With his enterprise and enterprising skills meriting the attention of the whole country, we at AAB are proud of the fact that this entrepreneur shaped a reality from his dreams.Jack

AAB spoke to Jackbastian Nazareth on the current trends in the real estate segment:

How would you describe the Puravankara journey as an experience?

Jackbastian ——– > It has been an incredibly challenging and rewarding experience. The opportunity to lead a Rs.1200 cr. organization, with a 1016 strong workforce is a rare privilege. I shall be eternally grateful for my serendipitous good fortune.

I have grown immeasurably, as a professional and as a leader, in the process. Each year, the talent pool at Puravankara grows stronger – we have hired terrific people. Consequently, my professional interactions are engaging and enriching.

Over the years, I have come to realize that providing the forum for talent to flourish is the path to effective leadership. Our organization, indeed any organization, will only ever be as good as its people. As such, my foremost role is to enable talent to realize its potential. The weight of this formidable responsibility keeps me grounded.

When I joined Puravankara in 2010, it was a Rs. 500 cr. company – since then we have launched 17.63 million square feet of projects with a development pipeline of 28.5 million square feet, and have more than doubled our revenue. Unequivocally, this mammoth accomplishment is a credit to our people. I am thankful for their support and that of my senior management team.

On a personal note, I continue to be inspired by Mr. Ravi Puravankara’s business acumen and humbled by his graciousness. On the whole, Puravankara has been an experience of a lifetime!

In 2011 you had planned entry into Belgaum, is there any progress on the same?

Jackbastian ——– > Belgaum does not feature in our plans at this juncture, relative to other commitments. As our geographic footprint expands, I envision that we will be there before long.

You have recently been aggressive on affordable housing through subsidiary Provident Housing Ltd, how do you see this market segment growing?

Jackbastian ——– > In 2009, we established Provident Housing Ltd. in response to growing demand for affordable housing. In only 4 years, Provident has grown from a fledgling operation to a key business driver, contributing over 40% of our profits. The brand has several successful launches to its credit, and a project pipeline of over 12 million square feet.

The market potential for affordable homes is sizeable. The country’s urban population of 285 million, multiplied five times during the last 50 years. That growth trajectory is expected to continue, so that 50% of India is living in urban areas by 2030. Furthermore, an estimated 600 million people are below 24 years of age. A whole new generation of young Indians is staking a claim to home ownership, thanks to higher incomes, ensuing aspirations and easier access to mortgage finance. So the market opportunity is undeniable.

Has the slow rate of GDP, higher inflation in any way impacted the company or the real estate market on a whole?

Jackbastian ——– > India is the world’s fourth largest economy, projected to emerge as the third largest by 2025. The country will need more homes, offices, civic and infrastructure facilities to accommodate this growth. This implies a greater role for the construction and real-estate sector. Much of residential real-estate and infrastructure development will occur in and around cities. The country is already grappling with an estimated shortfall of 18 MN housing units, which means that the consumer population is growing faster than the availability of residential stock, in many parts of the nation.

Economic slowdown notwithstanding, I am optimistic about the prospects for real-estate on account of factors such as rising disposable income, growing middle class, conveniently tenured home loans, increase in nuclear families, and urbanisation.

Your view on the current Real estate market and where it is heading?

Jackbastian ——– > Owing a home is universal need that transcends socio-economic strata. The economic slowdown may have tempered consumer sentiment, but the need for a home remains unaltered. Properties that are priced right and well-located will do well, regardless of macro-economic vagaries.

While the premium segment was the catalyst of real-estate growth during the last decade, I believe that the affordable segment will fuel category growth in the coming years.

We hear of thousands of unsold properties but even then each day new projects are launched by someone what is the rationale behind this? Don’t you think there is too much of supply than the demand?

Jackbastian ——– > Yes, there is indeed a demand supply mismatch in many pockets of the country. I attribute this trend to over-zealous construction with little heed to market dynamics. It is imperative that developers leverage market intelligence capabilities and undertake comprehensive customer, competitor and micro-market analyses prior to project commencement.

Real estate prices in Belgaum have zoomed beyond comparison but the same is not in Metros, What could be the reason?

Jackbastian ——– > The metros are relatively built-up with a plethora of construction and competition, as such, exponential growth is unrealistic. Tier 1 and 2 towns such as Belgaum are untapped terrain, offering considerable potential for real-estate growth. Belgaum has several advantages including great weather and a comfortable pace of life, which makes it an attractive retirement destination. The good schools, colleges, professional institutions are an added draw-card.

