Transplant or Dialysis during permanent kidney failure – Dr Vernekar Ritesh

Kidneys are significant organs that contribute to your overall well-being. But when kidneys function at only below 10 to 15 percent of their normal capacity, they cannot effectively do their job, such as remove waste or excess fluid from your blood.

wkdEnd stage renal disease (ESRD) is the last stage (stage five) of chronic kidney disease (CKD). When kidney diseases develop into ESRD, dialysis or a kidney transplant is necessary to live for permanent kidney failure.

In India ESRD incidence is 150-250 per million population and India needs 2,20,000 donors per year & currently only 7500 transplants are done amongst which 95% are live donor & 5% cadaveric (brain dead donor).

Kidney diseases are on the rise in India thanks to alarming prevalence of diabetes & unawareness in general public.

kidney day belagaviDialysis is done in two ways

CAPD(Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal dialysis)
Hemodialysis, and in India more than 95% of the patients are on hemodialysis.

Transplant can be done from a LIVE donor, and this constitutes 95% of the transplants while the cadaver (Brain Dead) donor these constitute only 5% in India.

  • Deceased (or Cadaveric) Donor: This is a kidney which comes from a person who is brain dead and the family has given permission for the kidneys to be donated for transplant.

  • Living Related Donor: A kidney which comes from a blood relative such as a parent, brother or sister.

The organ allotment is according to waiting list as per Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation, constituted by the Government of Karnataka.

Patients always ask which is better Transplant or Hemodialysis ?

Transplant offers much better quality Life & has better survival rate than hemodialysis also expenses involved in transplant is much less than hemodialysis if we consider the entire life span.

Who can be a live DONOR?

As per HOTA(Human Organ Transplant Act) “anyone can be a donor provided there should be no monitory transaction between the 2 parties ”

LIVE RELATED DONOR-

The state authorization committee which permits transplants gives regional(local) hospital authority to go ahead of transplant in cases of first degree relatives (parents, siblings, children) also wife & grandparents.

Second degree relatives (cousins, half siblings, aunts, uncles, nephew, niece) for this, the transplant permission is with state authority committee and it has been seen that getting a permission in such cases is very difficult and rare these days.

Third degree relatives (far relatives) friends who come forward as donors with emotionally involved with recipient in such cases it’s very very difficult sometimes impossible to convince state authority & permission is generally deprived.

The COST of transplant for live transplant is in the range of 4-8 lakhs depending on the hospitals. In Belagavi the Kidney transplant can be done in the above range.

Donors are usually discharged by day 5, recipient by day 8-10 and both are not kept in an ICU.

First year post transplant the expenses are about 6-10lakhs, Second year 80 thousand to 1 Lakh and Third year 40-50 thousand thereafter 25-30 thousand per year.

The cost involved post transplant is mainly the expenses of anti-rejection medicines & blood tests/scans involved in post transplant care.

Anti-rejection medicines are reduced every 1-2months slowly but a small doses are kept lifelong.

The SUCCESS/SURVIVAL rate in India is at par with the west  1yr survival rate is > 90%, 5yr survival rate > 75%, 10yr rate > 65%

Complications such as rejections & infections, reported early to transplant physician these complications can be reasonably managed if reported in time.

Striving to conserve history- Vinod Doddanavar’s relentless work towards ancient temple restoration

First Published on: Aug 5, 2013

Mr. Vinod Doddanavar son of Late Shri. Komalanna Doddanavar – senior Congress Leader. Educated in the Rashtriya Military School, Belagavi/St.Paul’s School and then KLE for B. Pharm, later at Govt. college of Pharmacy, Bangalore for his M. Pharm. Degree. Vinod is a trained pharmacist and has worked for Astra Zeneca in the R & D dept. along with Dr. Sune Bergstrom, the Nobel Laureate, as well as taught at PESIT.

