The water level has dramatically come down in Rakaskop and Hidkal Reservoir. Rakaskop has around 3.05 feet of water while Hidkal has 17.5 feet of water.

Even if there are no rains water in Rakaskop will suffice until June first week and that from Hidkal up to July end.

Shri Suresh Angadi Channabasappa took over as new Minister of State of Railways here today i.e.31st May 2019. Shri V.K.Yadav, Chairman, Railway Board & other Board Members were also present on this occasion.

Suresh Angadi Channabasappa, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka, is elected from Belgaum in 17th Loksabha elections. He has taken the charge as Minister of State of Railways.

He was born to Somawwa and Chanabasappa Angadi and completed his graduation from S.S.S. Samithi College of commerce in Belgaum. Later, he also graduated in Law from the prestigious Raja Lakhamgouda Law College, Belgaum.

A member of Bharatiya Janata Party, he became the vice president of the party’s Belgaum district unit in 1996. He continued in that office till 1999. In 2001 he was nominated as the president of the district unit and continued to hold that post until he was nominated as the party’s candidate for the Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency in 2004. He was re elected to a second term as Member of Parliament in the 2009 General Elections. He was elected for a third consecutive term in 2014.

Special Investigation Team (SIT) officials on Friday arrested another accused in connection with the M M Kalburgi murder case from Belagavi.

The arrested is Praveen Prakash Chatur, a native of Belagavi, and he is suspected to be the biker who drove the two-wheeler to and from Kalburgi’s residence. A court has remanded him in police custody till June 7, the SIT said.

Kalburgi was shot dead on August 30, 2015 at his residence in Dharwad by two assailants who fled in a motorcycle.

A 27-year-old youth arrested earlier this year for an attack on a theatre screening the film Padmaavat in Belagavi in January 2018, and a 27-year-old from Hubli accused in the 2017 murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, have been identified as the two men who killed Kannada scholar M M Kalburgi in August 2015.

Praveen Prakash Chatur alias Masalawala, 27, had been arrested in April by the Belagavi police for the attack on Prakash Theatre.

The SIT identified the second man involved in the killing of Kalburgi, who was shot on the doorstep of his Dharwad home, as Ganesh Miskin.

Chatur’s arrest in the Kalburgi case comes close on the heels of the Karnataka SIT’s arrest on May 28 of Amol Kale, a key accused in the Lankesh case, for involvement in the Kalburgi murder. Chatur is the first of five persons arrested in the Kalburgi case who are not directly involved in the Lankesh murder.

It was the Bhagya (fate) of the Belagavi Central bus stand, the work for the modernization commenced on January 28, 2017 at last after planning since 2009 and was to be completed in 24 months.

But when the site was reviewed at most 60-65% of the work seems to have been completed.

As per the schedule, it should have been ready by Jan 2019, but now it has been 5 months after it still not completed and looks like it may take another 6-9 months for completion.

Foundation stone laid for Modern Bus station at Belagavi was laid on December 3, 2016, and work began a year later in 2017.

In February 2009 a similar Request for proposal was first floated to be built on PPP model but with no bids were received in that format.
In 2010 again similar tender was floated to be built on Lease-cum-Development Format Design-Build-Operate-Transfer (DBOT) basis.
But there were no takers for this plan and even after the RFP/ Tenders were open for two occasions no one actually bid for it.

Plan:

The project site (CBT and divisional Workshop) the current bus stand itself. The existing Belgaum Central Bus Station of NWKRTC is located in the heart of Belgaum city on an area of 3.08 acres. The adjacent NWKRTC Divisional Workshop is located on 4.68 acres.

The new bus stand will have 41 bus bays, bus circulation and parking areas, auto-rickshaw lane, taxi parking lane, basement parking for private vehicles, passenger entry/ exit, Terminal building consisting of passenger circulation and waiting areas, ticket/ reservation counters, cloak room, first-aid room, waiting rooms, passenger amenities like drinking water, toilets, yatri nivas etc., restaurant, shops, kiosks and administrative offices, crew restrooms, parcel office and other facilities.

One person was arrested by the Udyambag police, who used to fraudulently sell the cars to a third party when he used to take it from the owners saying he will put them on hire.

Shivkumar Malkannavar from Ramtirth nagar has been arrested as he used to take cars from people saying he has good contacts with companies and he will put the cars on hire and in return they will good money.

But the accused used to sell the same cars fraudulently to a third party.

The police have recovered 9 cars worth 49,50,000.
One more of his aide Sanjay Kulkarni is absconding and the police said they will trap in some time.

The Central Zoo Authority has given permission to the Kittur Rani Chennamma Nisargadhama at Bhutramanhatti to keep Lion, Tiger, Bear, Leopard, Fox, Gaur along with other few animals and birds.

At present the Zoo falls in ‘Mini Zoo’ Category as per the classification of Zoos by the Central Zoo Authority.

Belagavi city corporation will spend about 2 crores on building an 8 feet wide gutter and 8 feet tall boundary wall along 1.8 kms around the mini zoo.

The process will require around 2 years to be completed and Lions from the Gir forest are likely to be shifted once all the preparations are completed.

The forest department had sought permission to keep these animals and the Central Zoo Authority has given its nod.

Now it is upto the Forest department to fulfill all the requirements and only after which animals will be shifted under the guidance of the Central Zoo Authority.

