A Chasing Matrix Fountain at Hanuman Nagar Circle (TV Center Garden) in Belagavi has been planned. This is the second call for the same tender as no one bid for the first one in August 2015.

The estimated cost is Rs.29,91,701.93 for each fountain and installation. The fountain will need 3 Months time for completion, hence hopefully it should be ready by 2016.

So this fountain is pending since August 2015 and we hope this would get a bidder this time and we could see a first circle with a Matrix fountain.

First the plan was to have two such fountains but now it is limited to Hanuman Nagar only, the Shri Nagar plan has been dropped.

History of Electricity in Belagavi

The history of Electricity in Belagavi takes us back to the year 1933, when Amalgamated Electricity Company Ltd was incorporated at Mumbai was formed to generate and distribute electricity in the Municipal areas of Ajmer, Belgaum(now Belagavi), Malegaon and other adjoining areas. The company started its Generation and distribution of electricity in the year 1933 under the license of Shri D.B. Ankale with only two Generators at its Generating station opposite to the Belagavi Railway Station, the present HESCOM office premises. The number of generators were increased from 2 to 9 with a total capacity of 3000 KVA in 1966. The electricity was distributed in the area covering city, Camp, Tilakwadi and Vadagoan.

belgaum-electricIn the year 1966 (05/03/1966) the 110KV Nehrunagar Station was commissioned which was fed from 220KV SRS Hubli through 110KV Single Circuit Line. With a Installed capacity of 20MVA. Consequent to the commissioning of 110KV Nehrunagar Station the generators were dismantled and the electricity supplied from 110KV Nehrunagar Station was distributed to the consumers. In the year 1969 the 220KV Receiving station Belgaum was commissioned as switching station with main objective to extend bulk power supply to M/s.Indal,220KV EHT Consumer.

Meanwhile, on 18.12.1974, pursuant to the Karnataka Electricity Undertaking (Acquisition) Act, 1974, the Amalgamated Electricity Company Ltd., was taken over by the Karnataka Electricity Board (formed in 1957) whereby all the assets and liabilities of the Amalagamated Electricity Company Ltd. vested with the Karnataka Electricity Board.

The bill preserved by Umesh Kakkeri from 1937

During 1979 220KV Belgaum-Kolhapur inter-state line was constructed from 220KV Belgaum station. Subsequently from 1982 to 1984, 2 Nos of 50MVA 220KV/110KV Power Transformers are installed and 3 Nos of 110KV feeder bays were constructed to feed power supply to 110KV Belgaum city,110KV Ghataprabha & 110KV Hukkeri. During 1992 the station Transformer capacity was augmented by providing additional 100MVA Power Transformer. Again, during 1998 station capacity was increased by replacing 50MVA Power Transformer No-2 by new 100MVA Power Transformer increasing the station capacity to 250 MVA. KPTCL was formed on 1-8-1999 by carving out the Transmission and Distribution functions of the erstwhile Karnataka Electricity Board.

In the year 2001 TATA power started its 80MW Diesel Generating plant near Kanabargi feeding to 220KV Station Belgaum through 110KV Double Circuit.

Government vide order No. 69 BSR 2001 Bangalore, dated 15/02/2002 has unbundled KPTCL and formed four distribution companies. Consequent to this the function of distribution of power has been totally separated from KPTCL. KPTCL is now vested with the responsibility of transmitting power all over the State and construction and maintenance of Stations and lines of 66KV and above.

The four newly formed independent distribution companies, which were registered on 30/04/2002, are Bangalore Electricity Supply Company, Mangalore Electricity Supply Company, Hubli Electricity Supply Company and Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company. They have started functioning w.e.f.. 01/06/2002. The Hubli Electricity Supply Company company was incharge of distribution of power in Belgaum.

In the year 2003 the 50MVA Power transformer failed which reduced the capacity of the 220KV Belgaum Station to 200MVA .