He has read Jain literature extensively and has a huge collection of rare Jain scriptures, including some from the Bharatiya Dnyanapith. His area of special study is Jain philosophy, Archaeology, Ancient Indian History with special reference to the Rattas, Silahars, Satvahanas, etc. among others. He has initiated the restoration process of various dilapidated Jain temples in Karnataka and is seeking the help of professionals for this. His knowledge about Indian and Karnataka history is exemplary. He is the office bearer of many Jain Organisations ( some of them actively functional in Temple restoration) and works for the same. He is also the Chairman of the Governing Council of Bharatesh Global Business School( MBA), and under his tutelage, the institute has pioneered many innovative practices. )

vinod-doddannavarHe follows music and movies, even the latest ones and is a keen football enthusiast, even played the game at the school and college level.

Vinod spoke to AAB about his career and his future plans:

Tell us something about your growing years?

My early schooling happened in St. Paul’s high school and subsequently from std. 6th in Belagavi Military School. I was lucky to be educated in one of the best schools. The school routine was eventful since the students were kept busy in one or the other activities from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. Special emphasis was laid on building the personality of students with a range of extra- curricular activities and sports. The day began with physical training with a 3-5 km. jog, followed by assembly with prayer, news-reading and speech by students, talk by the principal and followed by classes, self-study in the afternoons with break for games. We had inter-house competitions in debate, poetry, extempore speech, dramatics and sports was a weekly affair. Movies were screened every fortnight. The campus of 100 acres had student strength of 300 and teaching staff of about 30, more than 50 members of support staff. The focus of the students was to qualify for the UPSC and enter the National Defence Academy. The entire school was like a big family. There was a huge dining hall which accommodated the 300 students. I, inspite of being a local, preferred to stay in the boarding. I miss the beautiful cantonment area. I am saddened that the current curriculum is far away from what we did in school.

How did you opt for an education in Pharmacy?

My family was in the business of timber, mining, extraction of essential oils like Eucalyptus, Citriodora ( Nilgiri), Lemongrass, Citronella, etc. These oils were further synthesized into a number of organic chemicals which we used to manufacture perfumes. The process to manufacture these perfumes was highly technical and confidential. Pharmacy and Chemistry are inter-related, hence it was felt that Pharmacy would be the best choice of career.

Joining the School of Pharmacy of the J. N. Medical College opened up a new horizon. The rigid curriculum set my Dr. F. V. Manvi and the staff kept us on our toes. The syllabus being very tough, lead to a large number of failures. Due to strong academic base, at the undergraduate level, the post graduate course was quite easy at the Govt. College of Pharmacy, Bangalore. Before the completion of my PG in Pharmacy, I was selected by Astra IDL ( Astra Xeneca). It was possible because most of the managers in the company were alumni of the Govt. college of Pharmacy and the reference of my guide Mrs. S. P. Thampi helped.
My guide and her husband Dr. P. P. Thampi were highly respected personalities in the field of Pharmacy education. Astra IDL was a subsidiary of Astra Sweden, an MNC. The company has a strong R& D base with numerous discoveries and patents. It has discovered Lignocaine (a local anesthetic), Terbutaline ( Anti-asthmatic), Metaprolol ( an anti-hypertensive), Omeprazol
( Anti -Ulcer ) and many other drugs and drug delivery systems. Dr. Sune Bergstrom, A Nobel Laureate was a regular visitor to the Bangalore plant. I was in the R& D Dept. and a part of the team working with Dr. Bergstrom. Here I was exposed to the stringent quality norms of Astra and USFDA. There was a common saying in Astra that quality has to be built in the product, it can’t be evaluated.

How was the business scene like in Belagavi when you joined your family business?
Our family’s traditional business was Timber and mining of iron ore. The business operations were spread across many places like Gadag, Karwar, Sirsi, etc. It was a routine practice to accompany our father to these places during vacations. My elder brother, who was a role model for many, is a mechanical engineer from NIT Suratkal. He was instrumental in diversifying from our traditional business to manufacture of chemicals. Many reactors and equipment were self-designed and it was probably among the few chemical plants to manufacture Paracetamol from Benzene in a single location. The liberalization of economy with drastic reduction in customs duty, made the process unviable due to cheaper imports and entire efforts of more than 15 years was wiped out. We were very lucky to have diversified into construction, contracts and logistics due to the efforts of Rajeev, my second brother. That was how we could overcome our setbacks in the chemical business.