The Mini zoo is spread over 34 hectares the mini Zoo was started in 1989.

The Mini Zoo is open from 10.30 am to 5 pm with an entry fee. Wednesday Holiday.

With the zoos being the best places to impart values on biodiversity and motivate visitors for its conservation, they can as well sensitise visitors on endangered species, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, and many other issues.

Visually impaired by birth Sashikala and Rahul are the best of buddies who venture out together to make a living by selling Agarbatti, Phenyle.

Both have completed their PUC II and currently stay in a rented home in Ganeshpur.

Rahul is originally from Nanded and Sashikala is from Raichur.

Both are not tired of selling the Agarbatti, Phenyle they hold in stock. They greet each one with a huge big smile and ask if they want to buy.

Most of them say ‘No’, but they are not disheartened. They move ahead to the next shop or home and try to sell. They speak fluent Kannada and know the products they are selling very well.

They stay in a rented home in Ganeshpur Belagavi where they have to pay 3500 as rent and they somehow manage to earn around 4000 by selling the goods and living hand to mouth.

Both met each other in Delhi 8 months back, they said smiling.

What’s the point of education, if people don’t respect us? says Rahul. We want to earn a decent living on our own.

They plan to marry but a shortage of funds is making them worry.

But Sashikala said, we are blind, but we are able to do our day to work on our own. We are sort of independent but if we get some support we can live a decorous life.

The water level in the Rakaskop reservoir has reached dead storage and hence the 24 x 7 water supply to the 10 wards in the city has been stopped and now they will get water once in 3-4 days. While other parts of the city are getting water once in 6-7 days.

In 2014 as well the 24 x 7 water supply was stopped due shortage of water.

Special arrangements have been done by the water supply board to get water from the dead storage. New pumps have been installed to fetch the water.

Laxmi Hebbalkar, MLA, Belagavi Rural has warned of a protest against the State government if it does not cancel work on a sewage treatment plant in Halaga village in two days.

The Govt under police protection had acquired the fertile land and has already commenced work on the site.

Speaking to presspersons she said I am setting this deadline for the State government to reconsider its decision. If it goes ahead with the project, I will take to the streets along with the affected farmers. The STP should be set up on barren land and not on fertile land.

The government should follow the model of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerji and return the land to farmers. Otherwise, it should at least increase the compensation, she further added.

She alleged that the government had released Rs. 13 lakh per acre for non-fertile land acquired in 2008 but fixed only Rs. 3 lakh per acre for the Halaga lands acquired in 2009.

An STP for Belagavi has been pending for over three decades. The district administration acquired 19 acres of land in Halaga for the STP in 2009-2010. The land has been transferred to the Belagavi city corporation.

Revenue officials say farmers losing land have received Rs. 3 lakh per acre as compensation. Some farmers who had approached the court against the land acquisition have not succeeded.

Villagers of Halaga who have lost their land for the sewage treatment plant gathered and protested at the DC office and demanded that the work be stopped immediately.

Women protesters at the DC office had brought bottles of poison with them and threatened to kill themselves if the work was not stopped.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. SV Bommanhalli met with the protesters and said the STP plant will have to built there but we will try and give you more compensation and also jobs.

But the villagers continued their protest as their only demand was to stop the work and get back their fertile land.

19 acres and 20 gunthas of land of Halaga has been acquired for the STP. Earlier to this, villagers of Halaga have spared their land for Suvarna Vidhan Soudha, Highway and also the Halga Macche Bypass.

Villagers say when we have already given land earlier why is that again they want land here itself. Many villagers said what is the point of setting up a sewage treatment plant on fertile land when there is abundant non fertile land available.

The Vaccine depot which has a long history to it came into the limelight when there were rumors that it will be a good site for building the Suvarna Vidhan Soudha in August 2007. Environmentalists and nature lovers came together and raised the voice that the rich heritage and the flora and fauna should be saved and preserved.

The government also headed to the demand in late 2008 and it was decided by BUDA (Belagavi Urban Development Authority) that a Heritage park needs to be set up in these 100 acres Vaccine depot without cutting or demolishing many buildings housed in it. In fact, even a foundation stone was laid. In 2009 Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Limited made a report on the same and viability of a heritage park and this story is made from that report.

Now the same Heritage park has been proposed to be developed under the Smart city project. The same project made in 2009 has been embodied in this smart city plan. Nothing under the Smart city plan has commenced hence we are still unclear when the actual work on the same would commence.

The Heritage projects within the ABD area under the SMART city component includes. The extent of Heritage Park is 156 acres.
Already Tenders for Phase 1 and Phase 2 have been floated and now under Phase 3 the tender for construction of the Grameen Bharat Sculpture Court has been floated for Rs.1,91,92,000.

In 2012 on similar lines of the Siddhagiri Gramjivan Museum (Kaneri Math) at Kaneri near Kolhapur, a Grameen Bharat Sculpture Court was planned by MLA Abhay Patil then. Then work had commenced in 2012 and around 20 sculptures were ready and it was to be completed in 2013. But BUDA who was looking after this did not focus on the project and it never picked up from there.

Now the same plan has been reviewed under the Smart city project and it will have the following in the Grameen Bharat Sculpture Court –

There will be a huge entrance gate.
