It’s OK To Fail

by Dr.Madhav Prabhu

Life is such a precious gift, from the moment you open your eyes to this world, from the very first breath there is so much to feel, so much to experience. Someone rightly said life is the most awesome festival you can celebrate. Yet there can be times when life becomes a burden, the reason to live becomes so non-existent.

Lives which could shape the future of our country, someone’s son, brother or sister to another, yet these relations could not bind them to fight it out.

It was with this background that I was asked to give a small talk on positive thinking and handling failure in one of the professional colleges in the city. As a doctor we are used to counseling patients, giving them hope, trying to make them cope with illness, but this was different. I had to do a lot of research for this one as here these were not regular patients whose disease is manifest, but here we were to jump into a house with occult depression and suicidal tendencies.

ok-2-fail

Well, it was at this time that I tried to figure out if I ever felt so in my own life because unless I felt it I could not connect with the kids. I knew exactly when I felt this and it’s not a one-off experience, most medical students go through this at the time of getting their post-graduate seats, the wait, the constant hammering of your relatives and friends, the pressure to earn, the frustration of being a degree holder but in unemployed, the fact that you lose your own self-esteem, well it’s a horrible feeling especially for those who are alien to failure.

Problem starts at home, we try to see our kids as subjects to satisfy our unfulfilled dreams. At first the kids enjoy it like every new toy given to it, we want out kids to learn music, to dance, to skate to draw and yet score a perfect ten on ten in every exam.

We instill in them, ambitions which are not backed by passions. The pressure to score is so high that parents tend to forget that the children are reading and writing but not knowing. We deprive our kids of ideational reasoning and make then mainframes of computers itself. The idea that the child has to succeed becomes the one line agenda that the society and the parents expect, and failure is not acceptable.

Ninety percent and above is the only achievement, so much is the pressure to perform that the delicate beautiful mind shuts off all its facilities on this one point program, this is in my view the point of the first contact with depression. The child simply forgets to live and turns into a mark scoring machine, so much so that the entire learning process becomes exam oriented. Can you imagine a doctor who reads to pass an exam or an engineer who reads complex processes to clear a semester, well don’t imagine you will soon find them?

We fail to sit down with our children and ask them what they want to do with their lives and push then towards what we think is right for them, how rational is that.

Sooner or later the last straw is broken and failure steps in, the problem is that the child and the parents can’t handle failure because they are never exposed to it. One failure and you ostracize the child so much that the child begins to feel this is the end of life. Here starts the vicious cycle of self-destruction, negative thoughts leading to negative actions, loss of morale and break down of self-esteem.

It’s actually here that the early signs of depression can be caught, the child starts to stay in isolation, annoyed by the company of anyone and everyone, excessive anger and fault finding, lack of concentration, lack of interest in almost anything and not to mention the loss of good health.

Soon the child gets into a Chakravyuha of negative thoughts reinforced by annoying social interaction and soon falls prey to abuse of drugs which temporarily disconnect the mind from the reality. The child falls deeper and deeper into this till the mind breaks down completely and this is the point where ending one’s own life becomes the only alternative.

Well all this is known to most and so it was to me, I also searched the literature for successful people who were failures, to begin with, and to my surprise, I found that most of our role models and almost all of the best mind’s in the world were once big times failures.

Honda, Microsoft, Apple, Ford were all built by people who failed miserably in their many first attempts.Einstein, Edison were not taken in schools and were considered imbecile yet they turned out to be the most fabulous minds in the world.

Coming to think of it, you will not know the value of success if you don’t fail. I can’t imagine the world if all these great men would have given up their lives on failure.

Well with all this study the lecture at the college went well, everyone was happy that the lecture is done with and we could go home, but then as doctors we try to take home much more and so we started interacting with students even gave them our numbers just in case, actually speaking I never thought these elite professional college students would need any help. This turned out to be an illusion and it was shocking as to how much these little minds were holding to themselves.

There were students who hated the subjects and had to give up something in which they had tremendous talent, there were students who were doing the course just to make their parents happy, there was no interest in the subject nor was there a will to excel, unbelievably there was a huge chunk of students who were going through the cycles of depression and this was a rude awakening to me.

Some of the kids showed me their past artwork and really what creativity they had, I was so taken aback that this talent was sacrificed for the degree. Don’t you think we need good artists too instead of uninterested doctors and engineers?

I think it’s time to introspect real hard now, we can’t afford the loss of any more lives. We need to act now or we will never end these cycles of depression. One good way to start is to communicate, talk with your kids, let the kids talk with their friends, mobiles, tv’s, social media can wait.

The family and friends are the best cushions one can have. If you are in constant touch with your kids you will notice the subtle signs of depression, that’s the time we need to give more to our children, some good company and some nice words can make a world of difference.