What made you interested in Jain Philosophy and Jain Archaeology?
Kamal Basti has always kindled my curiosity in Archaelogy. Accompanying my father during his business tours took me to many places of archaeological importance. An article on Kamal Basti of 1924 written by my grandfather was a historical record of the temple. It inspired me to do a little research in finding the Epigraphic records. This lead to two inscriptions on the Kamal Basti in the London Museum. The visit to Belagavi by the Jain Saint Poojya Tarunsagarji Maharaj inspired many young Jains towards Jain philosophy. The philosophy says of worshipping a character and not an individual.

What is the nature of your work on the restoration of Jain temples in Karnataka?
Karnataka is a land of rich history where many important dynasties ruled. Every region of Karnataka has got beautiful carved temples, idols, inscriptions, etc. Many such monuments are lying unattended or are destroyed by the locals. A group of my friends decided to conduct a survey of the ancient temples in Belagavi district only. We happened to see a few temples but were shaken to find many temples in ruins in almost all the talukas of Belagavi.
Some of them were at Halasi (Protected by ASI, reminds one of the Greek Monuments), Degaon
( ASI), Degaloli (A beautiful temple, almost in ruins, just 3 to 4 kms from Kittur), Bailhongal , Inchal, Nesargi, Vakkund (an island in the backwaters of the Malaprabha dam, 5 kms from bailhongal, has ruins of ancient temples). The Dolmens of Kannur, Gokak, which are of pre-historic times, Sankeshwar, Ammangi. Another interesting place to visit is Ibrampur near Chandgad in Maharashtra which has 2 Jain and 2 Hindu temples which are in ruins. They have a unique architecture like that seen at the Khajuraho temples.

Two temples are presently under restoration due to our efforts – A). A 1000 year old Jain temple at Halasi by the dept. of archeology, Govt. of Karnataka and B). A 500 year old Jain temple at Beniwad, Hukkeri taluka by Sri Dharmasthal Manjunath Trust at an estimated cost of more than Rs. 20 lakhs.

The British have very carefully and tirelessly documented our ancient inscriptions and texts. The quantum of historic research has decreased of late. Lots of historic facts are coming out every day like the ancient civilization of the Satavahanas at Old Belagavi ( Vadgaon), finding of pottery, jewelry dating more than 2500 years old presently at KUD, The Halasi remains, the Dolmens at Kannur, Halingalgi near Jamkhandi. The influence of Silaharas, Rattas, Chalukyas, etc. comes to light every day in some or the other forms. There is lots of scope for research enthusiasts.

What are your future plans and what would be your contribution to the field of education?
The present generation students are influenced by the Mobile/ Internet and TVs. This has taken them away from the studies and moral standards in society are going down. Respect for parents, elders and teachers is decreasing. To improve the performance of the students, the following activities are planned-

  1. Inculcating moral values by taking moral classes

  2. Career guidance programme for the school students with preparation for competitive exams from std. 8th

  3. Soft skill development programmes and computer education for school children.

  4. Skill development programmes for school dropouts similar to JOC/ ITI

Anuja Mudda runs 60 kms day with a mission to create awareness Child Molestation and Women Empowerment

On 13th March she would be in Belagavi at Sanklp Bhumi by 8 PM
She would like to interact with women’s organizations and students.

Anuja Mudda started her journey with running over a year ago and has completed 2 full marathons, a few 32 k and several half marathons to her credit. She was also one of the pacers at a running event at the Ficci Flo Marathon in Pune and have made it to the podium at the Puma Urban stampede event in 2015.

As a woman and humanitarian, she has always felt passionate about women empowerment and children.

anuja-muddaOver the years, there has been an alarming increase in rate of child molestation cases that have been reported. It is shocking to note that in many of the cases the children are abused by their own family members. Repercussions of such instances lead to the child remaining withdrawn and timid with pent up emotions as usually such cases are dismissed by elders in the family. Filled with shame and remorse, such children grow up with psychological scars which impairs their married and sexual life at a later stage.

She plans to promote this cause of Child Molestation and Women Empowerment and raise its awareness by doing a run from Pune to Goa on 8th March 2017.  With this run, she will be covering a distance of 450 km covering three states in 8 days and will be covering 60km everyday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has promised to release 2 tmc ft. of water after April 1 for the drinking water needs of drought affected areas of North Karnataka.