During 2005 4 Nos of 110KV line bays constructed to reduce over loading of 110KV Ghataprabha, Nehru-nagar lines & for proper evacuation 80MW TATA Power generation. During the year 1998 total 110KV feeder peak load on 220KV Station was about 162MW and Consequent to the commissioning of New 220KV Station at Chikodi(1998) 55MW load of Chikodi and hukkeri shifted on 220KV Station Chikodi and with gradual growth of load the load on 220KV Station Belgaum again reached 160MW during the year 2010. In the year 2010 220KV Ghataprabha Station commissioned and around 45MW of load shifted on New 220Kv Ghataprabha Station load on Belgaum 220KV Station got reduced to a peak demand of 120MW. As per the records there is a considerable increase in load growth of 10MW to 12MW per year. Till the end of Aug-2015 it has reached around 150MW.

In a shocking incident, a 18 year old Diploma student of Maratha Mandal Polytechnic allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze and jumping in front of a moving train.

The incident occurred near First Railway gate and the deceased has been identified as Sanjana Angolkar.

She was identified with the bag which was lying next to her and it also contained a letter which stated that she was committing suicide as she was fed up of her illness. She was ill from the past 4-5 years and this took her into depression and she took this harsh decision, the police said.

The letter starts with,

God Forgive me for my wrong doings and I am committing suicide because of my health problems and no one should be held responsible for my death.

Th girl goes on to write and ask her parents to adopt a baby girl and dont worry your Sanjana has not gone anywhere she is near you only.

On Friday she had been to her college as regular on Friday morning and was very normal with her friends, said her college mates. She boarded the college bus after classes and left for home. Sanjana stepped out of the bus at Tilakwadi saying she had some work and would meet her friends later. She had all planned it well in advance, as police fear she had the petrol in a bottle which she used to set herself a blaze.

Water logging in Maratha Colony will prevented with these measures

Last July, there was a sudden water logging in Maratha Colony, SV colony, Cariappa Colony, Nanawadi, Shivaji Colony, Shastri Nagar, which was very sudden in the wee hours of the morning where in no one was able to take out their belongings.

Then Executive Engineer South Laxmi Nippanikar and others worked hard to find out the crux of the water and it was a pond near the Desai farms.

congress-road-waterThen the storm water drains werent cleaned and one major area where the civic authorities had failed was cleaning up the drain which goes underneath the Railway over bridge.

The same this time is being cleaned and the debris is being removed after seeking permission from the Railways and Cantonment officials.

The Storm water drain from Maj Ramaswamy avenue which goes under the RoB is been cleaned and desilted and the debris will be lifted from there for the first time.

Speaking to AAB, Corporation Commissioner Sashidhar Kurer said,

we are not taking any chances this time and hence 2-3 months ahead of the monsoons we plan to create a water way which due to which there will no water logging as it happened last year. We sought permission from the Railways and the Cantonment and we have now cleaned the drain which leads the water to the outlet below the bridge. We have also built the storm water drain in Shivaji Garden last year which was also a part of this project.

In June again we will try and remove the silt if any from the above drains which will ensure free flow of water and no water logging.

Kore Galli kids make a cricket ground with grass for themselves

The Mahatma Phule Road Belagavi has new lush green mini ground for cricket with a pitch made by the children and elders of Kore Galli Shahpur on what a barren piece of land and now it will host cricket tournament in the night from March 3.

With no ground for the children to play in Kore Galli, they had identified a open private land, which wore a deserted look since several years. Initially they cleaned the bushes and started playing cricket on that land. However as the members of their group increased, so did their interest in playing cricket. But the land on which they were playing was not properly leveled and so created problems while playing.

mini-stadium kore galliUnder the guidance of a few elders the kids decided to level the ground and make it fit for playing cricket. The land owner also decided to hand over the land to the kids as he had no immediate plans for any development there.

The 12 guntas land now had marked boundaries, and all the children and youth contributed money for raising fund for establishing a proper cricket pitch under the banner of Kore Galli Sports Club (KGSC), Belagavi. A The members approached several nurseries to purchase required species of grass and planted them on the ground.

After two months of efforts now the barren land looks like a ground on which one would love to play, each day it is watered and road rollers used to roll the pitch.

