The Joys of Simplicity

by Sameer Majli

Snuggled cosy in a less conspicuous part of our blue planet, I am Belagavi aka Belgaum, erstwhile Venugram. I may not rank among the most affluent of the human spaces and certainly not among the ‘Must Visit ‘ spots, yet I do have my share of the special and its most understood and held close to heart by anyone who has spent time in my midst. It’s the experience of being me and with me that makes it so.belagavi belgaum

I am blessed with maybe nothing and yet almost everything because the ambiance does not hang around the extremes. Temperate summers, just the right share of the rain and moderate winters, I am blessed with them all. I may not have my fill of neither the exotic traits of the hill stations nor the golden stretches of the beach sand like my brethren but there still is enough pleasure and comfort in my simplicity. I may not have the symbols of the magnificence of human creation in the form of towering skyscrapers or amusement parks or malls but then,  I still am a place where one is witness to the perfect balance between the traditional and the modern. Industry has stayed away from me, at least the larger entities have and I have no plush offices to boast of, yet I am, in more than a sense glad that even the human excesses have stayed away. I am officially a city but then also a town and in parts even a village and this is what I feel, makes me feel as special as I do.

I know that it isnt right to go on in praise of what others would perceive as a relative compromise or the inability of my citizens to be more ‘industrious’ as they call it and yet I retain the appeal that merits more than attention and even at times a touch excessive praise from those that partake the joys of my simplistic beauty. I am, just like my folk, quite content with what we are as an entity; a place where there still is time for a smile and there isnt the need to travel too many a mile to reach out to loved ones. To some it may sound like a compromise in the modern context but then since I am a place where there is more life in living, I guess I may grab my share of the claim that I am what every person wants a perfect home to be.

Me and my folks have apparently always been a little away from the limelight and my metropolitan relatives do pull my leg for the same but then simplicity of living is a rare find in the modern day world. The ravages of time and technology have stayed away and we still wake up to calm mornings and sleep to silent nights and I need not say how important the twain are. No excessive hooting of the horns, no thundering trains, no towering chimneys spewing tons of smoke, no choking pollution, no scent of excessive human inhabitation that’s typical of the overcrowded metros; I am and we are really content being our own unique selves. Our joys are simple and even less expensive. Our relations are stronger and expressions of joy more human rather than just rave. We still have time to hold hands, to care and to share and this I feel is worth feeling special about.

There may be alter opinions and claims of lack of opportunism but isn’t life worth more than just living. While change may seem to be just around the corner, I am glad that its pace is still stuck in indecision. It may seem a foolhardy compromise but when I see my folk going about their tasks and still managing to find time for each other, I do take pride that I am able to accommodate a more human form of living.

Isnt their life worth anything?

The misfortune continues unabated. We are barely coming to terms with the tragedy of the engineering student killed in a road accident at Udyambag and now we have two girls who were still at school being claimed by the fact that we choose to turn a blind eye at reality.

Its getting crazier by the day and while it is convenient to blame the roads and the traffic if not the police who are manning the streets, the truth is that we are flirting with what cannot be undone. How many deaths will it take for the city to wake up to the need for caution before we quite literally empower our children with bikes.

accident
Photo:traffic-accident.biz

While there is a definite amount of truth in the fact that the traffic is getting crazier by the day, the sheer carelessness is frightening.

The family of the kids will continue their struggle with the cruelty of fate but much needs to be said and done regarding the actions of the family if not just the parents and the children themselves. Why is it that these acts are allowed and even tolerated by the citizens of this city.

It is a matter of great pride when we declare that Belagavi is the chosen one when it comes to being among the list of smart cities. However, a smart city is not just smart infrastructure; its more to do with smart and responsible citizens.

What were the parents thinking about when they allowed these kids to take the ride. Isnt it time to rid ourselves of this concept of false prestige over the fact that we take great pride in declaring that our child is yet in school but he or she already knows how to ride a bike? What has been accomplished by these bits of super irresponsible parenting is for everyone to see.