The assurance was given to a delegation by Karnataka BJP leaders who explained the plight of the people in Belagavi, Bagalkot and other districts in the North Karnataka. The leaders submitted a a request-letter to Mr. Fadnavis at his office in Mumbai on Friday. The leaders had a fruitful discussion for over an hour.

Members of the delegation included former Minister Laxman Savadi, MLA; Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore; Bagalkot MP P.C. Gaddigoudar; Mahantesh M. Kavatagimath, MLC; Raju Kage; Duryodhan Aihole and Sashikala Jolle.

Several villages along the Krishna in these three districts were facing acute drinking water shortage. Plight of both farmers and cattle is miserable and they were undergoing forced-migration leaving the aged and physically disabled to survive on their own.

The many colors of Belagavi’s Holi

Few countries in the world celebrate a festival with as much fervor across the country as Holi is in India. And to make things special, Belagavi is one city which celebrates it not once but twice, in a matter of a week.

Belagavi’s Holi is special mainly because of its geographic demarcation. While ‘Belagavi’ celebrates it the day after Holi, the areas coming under the erstwhile Sangli presidency, ie. Shahapur, Vadgaon and Angol celebrate it on the fifth day, ie. The Rang Panchami day. This makes matters curious.

On one hand, kids and the youth experience double the joy, the common-folk and the women face problems on both days for they cannot move out. You have known many households where the school going kids and the working men have left home early to cross the ‘border’ and move to the other side on respective days!

holi belagavi

It all sounds funny now, but we have had exams, even SSLC ones, on days when it was played in Shahapur-Vadgaon-Angol. Belagavi’s Holi fever begins days in advance when Ganpat Galli, Shahapur Khade Bazar and Kirloskar road see road-side shops displaying ‘Pichkaari’ masks, small balloons, colors- dry and water based, weird wigs, drag costumes and other paraphernalia associated with playing with colors. Kids duly purchase new pichkaaris every year.

Of late, a lot of awareness has been created about not wasting water and hence many prefer dry colors. Gone are the days when ‘saree colors’ or ‘Khadi color was the norm, especially in Shahapur-Vadgaon where many saree factories were located and this color was easily accessible.

holi belagaviCome D-day and you’d wake up with crackles of laughter of kids and loud sounds of bikes zooming on the roads. Every youth turns a macho man behind the anonymity of color smeared on his face. Riding triple seat, throwing balloons on unsuspecting people on the roads and shouting loudly is the staple of the day. Deshmukh road, RPD cross has seen scenes of hundreds of shirts being hung on overhead electricity wires, clothes stripped from bikers as they pass by. However, this trend has somehow died down of late. If men are on the streets, women are not far behind. Knocking doors and pulling friends out, they enjoy in their very own way.

The new trend of having public Holi celebrations has helped aggregate people at one place with music to boot. The police also clamp down the festivities after 1.00 p.m. enabling many office-goers to move freely post-lunch. There are places in India where Holi is played for days together. One day or many, Holi brings joy and leaves memories behind. Stains notwithstanding.

Letter to God

Dear God,

We know you are very busy attending to the woes of people around the world and finding remedies for their prayers. We are sure, you have a soft corner for us Belagaumites . Why else would you test us in such a way, if you never knew we had the grit to face any challenge! Our problems ( we know, some may even fume at this trivialization of disgust) are much more complicated than those that the UN faces (and ultimately sleeps over) everyday! Kindly ponder over our list and help us find solutions for the same.

Letters-to-GodHave you noticed the frenetic prayers of parents from Belagavi, whose children routinely migrate to other cities for their livelihood? Lack of career options has forced them to, much to the chagrin of the resident natives in those cities. But we are helpless God.

Please put up some massive projects around Belagavi so that our folks sleep in peace while we work in our home-town. And that will save them the lonely days while they uproot themselves from sprawling homes here and come to live in cramped flats in the big cities, losing their friends and identity and scarily peeping below from tiny balconies over the mad traffic below.

We know you have no time for entertainment, but we need our daily dose of music and Bollywood. Can you imagine God, the whole world has enjoyed the fruits of an FM station for years, but we still pray for one? So please don’t relegate this prayer into the date-barred bin, it is still valid for us.

