The unrecognized teachers

by Dr. Madhav Prabhu

Happy teachers day to all, teachers are great influences in life, we never know the true extent to which they touch our lives till we leave them behind. We are because they were. Teachers have shaped us, turned is into our present forms. We may have ridiculed them, we may have loved them, we may have hated them, but today I am sure all of us miss them.

But it’s not only these teachers that teach you lessons, there are some we don’t realize too. It’s not lectures that they give us but its mostly life lessons. We never realize these lessons until we decide to learn from them. Everything and everyone is a teacher, we should only not stop learning. Each one of us has a teacher in him/her self, most don’t get him/her out of the box.

Let me share a few lessons that I learned in the last few years, lessons that may seem silly yet were something important in perspective.

My first teacher was my dual SIM mobile. Yup important life lessons learned when I am lonely and have nobody to talk to. My phone taught me that ” I AM A FANTASTIC PERSON “, yes unbelievable right but it did. Somehow in our schedule, we forget the most lovely person we have ever met and that’s ourselves. We forget to talk to ourselves, we forget to acknowledge the great heart that lies within. We don’t talk to ourselves, don’t focus on what we really think and what a really want, we don’t introspect and down the line, we lose the wonderful companion that we are to ourselves.

The dual SIM is something you should try when you are alone and feel lonely, just message on one SIM and reply on other, it’s a nice thing to do, you can tell yourself what you as going through and find solutions for yourself, you can discuss problem when you have nobody to tell and will never be judged for it. Tell me who else gives you that liberty, and at the end of it you are sorted with yourself.

The best thing it does is, it builds for yourself your own image and that is excellent for your self-esteem, you think for yourself where you are heading and if that’s what you aimed at. If you went to a counselor to do this he will charge you a bomb. I can tell myself how high my regards are for myself and say a few rewarding words for all the hard work I do which my boss never does. And while I chat with myself I know what a fantastic person I am and then I stop feeling lonely.

HESCOM is the company which supplies electricity to us, it adds sparkle to our bulbs and tubes, there is no life without power, there is no charge in cell phones and no soaps on the screen without HESCOM. But for a good student, HESCOM gives important life lessons “BE PREPARED FOR THE DARK TIMES “. This is a very important lesson in life and should be remembered especially when you are in the bright of your life. The lights can go off suddenly and you will be left with no alternative. Lights can go off anytime, it could go off in peak summer or even in heavy rains. Power can go out for no reason at all and there is no timing for the light to come back, it never keeps time and you don’t expect punctuality. Problems in life are also the same they can come anytime and make you go dark, they can take away all your comfort and leave you without the pleasures you enjoy the most.

But this unpredictability forces you to fight back, find ways and means to keep our cell phones and televisions work. You buy generators and inverters and you keep them charged and ready always waiting for a darker day. Life is like this too, we have to anticipate a dark day and while we are enjoying the life we need to keep our generators and inverters backed up so we have an uninterrupted power supply. Enjoy all you have but always plan for a cloudy day that’s what I learned from HESCOM.

I learned a lot from potholes too, potholes appear regularly after every rain, they cause so much inconvenience, they spoil the road they spoil your plans and they ruin your vehicles. Pot holes come in different sizes and shapes and you have someone to blame for them always. Potholes can be managed in two ways, just patch up and do a temporary job or reconstruct and do the road again. Whether or not a pothole is developed depends on how well the road has been laid and the material used.

Potholes taught me about failure, failures can be big or small, it can be of different nature and kind. Failures can ruin your life, they can break you forever or they can take away your will to succeed. Failure can come after every rain of success. We always have someone to blame for our failures. There are two ways of correcting our failures either do a patch up of compromises or change the way we approach our target and when we do that what material we use, to success matters, the hard work we put matters and this determines whether we will succeed. So potholes, taught me the mantra to success “HARD WORK, QUALITY EFFORTS, AND NO SHORTCUTS “.

There are so many things which teach you and there are so many situations too. These teachers teach you the hard way unlike in school where we are spoon fed, loved and cared for.

Lastly, there is another teacher from I would like to remember today, the super fuel petrol. Petrol prices fluctuate a lot sometimes the price is very high and sometimes a little less, its actually not determined on the ground, it is determined in the commodity market, its called Satta, an inflated economy, its an assumption and is based on no solid foundation. High prices can burn your pockets and break your back. Petrol can give you the pleasure of driving for some time but ultimately it will burn away and leave behind carbon and smoke. Petrol if saved for yourself it best for your pocket and country. The more you use petrol the more you burn your pockets, the more you damage your engine.

