Food Safety: everyone’s business

By Mandar Kolhapure

Happy World Food Safety Day to all. Yes, The United Nations and World Health Organization have decided to observe World Food Safety Day on 7th June every year, starting from 2019. Access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food is key to sustaining life and promoting good health.  Food borne diseases impede socioeconomic development by straining health care systems and harming national economies, tourism and trade.  With an estimated 600 million cases of food borne diseases annually – almost 1 in 10 people in the world fall ill after eating contaminated – food safety is an increasing threat to human health.  Children under 5 years of age carry 40% of the food borne disease burden with 125000 deaths every year. The theme for this year is “Food safety, everyone’s business”.

The food industry in Belagavi is growing at a rapid rate. In fact it is said that Belagavi is the second city in the state after Bangaluru where the food industry is growing at such a faster phase. As per the theme set for this year, it is everyone’s duty to ensure safe food right from the farms to the dinner table. Equal role has to be played by the government, the producers and the consumers.

What Belagavi desperately needs at the moment is a dedicated Food Quality and Hygiene Inspection department by the City Corporation, especially for the street food sector. Goa has banned the use of steel plates by street food vendors due to improper washing and contamination of water and surroundings during washing. Steel plates have been replaced by use and throw paper plates. Ahmedabad has banned the vendors from keeping any lose water for drinking. The customers can purchase 200ml water pouches for a nominal amount from the vendors. Such good policies can be adopted from different cities by the CCB. Regular food quality and hygiene inspections have to be carried out by the body.

Coming to the producers; the restaurants, hotels, canteens and street food vendors should ensure use of quality ingredients while preparing the food, maintain hygiene at the premises especially in the stores and in the kitchen areas and most importantly serve good quality potable drinking water to consumers. The water used for preparing food is very important and good quality water should be used.

Finally we as consumers have equal share of responsibility. Do not eat at places which are very near to dustbins or garbage areas. In fact many outlets in Belagavi are set right on top of the gutters. If you see any unhygienic practice being followed by the outlet, bring it to his notice immediately. For example, we observed a street food vendor disposing the used plates in a plastic tub right under the tap and people were washing hands in the same tub. We asked him to keep a separate tub for used plates and he followed it immediately.

World Food Safety Day is a very good initiative by the WHO and the UN. By ensuring food safety many food borne diseases can be prevented. As the tagline of this year’s celebration says “Food Safety, everyone’s business” let us all promote food safety, be it the food that we cook or the food that we eat.

Praveen Chatur of Belagavi alleged biker in Kalburgi case, is witness in Gauri Lankesh murder

K.V. Aditya Bharadwaj has written a special story in The Hindu, about Praveen Chatur of Belagavi who has been arrested by the police.

He was arrested earlier this year for a petrol bomb attack on theatre screening Padmavat in Belagavi

Praveen Chatur, listed as a witness in the Gauri Lankesh murder case, is now allegedly the biker who ferried the killer to scholar M.M. Kalburgi’s residence on a fateful day. The 27-year-old resident of Belagavi was arrested by SIT recently.

Chatur was arrested earlier this year for his role in a petrol bomb attack on Prakash theatre screening Padmavat in Belagavi on 25 January 2018.

The interrogation of Amol Kale, the alleged kingpin of the gang that killed four rationalists and writers including Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh, gave the SIT sleuths a key lead on the identity of the biker, pointing them towards Chatur. This was later confirmed by his close resemblance to eyewitness accounts.

Match with sketch

A sketch prepared by inputs from an eyewitness resembles Chatur and the witness was positive about the identity,” a senior official said. Though earlier Amit Baddi from Hubballi, a friend of the alleged shooter Ganesh Myskin, was suspected to be the biker, he did not resemble eyewitness descriptions. This pushed the SIT to reprobe the issue.

Chatur’s name first came up during the interrogation of Sharad Kalaskar, who was based out of Belagavi from 2015-17, and Bharat Kurne, a resident of Belagavi. He along with three others were questioned and since there was no direct role in the murder of Gauri Lankesh, he was made a witness,” explained a senior official.

In his statement, Chatur recounted how he was recruited into the “unnamed gang” and attended at least two training camps in Jalna, Maharashtra, and Mangaluru. He also spoke of a conspiracy hatched by Kalaskar and Kale to attack theatres screening Padmavat.

