was no interest in the subject nor was there a will to excel, unbelievably there was a huge chunk of students who were going through the cycles of depression and this was a rude awakening to me.

Some of the kids showed me their past artwork and really what creativity they had, I was so taken aback that this talent was sacrificed for the degree. Don’t you think we need good artists too instead of uninterested doctors and engineers?

I think it’s time to introspect real hard now, we can’t afford the loss of any more lives. We need to act now or we will never end these cycles of depression. One good way to start is to communicate, talk with your kids, let the kids talk with their friends, mobiles, tv’s, social media can wait.

The family and friends are the best cushions one can have. If you are in constant touch with your kids you will notice the subtle signs of depression, that’s the time we need to give more to our children, some good company and some nice words can make a world of difference.

Sit for one meal a day together as a family and just talk about your day and that will support every member of the family. Know what’s on the child’s mind, be a friend, don’t let a blue whale be your child’s best friend. Suicide is an impulse and a little support at that fateful moment can save a life.

Society and social values change over time, a girl playing cricket would be a taboo ten years back but today the Indian women’s cricket team is the toast of the country. The society needs to stop being myopic, there can be a different view and it’s ok to express it, there can be alternative careers and it’s ok to pursue that should be the mood of the society. We need to stop being patronizing and criticizing uncles and aunties and be more inclusive in the happiness of our young. We may no longer have joint families but we can definitely have common concerns.

The jadu ki jhappi is actually not a bad idea, it does work and I can vouch for it. If you find a friend going through a tough time, it’s time to give him a hug and tell him it’s ok, your failure means you are on way to succeed. There is a help too, there are professional counselors to help get rid of all the negativity.

Dear parents please do everything to support your child but make sure you also tell your loved ones that it’s ok to fail.