Yuvaraj Havalanache, one of the members of KGSC group informed that about Rs 40,000 was utilised for establishing the cricket ground. He said that every member of the group has his efforts in giving birth to it. He said for the same, 32 teams from various parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa are expected to participate.

Appugol aide held for trying to sell property, customers shocked

The Deccan Chronicle has made this story –

Belagavi police have identified more than 100 properties which film producer Anand Appugol managed to buy, before cheating customers of his Sangolli Rayanna Cooperative Bank to the tune of Rs 250 crore.

In spite of police department’s directives against selling any of his properties, until the bank returned all the deposited customers’ money, it has come to light that Appugol’s associates are trying to sell some of properties secretly.

sangoli-appugolBesides arresting a close associate of Appugol, Sanjay Patil, the police are interrogating Sub-Registrar of Belagavi Suresh Handigund and another Dr Rao in connection with the attempts to sell five of Appugol’s properties illegally.

On identifying properties of Appugol located at various places in the state, measures were taken by the police to ensure that none of them were sold until depositors got their money back.

According to sources, Appugol had invested crores in buying five properties in Patil’s name in Belagavi city. More people involved in this property deal are expected to be arrested shortly. Sub-Registrar Handigund also landed in trouble for initiating these deals and admitted to police that he wanted to take up registration of the properties under pressure from lawyers.

Police have asked him to give his statements in writing. When Appugol’s came up for hearing recently in a local court, Belagavi police already informed the court on properties owned by Appugol and measures taken to prevent their sale.

Local police had earlier issued a notice to Sanjay Patil ordering him to report to the investigating officers. However, Patil did not respond and continued his effort to sell properties to one Dr Rao, a resident of Belagavi.

The attempts to sell Appugol’s properties have come as a shock to thousands of bank customers, who are waiting desperately to get their deposits back.

Even as the deposited amount is more than Rs 250 crore, sources estimated the total value of assets owned by Appugol was not more than Rs 80 to 100 crore. After beingin jail for several weeks, Appugol managed to get bail in Dharwad High Court Bench three months ago.

Dance, DJ or live performance at restaurants need permission ?

Any kind of music and dance venues, whether they play live, recorded or DJ music, have to obtain a licence from the Commissioner of Police, was told by CoP Benagaluru recently after Supreme Court ordered that restaurants in Bengaluru in Karnataka offering musical performances by live bands, cabarets and discotheques have to obtain a licence from the police.

We assume the same law is also applicable to Belagavi as well. The Raid on Hide out, Kirloskar road on Saturday night was as liquor was been sold on the floor not approved in the layout for the sale of liquor and yes there was loud music being played.

dj
Representational image

Many of the restaurants in the city now have DJ shows, some have live music and as per law then each one will have to get a specific permission from the police.

Venues that host music performances have to apply for yet another licence under the Licensing and Controlling of Places of Public Entertainment (Bangalore City) Order 2005.

The Karnataka Live Band Restaurants Association had challenged the Licensing and Controlling of Places of Public Entertainment (Bangalore City) Order 2005 before the Supreme Court on grounds that it violated their right to equality and interfered with their fundamental right to practise any trade or business.

A Division Bench of Justice RK Agrawal and Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre said that since these performances are carried out in restaurants where the public has access and, therefore, in the larger public interest, “these performances have to be controlled, regulated and supervised”.

Hence after these and the night life culture seeping in other tier 2,3 cities these things may have to be regulated as per law.

The SC bench said that the police order imposes well conceived conditions in the public interest and these conditions ensure the safety and welfare of the general public who regularly visit such restaurants to partake of food and witness live performances by artistes. Indeed, if these safety measures are not adhered to by owners while running their restaurants, the general public will always run a risk of subjecting themselves to any untoward incident endangering their lives and safety.

The restaurants owners see at this – The moral overtones in the judgment and the assumption that live music has a higher potential for indecency or obscenity is archaic. It was not the live band at Kamala Mills that sparked the fire.

