Food for needy: Community fridge concept picks up in Belagavi

In January 2018, Dharmen Purohit set up a community fridge that provided free food to the needy. People across the city could keep their excess or leftover food, in this community fridge. And since then, the concept caught on in the city. We are not sure but even before this there must have been individuals who were doing a similar kind of work for the society.

Rotary Club Of Belgaum South has come up with a new initiative a 24/7 Free Food Project ANNADAN in association with Niyaz Group of Hotels, Belagavi intending to serve the poor and hungry with fresh food round the clock in November 2018.

Recently Youth Red Cross wing of KLE VK Institute of Dental Sciences opened a fridge for the needy near the Shiva Temple JNMC Campus, Belagavi.

Speaking to AAB, Dharmen said it feels happy to see many are following this up and in turn, the needy are getting benefited. More and more associations, even resident associations must come forward and join this movement. After all, we are just giving something that we have had enough.

We also have the wall of kindness at the Railway Station where people can leave their clothes and other stuff which the needy can pick up.

We have Surendra Shivajirao Angolkar who serves 150+ persons daily at the civil hospital.

Irshad Soudgar of Niyaaz group said people have to come forward share the excess food so that the needy can fulfill their hunger. It may be the smallest gesture one can do, so all those who can share some food should do it at the Community fridges kept across the city.

The Belagavi- Dharwad Rail line via Kittur has made it to the Pink book of the Railways and Rs.1000(one thousand) only have been sanctioned for the same in the budget 2020-21.

The pink book in Railways consists of the various programs or projects that are undertaken or yet to be undertaken. It consists of detailed info on all the different zones of the Indian Railways.

Once the Rail Budget is passed, the ‘Pink Book’ becomes the authority to start preliminary works related to the project.

Expenditure on various heads of accounts on the projects was only allowed after the detailed estimate was sanctioned.

While we get carried away by the announcements, the actual intent of the ministry is known when you see the Pink Book.
Like in this case now the rail route has made it to the Pink book, which means the rail line will be made but when is not known and not surely in 2020-21.
Now the major hurdle will be land acquisition and after which the funds will be sanctioned for the same. Rs.99,83,000 is the estimated cost of the project.

But as a token Rs.1000 has been allocated so that it makes entry into the pink book.

The Economic Times and Statista are on the cusp of launching the inaugural edition of India’s Growth Champions 2020, an ambitious initiative that aims to highlight true accelerators of the Indian economy.

Do’s and Dont’s Novel Coronavirus

$

by Dr.Madhav Prabhu

Concerns are now being raised about a new global epidemic that is knocking at our doorsteps the coronavirus infection. With India recording our first few confirmed cases and many more suspects we can no longer ignore this threat.

The recent epidemic which originated in Wuhan China was first recorded in December 2019 and due to Chinese policy was then ignored or rather downplayed but the authorities. Soon though it came to light that this was not just an ordinary virus but a novel one. Let us first understand what a novel virus is.

We have often heard the saying a known enemy is better, similarly with viruses a known virus is better to handle. A novel virus is one that has previously not caused infections in humans, whose genetic sequence is unknown and not much information is available about its epidemiology.

The Coronavirus in question is an RNA virus named as 2019 nCOV and belongs to the genus Betacoronavirus, subgenus Sarbecovirus. The virus was first discovered in humans who worked and handled seafood in the fish markets of Wuhan. The subgenus subtype is common in bats so that source of spread cannot be ruled out.

Every viral family has viruses that are specific to a species, for example, the influenza virus has strains that can affect pigs, birds and so on and hence called porcine or avian. Normally they do not breach the species barrier and stay in their own species. The problems start when there is contact between species, so when human virus comes in contact with bat virus, they undergo changes that we call mutations and thus a new virus is produced which can cross species barriers and since the species is never exposed to it, it will cause serious manifestations and hence the name novel. A similar story seems to be the case with 2019 n COV.