There are definite laws against under age driving and it is time to implement them in spirit rather than just as a matter of compulsion. The law also says that helmets are compulsory but the streets are littered with young and old attempting to bypass the rule itself. For the police, it is sadly a matter of catching a few and imposing fines but implementation is more about true implementation rather than focusing on monetary collections. True, the parent must be prosecuted to maybe even set an example but just thay is not sufficient.

Even educational institutions need go step up the ante and announce that any case of underage riding or driving, stunts and triple riding will be severely dealt with. Cant we make such announcements that violators will be even expelled if necessary. Institutions may say that they dont allow kids without licence to park their vehicles on the campus but what about all those who still indulge and park outside campuses? In the recent cases its observed that the riders have been killed and largely for a fault of their own but what about cases where they managed to kill someone else? What punishment would befit such a crime committed on account of the fool hardy carelessness of the parents?

Parents, take this seriously! If you have an under-18 teenager who has a flair for riding or driving, better keep your eyes open. Parents of minors riding or driving two-wheelers or cars will be arrested. With an eye on the safety of pedestrians and other motorists. Minors cannot be booked according to the law, so their parents who are abetting them to ride or drive will be booked. The police feel that without such stringency it would be difficult to discipline minors or create awareness about road safety and traffic law.

The High Court of Karnataka has asked the police to book parents for minors riding/driving. Under section 184, parents can be sent to jail for six months or fined up to Rs 1,000, or both.

It is time that the action becomes more definite. Its is time that each one wakes up to the responsibility and does everything one can to stop the children from violating rules and taking undue risks. Isnt their life worth anything?

Common Sense – Shall’s and Shall Nots

In the wake of the recent focus on traffic rules and traffic sense, a few issues that come to mind…..

The biggest of them encompasses most of them and states

“I SHALL ABIDE BY TRAFFIC RULES AND COMMON TRAFFIC SENSE MYSELF; BEFORE EXPECTING OTHERS TO DO THE SAME”

traffic-rules belagaviHere are a few others that come to my mind

A) I shall ensure that both me and my family members have a valid driving licence before we use vehicles

B) I shall use the helmet when I on a two wheeler and a seat belt when I am in a car and will make sure that I extend the advice to others when I discover that they are not doing so

C) I shall drive/ride within speed limits rather than over accelerate

D) I shall overtake only if and when necessary and shall ensure that I have a clear sight of where I am heading

E) I shall be extra careful at intersections especially the blind intersections where owners of corner plots have constructed compound walls

F) I shall not squeeze through the traffic signal or the railway crossing at the last moment

G) I shall respect the barricades and the one way roads that have been defined and not resort to wrong side driving or riding even if it means an apparent extra distance to travel

H) I shall keep safe distance from other vehicles even on clear roads

I) I will be extra careful while driving near schools or through relatively narrow lanes in anticipation of someone suddenly trying to cross across the road

J) I shall be extra careful when I am driving through relatively dimly lit roads at night or even early morning despite the fact that the street may seem clear

K) I shall not have excess riders on my two wheeler

L) I shall make sure that I do not park at corners or in any manner that may cause inconvenience to others

M) I shall respect accommodate the inconvenience caused by the manner of the elderly, new learners and the children who are either walking or riding/driving on the streets, especially their tendency to do it slowly

N) I SHALL NOT USE THE MOBILE PHONE WHILE I AM RIDING THE BIKE OR WHILE DRIVING A CAR BUT WILL PULL OVER TO THE SIDE AND TALK IF IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY

O) I shall exercise absolute caution and effectively use the side and rear view mirrors to gauge vehicles in proximity

P) I shall not indulge in riding side by side with friends and hold conversations while I am riding

Q) I shall not indulge in eating or drinking while I am driving my vehicle regardless of whether I am on a crowded or clear road

R) I SHALL CAREFULLY MONITOR HOW MY SON OR DAUGHTER IS USING THE VEHICLE TO ENSURE THAT HIS/HER RIDING/DRIVING IS NO THREAT TO ANYONE INCLUDING SELF

S) I shall focus on the maintenance of the vehicles in the family and make necessary corrections when necessary

More importantly….