Birds and Beans: Study shows coffee production in the Western Ghats, can be a win-win for birds and farmers

A new study shows that coffee production in the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot, can be a win-win for birds and farmers.
It’s an age-old debate for coffee lovers. Which is better: Arabica beans with their sweeter, softer taste, or the bold, deep flavor of Robusta beans? A new study by Wildlife Conservation Society, Princeton University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison appearing in the journal Scientific Reports has taken the question to unlikely coffee aficionados: birds.

According to a WCS press release issued today, the researchers, led by WCS Associate Conservation Scientist Dr.Krithi Karanth, surveyed for bird diversity in coffee agroforests in India’s Western Ghats region. Previous research has demonstrated that shade-grown coffee (typically Arabica) can harbor substantial levels of biodiversity. But coffee production is globally shifting toward Robusta, which uses a more intensive full-sun agricultural system, which may pose deleterious impacts for forest wildlife.

bird-beans

What the researchers have found was surprising: Although Arabica avian assemblages were more species rich, Robusta nevertheless offered substantial biodiversity benefits, and supported higher densities of several sensitive avian populations such as frugivores. In addition, farmers use less pesticides in the more disease-resistant Robusta farmlands.

The authors found a total of 79 forest dependent species living in the coffee plantations they surveyed, including three IUCN Red-Listed species: Alexandrine parakeet (Psittacula eupatria), grey-headed bulbul (Pycnonotus priocephalus) and the Nilgiri wood pigeon (Columba elphinstonii). Plantations can harbor a diversity of mammals, amphibians and tree species, too.

The study has important implications as coffee production is an increasingly important driver of landscape transformation, and shifts between different coffee bean species are a major dimension of agroforestry trends. The authors say that coffee certification efforts should prioritize maintaining native canopy shade trees to ensure that coffee landscapes can continue providing biodiversity benefits.

Dr.Karanth said “coffee farms play a complementary role to protected areas in a countries like India where less than four percent of land is formally protected. Therefore, building partnerships with largely private individual and corporate land holders will provide much needed safe-passage and additional habitats for birds and other species.”

Dr.Karanth co-founded a coffee company, Wild Kaapi, which sources wildlife friendly Indian coffee.

Indian robusta has relatively high “cup scores” (i.e. flavour ratings) by coffee experts, is disease-resistant, and commands a price premium.

Said lead author Charlotte Chang, who analysed the data while a graduate student at Princeton University and is now a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (University of Tennessee, Knoxville): “An encouraging result of the study is that coffee production in the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot, can be a win-win for birds and farmers.”

Funding for this project was provided by US NSF Grant Number 1265223, Oracle, the US NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide with USAID program.

Wildlife Conservation Society India Program, based in Bengaluru, has combined cutting-edge research on tigers and other wildlife, with national capacity building and, effective site-based conservation through constructive collaborations with governmental and non-governmental partners. WCS India Program is committed to saving wildlife and wild lands, nurturing and inspiring positive attitudes towards nature in people through its scientific and conservation endeavors.

Belagavi Fort

Map Location : http://goo.gl/maps/kr8v

Coordinates: 15°51’29″N   74°31’27″E

The Belagavi Fort is located near NWKRTC Bus stand. At the entrance, there are two shrines, Ganapati and Durga. The fort is encircled by a moat. There are two Jinalayas in later Chalukya style. One of them is Kamal Basti. This Jain Temple was built in 1204 AD by Bichirja, a minister of Kartavirya IV of the Ralta Dynasty. The Sanctum Hill has the seated idol of Neminath. The temple has Kadamba Nagara Shikara. The other Jinalaya is almost a ruined one.

It is hard to believe but there were 108 Jain Temples and 101 Shiva Temples in the premises of the present Belgaum Fort, which were demolished and overthrew by the then Muslim kings (Asta Khan (Asad Khan) came from Bengal) and ultimately with the same stone and pillars the Belgaum Fort as built. Even at the present time we find stones belonging to those in thefort

Inside Belagavi Fort

  • A missing FORT CHURCH – called Christ Church was 112 ft long with a pleasing interior, built in 1833. It was located after the PWD offices on the left side as one enters from Durga Devi gate, before Deshpande’s bungalow, there is a teak plantation there now.