Chatur was a regular at the meetings of Maharashtra-based right-wing organisation Shiv Pratishthan Hindustan and was taken into the gang by Manohar Edave, a recruiter, SIT sleuths said. The Mangaluru training camp was held a few weeks before the murder of Kalburgi and he was given arms’ training, a probe has now revealed.

Attack on theatre

A bike-borne duo hurled two petrol bombs into the compound of Prakash Theatre in Belagavi, screening Padmavat on the night of January 25, 2018. No one was injured. The Belagavi city police had arrested three persons in the case.

However, statements by Kalaskar, who confessed to his role in the attack, and Chatur had brought forth new information, which prompted the Belagavi city police to reinvestigate. The probe revealed that contrary to his claims, Chatur played a key role in the theatre attack case and was arrested along with six others in January 2019.

Sudhanva Gondhalekar, Kalaskar and Kurne (key accused in the Gauri Lankesh case), besides Sunil Maruti Patil, Raman Achrekar and Parashuram Kakatkar (all recruited into the gang) were the other arrested.

This was the second instance where a person linked to the “gang” was treated as a witness by SIT and later turned out to be a key accused in the murders. SIT had recorded the statement of H.L. Suresh, a teacher in whose house Kale and his associates stayed before the murder of Gauri Lankesh, as a witness only to later realize that Suresh was a key member of the gang and allegedly destroyed evidence.

Power line between Karnataka and Goa will require 177 hectares of forest land in Western Ghats

A new 400 kV transmission line is planned which will power Goa with an additional source from Chhattisgarh by the Goa-Tamnar Transmission Project Ltd (GTTPL).

Part of the lines will pass through Karnataka, wiping out 177 hectares of forest land in the Western Ghats.

The centre is yet to clear this project.

According to documents obtained from the Centre, the project was first mooted during 2017 when the Central Electricity Authority under the Ministry of Power made a request for executing ‘Additional 400kV feed to Goa’. The transmission line starts from Narendra village in Dharwad by tapping the existing 400kV Narendra line of Power Grid Corporation of India and terminates at 400/200 kV substation at Xeldom in Goa.

The transmission line will pass through Dharwad, Belgaum and Uttara Kannada and South Goa district of Goa, reports the Deccan Herald.

Wildlife activist Giridhar Kulkarni said the foremost option for such linear intrusion project is to avoid important wildlife habitats as these intrusions have a range of immediate and long-term negative impacts, both ecologically and socially.

Activists said already this region has lost its virgin forest due to the expansion of the National Highway-4A and many other projects. “There should be a balance between development and conservation. If we are losing wildlife habitats, then attempts should be made to compensate it,” he urged, reports the New Indian Express.

Niranjan Karagi’s Nirnal world’s cheapest portable water filter

Sometimes, the inspiration for the most brilliant of inventions can come from the most humbling of places. Such is the case for NirNal founder Niranjan Karagi while he was playing in a schoolyard nearby his home has invented and patented the world’s cheapest water filter which costs Rs.30 and can be used for 100 times and fits any water bottle and this removes 99% of bacteria and other disease-causing water contaminants.

AAB is proud that we were the first ones to cover his project in December 2016, An Engineer Filters the Way to Success.

Niranjan now has many accolades to his name including Best Entrepreneur Award by Deshpande Foundation – Feb 2017, Best Entrepreneur Award by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) – Jan 2017, Yuva Shilpi Award by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

It is a compatible, portable, reusable, healthy and an eco-friendly water purifier. A product that ensures ‘Safe Drinking water ’ at an affordable price. This acts as a filter when the water oozes out of Nirnal fixed to the bottles. It is easy to use, imparts taste and also adds some essential minerals to the water. It uses activated charcoal, Filter cloth.

Niranjan Karagi’s Nirnal world's cheapest portable water filter
Niranjan did his schooling from St. Mary’s school Belagavi and PUC from Govindram Seksaria Science College, Belagavi. Later completed Mechanical engineering from Angadi Institute of Technology and Management in Belagavi.

