As the present Dharwad-Belagavi railway line passes through Londa, it takes more time to travel by rail than by road. It has been a long-standing demand of public and elected representatives of Karnataka to lay a direct line between Dharwad and Belagavi preferably via Kittur. To implement this work, the Final Location Survey for Dharwad-Kittur-Belagavi (90Km) is now included in the Budget 2019-20.

Shri Suresh Angadi, Hon’ble Minister of State of Railways was instrumental in getting the work approved, in order to fulfill the public demand. Now Survey for Final Location for the proposed new railway line alignment has been sanctioned. In a review meeting held recently on 01.08.2019 in which Shri Suresh Angadi, Hon’ble Minister of State of Railways decided that the work shall be taken up immediately. Final Location Survey is assigned to Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE) which can quickly complete the survey with State Government support. The survey will start after work is awarded and the agency is fixed.

Hon’ble MoSR has indicated that the progress of the survey work will be reviewed every fortnight and whole work shall be completed in 2 months.

The proposed new railway line passes through Dharwad, Kittur, and Hirebagewadi to reach Belagavi. The distance between Belagavi and Dharwad will reduce by 31 Kms once this new line is laid. This will benefit the public of Dharwad and Belagavi, making the journey between these two smart cities easier and quicker. It will also enable the people of Belagavi to reach Bengaluru, the capital city of State of Karnataka directly.

Batti gul? Go figure out

by Swatee Jog

Uday is a very noble soul indeed, keeping us updated about everything that happens in Belagavi, instantaneously. So when someone says, do you know so and so happened, you invariably say, Yes I know, AAB has sent a message. There’s just one message of his which we all just don’t like is that of a power cut.

And he’s done just that. He told us days ago that tomorrow ‘Batti gul’ in Belagavi. As though he’s saying, ‘Go figure out what you wanna do the whole day’. It is an irritation that bothers everyone at home.

Power-CutFirst of all, the housewife who is dependent on the electricity for her Sunday morning grinding for the Chutneys for breakfast, the oven, the microwave to satiate the hunger of the family who tends to eat more when idle. She needs it again for the vacuum cleaner, for the washing machine and then the background music to tide her through all this work.

No current? She has only two options, either wake up early on Sunday and finish all tasks or just drop that idea. Both major irritants. The kids are cranky for they don’t get their dose of TV. The fridge won’t budge and all ice-creams turn mellow.

The men-folk are confused about how to spend time at home when each one actually starts looking at the other and wonders what to speak. A tricky situation for kids who dread that the parents’ and grandparents’ attention suddenly turns on them. You’re lucky if you have a genset or the inverter at home, which supports you for a few hours.

Most ice cream centers shrug off their shoulders helplessly by noon. The only solace is the mall, the theatre and the fancy stores on Civil Hospital road which keep running on generators. So off you head to cool your day at the theatre. Mark my words, you are not going to get a ticket easily tomorrow. Keep your phones and power banks charged.

ideaToo bored to go out? Here’s a handy list for you to spend your day tomorrow.

1. Sleep till as late as you can. Wake up to brunch actually

2. Sleep some more in the noon. A long siesta has done no one any harm

3. Pull out your cupboards and do some cleaning. You’ll thank yourself for all the space that will get free

4. If you can manage yourself, clean the house without troubling anyone and without yelling and yapping.

5. The weather’s just fine for a small picnic to just about anywhere around Belagavi. Vaijanath, Rakaskop, Hidkal Dam, Kittur Fort, Sogal, stroll in the Belagavi Fort, walk around the lake.

6. Take the kids or your friends to show the wonderful temples at Halasi, Degaon, Kittur, Degaloli. If you know little about these places, just Google or refer my articles online on the same!

7. There’s plenty of cleaning required in the flood affected areas. You can volunteer in some village to help them

8. Join your mom/spouse/ grandma to go shopping for the coming week. Groceries, clothes, veggies, locks need lost keys and repairs need time. A home needs so much, you’d never known earlier.

