All the 13 accused in the murder of Dr.Chetan Patil have been acquitted of all the charges due to lack of evidence.
It may be recalled that on August 27, 2012, 28-year-old doctor Chetan Patil of Gadhinglaj was brutally stabbed on Fort road. The doctor had come to Belagavi from Bagalkot and was heading to his hometown Gadhinglaj when he was attacked by a group of boys on Fort Road. According to the police, Dr Chetan Patil watched the Salman Khan starrer Ek Tha Tiger on Sunday night. He had his dinner at a hotel later and was on his way to the bus terminus when he was attacked and killed.
Chetan Patil, who was the only son of Appasaheb Patil, had passed his MBBS from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belagavi.
The court acquitted all the 13 which also included a ex corporator.
Names of the acquitted: Salman Dalyat, Nayim Sarkvas, Syedali Qadri, Naved Shiledar, Abdul Mujawar, Altaf Subedar, Tabez Bhatkande, Rehmat Shaikh, Majhar Makandar, Niqab Peerzade, Salim Soudagar, Rizwan Dalyat and Baulal Mujawar.
The tormentor has arrived and this time with promises to stay. How inconsiderate? Our brains have been blessed with a natural casing and why do we need another? Why the hell do we need a casing of fibre when we have one made of bone material?
As it is, the summers are hot enough and to add to the sweltering heat, the compulsion of the helmet. Why do they wish to see Star Wars on the street? What a pity!!! Why doesn’t anyone consider what happens to our hairstyle. Forget the hairstyle, why don’t they think of what happens to the hair itself? The sweat and the heat are a deadly combine that will ensure loads of scalp problems and dandruff, not to mention, hair loss. What about the tons of make-up that will be washed down the face?
Riders fined for not wearing helmet in Belagavi
Something that everyone dreads; don’t they? Is the government just trying to ensure that the shampoo and cosmetic sales improve?
As it is, we have a million tensions and these keep the brain overheated. A clear and open head makes sure that this heat dissipates and we retain our cool. How could they not consider this?
And we are skilled riders, aren’t we? Look, they are the ones who certified this when they gave us the license to ride, isn’t it?
Millions of questions and no one seems to care. How unfortunate, how inhuman!!!
Helmet fines on a Single day (March 1, 2016): Total cases 1156 and fine collected Rs. 116100
– Traffic police
Staggering statistics! The first thoughts that come to the minds of the defaulters have just been mentioned.
One sensible rule made by the government and the whole populace seems to be in agony. Even after the accidents and the deaths, nothing seems to serve as the wakeup call. Everyone is just so sure that it won’t happen to them that they consider it worth the risk. Surely the one change we see is people carrying helmets but their position defies their purpose. A head casing that dangles rather uncomfortably on the handle of the motorcycle or stays put in the feet of the gearless bikes; this is not what the law was made for. Children, parents, the educated and the uneducated, everyone seems to have lost it.
Sometimes one wonders why one should care, least of all, those that travel in a car but the sight and the insensible behavior is overwhelming.
The government also seems to be not too keen on really doing what it should be doing. Just imposing fines once in a while is not going to solve anything. Why did they do away with the rule itself in the first place? Is it just that they wish to ensure that the helmet manufacturers keep getting steady sales since over time the unused helmets become worthless? Why is it so that sometimes the head is safe and sometimes it is not? Forget the pillion riders, even the person in front does not seem to care for what is his or her head.
Should they be allowed this choice? Should there be a compulsion?
If it’s a head that has a brain within, it will surely comply, otherwise,
Over 40 species of birds at Belagavi Fort lake; Yes it is true. The small island and the lake itself attracts about 40 species of birds all the year round. But now this natural habitat of the birds on the island in the middle of the lake is endangered with the plan of setting up a Buddha Statue and a huge National Flag on the island.
Indian Spot Billed Duck, Pond Heron, Little Egret, White Throated King Fisher, Red Wattled Lapwing, Black Winged Stilt, Grey Heron, Eagle’s, Bulbuls, Wagtails and many other species were sighted at the lake.

The govt and the district administration has planned to spend over 2 crores to set up a statute and a very big national flag, and this beyond doubt will destroy the natural habitat of the birds.
The installation of Buddha statue and national flag is approved by a special committee under the 100 crore special fund. The State Government is yet to give its nod for the same and once the permission is sought work can commence. One more hurdle is the birds nesting here are not on records of the Govt as any mini sanctuary or something like that, hence getting permission for the same wont be too ambitious.