Sit for one meal a day together as a family and just talk about your day and that will support every member of the family. Know what’s on the child’s mind, be a friend, don’t let a blue whale be your child’s best friend. Suicide is an impulse and a little support at that fateful moment can save a life.

Society and social values change over time, a girl playing cricket would be a taboo ten years back but today the Indian women’s cricket team is the toast of the country. The society needs to stop being myopic, there can be a different view and it’s ok to express it, there can be alternative careers and it’s ok to pursue that should be the mood of the society. We need to stop being patronizing and criticizing uncles and aunties and be more inclusive in the happiness of our young. We may no longer have joint families but we can definitely have common concerns.

The jadu ki jhappi is actually not a bad idea, it does work and I can vouch for it. If you find a friend going through a tough time, it’s time to give him a hug and tell him it’s ok, your failure means you are on way to succeed. There is a help too, there are professional counselors to help get rid of all the negativity.

Dear parents please do everything to support your child but make sure you also tell your loved ones that it’s ok to fail.

No relationship is all sunshine, but two people can share one umbrella and survive the storm together. This is the motive of a couple who married at Mahesh Foundation in a simple way called “Mantra Mangalya”, a concept by Rashtrakavi Kuvempu.

Mr. Chandrakant Gavani and Veena, tied the nuptial knot in the presence of some senior social activists and children of Mahesh Foundation. The couple desired to marry in the presence of underprivileged children and instead of spending on luxurious marriage they wanted to contribute that for children. The simple marriages are rare these days so, this couple became a role model for society.

Children participated in the marriage with enthusiasm because they don’t attend such functions. Hence they involved in the event as this is one of their family members. The people who gathered at the wedding were happy with the arrangements made at Mahesh Foundation and also involved in the marriage ceremony.

There are some special guests were present such as Rajyotsava awardees Shivaji Kagnikar, Mr. Prakash Bhat, Author Sarajoo Katkar among others.

Chandrakant Gavani & Veena Marriage Chandrakant Gavani & Veena Marriage Mr. Chandrakant Gavani is a supporter of the Mahesh Foundation who thought of this new concept and married Veena at Mahesh Foundation. They desired to make their dream event in the presence of children and also thought of instead spending money on unnecessary things they wanted to contribute to the children of Mahesh Foundation. It looks simple but conveyed a message to society that marriage is between two souls and not in any luxurious things. All the arrangements of the wedding made by Mahesh Foundation like their one of the family members with excitement.

This wedding has also “made a difference” because the children who usually don’t attend such functions have witnessed the wedding and they were also excited about the wedding. They had been considered as special guests and also some chief guests had been invited to the wedding who have their remarks in the society.

Differently gifted children swimming a new life

$

No longer are the children with disabilities left on the hillside to perish like the days of Sparta, nor do they spend their lives in beds, hospitals. A great deal has changed not only in rehabilitation science but also in the social climate has improved. New frontiers in realizing optimal health, wellness, and fitness are being accomplished through research, public policy, advocacy, technological advances, and training and program development.

There have been changes in attitude, system, facilities, educational programs, and school curriculum for Divyang jan. The Governments and Non-Government Organisations world over are making endless efforts in this direction.

The so-called “disabled people” are considered “differently-abled persons” or also as “differently gifted”. In fact, it is the society, which handicaps them by depriving them form the opportunities that they require to lead their lives actively. They do not want any pity but need encouragement in their efforts to overcome the handicaps. The society should see what these people are left with and not what they have lost.

To Bring these persons into the mainstream life requires offering them all possible opportunities, especially physical therapy, to improve their motor capacities. In this regard exercising inside water permits them, irrespective of the handicap, to move quite freely without calipers, sticks, crutches, or wheelchairs. Such an independent exercise program through unhurting active routines in water is called Aquatherapy.

It leads to immeasurable benefits and aims for ABILITY IN WATER as opposed to DISABILITY ON LAND. Aqua therapy emphasizes the prevention and treatment of neuromuscular complications. It is also useful for those with back problems, joint reconstructions, arthritis, stress-related injuries, and sports injuries.

Blind by birth he is learning swimming

The coaching camp is being conducted at Rotary Corporation Sports Academy’s Swimming Pool, Shri Basveshwar Circle, Belagavi in the month of February.

Over 200 Children comprising of Physically Challenged, The Blind, Mentally Challenged, hearing challeneged and economically backward children have participated. The children are provided with Free Transportation, Free Swimming Kit, and Staple Diet apart from Swimming Training.

Many of the children who came here now are international Gold medalists. Many have participated on the national level.

Success stories such as Moin Junedi, Raghvendra Anvekar, Rajesh Shinde, Swati Goundalkar and many more have made their parents proud.