God, do you know that our Corporators and men-in-power swear by the phrase ‘Road to Perdition’? They literally do, and make us traverse through the same every single day. Can you please grow us some wings, so that we are saved the agony of broken backbones and vehicles turning turtle in the potholes of these dreaded roads? We promise we will not crowd your skies but fly decently.

Do you know God, that time is supreme in today’s era? Oh! How will you? You have to follow no time, but we do. And don’t be surprised by the spurt in tension-induced heart problems, God. We are just waiting for the trains to pass on the crammed railway gates from times immemorial. As we make our way through the trespassing riders from the other end, we have missed classes and been late to work, but our bosses never buy our argument that an overbridge is all we need. They say even God cant help you with this one! Is it true God? (Thankfully we have got one)

God, please, please make sense to the central and state governments to at last solve the border dispute. If Sudan can resolve its issues, if the Berlin wall can come down, if Srilanka can see peace, why can’t we?

We have many prayers God, but that will bore you. So we are submitting only a few of those. Kindly find time from your busy schedule and answer our prayers God. We will offer you a kilo of the best kunda if you do!

Thanking you in earnest anticipation

Belagaviites –in- tears

P.S. If you can’t trace us on the map, please use your heavenly GPRS, we lie sandwiched between three states and you may even hear our silent cries and sighs if you pay attention.

The Shops / residential building/ mutton shop and the health Department sub branch and shops beside which have completed the Lease period at Nath Pai circle, Shahpur will be demolished and as an alternate for those who will lose their shops and residential buildings in road Widening from Shahpura Nath Pai circle to Shahpur police station a mew G+1 building will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 40 lakhs.

City Corporation of Belagavi has decided to take up the development of Various Buildings within the Corporation limits. Hence the existing vacant land under transmission line is been taken for the development along with the Mutton shop which will be demolished as it is in a poor condition.

nath-pai-circleThe project is being executed under the NAGAROTHANA PROGRAMME (PHASE-3).

This is for the first time that the Corporation has commenced to build something to be given as compensation for the land property acquired in Road widening even before they are acquired or demolished.

Then why is that the same principle or rule was not applied to others like in Ramling Khind Galli; where a few people lost 100% of their house and were forced to stay in the open.

IGP speaking to media told, in contrast with the murders nad other crimes, the police needed to look into taking preventive steps so that accidents could be avoided. A accident zone mapping was commenced from 2015 which has reduced a few accidents, but the police need to  improve highway patrolling and take other stringent measures, which further helped in reduced number of accidents.

The police focused on rowdies and goonda elements, registered 1,575 cases against rowdies alone in 2015 and 1,919 in 2016. Also, 755 cases were registered against goonda elements during 2015 and 784 in 2016.

Heart Transplantation can be done at KLE Hospital Belagavi

70% of the urban Indian population is at risk of being diagnosed with heart disease. Based on disease specific estimates of prevalence and incidence rates of heart failure, a conservative estimate of the prevalence of heart failure in India due to coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes and rheumatic heart disease ranges from 1.3 to 4.6 million, with an annual incidence of 491600-1.8 million.

A heart transplant involves replacing a diseased heart with a donor’s healthy heart. A heart transplant is considered when heart failure is so severe that it does not respond to any other therapy.

Heart failure is a condition when the pumping action of the heart is unable to supply the needs of the body. It can be sudden in onset (acute heart failure) or develop more slowly without the person knowing that anything is wrong( chronic heart failure).Causes for heart failure could include viral infections of the heart(myocarditis), post heart attack, narrowed valves or cardiomyopathies.

kle-heart
Press meet photo where information about Heart Transplant was told

Once the heart starts malfunctioning, in time other organs deprived of a good circulation will start getting damaged as well. The lungs, kidneys, brain and liver are particularly vulnerable. Advanced heart failure has a 70-80% chance of death if untreated. This is worse than most cancers.

Most patients will require nothing more than medications, life style changes and close monitoring to ensure that they are stable. There are many new innovations in the treatment of heart failure, from new drugs to pacemakers and new surgical therapies.