9. Ganesh Chaturthi is just around the corner. Search on youtube for some innovative décor ideas. You will thank HESCOM who gave you a whole day to experiment with decoration

10. Meet your friends at some open space. Belagavi is lush green these days. Don’t spend your time inside restaurants staring at each other. Travel to Hindalga, Ambewadi, Camp, Fort, Yellur Gad and chat with friends to your heart’s content

If you think of more ideas, please post them here for others to see. Anyway, we’re all going to check AAB till the phone battery goes phutt.

If you are still left with time, just stare at the watch. 9 to 5 is a pretty short time in office, but much longer when you stare at the clock that long!

First published April 26, 2019

The Belagavi Smart City Limited has in a significant move to improve the efficiency of door-to-door collection and transportation of solid waste. The BSCL has decided to introduce radio frequency identification (RFID) tag system and has commenced installing them in a few areas already in Belagavi city.

The tags are nailed on the entrance of the door and have been done in areas like Bhagaya Nagar already.

Under the system, households will be fixed with chip embedded RIFD tags that contain an integrated circuit and antenna to transmit data to the RFID reader. Similarly, sanitary workers, who visit their respective wards to collect garbage from households, will be provided with RIFD reader and also the dumper will have one. It becomes active when the garbage collectors visit households to collect domestic waste.

rifd-tags smart city belagaviThe RFID reader records various data including quantum of collection, date and time of collection, household coverage and others. Information collected from the RFID tags is then transferred to the host computer system or control room and the data is stored in a database for analysis.

The authorized persons, who have access to the control room or host computer, can monitor the progress of garbage collection on a real-time basis. Based on the data, he can command the concerned sanitary workers to do specific tasks.

This system when in place will be monitored from the Command center at Vishveshwaraya Nagar.

Yours faithfully Shravan

by Dr. Madhav Prabhu

Shrawan Mase Harsha Manase’, the holy month of Shravan is upon us in Belagavi. This month is so fascinating that poets cannot resist writing on its beauty, sages are so excited that they want to go out and see something new and they want to do it for the next four months calling it chaturmas. The greenery is fascinating, there are so many shades of green that even the best artist will fall short of imagination to describe. Ok for those unromantic people like me, there is a lesson here, green is not merely green and nature gives you a shade card of all of them, there is army garden, asparagus green, pine green, mint green, forest green, turquoise green, emerald green and sea green too, uff I haven’t seen a green sea, yet we have a shade of that green too, I am sure All About Belgaum will put a shade card for you too, so you recognize the many shades of green.

shravan1

But coming back Shravan offers all this on a platter, you don’t believe me then take this shade card and go to Tillari or even someplace close like Nanawadi. The rivers are full Markandeya, Mallaprabha is overflowing, the falls are at their full glory, chatting loudly with the rocks, gossiping about the tourist as they bathe, collecting the occasional beer bottles hurled on to them. The skies are bluish black and the sun plays hide and seek romancing with the clouds.

Farmer- Work Khanapur=2
The green Fields

Nature will make you fall in love without a doubt, you have to melt, looking at the splendor of mother earth if this does not make you fall in love them perhaps you really do come from Venus or Mars.

But what attracts me most is the caricature of the people we meet in Shravan, no these are not the merely romantic ones, there is a full assortment to offer.

Let’s begin with the Vallya cha Valmiki types, the transforming types. Yupp Shravan starts with gatari amawasya, to those who don’t know about it, in Belagavi we have two festivals which are rare to outsiders one is gatari and the other is undri, still wondering well gatari is where we give respectability to the gutters, you are still wondering right but it’s true the gutters are the most useful infrastructure to us imagine life without them, cities will be chocked, so what’s done here in gatari is that you get so drunk that you have to fall in the gutter and since you are so drunk you don’t mind it at all. Undri is when you offer mutton to the stead of Lord Ganesha Mushak raj, let’s not get to Undri in Shravan we will have time to discuss it later.