What keeps you motivated?

Jackbastian ——– > To me, real-estate is not merely about buildings, it is about people. I have been in this business for over 23 years, and continue to derive indescribable satisfaction from the smiles on customer faces when they step into their homes. That exhilarating ‘moment of truth’ keeps me motivated.

And of course, there is family – my perennial source of strength and inspiration. I am the father of two wonderful boys; knowing that I have done a little bit to make the world easier for them to navigate, is the fruit of my labor.

What would you advise the youth, so that they are focused and achieve their goals in life?

Jackbastian ——– > Dare to dream and pursue it relentlessly. Hard work and perseverance invariably pay off. Life is full of trials and tribulations – through it all, stay the course and believe in yourself. Expect to fail, but have the fortitude to pick yourself up and learn from failure – indeed it is life’s great teacher.

The world is a wondrous place, be curious and always open to new ideas. Commit to ongoing learning – there is no substitute for education, and knowledge will forever be a powerful ally. Be flexible and reinvent yourself as circumstances demand.

Above all, enjoy the journey – life is passing you by, so follow your passion. Do what you love, do it to the best of your ability and the rest will follow.

Do you have any unfulfilled ambition-many, one of them?

Jackbastian ——– > Every home handed over to a proud owner, serves as reminder of the less fortunate. Someday, I hope to do my bit to restore the inequities of the world. I would derive gratification from setting up an accredited educational institute for unskilled labor, carpenters, masons and the like, in an endeavor to professionalize the trade. There is no greater shame than allowing talent to languish for want of opportunity.

I have to confess that I am a closeted teacher – when I hang up my real-estate boots, I would like to teach in a small village or town, and hopefully, inspire a new generation to achieve its dreams.

What is that you like about Belgaum?

Jackbastian ——– > Belgaum is my childhood hometown; it is the place where innumerable friends and countless memories were made. To that extent, there is no place quite like it!

What is the one thing you miss being away from Belgaum?

Jackbastian ——– > Belgaum is an integral part of my life – I will never forget my humble beginnings here. My friends, my school (St. Paul’s) my colleges (RLS, GIT), my teachers, the dabbawalla, who ferried my daily lunch, the generous attendants at the college canteen – they have all left an indelible mark. I may have moved out of Belgaum in pursuit of a career, but the city has always remained with me.

Irrespective of my life today and what the future holds, I will always be a ‘Belgaum boy’ at heart.

What are your thoughts on this website?

Jackbastian ——– > It is remarkable. You have provided a forum for people the world over to stay connected to Belgaum. I commend your initiative in taking the platform to a whole new level and facilitating social and political exchange. It is amazing to witness the transforming of news dissemination in our hometown, from conventional channels to this modern platform. Thanks to you, Belgaum has arrived!

Sundi water falls near Belgaum attracts tourists

sundiBelgaum is nestled between nature and we are very lucky to be so near to nature. In the monsoons there are many places that can be a great spot for a trip.

The Sundi water falls has water falling from about 50 feet and the sight is awesome. The water depth near the falls is not much hence one can play in the water as well. But be careful as there are huge stones and going to such falls in the monsoons could be a hard time as the water level can rise suddenly due to heavy flow of water.

Even trekking can be done and this falls could be covered as a day trip along with Vaijnath & Mahipalgad.

As these places are not developed one needs to carry along all the food and potable water.

Distance from Belgaum: 27kms

Best season: Monsoons upto December

How to Reach:

From Hindalga Ganapati—-> Sulga—> Shinoli —> Take right Turn to Devaravadi—-> Sri Kshetra Vaijanath——> Mahipalgadh ——-> Sundi Village

Stop your vehicles near the make shift Tea shop and take a Right turn into the fields.

Walk for less than a km through the fields.

Go down the hill on a somewhat difficult terrain with stones (water bed) to see Sundi Falls.

Tushar Patil- No city grows on IT alone

DSC01332Tushar Patil as Managing director is responsible for the vision, strategy and leadership that drives BTP InfoServe Pvt. Ltd. (BTPI)

After completing masters from Kansas University, he worked in the US for 3 years at Alpha Soft Services. During this tenure, he gained access to various service segments in the US including healthcare, insurance and finance. His experience also helped him identify the non-core business segments there and plan to outsource the same to BTPI. He has the task at BTPI to help business segments concentrate on their core strengths and to bridge the link that correlates clients’ expectations v/s BTPI deliverables.