In patients with severe heart failure that is unresponsive to therapy, treatment options fall into two categories- support with an artificial heart or replace with another heart (heart transplant)

Survival among heart transplant recipients has improved as a result of improvements in treatments that supress the immune system and prevent infection. Approximately 85 to 90 percent of heart transplant patients are living one year after their surgery, with an annual death rate of approximately 4 percent thereafter. The 3 year survival approaches 75%.

Living donor candidates should be: in good physical and mental health, free from high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, HIV, hepatitis, or organ specific diseases, at least 18 years old and less than 55 years.

A good donor should also be willing to donate, be well informed, have good support in the decision to donate and have no alcohol or substance abuse problems.

Brain Death

Brain death is the total and irreversible loss of all brain function and the circumstance under which the donation of vital organs most commonly takes place.

The concept of brain death is often difficult for families to come to terms with when dealing with a tragic loss. Their loved one who has suffered from an injury to the brain is in a hospital intensive care unit. Doctors are doing everything possible to help the patient including supporting blood pressure and heart rate with medications, breathing for the patient with a ventilator, and constantly monitoring the patient’s condition. Often, for the patient with a non-traumatic brain injury like a stroke, there is no outward sign that their loved one has suffered a devastating and non-survivable injury to the brain. The patient looks to be asleep, is warm to touch and appears to breath, albeit with the help of a machine.

It is under these circumstances that families are asked to understand that their loved one has died. It is also under the same scenario that organ donation is presented as an option in order to give life to others.

Brain death occurs when a person has an irreversible, catastrophic brain injury, which causes total cessation of all brain function (the upper brain structure and brain stem). Brain death is not a coma or persistent vegetative state. A patient who is in a coma or persistent vegetative state typically has some brain stem function (which controls breathing) and possibly other brain function. When a person is brain dead, no part of the brain is functioning any longer.

When someone is brain dead, it means that the brain is no longer working in any capacity and never will again. Other organs, such as the heart, kidneys or liver, can still work for a short time if the breathing machine is left in place, but when brain death is declared, it means the person has died.

Death of the brain can occur from accidental injuries or illness. High blood pressure can also cause bleeding in the brain and result in death. A brain infection, a brain tumor or a traumatic injury may cause the brain to swell and lead to death as well.

Brain death is determined in the hospital by one or more physicians not associated with a transplantation team. Doctors examining the patient will conduct a battery of tests to determine whether any brain activity is present. If all brain activity is absent, the patient is dead.

The heart is part of the autonomic nervous system and thus has the ability to beat independently of the brain as long as it has oxygen. The heart will eventually stop beating as all bodily systems begin to stop working shortly after brain death. Once this process has begun, it cannot be reversed. At the time a physician declares brain death, the patient is dead. Mechanical support (a breathing machine) keeps oxygen going to the organs until they can be recovered for transplant. The machine is not keeping the patient alive (brain death is irreversible and is legally and medically recognized as death), it is merely keeping the organs viable until they can be recovered.

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in KLES Dr.Prabhakar Kore Hospital has performed over 22,000 heart operations. People in these areas should be aware that :

1.Heart transplantation is a good option for end stage heart failure

2.It can be done at KLE Hospital

Online Grocery Apana Dukaan at your service

While India’s eCommerce market is expected to grow 50 percent in the next five years, according to Economic Survey 2016-17. The regular Brick & Mortar (B&M) stores in your neighborhood are going hitech with entering the on-line model and some new ones are working on the reverse model as well, starting an on-line store and then a (B&M) store.

Sudhir Patil, an engineer by Profession who hails from Khanapur, about 25 kms from Belagavi came up with this idea of Online grocery delivery

http://www.apanadukaan.com/  or Google Play Store which supplies Home delivery of groceries to Belagavi and Khanapur.

The USP according to Sudhir is to supply Best Quality products right at your doorstep with amazing discounts and offers on MRP. Apana Dukaan is Belagavi’s online food and grocery store, with over 500 products and over many brands. They sell products in categories right from Grocery and Staples, Cosmetics, Personal care, Home Cleanings, Spices and other branded foods. They will deliver all your household needs at your doorstep which Saves time and money by shopping at our online store.

apnadukan belgaum grocery
They also have a Brick & Mortar in Shahpur from where all the deliveries will happen.