shravan3
But then gatari is a commitment, it’s a silent pledge that the person makes to the night that he or nowadays even she, will not consume alcohol or partake meat for a month. It’s Osho evoked in everyone on that one night where you indulge so much that you do not feel like looking at it for a month. Gatari has undergone a sea change over time, is not celebrated in the desi dukans next to the gutters now, we have gatari parties, gatari get together and gatari dances too. So if you were used to full moon days with milk and all that on Kojagiri, this would come as a no moon day shock right. Well, I am not against this infact I would say we declare this as a festival so the municipal corporation would have to clean the gutters at least once a year and yes before Shrawan.

shravan-gatari-webdunia
But my focus is the Transformer, and for those who don’t associate with Valmiki they are like Rahul’s who suddenly transform from Bangkok fame to Shiv Bhakts, people who eat meat by tons and suddenly transform to temple goers. The transformers are many, some don’t like to see meat, some don’t even like to smell, some even avoid seeing advertisements containing meat products.

I have seen people not taking part in birthday celebrations because cakes have eggs, people who stop taking cough syrup because it contains alcohol base, and those who avoid going to bus stand because they can’t avoid seeing Niyaz. Vegetables are in demand and fruits suddenly look nutritious. The need for animal proteins without which there is no life tumbles like the share market. Niyaz, Khyber seem like deserted haunted places. Foods like mutton, chicken are converted to living animals like sheep, goat, and hens. Maneka Gandhi goes suddenly out of business and discussion on which pandhra tambda is best is converted to how vegetarian lifestyle is celebrated and amazing. The transformers are actually the best hibernating animals, they are conscious but their love for nonveg suddenly goes on for hibernation.

beard

Then there are the beardos, people who grow their facial hair in Shrawan. You know what this is not new to Westerners, there is a no shave November, where you grow a bread to attract attention to the cancer victims who lose them before of chemotherapy. But here the reasons are not to create awareness on vegetarianism. I actually asked the reasons for it and they say its to be so pious that you forget your own beauty and think only of the beauty of the Devine. People don’t cut nails too and that’s a little extreme I think. The beardos are actually the true representation of us, the clean-shaven, soft-spoken, white colored gentlemen are merely British virtues, we were forced to emulate to get lucrative jobs, we Indians never bothered about looks is what some justify and on independence day growing beard is like liberation from foreign etiquette. Beards are perfectly justified in shravan, students, office staff, teachers all of them can get away with it in settings which otherwise would not allow them to sport bread, would you otherwise think of going to a doctor with a beard in KLE hospital, well Shravan you will.

Then we have the losers and that included meat shop owners, hairdressers, bar owners and hoteliers, there are simply no takers. Business is run by a few honest alcoholics who never give up on their one true love. These guys are like the saving grace for many businesses. Imagine without these angels, thousands of people in the bars, hotels, pubs would lose their jobs, alcoholics actually save families while ruining their own, have you seen such selflessness. There are also big-time gainers and the best of them are the priests the poojaris, their season starts with shravan, then there is Ganapathi and Belagavi has private and public ones in plenty, then pitrupaksha, then Dasra and Diwali, the market continues to grow till December when the slack season of marriages and occasional poojas begins.

Lastly, there are the foodies, the extremely vegetarians, the ones with a sweet tooth, and Shravan is a delight to these harmless food lovers too.

We start with Tambit, Ladoo and patoli on Nag panchami, there is Naralibhat on Rakhi day, every Monday and Friday there is Shirwale, Kadbu, Mangana, Sakharbhat, Kheer, Puranpoli, Hulgi, Huggi and the list goes on and on.

shravan5 patoli Narali-Bhat-1 shirwale Huggi mangane Tambit

And if you are in Belagavi you get dishes from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa provided you have the right friends. A true foodie will wait all year to taste these delicious mouth-watering delicacies. Some of these foodies are actually one who has pledged to fast in shravan, to diet, to lose weight but this world is not fair to them, they are kept tempted by the sweets and the aromas of Khuskhus, Keshar and Kewada mixed with Jaggery and coconut. The diet soon gives way to force feed and the weight involuntarily moves towards the right. The sweet food is what defines shravan for many. The problem is only when eid comes in shravan and you have to limit to sherkorma and give away the biryani. Infact my Muslim friends always thank me for being veg because then they get chicken at prices, they would never expect otherwise, so while they thank me while hogging biryani I get the sweet shirkurma as a consolation. The world revolves around foodies and inflation is invariably food driven.

