All Shops adjacent to the Kalamandir (which has already been demolished) have been given a deadline for removal of goods by tomorrow 10 AM.

The vegetable market shed and a few shops in that particular area adjacent to the earlier Kalamandir have been demolished today.

This entire space will make way for the new Shopping complex under Smart city.
Most of the shops here were given to the shop owners who had lost their property during the road widening of Congress road in 1993.

kalamandir-shopsThe business owners could not stop their tears as the demolition took away their place of business and destroyed their goods and infrastructure inside the shop.

Many requested time till tomorrow so that the belongings could be removed but the officials did not heed to the request.

Work on Underpass near CBT could begin anytime

In a review meeting held at the Belagavi smart city office recently, it was decided that the work on the underpass connecting the Central bus stand with the City bus stand would be commenced soon.

Sashidhar Kurer opined that as the road works near CBT have been completed the police should give permission to start the work of the underpass.

The police have given their nod for the same, saying one side of the road near CBT could be closed and the work on the underpass could be commenced.

Now once this work starts there is a high chance of huge traffic snarls at this junction.

Shops near Sai Mandir to be auctioned

For over 9 years these shops built by the Belagavi city corporation are officially lying vacant and now the Corporation plans to auction them.

This structure has been kept unutilized since it was constructed in 2012-13. Out of the 48 shops 35 have already been allotted but they haven’t been giving the papers of the same, so the persons can’t come in starting their business.

The corporation never completed the formalities then and the shops have been kept unutilized since then.

When they were built it was said that all the shop owners who lost their shops during the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana would be accommodated here. All false and fake promises they seemed.
The Vegetable market next to Kalamandir which has already been demolished were demolished on Wednesday and the remaining few will come under the hammer today.

Most of the shops here were of the persons who lost their shops in the 1993 Congress road widening. They were accommodated here by then-Mayor Late Sambhaji Patil.

But shrewdly the Corporation never registered the shops in the names of the affected and today all have been demolished and the persons who made their livelihood from here are now on the roads again.

They were removed from Congress road and then resettled here and now again they have been removed and this time they may not be rehabilitated again. For over 27 years the shop owners have been fighting for their rights but no one has heard them, and now with the demolition of those shops which earned them their bread they have a hard life ahead.

The shops near Sai Mandir will be auctioned and hence the shop owners whose shops have been now demolished will have to take part in the auction and get themselves a space for business.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa presented the state budget for 2020-21. Here are the key takeaways for Belagavi –

An arrangement will be made in Belagavi and Kalaburagi Divisions through State Road Transport Corporations to provide Vehicle Driving Training to unemployed youth (male/female) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

By constructing Dharwad-Belagavi railway line through Kittur, the distance between Dharwad and Belagavi will be reduced from 121 km to 73 km and this will lead to a reduction in the travelling time of at least one hour. Therefore, the State Government has consented to the Ministry of Railways to provide land free of cost to this railway line and to bear fifty percent of cost of the works.

cm-bsyUnder Public Private Partnership (PPP), Centers of Excellence will be established in Government Tool Room and Training Centre located at Belagavi, Hubbali, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Hassan, Tumakuru and Harihara with an expenditure of Rs.353 crore. Through this, the employment opportunities will be increased by providing skill development training to the youth of the State in the high level domains of industrial sectors. It is targeted to provide appointments to 12600 students in the next five years.

The Suvarna Soudha at Belagavi remains vacant except for the period during the session. For the better utilization of this building, it has been decided to shift some of the State Government offices to Suvarna Soudha in stages.

Home(town) is where the heart is: Miraj Maaher Mandal

There is a long list of sacrifices that a woman makes, but the biggest sacrifice she makes is leaving her parent’s house after marriage. The house where she grew up, the streets where she wandered, the childhood friends with whom she played around, her favorite food joints, her gang of college besties and their hang-up adda, the celebrations during festivals and gossip nights with cousins. One fine day she gets married and has to leave all this behind within a short time.

Home(town) is where the heart is and people call it ‘Maaher’ in Marathi or Tavar Mane in Kannada and whenever you utter these words in front of any woman, her heart certainly strikes a chord.