It is a common scene that one can see some Advertisement boards hanged on trees by nailing those trees. But did you know that is illegal to nail a public tree.
See this image an Ad board nailed to a tree which is very old on the Railway over bridge. The ruthless hammering of nails into trees is akin to a path set for its slow death.
Photo Sundar
The nails damage the tissues responsible for carrying water and nutrients through the tree. The trees may take longer to heal from the initial prick and therefore be under more stress. This makes them more vulnerable to pests and diseases.
A Supreme Court diktat clearly specifies that no public property including trees can be used for any private advertisements.
Burning of waste under the trees, improper trimming, old tree-guards and irrational cementing of the ground around tree bases are other critical issues.
But who cares, the civic administration will be least bothered to act on such acts, but it is necessary.
Jewellers will go on indefinite strike from March 1 in protest over the imposement of 1% excise duty on gold articles, the Shroff’s Association Shahpur declared in a press note.
The excise duty was imposed by Congress govt in 2012-13 and then for more than 20 days all the shops were closed. Then BJP MLAs Mps had supported the Bandh.
The main issue for the said tax is under the said act each jweller will have to register take a license, maintain registers and has also the impact of inspector raj.
It will be a headache for the small jewelers, which make up 80 percent of the industry, and they will have another department to report to from a compliance point of view. The planned excise tax will make purchases more expensive for buyers and lead to irregular business practices.
Pangul Galli is a phenomenon. You can’t understand until you’ve experienced. I’d never heard about this narrow by -lane of Ganpat Galli until a few years ago. And then it trolled me, like it did many others. So much so that today, when you need anything, from Kurtis to plastic ware, kitchenware, toys, gifts, cloth and cosmetics, and you say you’ve bought it someplace else, you’ll much likely hear someone say “Why didn’t you buy it at Pangul Galli? You’d get cheaper”.
Pangul Galli Belagavi
A simple street that was known for the lone landmark, the famous Ashwathama temple, somehow found fame as businesses set shop to be near the golden quadrilateral of Belgavi’s business area.
Today, the real estate prices here are higher than some other tony areas of the town. It houses dinghy shops, spacious showrooms and hole –in- the- wall stockists selling everything from flowers, henna, eggs (yes!), bangles, upholstery, sarees, cosmetics, plastic toys, chair, kids school items, readymade clothes, birthday party paraphernalia and so much more.
Sadly, it has gained repute not for the variety but for being cheap. Dotted are the many complexes that are lined with shops, most run by some person with the surname ‘Choudhury’. And don’t be surprised if they’ll actually compete even on wholesale prices just to cut the competitor’s business if the deal is a good one. Otherwise, since all shops claim wholesale prices, there’s no favoring the customer, nor showing him options. It’s more like take it or leave it, unless your order is a big one. It’s fun to watch women haggling in a weird combo of Hindi-Marathi that the seemingly Rajashthani chap in the shop can barely understand. Not that the goods there come really dirt cheap or that the quality is awesome, it’s just the joy of buying here that makes you feel you’ve got the best deal.

Kapileshwar temple Belagavi, is known as the Kashi of the south. There is an inscription in the Kamal Basti which suggests this temple is one of the oldest in the state and dates back to 1000 AD.
Kapileshwar Temple Belagavi
The shrine is revered as the southern equivalent of Kasi—Dakshina Kasi. It is staunchly believed that pilgrimage to Jyotirlingas, numbering 12 and scattered across India, won’t be complete without worshipping the presiding deity of this shrine. As in Kashi, the devotees are allowed close access to Shiva which gives devotees much spiritual bliss. Legend has it that the linga here was venerated by Kapila Muni and hence the name Kapileshwar. It is said that the saint worshipped Shiva by starting a fire and pouring oblations dear to Him as aahudhi.
The Shiva linga is said to be self originated—Swayambhu. There is a rare confluence of three sacred trees—banyan, peepal and ficus.
Mural paintings, depicting themes from Bhagavatam, Gajendra Moksham and Linga Purana adorn the four walls. Emancipation of Ahalya, cursed to become a stone, by the magic touch of Lord Ram’s lotus feet—a scene from the Ramayana—is depicted in sparkling colours.
Adi Sankara had visited the shrine in the 8th century. Swami Vivekananda, the champion of Hindu cause, culture and philosophy, had a darshan of the lord during his brief spiritual sojourn in Belgaum. Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi had prostrated before this lord of the world (Viswanath) in 1924. Revolutionary freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak had also visited the shrine.