Way back in 2002 Tushar started BTP InfoServe Pvt. Ltd. (BTPI) in Belgaum, which specializes in American medical insurance claims processing.
Tushar did his schooling from St.Paul’s High school, then GSS college and then GIT.
AAB spoke to Tushar on the current trends in the industry:

How would you describe the BTPi journey as an experience?

Tushar Patil ——> This is our 9th year we started out with 1 person and today we have a dedicated workforce of 80 associates. It has been a wonderful journey so far filled with hardships and dedication. We have amazing people working for us since inception. Since our operations are small but highly targeted and regimented, there is no fear of competition in our niche industry. The primary challenge within an organization is to keep maintaining the excellent performance standards irrespective of any hassles one may have to suffer. Having experienced the bitter realities of uncertain economic conditions, organisations are more vigilant about their compensation policies and the same holds good for us too. With the economic environment changing in the blink of an eye, compensation policies need to be reframed regularly.tushar

Has anything drastically changed since 2009 we first interviewed you with respect to this sector?

Tushar Patil ——> Yes, The IT industry itself has faced a few challenges; part of it was policy based ones (quote the tax benefit withdrawal of STPI etc).  The other challenge is to sustain the attrition rate in Belgaum. To understand this phenomenon, we need to look at Industries as a whole and not just the IT industry. Primarily IT industry is dependent on large pool of manpower, skill based and non skill based. The today’s generation sees Bangalore and Pune as the only hubs as and when they graduate. There aren’t much choices in the field a person specializes for ex: A Graduate coming out of a college (any pool science or arts or commerce) will first explore his options in Belgaum and the options are limited. How many jobs are available for Engineers in Belgaum, how many industries are on a lookout for graduates every year in Belgaum, if we analyze this we are bound to find that diversity within the options is lacking. How many IT firms in Belgaum hire Software Professionals on long term basis in Belgaum.

The answer to all of the above is limited number of vacancies at any given point of time.  The others venture out to PUNE and Bangalore. They in turn lure their colleagues and friends out with referrals etc and owing to the METRO appeal we see this brain-drain situation. This entire cycle needs to be catered to not just IT industry because all are inter-related and thus it is essential for any industrial setup to have diversification within them to cater to this wide variety of resources.

BTP or any XYZ company alone can’t cater to such variety and thus the cluster of industries becomes the need of the hour. Each industry feeds-off from the other. Right now, all industries in Belgaum have become stepping stones for ones going out to Bangalore and Pune. i.e they get experience and work exposure and then head out to METROS.

w.r.t BTPI: Business models have indeed changed for us, and we have got to get better at them. But we need to operate at healthy margins because investment will become very critical because of the emergence of new technologies. I can’t tell whether or not we will grow at 30% on a YOY basis for the next three years, but I can assure that the initial target of having 200 headcount will surely be achieved by 2016 barring any major slump.

Dearth of skilled manpower was the main issue then, is there any improvement in this ?

Tushar Patil ——> As stated above, dearth of skilled manpower is an issue but mostly all of them will be solved if we could make sure enough options available for the talent pool coming out of colleges each year in Belgaum and nearby towns. Every year there is campus recruitment done by INFOSYS and other firms but not everyone gets placed. The question is how many of them left behind are absorbed by the local companies?

The slowing economy and sliding rupee has this put any impact on your work?

Tushar Patil ——> It does add a bit of pressure on margins but not much in terms of great impact on our deliverables or overall productivity. Because though weakness in rupee might be a boon in one hand (i.e dollar conversion rates get better) the other side of this is inflation at alarming levels and retention becomes an issue too. So in all it’s neither a blessing nor a curse.

How do you see the healthcare segment growing? And are there been any new addons to this segment lately?

Tushar Patil ——> The healthcare as always has remained mostly recession proof. However, the major challenge in this profession is to constantly evolve to understand, embrace and implement new ideas, development and technical adaptability at various levels (from executive level to managerial level) becomes very important. The add-ons and other aspects are all by-products of this. Yes there are enough add-ons we are looking into but they do require some more time before finalizing.  (Ex: We are in a process of marketing our product which will help our clients in maintaining and managing their daily trip logs, standing orders etc).

There are enough verticals one can think of “catering to” in this segment.  Since most of them are in process, it would be too early to shed more light on them as of now.