Many women from Belagavi settled elsewhere and many from other cities settled here after marriage. This exchange of daughters happens everywhere and is a part of the ritual accepted worldwide. However, a group of ladies from Miraj who have settled in Belagavi decided to stay connected to their roots and formed a group by the name Miraj Maaher Mandal.

Miraj Maaher was started in 1990 by Vijaya Dixit and Asha Gothe. With a few members in the early stage, today the group has 70 members and growing.

Miraj-Maaher-Mandal belgaumLadies from an age group of 20 to 80 years are a part of this group, all hailing from Miraj and presently staying in Belagavi. The group organizes various events throughout the year to stay connected to the memories of their hometown (Maaher) in some way.

The members meet every month for a get-together and discussions. Unsung ladies are felicitated for their achievements, talk programs are arranged about different topics, festivals are celebrated, programs like haldi kumkum are organized, senior members are felicitated and also birthdays of members are celebrated.

The group also organizes an outdoor trip every year somewhere nearby Belagavi. Women entrepreneurs or activists of the city are also called to give guest talks.

All these activities are carried out to stay in touch with each other and to always stay connected to their beloved hometown and the memories associated with it. Meeting friends or even unknowns from your own city is a pleasure in itself.

Not just women, but men too who have left their home for jobs or education know this feeling. Hope Belgaumites who have settled elsewhere get inspired by the same and create similar groups in their respective cities to stay connected to their roots.

Oliver Wendell Holmes had rightly said, “Hometown is something that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.”

This was an attempt to spread awareness about sustainable alternatives like reusable sanitary pads, biodegradable pads, menstrual cups.

The Health Department in Karnataka has asked the citizens in the state to dial the 104 Arogya Sahayavani helpline to report any instance of traders hiking the price of masks due to the spread of the COVID19 virus.

Sleuths from the enforcement wing of the commercial tax department launched a crackdown on nearly 35 medical stores in Belagavi on Thursday, amid reports that they are selling masks at exorbitant prices, reports the Deccan Herald.

A mask worth Rs 20 is sold for Rs 200 without a bill or GST. The 35 shops were fined Rs 20,000 for unethical practices,” said K Raman, joint commissioner, commercial tax department (Northern Range), the story added.

Indomitable spirit of Nagaratna Ramagouda

A pink teddy bear, posters, soap-bubble makers tucked into the window grill, some birthday caps resting in a neat stack on the TV stand gives a very different look to the office of Ashraya Foundation, the foundation that started for the HIV positive girls post adolescence.

The founder of Ashraya Foundation has a never dieing attitude and she always Where hope never dies.

When death was all she wanted, her little son gave her the strength and inspired her to live and help others like her live. Nagaratna Sunil Ramagouda (34) recently founded Ashraya Foundation to help those affected by HIV and AIDS.

nagratna-ramgoudaIt was in September 1997, five months after we were married. I was just 17. When we approached our family doctor for advice, he said we would have just have three to four months left. We were shocked. I was pregnant and following the doctor’s advice, I got an abortion,’

Depressed, Nagaratna and Sunil locked themselves inside their house for days. But they needed money to survive, and that forced them to return to work. Sunil, an auto driver, was back to ferrying passengers. However, neither Nagaratna nor Sunil told their families about the HIV infection. Sunil had disclosed it to three friends, who maintained secrecy. One of them saw Nagaratna crying and said, “Don’t let yourself die every moment. It is God who decides and so leave it to him. Just take care of yourself.’

Five years later, Nagaratna’s family wanted to know why she wasn’t pregnant yet.

ashraya foundation belagaviThe couple then approached Dr Shivaram. Under his medical supervision, she delivered a HIV-negative baby boy. It was only then that the fear of HIV left Nagaratna and Sunil.

They decided to spread awareness about HIV-AIDS and came out.In 2014 Sunil expired.

It’s been 20 years since Nagaratna has been tested HIV positive. When she and her husband had been first detected with HIV, doctors didn’t offer much hope, and even said that their days are numbered. The period after they decided to come open about their infection was the most difficult phase of their life, she says.

She appeared in many interviews with the press, only with the conviction that awareness would make matters bearable for others like her. She began work with a local civil society organisation and continued there for several years before ideological differences forced her to move out and start her own centre. It’s been three years that her husband passed away, but her spirit stays indomitable.