These are some special people I associate with shravan, I am sure you must be knowing a few too, don’t forget to acknowledge their presence, cheers, let the festivities begin.

The Karnataka government is set to unveil a new IT policy in a month that will encourage investments in the information technology sector in Tier-II cities like Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburgi and other places.

Additional Chief Secretary of IT, BT and S&T Department EV Ramana Reddy said Karnataka continues to dominate the IT and biotechnology sectors. The new policy will offer incentives for startups and budding entrepreneurs to go beyond Bengaluru which has reached saturation.

The present policy will be five years in 2020 and a revision is necessary to spread the IT sector and its innovations to Tier-2 cities.

Stakeholders aired their concern about students from Tier-2 and 3 cities were not job-ready owing to lack of exposure which was inhibiting the growth of IT sectors across the State.

Belagavi South MLA Abhay Patil met Met Hon PWD Minister Shri Govind Karjol and presented a plan to decongest the traffic on the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Marg (From Railway over Bridge- Shri Basaveshwar Circle (Goaves Circle) -third Railway gate – RPD cross- Bhagyanagar cross- Hari Mandir Cross).

The said road has enormous traffic and with no traffic signals, RPD cross is a chaotic most of the times.

The minister has agreed to release funds for the vehicle underpass at RPD Cross and the MLA hopes vehicle underpass will for sure give rest to the inconvenience caused to the citizens of Belagavi and reduce accidents and ensure smooth flow of traffic.

The city already has one pedestrian underpass near the Court which is now a filthy place which no one uses.

We believe still this a plan and the exact location of entry and exit will be final once the Plan is made by the PWD.

The Gulf News, has made this story which states that Suresh Kumar Krishna Pillai, 59, originally from Kerala, was on a business trip to the war-torn country, but disappeared within days of landing in Aden, Yemen on July 2.

Pillai’s friend and business partner Shivadasan Valappil, Pillai had gone to Yemen to secure a loan which he hoped would fund a massive Ethanol (alcohol fuel) manufacturing plant that the businessman was trying to set up in Belgaum in the southwest Indian state of Karnataka.

It’s a multimillion-dollar project sprawling over 140 acres. The plant was nearing completion but as luck would have it, Pillai ran out of funds and the plant was declared a non-performing asset by Indian banks. Left with no choice, he was forced to look elsewhere for funding,” said Vallapil.

Pillai was then called to Yemen to complete certain formalities and release the funds.

Please save my father! He’s stuck in Sana’a, Yemen,” said Jithin (son) in a tweet to Modi and India’s Ministry of External Affairs. “He’s an industrialist and a businessman in Dubai. We are from Thiruvananthapuram. Please help us to bring him back. We need immediate action,” the tweet added.

Each city has some unique celebrations, Belagavi also boasts of a few and one among them is the Ganesh Festival.
The 11 days the streets are full of people wanting to see the murti’s of the different pandals and people from neighboring towns also join in the celebrations.

The Deccan Herald has published a beautiful story about the same and we are sharing the same –

A celebration that unites all – Divyashri Mudakavi

In 1893, the Indian independence struggle was at its peak. Bal Gangadhar Tilak wanted to attain Swaraj and bring in reformation by steering all the patriotic forces through a public event. To strengthen the bonds at the grassroots level, he thought of appealing them through their religious instinct. This resulted in the revival of the Ganesh Chaturthi celebration.

Tilak made Ganesh Chaturthi a mass celebration. He first used this platform to fuel patriotism in Pune and it received a good response.

Continuing his endeavour, he extended the mass celebration, called Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav, to Belagavi. With the help of freedom fighters Govindrao Yalgi and Gangadhar Rao Deshpande, who were spearheading the freedom struggle in the Belagavi region, he arranged for a mass celebration in Belagavi. The first Sarvajanik Ganesha idol was installed in the residence of Govindrao Yalgi.