Has the health care vertical been fully immune to the slowdown?

Tushar Patil ——> Both yes and no, in the sense its immune from practical slowdown but at the same time there are other aspects of this industry which feed-off from other industries and that bit gets effected (ex. Rupee sliding impact on our economy). But to a large extent it has remained immune and recession proof. However, such external factors do force us to see at various other measures like cost-cutting, relieving people with less skill whereas in an ideal world we would like to keep them on board.

BPO in Belgaum? Your experiences

Tushar Patil ——> BPO in general has slowly started to come-of-age in Belgaum. The improvement on a 10 year scale might show you good growth but over the past few years its been more of survival than thriving with the current infrastructural and other inadequacies (Ex air connectivity, internet spread over limited area etc).  I reiterate no city has grown on IT alone (Bangalore included), it’s a combination of overall development in infrastructure and other industries which will help IT industry. Ex. Mangalore wasn’t an IT hub before but from 2000 to 2011 the IT growth in Mangalore is more compared to any other city in Karnataka barring Mysore.

Ex: I do get enquiries from people who have left belgaum to Bangalore but want to return to belgaum and find it difficult because of the constraints second tier cities bring (i.e exact job not available, salary, perks etc etc).

Your thoughts on the human resource talent in and around Belgaum?

Tushar Patil ——> There is a lot of potential but with gaps in skill ecosystem. Ex. Not all graduates coming out of an engineering college are industry-ready. Few may be market ready but lacking in business skills and analytical skills etc.  The problem with this is the cost involved for delivery of skills is increasing and there are not enough budgetary resources to sustain this delivery once they get recruited in any firm.

Generally, though we see lots of improvement compared to 2009 when we last spoke about it, so something might have been working right.

What do you think of the IT Park planned near Desur and also one more by KEONICS in Hindalga?

Tushar Patil ——> I welcome such initiatives. But also would like to add that my personal experience is that there is a lot of IT initiatives taken at times but generally speaking decision cycles are long in India and Specifically in North Karnataka it’s the longest. However, let us just hope that many such initiatives would at least provide the alternative employment sources to youth in belgaum and thereby yield to a better resource of manpower which can be tapped upon by various industries. One also needs to wonder why a company like Infosys puts up a branch in Mangalore but not in Belgaum or any other city in North Karnataka. Obviously they do hire enough people from North Karnataka region via campus interviews then why not set up an office in Hubli or Belgaum to cater and tap the potential, isn’t it a food for thought? At the same time lets not get too pessimistic about this. We have come a long way from the days when we used to struggle to have one good ISP provider way back in 2002. So, let us see this IT PARK initiative as a silver lining and believe that we have almost reached the end of the tunnel and its time for seeing daylight.

How do you foresee Belgaum’s future for the IT and BPO?

Tushar Patil ——> As stated earlier a well planned initiative is a must something like a SEZ (special economic zone) would be a pathbreaker. Venture capitalists will find it attractive option then, once we see improvement in this regard, we can rest assure that ITES and all other related service industry will comeback to the fore.

I must admit that AAB’s initiative, is a very vital contribution in spreading awareness about the current IT state in these parts. With Patience, commitment and the drive to deliver we can achieve what we set to achieve initially.

Why doesn’t anyone care about me

Thousands of people throng at me and travel to their destinations day in and day out. For so many years I have been bridging the gap between urban and rural. It may be any season of the year, but for me my priority is set, serve thy countrymen.

When I was made years back I was the main landmark people used to assign. But now my importance has been ablated. If you want blame it on my owners or people running the show.

Do you know by now who I am? I am CBT, Central Bus stand.cbt2

People landing in Belgaum are welcomed to the wonderful odor and this gives a lasting impression of the city, but I am helpless. Many plans were made for my revival but nothing concrete has happened with me. Very lately on this very site I had read that NWKRTC had planned to revamp me completely and tenders were floated in 2009 but Nobody came forward bid for my development on BOT basis.cbt1

A new BOT plan is being developed let us see if there are any takers for this at least or no.

Today I am with the same space and area and handling more passengers and buses than I can handle which is causing a lot of jams within my area itself. Belgaum has grown many a folds but I have not grown, I am still the same built years ago. No one even cares to repair the roads. Each one in the bus has to bounce and once the bouncing starts be sure your in Belgaum and if the bouncing is at a higher level you are at the CBT.