Blind girl jumping of the platform

Once you see these children you think these are really special children but they cannot walk or talk or see as normal ones. But seeing the enthusiasm at the poolside was amazing. Imagine watching a 12-year-old completely blind girl by birth jumping from a 10 feet platform with confidence, is amazing.

Furat & Zeba who hail from Kudachi, Raibag who are suffering from a rare disease and they need very special treatment due to their illness are now getting trained to swim and over come their physical disabilities.

Swayam Bandivadekar aged 5, who is mentally retarded has come here for training as the doctors said medicines won’t cure him, so you should try out Aqua therapy.

There are many success stories here, take Atesh Jadhav, who could not stand straight, after training here for three years he can now stand straight, see you straight in the eye and now he will be going to the aborad to participate in the swimming championship.

Sharad Kumbhar aged 8 years who is from Haveri is here with his parents to get trained and his parents told that they heard about this camp in a news channel and they have put themselves up here at a hotel so that they can get their son treated.

Moin Mustaque Junned, a native of Kudachi in Raibag taluk who has now settled in Belgaum, has been suffering from a rare disease of zero-bone calcium. Due to the delicate nature of his bones, he has hundreds of fractures all over his body. Moin neither could stand on his feet nor eat without someone’s help. Even a slight blow can result in another fracture. The doctors have suggested the family take the utmost care. He won gold medals in 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke. He has been trained here.

Zeba & Furat being trained

The children are not only trained by the experts but the elder children who have been trained here earlier take an active part in training the new children.

After the one hour of training, all the children n are given snacks after which they proceed back to their places of stay.

It is staunchly believed that pilgrimage to Jyotirlingas, numbering 12 and scattered across India, won’t be complete without worshipping the presiding deity of this shrine. As in Kashi, the devotees are allowed close access to Shiva which gives devotees much spiritual bliss. Legend has it that the linga here was venerated by Kapila Muni and hence the name Kapileshwar. It is said that the saint worshipped Shiva by starting a fire and pouring oblations dear to Him as aahudhi

Adi Sankara had visited the shrine in the 8th century. Swami Vivekananda, the champion of Hindu cause, culture, and philosophy, had a darshan of the lord during his brief spiritual sojourn in Belgaum. Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi had prostrated before this lord of the world (Viswanath) in 1924. Revolutionary freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak had also visited the shrine.

Mural paintings, depicting themes from Bhagavatam, Gajendra Moksham and Linga Purana adorn the four walls. Emancipation of Ahalya, cursed to become a stone, by the magic touch of Lord Ram’s lotus feet—a scene from the Ramayana—is depicted in sparkling colors.

Corporation wants NOC from Cantonment to get Building permission

BUDA and the City Corporation are not sanctioning building plans on private freehold land in close proximity (50 metres or 165 feet) to Cantonment or military land boundaries until an. N.O.C. is obtained from various military authorities.
Dr. Nitin Khot says it is necessary to clarify the picture and establish the correct legal procedure.
It appears to me both BUDA and the City Corporation authorities might be acting on letters dashed off to them by military officers in Belagavi like the letter from Col. Dalawai-

But it seems they are unaware of, or oblivious to two legal points:

1) The Works of Defence Act 1903, which Col. Dalawai refers to, has a well set, clearly specified procedure to be applied to any area that has been approved by Parliament and declared to be an area around a particular sensitive Defence establishment that needs to be kept free of construction.

Such a declaration has to be signed by the Secretary to the Government and public notice thereof has to be given by the Deputy Commissioner of the Distric1 who has to give public notice of the declaration and of the specific area which has to be mapped. The DC has then to determine and award compensation to the affected persons.

No part of this procedure has been applied to any part of Belagavi —‘not’ now, nor since 1903.

It is well established that any Order by an officer must be supported by law — or it shall be regarded as arbitrary and, as such, it needs to be ignored.

2) The officer who wrote the letter to BUDA— and to the City Corporation and other civilian officials seemed unaware of, or oblivious to, the Order of the Ministry of Defence, sent to all Chiefs of Staff on 21 October 2016 and to the Director Defence Estates on 25/10/2016 (during the late Shri Manohar Parrikar’s tenure as Defence Minister).
According to this Order, there are 193 places in India where a NOC is required for civilian construction within 10 meters of a Defence installation/ establishment.

There are 149 stations (mostly in Kashmir), where restrictions on constructions extend to 50 metres or even 100 metres.

You will find that Belgaum/Belagavi is nowhere on the list of places where there are restrictions. This means that in Belagavi there are no restrictions on construction near a defense boundary.

The Ministry of Defence has never applied the Works of Defence act to any part of Belagavi – nor has included any part of Belagavi in any list of ‘restricted’ places.