So being a novel virus, there is absolutely no memory that the body’s immunity has against this virus, thus like an unknown enemy, we do not know the strategy this virus will adopt and nothing can stop it from wreaking havoc. Also since we never came across this virus, there is no vaccine against it a process which takes roughly their years once the genetic sequence is known

Now coming to the most important problem, since 2019 nCOV is a new virus we do not know what its incubation period is. The incubation period of a virus is the time from which the patient acquires the virus to the point when symptoms first appear. For 2019 nCOV the incubation period is from two to four weeks, mostly fourteen days. That means the patient can be harboring the virus and yet be completely asymptomatic for two to three weeks, during which he is capable of transmitting this virus to others.

Imagine the consequences of this, somebody sitting next to you may transmit the virus to you yet both of you may not know that this has happened.

ncov1This is why the world community is worried. The solution that countries usually adopt is to keep the patient in a closed setting till the incubation period is over, this is called quarantine.

However, as it is apparent from above they may already be patients who have entered the country with a virus in incubation since December 2019. India is such a country that, we may not know what the patient died of and the death may never be reported.

The problem, however, does not stop here, there is a social media campaign to label any and every source as a mode of spreading the virus, but there are only a few verified. The virus usually spreads by aerosols which are tiny droplets that are suspended in air while you sneeze or cough when a person closes by inhales these droplets before they fall he can acquire the infection.

The other route suspected is thorough feces because the virus is shed in stools. There is also a twist in the story, the virus is also spread by fomites, these fomites are nothing but inanimate objects which the patient touches after touching his nose or on surfaces he has coughed on. The virus stays on the object for up to twenty-four hours or even more in moist surfaces like carpets. When another person touches this object and takes it to his nose or eyes the virus is spread to him. Thus you make not have even seen the person who has transmitted the virus to you as he may have left it there hours before. That’s why never take your hands to your face without washing them.

Looking at India we are in a perfect setting for the virus to spread, we don’t keep travel records, the disease is treated by everyone including housewives, quacks and shop keepers, there is no reporting of diseases and there is no accountability.

We are also not equipped to handle a health emergency as evidenced by the epidemics of JE which kills innocent children every year in the north. So the best way out would be to take care of yourself and prevent the spread of the virus. Certain universal precautions need to be taken especially in social interactions and personal hygiene.

So what do we do to prevent the virus from spreading?

First, as of now human to human contact is the only way of the virus spreading, that too through droplets and possibly through stools. So important is to stay away from exposure, for this you should know which patient is likely to have an infection. Most of the patients present like flu. Fever, cough, breathlessness, and body ache are the cardinal symptoms of the disease, sometimes expectoration and diarrhea are also possible, these symptoms are common for many diseases especially in winters. Sometimes a patient can develop severe manifestations in the form of pneumonia and these are the patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, who may succumb to the disease.

Now knowing how the patients present and knowing the mode of transmission the ways to protect yourself would be obvious.

Stay at least one meter that’s three feet away from a patient who has the above symptoms, so as to avoid droplets.

A mask usually an N90 would be an additional precaution. Since you cannot avoid fomites make it a habit not to bring your hands to your nose, mouth or eyes if you have touched likely surfaces.

Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and use it every time you are likely to touch your face.

Wash your hands thoroughly before you eat your food.

A seven-step hand wash technique is advocated by doctors for cleaning hands with soap.

Avoid contact with sick animals and wash hands every time you visit a meat market or fish market.

If you eat non-veg food, cook the meat well and eat boiled and not barbeque meat if possible.

Government of India Department of Ayush has issued an advisory with a role for traditional medicines, but these are debatable and should not make you complacent with universal preventive measures.

If you develop symptoms suggestive of infection, do not panic, keep yourself warm, hydrate yourself, take complete rest and keep yourself indoors. Take help immediately from a qualified medical practitioner and do not delay treatment. Take care of yourself, be very careful but do not be scared and do not panic. Together we can keep ourselves and our country safe.