  • A small Mosque ( Jamia Masjid) which was earlier a Jain or Shiva temple. The Jamia Masjid, dated 1585-86, was built by Sher Khan. This mosque is just 50 meters away from the ruined Shiva temple. It has still got many of its inner walls with Jain or Shiva scripts and the king was unable to remove all the art work inside the temple as he did for Safa Masjid, which was also earlier a Shiva temple. How to reach: One can reach Rajhunsgad village on the foot of this hill via- Desur village or from Yellur & Sulga and then climb the fort on kutcha road. Experienced riders can reach up to the entrance of the fort on top on Motorcycles but this path (kutcha road) is too steep for motorcycles. However, this is an excellent place for Trekking.

Rajhunsgad is surrounded by greenery of farms and fields with rice as a major crop. Yellurgad (Yellur Fort) located within the vicinity of Belgaum Taluka, on hillock with a breathtaking view. It is situated nearly 2,500 ft (762 m) above sea level. According to sources, this Fort dates back to history many centuries ago among different kingdom and its rulers including the Yadavas, Hoysalas, Bahamani, Adilshahi, Peshwas-Marathas.

The fort on top of hill is visible from almost all areas of Belgaum. It is also believed that there existed a secret tunnel from the Belgaum fort (near Durga Devi Temple) up to Rajhunsgad during the ancient period. In this fort, a beautiful Temple of ‘Lord Shiva’ is situated where most of the people staying in and around the villages of this fort visit and pray every Monday. There is Well of sweet water on top of this hill. It is infact an admirable archeology of the past architects and rulers. An awesome view of Belgaum City can be had from this fort. On interacting with Sri. Siddharth Hiremath (Poojari) of this Shiva temple in the fort told us that, This Fort in spite of having a rich historic relevance is always neglected by administration. The temple’s maintenance cost is mainly borne by the people of surrounding villages of Rajhunsgad, Sulga, and Yellur etc.

How to Reach- Gandhinglaj – Bhadgao – Chenkuppi- Samangad

Samangad Fort (Gadhinglaj) an isolated oval-topped hill three and a half miles south of Gadhinglaj (16° 10′ N; 74° 20′ E), has greatest height of 2,600 feet above the sea and greatest breadth of 260 feet. The hill top is surrounded by an eight feet high wall. Formerly it was well supplied with water from several rock-cut cisterns. For want of repairs for many years, the cisterns are not functioning at present (1957). In 1676, Samangad was thoroughly repaired by Sivaji. Though one of the smallest of Sivaji’s forts, Samangad was one of the strongest. In 1844, injudicious changes introduced by the minister Daji Pandit, by bringing their lands under the mamlatdar, enraged the Samangad garrison or Gadkaris who rebelled and shut the gates of the fort. On the 13th of October, 1844 the fort was taken by British troops under General Delamotte and dismantled. Since the disturbances of 1844 the mamlatdar’s head-quarters have been moved from Samangad to Gadhinglaj. [Details of the 1844 disturbance are given above under History.] The fort is now in a dilapidated condition.

Map Location : http://goo.gl/maps/zWQp

Coordinates: 15°49’1″N   74°2’43″E
How to reach: Belgaum – Shinnoli – Patne Cross – Motanwadi – Pargad