During his free time, he noticed some small children using the playground and filling up their plastic water bottles from a potentially unsafe tap. Bearing witness to the scene, Niranjan reflected sadly on this reality and felt that all children should have clean water despite their income or area of residence. It was certainly not a surprise for the young leader to think of such social issues, given his involvement in the LEAD program at AITM College Belagavi. But it was this particular case that leads him to create something that would make a significant social impact for many people.

Water filtration became the main theme for Niranjan as he began to brainstorm ideas on providing a clean, low-cost source of water. Seeing as his research revealed the relatively high prices charged by competitors for filters, the future entrepreneur settled on creating a water filter that was both very affordable and portable for bottles. His first prototype used materials that were easily accessible around the house but after some assistance from LEAD, a second prototype was created that took Niranjan 4 painstaking months to perfect. The result was a small filter that could be fitted into any standard plastic bottle with an incredibly low cost of 20 rupees.

Niranjan Karagi’s Nirnal world's cheapest portable water filter

At that point, all the hard work put into the prototype paid off. Approval was given by the Food Divisional Officer stating that the filter could purify up to 100 liters of water. Furthermore, Niranjan turned to social entrepreneurship as a means of spreading his technology by agreeing to receive tier-ii incubation support in Belagavi by the Sandbox-IMER center. Sandbox Startups was instrumental to the founding of the NirNal enterprise, officially registered with the Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in Belagavi. Furthermore, the incubation center gave him a platform to pursue his ideas for his product while gaining business knowledge about scalability and validity for the purposes of society. Complete with networking events, partnership opportunities, mentoring, and investor meetings, Sandbox Startups was an essential springboard to Niranjan’s growth as a social entrepreneur.

The social impact of his product has been significant. With the distribution of his product to various villages, schools, and even India’s military, it is evident that NirNal has been widely acclaimed for its ingenious and inexpensive technology. But on a personal level, Niranjan is happy with the fact that children could use his filter, knowing that they would always have a reliable source of water as they grow up. Niranjan’s initial wish to provide clean water to everyone has become more and more of a reality through the means of his portable water filter. This reality was made possible for thousands of people as 12,000 units of his filter have already been sold.

Indeed, it is exciting to see how NirNal will scale with its water filters. Niranjan himself has stated that he would like to improve the unit even further while maintaining a low price, all while maintaining his goal of providing clean water to all rural people. If he were to truly succeed in his endeavors, there would be much cause for celebration for this ingenious invention.

Think Big”, yes the Belagavi based Rani Chennamma University (RCU) believes this and has awarded a B Com student 101 marks out of 100.

The New Indian Express in its story mentions, a sixth semester BCom student from K A Lokapur College in Athani, has scored 101 marks in Modern Auditing and Practices. Rani Chennamma University (RCU) not only gave the student 101  marks after final evaluation but also uploaded the student’s marks card online.

Shailashree Sanvaganva was shocked to see she had scored 101 marks in the subject. She had scored 70% overall in the sixth-semester exams.

RCU officials quickly took down her marks card but did not post her real marks. Even after repeated attempts to download the fresh marks card, Shailashree was unsuccessful.

IMA Jewels fraud: many from Belagavi as well

Many people from Belagavi today gathered at the Ajuman hall and later gave a memorandum to the Police Commissioner regarding the money invested in the I Monetary Advisory (IMA) Jewels in Shivajinagar, Bengaluru.

Most of the investors are from the middle-income group and have invested lakhs of rupees in the company that had promised them a higher rate of interest. The investment ranges from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3lakh.

I Monetary Advisory (IMA), a company founded in 2006 by Mohammed Mansoor Khan. Until 2015, few people had heard of it. Khan, a Gulf-returned Bengalurean, tapped the so-called Islamic investment market to the hilt and quickly built a diversified business.

Khan targeted Muslims who shy away from investing in interest-based businesses. The company’s tagline was catchy: Your partner to (the) path of prosperity. Investors were called “sleeping partners”.

IMA offered a bouquet of attractive investment schemes with monthly, quarterly and yearly returns. The amount to be invested was Rs 50,000 and its multiples. Withdrawing from the scheme was touted to be hassle-free: get your money back after 45 days.

Seven directors of the city-based IMA Jewels were arrested and are being grilled by the Special Investigation Team to know their alleged role in the multi-crore ponzi scam operated by its owner Mohammed Mansoor Khan, police said on Thursday in Bengaluru.