LPG gas line, electric wires, sewage pipes is a well-cooked recipe for future disasters

The Smart City work in Belagavi seems to be in a hurry to be completed throwing away all norms for safety and citizens’ precautions.

The contractor and the workforce has no idea of any guidelines. They just dig the place lay cables, pipes.

The image Near Karnataka bank Mahantesh Nagar is just one live example of the smart cabling done.

LPG gas line, electric wires, sewage pipesAt so many places the water lines and sewage pipes are damaged and patched up. A deadly crisscrossing of the PNG gas line, electric wires and sewage pipes is a well-cocked recipe for future disasters.

Anybody digging up for water pipeline repair or electric wiretapping are likely to puncture any of these pipes and a potential case to blow up a gas pipeline or electric lines.

Many times earlier as well the HESCOM cables have been damaged while digging and now we also have the gas pipes to it.

The safest way to handle this a clean and dedicated cemented conduits carrying all these pipelines with openings at regular intervals for maintenance. When will our folks understand safety and human life value?

Spreading the fragrance of Humanity: Kasturi Banger

It was Kabira who said in his doha, ‘Kasturi kundal basse, mrug dhundhat ban mahiwhich means that the Kasturi (rare precious fragrance) is within yourself and why search iteverywhere? In today’s world, humanity is a rare precious fragrance and Kasturi Banger is spreading it in abundance.

But finding the fragrance wasn’t so easy for her. She got married to Mahantesh Mali and both were living a simple and happy married life.

Mahantesh was working in industries in Udyambag and Kasturi was a house wife taking care of the family. Years passed by and one day on his birthday, they were diagnosed for being HIV positive. Dreams shattered within seconds, a shock wave passed through their spine as the doctor read out the report saying he had maximum 2 years to live. The fear of inching slowly towards death caused serious effects on his health. In 1994 Mahanteshweighed only 28 kgs and could not even drink water and looked merely like a skeleton.

Kasturi then wiped her own tears and decided to stand firm with her husband. She encouraged Mahantesh to look at life positively and he too decided to remove all the negative thoughts from the mind, look at the positive things around and they both decided to work towards the welfare of the HIV positive patients. Two years passed by and nothing happened to them and this boosted their confidence to work further. They were blessed with a daughter who was tested HIV negative. Happiness returned though in small packages.

In 2008 they started Nandan Makkal Dham at Rail Nagar Belagavi which today houses 40 HIV affected children and orphans out of which 22 are girls and 18 boys. These children have been either left of by their parents or have no one to take care. NMD provides free shelter, food, nutrition, blood transfusion, medicines, treatment, education, clothes and psychological counseling. Various activities, workshops, trainings and awareness programs are conducted for the children at the centre. Children from the age group of 2 to 20 years are part of NMD and till today about 180 children have been a part of their family. HIV affected children have a very weak immunity and are easily prone to serious illness. Medical emergency may occur at any time and in such cases NMD takes care of all the treatments at hospitals. The organization has arranged for131 marriages of their members and other orphans. Many girls come to the centre during pregnancy just like girls go their parent’s house during delivery. They have conducted 83 funeral ceremony of orphans, provided free cancer testing for 900 women and cancer surgery for 43 women.

Unfortunately Mahantesh expired in 2017 and presently Kasturi is looking after NMD all by herself. She is working tirelessly for the welfare of HIV affected people at her centre and also at other places. Kasturi was felicitated with national award by Ministry of women and child development followed by state award from KSAPS. She was also felicitated by many government and non govtorganizations, institutes and corporate houses.

Onus on the society: More than what AIDS does to a person; it’s the behavior of the society that causes more pain. Though a lot of behavior change is observed in the society towards the affected people, a stronger mindset is yet to be developed. People should come forward to help the affected people and also those running such organizations helping such people. Books, stationery, medicines, food and more important spending some time with the children is what they expect from the society. Lets join her in spreading the fragrance of humanity and as Kabir says, Kalkare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab.