(The reason for this is also very easy to understand – Shri Manohar Parrikar used to visit Belagavi at least twice a month when he was a businessman in Goa and knew very well the Belagavi has only three ‘light infantry’ training schools here).

Therefore, if the military officers here are writing such letters, as the one at Annexure 2 on behalf of the Station Commandant, then these letters deserve to be ignored as they are misrepresenting the law, since

(a) the letter has been issued invoking the Works of Defence Act, 1903,— which the Lok Sabha has never allowed to be applied to any part of Belagavi, and

(b) the Ministry of Defence itself has 365 days before the letter issued clear Orders to all branches of the Defence Department to exempt Belagavi from any restrictions.

It is therefore unfair to those “inspirational Indians” who aspire to build their own dwelling unit, with their own hard-earned funds on their own freehold land, to be asked by civilian authorities, who anyway are only bound by the Acts of the State of Karnataka, and not by the letters of any Army officer — to be asked to go and obtain an NOC, from some Army Authority — somewhere in the country (Pune, Bengaluru or New Delhi) who is not even empowered by law to issue such NOC.

This point may be carefully studied so that hapless civilians are not put to needless distress.

Kannada organizations have opposed the mega project worth ₹1300 crores which is awaiting for cabinet approval – 24/7 drinking water supply for entire Dharwad district from Naveeluteerth reservoir. If this is approved then Belagavi and Bagalkot districts have to suffer in coming days.

This place is known as Naviluthertha because a large number of peafowls are found in this area. Even today, we can hear the melodious calls and cries of peafowl here. This dam is the shortest dam in Karnataka — 155 m in height and 41 m in length, with four gates. It irrigates more than 2,000 sq km of agricultural land. It also supplies drinking water to Belagavi, Hubli-Dharwad, Gadag and Bagalkot.

The reservoir which was built in 1974 also serves Ramdurg, Savadatti, Badami, Naragund, Navalagund talukas for drinking water purposes. Later water from here was supplied to Hubballi -Dharwad city and few areas in Gadag district too.

80 MLD water used to be supplied to Hubballi City. But recently a water purification plant has been inaugurated on Feb 08, 2020 in Amminabhavi near Savadatti, from where 40 MLD extra water is being supplied from the same reservoir. Along with all these even for Dharwad city gets 73 MLD.

The Kannada Organizations will cause interruption of water supply to Belagavi where the water originated.

Naveeluteerth reservoirWith all this, another project is waiting to get approval from state govt for Dharwad district. This mega project of Drinking water supply to Dharwad district worth 1300 crores is waiting for GOK approval.

This includes 399 villages of Dharwad to get a 24/7 water supply scheme which is waiting for cabinet approval. If sanctioned then whole Naveeluteerth reservoir water will be supplied to Dharwad alone.

And coming to Mahadaayi, if maximum water is to be supplied to Dharwad district then how “Original Claimant” – Belagavi get benefited?

Will Mandoli road make it to Book of records for the longest time taken?

In July 2017 the first major tender under the Smart city project was floated and that was Mandoli Road(First gate towards Mandoli part of MG Road included) and KPTCL road at Nehru Nagar will be developed as Smart roads under the Smart City project at a cost of Rs. 20,38,78,736.38 in about 12 months’ time from the date of the work order.

Work on the same commenced after the rains somewhere around August-September 2017 and the residents were dreaming of a new posh road with footpath, Cycle track on both sides along with dedicated space for UGD/OFC/ Power lines and utilities and the carriageway in the center.

But to their dismay, now after 30 months the Mandoli Road is not yet complete and riding on that road is the road to hell. In-fact already the road has claimed one life of Daulat Davale who slipped and fell on the open iron bars out for the gutter in November 2019.

Later on, December 1, 2019, MLA Abhay Patil convened a meeting of the officials, contractors and assured the residents that the road would be completed in 3 months’ time. He had said major causes for delay of Mandoli road were discussed with more than 150 residents residing nearby Mandoli road, residents too shared their thoughts. Smart City MD, their staff and Contractor were present. The residents urged to complete the road within 3months and the contractor has agreed to the demand of people and the works will be undertaken accordingly, a review meeting will be done every 15 days to monitor the process and road construction is expected to finish in 3 months.

The contract was awarded to NARENDRA CHUNILAL PANANI ( PRIME CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURES PVT. LTD. )Company Name: PRIME CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURES PVT. LTD. For Rs. 233173528.6.

Still what is the main issue with the delay is not yet clear. Work is progressing but slower than a snail, residents say.

Dust is now an integral part of their lives and many have been affected with the same and are facing health issues.

Still, it is very unclear as to how much more time is required for the road to be completed.

So, Will Mandoli road make it to Book of records for the longest time taken?