In 1905, Tilak visited Belagavi and installed the first bamboo pole for the pandal of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav. It was during that time that the first Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandal was formed in Belagavi in Zenda Chowk (now known as Madhyavarthi Sarvajanik Shri Ganapathi Utsav Mandal). After that, five more mandals (groups) were formed and this made Belagavi a focal point for Ganesh Chaturthi even before Mumbai geared up for it. After attaining independence too, the mass celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi remained a much loved tradition.

Much-awaited festivity

From six mandals in the two decades following 1905 to around 400 in 2016, in Belagavi, this 11-day festival is the much-awaited time for the people of Belagavi. In the initial years, Ganesha idols of three to four feet in height used to be carried on bullock carts and installed in a modest pandal. But today, there are huge idols with ornamental and themed pandals. The mandals usually meet months before the festival to decide on the theme of the idol, decoration, and the cultural and sports festivals that will take place for nearly 10 days till Ananta Chaturdashi as per the Hindu calendar.

To make their Ganesha idols look unique and also compete with other mandals, features like natural-looking eyelashes and even eye lens are added to the idols. Many idols are also adorned with jewellery made of precious stones. They are auctioned among the devotees after the festival is over. Overall, the entire city gets illuminated in the festive spirit.

In Zenda Chowk, which is known as an old market place now, the Ganesha mandal has around 100 active members apart from other supporters. The festival has struck such a chord that around 40,000 to 50,000 people including those from neighbouring states visit the pandal during the last few days before the idol is immersed in water.

The Zenda Chowk Mandal president, Girish Patankar, and treasurer, Ajit Siddannavar, said that the Sarvajanik Ganesha festival helped bring together people during the freedom struggle and now, it has become a platform to boost social and cultural activities.

We have been conducting district-level body building championship and karela (an agriculture implement) carrying competitions every year. Cultural competitions like dance and singing are also held. Social welfare activities like blood donation camps are organised as well.”

While getting the idol to the pandal and immersing it, a procession with traditional instruments like zhanj, drums, lezims are played by youth geared in saffron pagadi (turban). The chant of Ganapathi Bappa Moraya reverberates in the air. After the 11-day festivity, these idols are immersed in man-made ponds earmarked for it.

Idol making

Belagavi is not just known for its celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi but also idol making. Sanjay Killekar, a noted sculptor who has been making huge Ganesha idols since his childhood, burns the midnight oil to meet the demand for idols. “I make around 20 big Ganesha idols in one and a half months. Each idol is around 10 to 12 feet in height. We need a lot of time to make these life-sized idols because of the detailing, artistry and engineering. Every mandal gives specifications and we have to work accordingly.” He said that his idols are booked by mandals from Belagavi, Goa and Maharashtra.

There are also particular streets dedicated to idol makers like Bapat Galli, where there are a number of families involved in making idols. Praveen Chitragar’s family is one among them.

Their family has been in the idol making business for more than a century. They even made idols for the royal family of Mysore and it was the royal family which gave them the title ‘Chitragar’. The family makes around 200 Ganesha idols of clay with a height of one-and-a-half to two-hand-a-half feet. They start their work two months before the festival.

Women are also not left behind and work with men to make the idols. They are specialised in colouring the idols which is a challenging task as clay idols do not hold paint easily. The women also affix stones on the ornaments of the idol and concentrate on beautifying it.

We were bequeathed with the talent of making Ganesha idols from our ancestors. Though we are into other professions after the festival is over, the two months before the festival are hectic. Making clay idol is tougher as we need expertise in joining the moulded parts. They are heavier also. I along with my two sisters ensure that every idol is perfect and charming,” said Shreya Chitragar. In addition to this, there are other artists who are trying to reduce the weight of clay idols by stuffing it with dry grass.

People of all religions come together to help install the idol and decorate it and participate in the celebrations. Over the years, various communities coming together to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi can be seen as Tilak’s dream being realised — that of galvanising the society.