Written by Mandar Kolhapure. As narrated by Kasturi Banger.

Anxiety prevails in fears of the future that haven’t happened yet. How often does what you worry about actually happen? Take a pause to recap the last curve of worry that took over you.

Belagavi Desperately needs a Valentine

by Dr. Madhav Prabhu

Valentine’s day is like a wonderful day for everyone, for those in love, it’s an opportunity to express your feelings, for those who oppose this expression it’s a day out protesting it and for those opening their shops it brings great sales.

The pink, purple hearts which actually look nothing like a heart are readily seen in the nook and corner of the city. The guys and gals are dressed their best in the colleges and ours nice to see a small blush on their faces. Somehow the idea kid Valentine itself has caught on everyone’s imagination.

You can love it, you can protest it, you can hate it but you can ignore it anymore. What’s most pointed and can be seen by anyone not blinded by love is that, your feelings or rather the release of hormones are highly commercialized today.

valentine-roseFor example today you can express your hormones as chocolate, teddy bears, roses and so on, I don’t exactly know which one indicates what and why it is only these objects. But certainly, we don’t mind these guys doing business unless to satisfy my Swadeshi friends it is not made in China.

But that’s not what’s bothering us and that’s not why Belagavi is searching for a Valentine. We need someone desperately, someone to take care of us.

Old-Couple-I will tell you who needs a Valentine here, Let’s start with the Elderly in the city.
Economic disparities, health issues have marred the living elderly for a long time. It’s difficult to live a life on redundant shrinking budgets which depend on pensions. Living alone in the city has become dangerous with murders gaining angry now and then. A single health-related event and with no insurance there is nothing to pay. Every home has all NRI son who has plenty of money but can’t give time to his parents. Sadly the elderly are in no position to spend and all they need is time and attention. Forced to suffer or go to an overcrowded old age home life is not very romantic. Suicides in elderly couples this year shows exactly this. It’s these elderly of Belagavi who are dying to have Valentine in their life. Someone who will love them, care for them and comfort them in that phase of life when all they med is a little attention.

cry-clip-artThe second group I can think of is the future of the country the young college-goers. Growing up in a competitive world where you are judged not by your character or qualities but by the marks you obtain in your exams is not easy. Growing up to the expectation of your parents is not easy. Satisfying every unfulfilled dream of your parents is not easy. Growing up in nuclear families, sometimes with single parents is not easy. Measuring up to your peers, showing off your brands is not easy. The parents think all that the children need is a pouch full of pocket money but in reality, all that they need is some time and attention, someone to tell that its ok to fail, its ok to not wear a brand, it’s ok not to have a job. They desperately need a Valentine just to love them unconditionally, to understand them to give them time, to recognize their hidden talent, to stop them from hanging themselves and putting themselves under the rail tracks, they desperately need a Valentine.

Another group, the Women of Belagavi. Living as a single working lady is miserable nowadays. Targeted by goons, sometimes their own families and relatives and in many cases the law itself it’s horrible for a working mom. The ever-rising prices, shrinking salaries, lack of social support make raising your own kids impossible, literally pushing women to drown their kids and themselves. Growing violence against women, female foeticide there is no end to it. It is these sisters or can we say good friends who need a Valentine.

Someone to tell them that’s outs ok to not have a male partner, to tell them that it is ok to wear what they are comfortable in, to tell them that they can walk at any hour of the day and yet not be teased or molested. To tell them that society holds every mother in high regards, to give them the respect and the attention they deserve. They desperately need a Valentine.

The city as a whole needs a Valentine, an inspirational leader who is not a politician, who will recognize the growing needs of a smart city. A leader who will try to heal the ones suffering and not try to convert their suffering into an opportunity to pick easy votes. A leader who will bring prosperity to the city rather than his private coffers. The city desperately needs a Valentine to say that its ok to speak in any language, it’s ok to celebrate and preserve your right to think and speak freely. The city and its populace are desperately in search of one such Valentine.