She has been counselling individuals with HIV at the civil hospital in Belagavi for many years now. She has also been a co-worker for the US Government’s Centre for Disease Control and also for Myrada, an organisation that works on various poverty mitigation interventions and Red Ribbon Express, an AIDS/HIV awareness campaign train by the Indian Railways, among others. She credits these opportunities for the rich experience she has gained in this field. Her foundation, Ashraya Foundation, has a two-tier structure, an advisory team and a team of volunteers who are known as the ‘Youth for Seva’, which comprises of 30 dedicated college students.

I don’t want girls and women with HIV to go through what I had. Some may have the strength, but not all do,” said Nagaratna, adding that the Ashraya Foundation aims to provide counselling, training, education and employment.

The girls (currently there are only four girls due to lack of space and resources) at the foundation have learnt sewing and craft. She takes them for regular checkups and ensures they are enrolled for correspondence courses too. They make paper bags, greetings, envelopes with warli motifs on them, shopping bags from saris, machine covers, assorted quill earrings and the like. These are sold at exhibitions and on order as well.

School Chalaye Hum: Gouri Gajbar

School Chale Hum’ was a famous song back in the 90s which was been telecast on Doordarshan and Akashvani. Made for the ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan’, the video shows the efforts of the Government put in to make sure that millions of children, who were deprived of school education, finally get to sit in a classroom and have access to knowledge.

The video’s simplicity and lyrics are what make it very close to our hearts even today. Gouri’s efforts towards providing education to the needy remind us of this song after decades.

Born and brought up in Belagavi, Mrs. Gouri Gajbar was a practicing interior designer and her husband is also from the same field. At the same time, she used to visit many orphanages and old age homes to offer some voluntarily help.

gouri-gajbarFrom the past 3 years, she started focusing on government schools and surveyed many of them regarding education been provided there. She wanted to join some government school and serve as a teacher. She quit her profession and joined school no. 5 and school no. 20 as a teacher and teaches here every day for one hour voluntarily.

Simultaneously she started a small school (or call it a playgroup) at her own residence in Tilakwadi. She named it ‘Second Home’ and what’s very unique about this school is that she teaches the underprivileged children of masons, domestic helpers, watchman, maids, auto drivers and children of nearby construction site workers. The children are been taught Basic English and motor skill activities.

There is also counseling held on many topics. There is a fun day every month where the children are taken outdoors to play games and have snacks. Heath and dental awareness checkup camps were conducted recently. The school has indoor games and also a small gym for the kids to play around after study. Presently there are 26 boys and girls from the age group of 4 to 12 years who come daily for the classes. The education is free for the students here and Gouri bears all the expenses on her own.

gouri-gajbar-1Gouri appeals to the people in society to do visit government schools regularly and serve as a teacher if possible. Ladies can also join her in their daily free time to teach the underprivileged children at her playgroup.

If School Chale Hum was a song for the children, we can now have a song ‘School Chalaye Hum’ for people like Gouri who are standing out of the box and running a school for the underprivileged.

Written by Mandar Kolhapure as narrated by Gouri Gajbar.

Cancer didn’t bring me to my knees, it brought me to my feet – Mayura Shivalkar

When Mayura Shivalkar crossed the finish line in 70.3 (miles) Ironman Colombo in February 2018, there wasn’t a winners’ medal waiting for her at the podium- but her family, doctors and people aware of her resilient background, already knew what Mayura had achieved- she became India’s only cancer surviving triathlete to complete the half ironman – a thought that seemed impossible at first.

Mayura Shivalkar who completed the event in a time of 7 hrs 25 mins against a closing cut off time of 8.30 hours managed to take the challenge successfully.

In Feb 2020, she came 1st and Men and women category out of 42, She stood at 18th position in the Tigerman Nagpur Competition.

Mayura ShivalkarMayura said What an awesome experience, I do one event in Feb since 2018, just to remind you that I am alive and going strong, it’s a mental game, coming out of my own personal challenges and FEAR.

She says – Happy that got PODIUM and won the race in overall women’s category, awesome feeling to be a first TIGER(wo)MAN of Nagpur.