Petrol is like your ego, it’s there in everyone, sometimes more and sometimes less, its price is also based on no reality it’s based on your own perception about yourself, there is so much inflation for no reason. It takes you a little high, you can get happy satisfying it sometimes but ultimately it will burn you down and leave behind only the sort of hatred.

Ego kept to yourself or used a little less it best for yourself and your relationships with the outer world. More the ego more the damage you do. So the raising prices of petrol should remind and teach us the effects of inflated egos. There are plenty of teachers out there all you need is a good student.

Barricades have been put at Dhamveer Sambhaji Maharaj Chowk for smooth flow of traffic during the festive season.

Now one cannot go to Kirloskar road due to the barricading and they have to go up to Hotel Pavan cross take a U-turn and then come on College road and head to Kirloskar road.

From Kirloskar road, one has to take a U-turn at Sanchayni Circle and then go on to College road.

According to the police this has been done to ensure smooth flow of traffic at the circle and will be limited upto the Ganesh Festival only.

Heavy traffic will also be diverted from Globe cinema in Camp.

This is causing a lot of hardships for the commuters as this is the main junction to make entry into the main city market. There are hospitals as well but all will have to travel more and then get to your destination.

Commuters coming from Gogte Circle can take the Postman circle, Shivaji Road, Ramling Khind Galli and then Kirloskar road.

Maintaining good posture can reduce the strain

$

We all are aware of the fact that good posture is extremely important for our well being. We realise that the bad posture is the result of the bad habits that we are used to such as sitting, standing or other activities in our day to day life over a number of years which is seen in many people today. Bad posture is usually seen in those involved in long sitting activity at work, lifting heavy objects, etc. But only a few realise the importance and the need to have a good posture.

What is posture?

Posture is the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down. Good posture is the correct alignment of body parts supported by the right amount of muscle tension against gravity. Without posture and the muscles that control it, we would simply fall to the ground.

In my opinion, from the mother’s womb(fetal position) to whatever activity we do today involves a lot of flexion/ bending forward attitude. But what about extension activity? Normally, we do not consciously maintain normal posture. Instead, certain muscles do it for us, and we don’t even have to think about it. Several muscle groups, including the hamstrings and large back muscles, are critically important in maintaining good posture. While the ligaments help to hold the skeleton together, these postural muscles, when functioning properly, prevent the forces of gravity from pushing us over forward. Postural muscles also maintain our posture and balance during movement.

postureJust think of this activity in normal individuals after a prolonged sitting work at office after you return home. Lying down on your back on a thin mat and no pillow beneath your head for about 10 minutes. What happens is that the spine that has gone into stress the whole day is pulled down by the gravity thus correcting the posture. At the same time take long breaths through your nose and blow out slowly from the mouth. This has been helpful to a lot of my clients specially IT professionals.

Why is good posture important?

Good posture helps us stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions that place the least strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities.

Correct posture:

Helps us keep bones and joints in correct alignment so that our muscles are used correctly, decreasing the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in degenerative arthritis and joint pain.

Reduces the stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together, minimizing the likelihood of injury.

Allows muscles to work more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy and, therefore, preventing muscle fatigue.

Helps prevent muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain.

To maintain proper posture, you need to have adequate muscle flexibility and strength, normal joint motion in the spine and other body regions, as well as efficient postural muscles that are balanced on both sides of the spine. In addition, you must recognize your postural habits at home and in the workplace and work to correct them, if necessary.

postureResults of poor posture

Poor posture can lead to excessive strain on our postural muscles and may even cause them to relax, when held in certain positions for long periods of time. For example, you can typically see this in people who bend forward at the waist for a prolonged time in the workplace. Their postural muscles are more prone to injury and back pain.

Several factors contribute to poor posture–most commonly, stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak postural muscles, abnormally tight muscles, and high-heeled shoes. In addition, decreased flexibility, a poor work environment, incorrect working posture, and unhealthy sitting and standing habits can also contribute to poor body positioning.

Can I correct my posture?

In a word, yes. Remember, however, that long-standing postural problems will typically take longer to address than short-lived ones, as often the joints have adapted to your long-standing poor posture. Conscious awareness of your own posture and knowing what posture is correct will help you consciously correct yourself. With much practice, the correct posture for standing, sitting, and lying down will gradually replace your old posture. This, in turn, will help you move toward a better and healthier body position.