Inaugural offer Upto 15% discount

We asked Sudhir, Why online store when others have failed in Belagavi?

Failures are part of life, If one thinks he will fail before he begins, he wont be successful, Risks have to be taken and I have taken one. Other might have failed due the ROI issue but I am here to stay and serve the people of Belagavi and Khanapur.

Sudhir further added

We have just begun and with time we will add Home made products to our stable which we think is the biggest untapped market. If we can give good quality home made products such as pickles, Papads or maslas, the customer will always want to come back to us. Currently we are in a phase where we are identifying such Women self help groups which make good quality products and we would assure them a good market.

Online ordering is just one more avenue, so that people staying away could easily buy goods at their convenience, they also have the WahtsApp numbers where the order can be sent and they would deliver it.

In a place like Khanapur where net penetration for online buying is less, WhatsApp can work for us and same is the case here, where elders who may not be able to book it online can send us the list of goods required and we will dispatch them.

Corporation to build shops as alternate for those who lost property in road widening

New complex in Shahpur for those who loose property in Road widening in Shahpur, along with this the same Tender has been changed to accommodate construction of shops near Ganesh Temple corporation shops in Vaccine Depot Road and also at APMC road.

  • The changed tender now says under Package No.27
Dismantling of existing shops & Construction of commercial shops near Ganesh Temple corporation shops in Vaccine Depot Road
  • Construction of Commercial Shops in Corporation open space of APMC Road as an alternate for them who have lost their land in widening of road in Belagavi.

ccb-boardThis is for the first time that the Corporation has commenced to build something to be given as compensation for the land property acquired in Road widening even before they are acquired or demolished.

Then why is that the same principle or rule was not applied to others like in Ramling Khind Galli; where a few people lost 100% of their house and were forced to stay in the open.

It is still unclear as to whom the said shops which will require another 9 months to come up will be given to and on what basis.

Belagavi had Zero Tolerance road but nobody tolerated it

Did you know in November 2010, the city of Belagavi had a ZERO Tolerance Road ?

Sweden was the first country to introduce the zero-tolerance principle (Tingvall, 1999). The basis for this vision is the ethical principle derived from road users’ abilities and needs. The design and construction of the transport system is to serve all citizens and ensure that a human error in traffic should not lead to a severe injury. The ultimate goal of traffic enforcement, therefore, is zero fatalities.

zero tolerance zoneThe same must be envisaged by Belagavi traffic and now a board had been put up at Dharmveer Sambhaji Circle which mentioned that this was a ZERO TOLERANCE ZONE.

zero tolerance zone

The board mentions that “any traffic offenders will be punished”.

Normally ZTS are made so that people are more educated and no one violates any traffic rule.

But the long gone vision set up in 2010 is not visible in 2017. After 7 years the implementation of this Zero tolerance must have been added to other areas, but luckily for the citizens the implementation never happened nor in 2010 and nor now.
There is no traffic cop to regulate traffic at Dharmveer Sambhaji Circle since years and no one has even thought of it. The police say they have a dearth of staff but we do see traffic cops in groups of 4 catching hold of traffic violators mainly non helmet at Sanchayani circle and Dr.Rajendra Prasad circle, thats 50 mtrs on each side from Dharmveer Sambhaji Circle.

This article might just remind the Cops that once there was a Zero tolerance zone they had created and we hope they make more such zones and implement it properly.

All the places in the world and nowhere to go

by Swatee Jog

A week is such a wonderful experience in Belagavi with commuting time less than 30 minutes from one end to the other and hardly 3-4 traffic signals on any given route of business district. Belagavi workplaces also boast of that old-worldly charm with simple people who care for each other. Have a stroll along Belagavi’s quadrangular streets any evening and you are sure to bump into some colleague or friend. However, not all’s so rosy on weekends. The biggest worry for families and the youth is the lack of options to spend weekends. Since the city functions on a 6 day week, the weekend begins late on Saturday and spills over to Sunday night. Normally, a city boasts of leisure places like restaurants, cafeterias, malls, multiplexes, exhibition centers, art galleries, amusement parks, zoos, gardens, fine dining standalone restaurants or eateries at bigger hotels, book shops, etc. How many of the above options are available to us?weekend-belagavi

Let us put it succinctly… when was the last time you heard Ajanta Café / Uday Bhavan / Saffron / Sanman , etc. changed their menu or introduced some new dish with a major announcement?
When was the last time you heard of some chef of repute from a Star grade hotel being invited to cook and present his signature fare for Belagavi foodies? Exceptions exist may be only for the Fish Festival/Oriental Food fest organized by some hotels.