46-year-old Mayura Shivalkar. Mayura is not just a daughter, a wife, and a mother but this 46-year-old is also a Triathlete who has completed the Iron Man (swimming, cycling and running) while being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mayura ShivalkarShe underwent 8 chemotherapies, 30 radiation sessions while training for her marathons. Mayura right now has to her credit 7 full marathons, 30 + half marathons- the most recent being the Mumbai Marathon that took place in January 2020.

The battle against Cancer has taught me a lot; the uncertainties in life and how we take life for granted. We should never neglect the smallest of medical conditions and get regular checkups done.

A one-hour session for physical and mental fitness is a must,” Mayura says.

She believes her unrelenting attitude in the face of difficulties is what helped her survive cancer.

Having been through this journey, I now wish to spread awareness that overcoming cancer can be equivalent to conquering any other challenge in the shortest possible time – after proper treatment. That’s why I finished my race with the quote – “Cancer didn’t bring me to my knees, it brought me to my feet”.

Running made me more strong – mentally and physically. It taught me to face the odds with a smiling face. I feel all women above the age of 40 should run to avoid depression and menopause issues.” Mayura concluded.

Lack of Infra & Facilities at Belagavi airport to make it International – Angadi

Since Flights have commenced at the Sambra Belagavi Airport there were campaigns on Twitter that Belagavi should be made an international airport.

Today as per the story posted by todaybreakings.com, Speaking to the media persons here on Sunday, Angadi said “there are no facilities and infrastructure in Belagavi to make the international airport. The land is a major concern. Already we have taken land for Rani Channamma University, Visvesvaraya Technological University, for roads and for many more purposes. If we go to get more land people will beat us. So, if I say we will make it in Belagavi that would be just a political statement”, he clarified.

Angadi also said that he had met Narendra Modi along with Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi seeking to make one international airport in North Karnataka.

Suresh Angadi
Suresh Angadi

As per Angadi Hubballi has all the land that is required and the infrastructure for making it into an international airport and hence he endorsed that Hubballi should get the International tag.

Angadi claimed that Belagavi has more passengers and more flights than Hubballi but that does not matter.

So the statement of Suresh Angadi has not gone well with the netizens and many of them are infuriated over this statement.

In reality, however as per sources, there is ample land still for expansion of apron and new terminal on the west side of the existing terminal. For an international airport, one needs an immigration and customs desk and normally nothing more with existing facilities.

Angadi also said he was trying to woo the Airline companies to start a direct flight to Delhi.

The many colors of Belagavi’s Holi

$

Few countries in the world celebrate a festival with as much fervor across the country as Holi is in India. And to make things special, Belagavi is one city which celebrates it not once but twice, in a matter of a week.

Belagavi’s Holi is special mainly because of its geographic demarcation. While ‘Belagavi’ celebrates it the day after Holi, the areas coming under the erstwhile Sangli presidency, ie. Shahapur, Vadgaon and Angol celebrate it on the fifth day, ie. The Rang Panchami day. This makes matters curious.

holi belagavi
Photo: Manish Khapare

On one hand, kids and the youth experience double the joy, the common-folk and the women face problems on both days for they cannot move out. You have known many households where the school going kids and the working men have left home early to cross the ‘border’ and move to the other side on respective days!

holi belagavi
Photo: Manish Khapare

It all sounds funny now, but we have had exams, even SSLC ones, on days when it was played in Shahapur-Vadgaon-Angol. Belagavi’s Holi fever begins days in advance when Ganpat Galli, Shahapur Khade Bazar, and Kirloskar road see road-side shops displaying ‘Pichkaari’ masks, small balloons, colors- dry and water-based, weird wigs, drag costumes and other paraphernalia associated with playing with colors. Kids duly purchase new pichkaaris every year.