Pargad Fort (Chandgad Taluka), is built on a peaked hill in the Sahyadris about 2,000 feet above sea level. The hill sides are wooded, except in places where they have been laid bare by brushwood clearing or Kumri. The ascent to the fort is steep by rock-cut steps. The fort which is about forty acres in area is mostly out of repair. Part of the walls, which only line the crests of ravines and one gateway are fallen. The water-supply is from six reservoirs four of which are in repair. A temple of Bhavani and two broken pieces of cannon are the only other remains in the fort. In 1827 a committee of inspection described Pargad as an extensive hill fort in the Sahyadris 1,900 feet high, about thirty-one miles from Belaganv and two miles north of the Ram pass. It was formed by the basalitic band of rock which crowns so many of the Sahyadri hills. The perpendicular scrap varied from forty to hundred feet and was inaccessible in every part except at the gateway where the masonry was only fourteen feet high. The fort was overlooked and commanded on several sides, especially on the north where a hill approached as near as 1,200 feet. The water-supply was from numerous wells supplied by springs. A reservoir in the fort also held water till February. A stone-built temple, the commandant’s house, an eight-pounder, and three Jamburas were the only other remains in the fort.
The crest of the hill with a natural scrap all round of thirty to sixty feet formed, without any help from art, a strong and almost impregnable position; for though in many places the scarp had a slight slope it was nowhere sufficiently sloped to admit of an assault. The works crowning the crest of the scarp were strong stone wall twelve to twenty feet high, and according to the form of the hill, flanked in various places with bastions fit for ordnance. At the north angle round which the road led to the gate the rock was particularly high, bold and rugged and was crowned by a double line of works of masonry completely commanding the road to the gate which was placed in the north-west front about 600 feet from the western angle of the hill. The only entrance to the fort was up a flight of steps about fifty yards long on the top of which was a small gate facing south-west and much exposed. The passage up the steps was steep and well flanked by the works. The south-east end of the fort was the weakest point forming a sharp acute angle without any defenses. The fort was inhabited, but water was scarce and had to be brought by the people from a village outside the slope of the hill to the north-west not far from the gate. The committee observed that even without defenses the hill would be regarded as a very strong position, but formed into a fort, with the defences as they then (1842) existed, it should be deemed a fort of great strength. In 1749 Pargad fort was ceded to Sadasiv Rao the cousin of the third Peshva Balaji.

Co-ordinates : 15°34’34″N   74°17’12″E

How to reach: Belgaum – Khanapur – Asoga Road – Gawali

Bhimgad Fort are historical ruins located within the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary, on a detached spur of the Western Ghats, in Khanapur Taluk of Belgaum District near Jamboti Village. It is located in the heart of the Mhadei river watershed. It was built and occupied by Shivagi Maharaj in the mid 17th century during his conquest of South India to defend from the Portuguese colonial troops who controlled Goa at that time.
The fort sits on top of a 300 ft (91 m) rock outcropping at the crest of the escarpment overlooking the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and rising 1,800 ft (550 m) near vertically above the plains to the west. The defenses were almost entirely natural, requiring little additional construction.

Near the end of 1676, Shivaji besieged Belgaum and Vayem Rayim in current day northern Karnataka. From here he launched a wave of conquests in southern India with a massive force of 30,000 cavalry and 20,000 infantry. Bhimgad was one of the forts that Shivaji still held when he died in 1680.

In 1719, the fort was included with the 16 districts given to a grandson of Shivaji, Chattrapati Shahu, at the beginning of his own rule. About 1787, the fort was overtaken by the Nesagari chief but it was soon retaken. In 1820 it was observed by the British and in 1844 it was occupied by them to guard against insurgents who threatened Belgaum.

There is one narrow stone-cut trail leading up to the fort. The ruins are 1,380 ft (420 m) long from north to south and 825 ft (251 m) broad from east to west. The fort has only one gateway and the walls are still mostly intact. The inside is overgrown with brush and there is one fresh-water spring on the west side and a small reservoir in the north, both of which are dry in the two hottest months of the year. The fort had an eight-pound gun and a three-pound gun plus a wall musket. Bhimgad was one of the forts that Shivagi still held when he died in 1680.

Stargazing Nightout at Mhadei Research Center

“The life that breathes me is home to all souls, we are children of stars, galaxies, learning to walk, eternally at home.” – Anonymus

We all have studied about planets, stars, constellations, galaxies, meteors and also about the telescopes, but have rarely experienced them. Probably these opportunities we thought were open only to people who had access to these hardwares due to their profession or due to their academic necessity.