I shall consciously make sure that i inform others to do the same whenever I see them not following the minimum precautions that need to be taken….BOTH In person and on social media.

Even if the police are not doing the job, I will do mine because it’s my life and that of my family and friends and fellow citizens that is at stake…

BJP asked to get clearance from SPG for Modi’s rally

From The Hindu –
In a shocking happening and sheer negligence amounting to compromising with the Prime Minister’s security, although unwittingly in their over-enthusiasm, the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders here have taken up erection of the main stage from where Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a large farmers rally at the sprawling open ground of the Angadi Institute of Technology on Savagaon Road on February 27, without prior clearance from the Special Protection Group (SPG).

Taking serious note of the happening, Police Commissioner Soumendu Mukherjee, who inspected the spot and the fabrication works under way at the venue, advised the BJP leaders, including Suresh C. Angadi, MP, Sanjay B. Patil, MLA, Abhay Patil, former MLA, to first obtain clearance from the SPG before erecting the pandal for the main stage.

Mr. Mukherjee asked the BJP leaders, in the presence of mediapersons, to submit a clear and detailed sketch of the venue showing the exact location of the main stage being erected for the Prime Minister and other VIPs with exact dimensions, the fencing and distance from the dais and other arrangements being made at the venue.

Once the SPG approved of the plan of work at the venue, the BJP could go ahead with the erection of the stage, and also make other arrangements as per the plan thus cleared by the SPG.

The SPG is a specialised security force of highly skilled and trained commandos formed to provide proximate security to the Prime Minister and former Prime Ministers and their immediate families. Along with the SPG, some of the major tasks of the police are to ensure the personal safety of Very Important Persons, including the Prime Minister, all their engagements and public functions pass off punctually and smoothly. Importantly, they are required to ensure that terrorist/extremist/fundamentalist elements do not gain access to the Prime Minister and other VIPs.

SOS-May Day May Day

The vastness of the clear expanse of the skies, vividly painted in a wonderful blue is a perfect canvas for the expressions of the grandeur of the sun as it takes to the skies each day. The magnificience of the sun and the welcomeness of its presence is severely marred by its present expression. It is just about the end of February and it already feels like May and we dread the form that it will take by the time it actually gets to being May on a calender.
belagavi sky

Our city was once a place of bliss for us citizens who took great pride in its moderate and temperate, if not cool climate. The practices of modernness set in and the city is no longer even a shade of its erstwhile glory. Large patches of vegetation have been cleared and they made way to extensive patches of modern infrastructure. We stand witness to the eventualities that stem out of our thirst to replace the green with organized heaps of cement and concrete in which we seek to make homes out of our houses.

As we seek our pleasures in imagining the shape of a Smart City, the truth dawns upon us in a manner that is distincly discomforting if not excessively torrid. As the whirring of the mechanized chain saws and the cruel blows of the axe lay waste to trees that once adorned the landscape, we are left wondering as to whether we have done anything right to this wonderful piece of the blue planet that we call our own.

The mercury is on a crazy, upward spiral and having crossed the mid thirties, we are already inching towards the threatening forties. The scorching heat has already made its intentions clear. It is going to keep us close company for more than a while now. Already at around 10 in the morning, it is getting difficult to walk in the sun. The sweat on the brow symbolizes what we have earned from our exploits. The fans are already turning endlessly and the air conditioners have started whirring through the day.

The Rain Gods were super unkind in the previous year and the Sun God seems super generous. The water situation in the city will soon go for a toss. The days when we shared water are gone. Now we compete for it. Each one digs a well that is deeper than the one that the neighbour has and the water table is receding to the depths. The concrete and roads have played their part and since there is no scope for water to percolate, it stays on the surface and evaporates.

While human progress does and will have consequences, it may not be all this bad in five years time if we wake up now. How many of us even remember the last time we planted a tree?

Its crazy and can only get crazier unless better sense prevails.

It is time to act, consciously and purposefully otherwise the SOS term May Day will soon become a literal term when every day is a May Day…..