Of late, a lot of awareness has been created about not wasting water and hence many prefer dry colors. Gone are the days when ‘saree colors’ or ‘Khadi color was the norm, especially in Shahapur-Vadgaon where many saree factories were located and this color was easily accessible.

holi belagaviCome D-day and you’d wake up with crackles of laughter of kids and loud sounds of bikes zooming on the roads. Every youth turns a macho man behind the anonymity of color smeared on his face. Riding triple seat, throwing balloons on unsuspecting people on the roads and shouting loudly is the staple of the day. Deshmukh road, RPD cross has seen scenes of hundreds of shirts being hung on overhead electricity wires, clothes stripped from bikers as they pass by. However, this trend has somehow died down of late. If men are on the streets, women are not far behind. Knocking doors and pulling friends out, they enjoy in their very own way.

holi belagavi

The new trend of having public Holi celebrations has helped aggregate people at one place with music to boot. The police also clamp down the festivities after 1.00 p.m. enabling many office-goers to move freely post-lunch.

This year however due to the COVID19 virus no major public gatherings and celebrations have been planned.

There are places in India where Holi is played for days together. One day or many, Holi brings joy and leaves memories behind. Stains notwithstanding.

The temple, that houses the idol of the cursed mythical warrior, and is located in a narrow Pangul galli off Ganpat galli in the heart of the city, is believed to be the second in India. Devotees perform ‘lotangan’ (urulu seve) to pay their respects to the epic character of the ‘Mahabharata’ on the occasion.

File Photo

In Pangul galli, a large number devotees performed “Lotangan puja” (“urulu seve”) at Ashwathama temple. It is believed that people do the Lotangan after their wish has been granted by the lord. The temple in the narrow street of Pangul Galli houses the idol of the cursed mythical warrior. A large number of devotees made a beeline to perform the lotangan, even as onlookers kept splashing ‘gulal’ on them.

People pay obeisances to Ashwathama, the mythical warrior

A special pooja is also performed and the temple committee distributed prasad. However, not many visit this shrine during rest of the year thanks to the curse attached to Ashwathama, who was believed to have killed the sons of the Pandavas. It is believed that seeing the idol brings bad luck.

ASI could declare SPM road camouflaged ditch as National Monument soon

The White topping work on SPM road had begun a couple of months ago and still is underway. One side has been done but on the other side near the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Garden, there is a camouflaged ditch if we can call it.

Day after day Truck, mini trucks get stuck in this and then there is a huge traffic jam.

Not once but 8-9 times the same spot, same ditch the tyres of the truck get stuck.

The ASI- Archaeological Survey of India recently surveyed this spot and is gearing up and gathering documents on the basis of which it can declare this camouflaged ditch as a national monument of great importance.

The Smart city officials who seem to have some great knowledge or no knowledge about the same never even work on this ditch. There could be internal official problems like Whose ditch Is It Anyway?

The citizens are now bugged up with this and now only after a monument is declared will it be decorated with and people would get a chance to see the camouflaged ditch.

stuck spm road The Police also have played a vital role in this monument to come to this stage. They have loads of barricades and once Belagavi was called as a city of barricades but they did not find one to place it near this
camouflaged ditch.

Maybe they never saw it, we can’t hurl abuses on them can we, after all, they too are humans and to err is human.

No Public Holi festivities this time due to COVID-19

Belagavi’s Holi is special mainly because of its geographic demarcation. While ‘Belagavi’ celebrates it the day after Holi, the areas coming under the erstwhile Sangli presidency, ie. Shahapur, Vadgaon, and Angol celebrate it on the fifth day, ie. The Rang Panchami day.

The new trend of having public Holi celebrations has helped aggregate people in one place with music to boot.

But this time as experts across the world have advised reducing mass gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus, no public event for Holi has been organized.

The Commissioner of Police Belagavi City BS Lokesh Kumar has appealed to Holi revelers to avoid mass celebrations.

Abhay Patil organizes Holi Milan, Laxmi Hebbalkar organizes Womania Holi and Kiran Jadhav Rang Barse each year. But this year everyone has decided not to host any event due to the advice.

There are places in India where Holi is played for days together. One day or many, Holi brings joy and leaves memories behind. Stains notwithstanding.

COVID is an airborne infection. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, (a) between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) and (b) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

The best measure towards prevention is, as WHO has specifically advised, good hygiene, particularly hand hygiene. Avoiding crowded places is another recommendation. In this context, it is reasonable to celebrate Holi in moderation. NOT BECAUSE those water balloons are made in China, as one Whatsapp forward says, but because mindful social distancing is the key.

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