Your Physiotherapist can assist you with proper posture, including recommending exercises to strengthen your core postural muscles. A Physiotherapist is the one who can have your complete postural assessment done and can also assist you with choosing proper postures during your activities, helping reduce your risk of injury.

Tips for common daily activities.

postureHow do I sit properly?

Keep your feet on the floor or on a footrest, if they don’t reach the floor.

Don’t cross your legs. Your ankles should be in front of your knees.

Keep a small gap between the back of your knees and the front of your seat.

Your knees should be at or below the level of your hips.

Adjust the backrest of your chair to support your low- and mid-back or use a back support.

Relax your shoulders and keep your forearms parallel to the ground.

Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time.

postureHow do I stand properly?

Bear your weight primarily on the balls of your feet.

Keep your knees slightly bent.

Keep your feet about shoulder-width apart.

Let your arms hang naturally down the sides of the body.

Stand straight and tall with your shoulders pulled backward.

Tuck your stomach in.

Keep your head level-your earlobes should be in line with your shoulders. Do not push your head forward, backward, or to the side.

Shift your weight from your toes to your heels, or one foot to the other, if you have to stand for a long time.

What is the proper lying position?

Find the mattress that is right for you. While a firm mattress is generally recommended, some people find that softer mattresses reduce their back pain. Your comfort is important.

Sleep with a pillow. Special pillows are available to help with postural problems resulting from a poor sleeping position.

Avoid sleeping on your stomach.

Sleeping on your side or back is more often helpful for back pain. If you sleep on your side, place a pillow between your legs. If you sleep on your back, keep a pillow under your knees.

The Smart city projects all over are giving an impetus towards the use of Public Bike Sharing, the smart, eco-friendly and healthy mode of transport. Under the ‘Public Bike Sharing’ project cycle stations with docking plates, signage & instruction panels are put up across the city.
The same was planned for Belagavi as well and all major white-topped roads will have a dedicated cycle track as well. In India, already 25- 30 percent of daily trips are by walking & cycling which needs to be preserved with better facilities for them on roads. Current cycling trends show that the majority of cycling is done for transport by the poor. There is also a growing tribe of very high-end cyclists who do this for leisure and endurance exercise.

Compared to other public transportation projects, cycle sharing systems are very inexpensive, fun and people-friendly. Cycle sharing systems can be well be utilized or integrated as a feeder system which can provide first & last-mile connectivity to public transport systems.

MLA south presses on Cycle board and electric cycle/ScooterMLA south presses on Cycle board and electric cycle/ScooterMLA Belagavi South Abhay Patil met Shri Rakesh Singh ji Chairman Smart City, presented him a memorandum and explained the importance of cycle boards, electric cycle/scooter.

He said, In coming days, after approval of this project Belagavi will be India’s first city to implement Cycle board /Electric scooter. A plan is being prepared to have a successful implementation of this project.
The Other smart cities provide bicycles on rent(Hourly basis) which are to be run only on a cycle track, bookings are done through a smartphone application and entire system runs smoothly, but in Belagavi we will be excluding bicycles and including cycle board and electric cycle/scooters.

Belagavi Smart city limited had also called in for suggestions for the bicycle sharing in the city.

The Ministry of Urban Development(MoUD), Government of India (GoI) has initiated the Smart City Mission (SCM) and selected Belagavi city to be developed as Smart City. Under the Smart City Scheme, Government has emphasized to improve the basic civic amenities of the cities on one hand and the provision of modern technological advances for ease of living on the other hand.

The Smart City Proposal (SCP) for Belagavi envisions implementing a number of projects divided into Area Based Development (ABD) projects and PanCity components.

Solar Rooftop PV project on rooftop of Government buildings under PPP mode is one of these components.

The present Power demand of Belagavi city is about 40 MW and there is a shortfall in supply of about 12 percent leading to a daily outage of a few hours. As a process of achieving self-sufficiency in energy, a minimum of 18% of its energy demand is proposed to be achieved through on‐site power generation from solar energy.

solar_powerUnder smart city development, rooftop solar PV installations are proposed for all new development structures and also for the existing Government Buildings. Various Government Buildings in the Belagavi City surveyed and assessed for the suitability of Rooftop Solar PV installations. Energy consumption pattern, sanctioned power from HESCOM, power evacuation facility and structural capability of the buildings were also evaluated.

The indicative potential capacity across the Seven (07) Government Buildings (the “Government Buildings”) is as below –

Laxmitek Pumping Station Area- 1800 sq M – 120 kWp capacity planned

Hindalaga Pumping Station – 150 sq M – 10 kWp capacity planned