Don’t you think we are tired of the same old fare dished out year after year? By change, I mean not variations in portion sizes/ change in dish designs / change in presentation. McDonald’s, KFC, Subway and a host of other places have opened up and new trend is small eateries, which are known to people in a specific area.

The Art scene in Belagavi is lackluster at its best and dismal at its worst. Subhash Studio has a gallery, albeit a small cramped one and they hold some showings. Mahaveer Bhavan recently introduced another and Vangmay Charcha mandal presents some stuff every year. The city prides itself on artists like Kamkar Datta, Shirish Deshpande, Bharat Jagtap, etc. Why don’t we get to see art in its varied and vibrant forms here? With incomes surging and décor tastes getting subtle, any artist worth his talent should get a thumping response in Belagavi. Murals, glass, installation art, mixed medium, stone work have never been shown by any artist in the city.

The exhibition scene is so pathetic that we rebound and flock to any board that spells it, irrespective of whether the ware on sale is relevant to our tastes and needs. No wonder we found hundreds of women at the auto expo, not out of curiosity about the vintages or the Beetle, bet many may not even be aware of the uniqueness of some of the vehicles, but more for the vegetable peelers and the furniture and food stalls. Show me one woman who can tell which stable Santa Fe belongs and I will show you ten who have noted that Emu was available at the expo! While you wait at the traffic signal at the old NCC office, one never misses the crowds seen jostling at the exhibit inside, poring through sarees, imitation jewelry, shirts, bags and mugs and cups.
We now do have the KLE convention centre, KalaMandir is now more of a Store house than any mandir.

Belagavi has no zoo, ( now come on, the animals we’ve been seeing at Military Mahadev qualify to be guests at the most), no amusement park, no water park ( yes, I know the Fort Lake has boating facility), no book store that organizes book readings, no cafes that belt old classic English numbers or present live bands, our gardens are stamp size and overcrowded. Hindalga Ganesh Mandir is a good option to the devout and now provides some games for the kids but is ruled out in the monsoons for obvious reasons. The lone mall is insufficient- has been repeatedly visited and the shopping streets provide no real pleasure anymore. All these places are frequented by everyone – the youth, the families with kids in tow, the elderly and the womenfolk out for some serious shopping sprees and time pass.

Let’s not despair for there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. Belagavi has always been an eternally optimistic city. But another week comes to an end. So where are you going?

Auto Drivers misbehave with citizens they to fight it hard at Belagavi Station

Well fighting with auto drivers by commuters is a well known fact to the commuters but on Tuesday a citizen fought hard with the auto driver and we all must appreciate his valor.

The auto driver asked double the fare than normal as per the citizen and this where the brawl started and even they indulged in a physical fight.

The auto driver said
Aap hotel mein jate ho udhar khate udhar kya meter se deto ho, Hospital mein jate ho udhar kya meter se deto ho, Udhar deto to humne kyon nahi dete

The commuter said he was not new to Belagavi and knew how these auto drivers loot, but when he asked double the normal fare he could not control.

Auto driver attacked the passengers which is a very bad sign and this needs to be stopped, is this GUNDA Raaj.

He had first approached the pre paid auto booth at the Belagavi railway station which is a monument of sorts, just awaiting a declaration from the Archaeological survey of India.

The police never acts on the auto drivers not sure why, they do a facial make up after the issue rakes up for a day and thats it no change.

The arrogance of the Auto drivers is so much one day they might even put a knife and ask the fare a person said on Social media.

Note of Caution: Always be careful when indulging in such spats with the Auto drivers as they are united and earlier occasions as well they have attacked the commuters in a group.
And this is high time the Police look into this seriously or they always need an order from a Honourable to Judge of the court to act upon.