Galileo Astronomy Club of GSS College in association with Makerspace BelgaumGalileo Astronomy Club of GSS College in association with Makerspace Belgaum organized a talk by Harshad Joglekar from Belagavi a couple of months ago, who kind of re-introduced the space objects to non physics people making astronomy a subject of interest, hobby and passion and not necessarily be pursued academically. This ignited the passion and created a necessity to form a group of like minded people who simply got together to view the super blue blood moon and lunar eclipse.

Galileo Astronomy Club of GSS College in association with Makerspace BelgaumThe passion intensified and some good people agreed to help us use their research space and the camping was planned. Like any event this too required lot of planning and experimenting prior to the D -Day and the Galileo Astronomy Club in association with Makerspace Belgaum did it all. All the participants needed to do was to carry things that were listed to ensure our safety and safety of the wild beings by keeping it plastic and litter free and Rahul Khanolkar (our own Batman) ensured this was strictly followed.

A group of students, staff and enthusiasts led by Praveen Patil (A teacher who believes Physics is everything) planned to travel early that evening. Upon arrival various teams got busy with their assigned work like preparing food, installing telescopes, masking the LED lamps/torches with red filter, setting up audio-visual equipment etc.. Unconference style sessions were arranged to share all interesting things about the celestial objects. After the informal introduction of all the activities by praveen sir, Aishwarys a physics student from Goa University took charge and started introducing various constellations. Then Mr. Prakash Shanbagh, (A bussinessman who is passionate about astronomy) took all the participants on an amazing journey of asteriums, constellations, and various interesting deep sky objects. He also nerrated the stories behind the constallations from Greek Mythology. Galileo Astronomy Club is the brainchild of Prof. Shrikrishna Prabhu who was there to encourage all the participants.

Galileo Astronomy Club of GSS College in association with Makerspace Belgaum

Since this was going to be a night out, lightning talks of 5-10 minutes were arranged. Rohit, Vinayak, Abhijeet, Vinut and Rahul shared interesting information covering different topics like black holes, celestial scales, ancient astronomy, Stellarium (a free software helps study and locate celestial objects) etc.. Indian Astronomers (intellectuals like Aryabhatta) and their research which proved that Indians were far ahead and developed in the world of science and technology was also presented.

Followed by this was the whole night sky gazing, watching different constellations, different satellites, waiting for Jupiter, mars and saturn to take their turns to pose with clarity. Amidst the nature, with bare minimum necessities, absolutely electricity free night was not only a connect with nature but making us realize that man never skips over utilizing resources. Probably that was the reason we had to travel about 60+ kilometers to view the sky that was different from our roofs.

Pictures of different wild life studies in the Mhadei Research Center suggest that there are environmental enthusiasts who kind of get frequent chances to connect with nature and they are kind of one with it. After the fun filled night the mornings were even more beautiful. Slowly the sight of beautiful shinning objects got hazy and light took over. The sound of crumpling leaves and stories of wildlife visitors within the camping area kept our eardrums alert with mixed feeling excited yet scary.

Everything was beautiful about this camping, adventurous drive, stay all night with only natural light, cooking on chulah, gazing at tiny objects and they kind of doing a ramp walk and presenting themselves in turns, morning walks, sighting feces of leopard and other wild beings was a life time experience.

The camping helped me realize the truth that “WE are not IN the universe, WE are the universe”

No helmet – no petrol from 21 Feb in Belagavi

Top police officials concerned had a meeting with the petrol pump owners and asked them to implement the ‘no helmet – no petrol’ norm for two-wheeler riders to reduce road accident deaths from 21st February 2018.

Some advocates, writers and activists have raised questions on the legal sanctity of the “No Helmet, No Petrol” rule Hubballi-Dharwad police wants to implement starting February 22.

Is this is in violation of Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution which allows one to practice any legal profession, trade or business.

no helmet no petrolJudgments of the Supreme Court and high courts, which have declared that it’s the duty of traffic police and police authorities to ensure proper enforcement of the helmet rule. Hence, petrol bunks may get stuck in legal clutches if they deny petrol to those not wearing helmet, experts feel.
It will have to be seen how this is taken up in the city from Tomorrow.