Mahashivratri is celebrated in a grand fashion here— lakhs of devotees visited the shrine this time. It is festive time at the temple on Mahashivratri.

The jury is still out on whether a special day is merited for women who form a natural half of the world’s population. However, those who do appreciate, say that it at least brings to fore issues related to women’s safety, health, nutrition, her status in family and society and the many problems that she faces. A back –of- the- envelope survey in my MBA class puts my female students at difficulty to list the restrictions at home or outside. Some say it’s only the late night timings that they have to adhere back home. Some are aware they face problems, but they have found a way out. One chirpy girl said, there are restrictions, but there are also a host of things out there in the world where I can prove my mettle and achieve something. It is not the same elsewhere, education being the biggest differentiator.
Women empowerment begins at home and ends with high levels of education. It begins with the right kind of parenting where gender does not form the deciding factor for privileges like food, clothing and education. I have plenty of students whose parents have pinned hopes on their daughters rather than the son, and providing them with quality professional education in spite of great difficulties. More of such parents are needed. Daughters need to be seeded with dreams and provided the strength to dream big. I read somewhere that all parents need to provide their children is roots and wings. So true when it comes to daughters.
We, the people of Belagavi, have seen very little, if any discretion when providing for education to daughters. Exceptions do exist, but our city’s culture has enabled scores of proud daughters to complete schooling, get education and have a career. It’s another matter that there are still plenty of girls from Belagavi who willingly opt to not have a career or work. Not that career should be the sole goal in life, but then a large potential of the population stays at home, and is not part of the nation’s growth saga. I recall Ms. Soniya Netalkar narrate her experience of Japan where the government took active steps to bring this potential workforce back to the organization by providing flexi timings, plentiful maternity leaves and other policies. Perhaps the government must chip in here.
All said, financial independence brings a lot of empowerment in the true sense. Most of the domestic exploitation happens due to the woman’s dependence on the sole earning member of the family- the husband. Money, key family decisions, inheritance are some factors that women still struggle with. If the woman does not wish to venture out for earning, work must reach her home. Make her life meaningful, purposeful. Families must make it a natural course of action that the woman are consulted for key family decisions like investments, weddings, education of the kids, etc. And families alone can instill respect for women among the kids from a young age. Especially the man bears the responsibility to exemplify his respect for the wife, the mother and sister at home. Kids emulate. Good and bad. Raise a kid who has seen his father respect his mother. Who has seen him reprimand when she is not. Women empowerment is a gradual but dynamic process that begins and ends at home. Only then can we think of workplace safety, travel safety and the like.
Our city has had its share of women stalwarts in the field of education, medicine and social work. We have seen a surge in the number of women in entrepreneurship of late. This trend must flourish. Women do not want to be ‘Same’ as men, all they want is to be looked at as equals. They know they are different, they have their own strengths. They are great planners, great at handling people and strong on empathy. They make great leaders and managers. Allowing them leverage their strengths is not such a big burden, is it? Being woman is so natural. So exhilarating. And every single day, not just one. Just let her be. Let her take wings and fly. Then every day will be women’s day. And men’s day. Rather, Human’s day!

Students recognized women in honor of International Women’s Day, thanking them for their contributions to society that otherwise go unnoticed. In total, more than 10,000+ women were recognized by over 130 LEAD students across Belgaum, Raibag, Chikodi and Kudachi.
Women work without a break for their families, society, and friends all through the year. So, on IWD 2016, LEAD conducted their 3rd annual “Recognizing the Unrecognized”, where women in our society who are rarely recognized but are responsible for important work will be recognized for their contributions, such as cleaning railway stations, bus stands, picking household trash, selling vegetables etc. LEAD and LEADers believe that, without these women, our communities would come to a standstill.
The event is conducted by LEADers (undergraduate and Master’s students) from each location of LEAD that voluntarily take up the initiative to identify and appreciate these women on the occasion of International Women’s Day. After identifying these unrecognized women in their communities, the LEADers made personal visits to their homes and workplaces to thank them for their contributions and presented a certificate of gratitude they personally signed.
About LEAD: The LEAD Program of the Deshpande Foundation fosters innovative and entrepreneurial thinking within college students by exposing them to social issues, encouraging them to volunteer their time and effort in the community, and igniting their latent talent to come up with creative solutions.