Now a day’s many associations, organizations, NGOs and other charities around the world are helping poor students to complete their education and achieve success in life in many ways but Shantai Vidhya Adahar’s “Raddi to Buddhi” (education of needy students from the sale of old newspapers, books ) it is of unique kind of social work and it is no exaggeration to say that it is the perfect social service, said Shri Rajesh Patnekar, Speaker, Goa Legislative Assembly. As the world is becoming more competitive and technological advanced, higher education is becoming more and more expensive and it is very difficult for poor children to get into higher education. But the government has introduced a number of programs for such students and also many such organizations like Shantai are helping them to keep their dreams alive and achieve something great in life.

So poor children should not stay away from education and should not think of leaving the education in between, because to achieve success there is no alternative to education, He told. He praised all the office bearers of Shantai and all the donors for their social service.

Shuttle bus service to Airport a must

With the introduction of the Flight to Mumbai and an additional flight to Bengaluru from June 20, the total number of flights from Belagavi will reach to 8 flights a day to 5 destinations namely Bengaluru (4), Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Pune.

Now the AAI and the NWKRTC must think of starting shuttle bus services to Airport from the city.

In 2017 the NWKRTC had commenced such a service in 2017 but had to shut operations with no takers and also reduced flights. Then it was Peeranwadi to Sambra Airport via Udyambag, Railway Station, Rani Chennama Circle and it made 8 trips in a day and the timings were matched according to the arrival and departure of the flights.

flybus-belgaum-airport-1
Now with 6 flights a day, the NWKRTC must think to deploy buses may be new AC Buses on this Airport Shuttle route which will also help in increasing the travelers as most of them have issues to reach the Airport as only a private taxi is the only source.

In order to increase competition and bring down transport prices, Airports Authority of India is likely to operationalize a rent-a-cab counter at Goa International Airport next month. Belagavi airport must also provide such facilities. The moves are part of an effort by AAI to provide air passengers with cheaper and multiple options for transport once they exit the airport.

It would be very beneficial for the travelers if they can get cheaper options to reach the airport as of now it would roughly cost Rs.500+ for a taxi for a drop to the airport.

There is another line of thought which says when the travelers spent so much to travel by Air why can’t he or shell out for a taxi or an Auto. But when you want the aam Nagrik to fly arrangements for him are important.

We do have the OLA service but it is very limited and as there are bus services in Bengaluru, we should also have one which will help more Aam Nagrik to take their UDAN.

Citizens forum to raise issue of early implementation of Belagavi-Kittur Rail Line

An open Meet for implementation of ‘Kitturu-Kalyana Karnataka Railway’ project was held at Rajaguru Samsthana – Kalmath, Kittur, Dist: Belagavi on Sunday. It has been a long pending demand of Belagavi-Bailhongal-Kitturu-Dharwad Railway line.

With all the 3 Member of Parliament from BJP, it should be easy for them to stress on this railway line which will help to reduce the travel distance to Bengaluru. The team also discussed BELAGAVI-Bagalkot- Raichur railway line demand.

With the MOS Railways been Mr. Suresh Angadi the team feels that pressing this point now makes a lot of sense as he can convince the center for the new line which has pending for decades.

Kitturu- Kalyana Karnataka Railway’ project proposal aims to create an efficient railway transit system in North Karnataka connecting the Northwestern & Northeastern districts. The significance of the same for the development of the region was discussed.

Kitturu-Kalyana Karnataka Railumarga Horata Samiti
With Belagavi MP Shri. Suresh Angadi being the new MoS for Railways in the Union Government, hopes are high for immediate sanction of long pending ‘Belagavi-Kittur-Dharwad’ line. Several surveys for the same route have been conducted in the past, but the project is gathering dust due to the lack of political will of the local leaders.

It was collectively decided in the meeting to work together in the coming days to create awareness among the people of the region and simultaneously pressurize the Elected representatives for the implementation of the project. A memorandum will soon be submitted to Shri. Suresh Angadi in this regard.

A committee by name ‘Kitturu-Kalyana Karnataka Railumarga Horata Samiti’ will be formed and registered to carry forward the campaign. A meeting will be held on 23rd June in Belagavi to discuss the same.

All concerned citizens would be welcome to be part of this organization with a clear motto of implementation of this project.