Not much care is being taken currently as my owners say I would have to go one day, I am so helpless when I see women and children alighting from the bus in the rains and they have no shed.

About 2500+ two wheelers are parked everyday and even this space is now not sufficient for parking and commuters there as well are not happy with me.

Till something is done to improve me I am helpless, kindly bear with me.”

Leena Bokil-A Stellar Journey

by Sameer Majli

Leena Bokil pune belgaumSpace Advocate, a science enthusiast and a hard-core Science Communicator, emerging to become a future space leader! She is a multifaceted, young and a dynamic achiever! She is a role model for many youngsters and her students. Yet for her – KALPANA CHAWLA is an icon and a role model. She wishes to continue the legacy of this legendary icon when it comes to space travel… and to top it all, she is one amongst us that made a reality of her dreams.
Meet Leena Bokil.

A student of Divine Providence and an Engineer from Gogte Institute of Belgaum, an achiever, an inspiration and a role model when it come defying convention to embrace one’s dreams.

These are little insights into this wonderful person, stuff that was revealed when ALL ABOUT BELGAUM interviewed her.

What made you break convention and choose such a different career?

Leena Bokil ———— > I’m basically an E&TC Engineer by qualification. But then, I’ve always aspired to be an Astrophysicist. And pure science has been my ‘cup of tea’!

Since childhood, I’ve secretly been planning to be a ‘star gazer’. And then, since ages, I was aiming to ‘reach out to the stars’ as well! But then, in India, it’s not easy to get into such a unique field like Astronomy or Space Science. Besides, since my Dad is an Engineer (Mech+Elec), it was but natural for me, to enter into the engineering arena. And believe me, it was indeed a ‘cake-walk’, with all his guidance and relentless support. My father would tell me ancient tales of Copernicus and Kepler; and stories of Galileo and others who were the first-generation astronomers. So all of this fueled up a spark in me and inspired me to become a Space Scientist one day!

Well, I’ve been teaching telecommunications engineering for many years now, since it’s my core-branch. However, at the same time, I wanted to do something ‘out-of-the-box’! And then, well, I waited patiently until I was offered a teaching assignment for ‘Avionics’ course. So, I took it up as a challenge and read a lot of stuff. And then, gradually soared higher into ‘space technology’.
I mean, NASA happened to me since I’m an Educator. And after a ‘low profile’ job for almost a decade, I literally rose ‘like a real skyscraper’! I got selected at NASA-Honeywell Space Educators’ Program in 2008. And then, I became the Founder Secretary of National Space Society (India). So, in the last 5 years, I’ve visited various NASA’s centers, as many as five times! This way, I earned a global recognition, thanks to NASA, America’s premier space agency.

What were the challenges you faced in your journey to understand things beyond the blue skies?

Leena Bokil ———— > Well, it’s quite a challenging profession for women. And then there’s immense competition… Besides, a married woman like me, needs to juggle and balance with family and career. But then, ever since I gained ‘momentum’, things became pretty easy for me, and life is great these days!

Ok, to become a NASA astronaut, one needs to be an American citizen, first and foremost. But then, there is soon going to be a ‘Space Ambassador Program’; and being a Teacher, it can be relatively easy to be into such missions for me. That’s because, a Teacher inspires the future generation of astronauts and space technologists. This is precisely why NASA selected me to be trained for this coveted space training program @ Marshall Center in Huntsville, Alabama. I keep meeting Astronauts like Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins and others. Plus, Cosmonaut – Rakesh Sharma ji is a great source of inspiration for me! And when I do meet such legendary personalities, my energies get a boost! After meeting these iconic people, complex things start looking pretty simple! So, it’s all about getting inspired as much as being an inspiration, myself!

Who do you attribute your success to?

Leena Bokil ———— > Many aspects like : my genetic material, grooming and above all, my father’s technical training have always motivated me to be a true and dedicated technologist. I’m so much like my Father, I just need ‘work’ on my desk and I don’t care for the money! I just keep on going ‘with the flow’ and put in my best, in whatever I do!

I guess, success comes to those who work with a strong purpose and popularizing science has now become a mission in my life. Besides, I’ve always done whatever I’ve believed in. Well, except my father and my mentor, I do not listen to others, as far as my career is concerned. I just work for myself and compete with my own self. Oh, I so enjoy my work and do it with a passion; so all of this makes it more meaningful and complete…

Is it necessary for an individual to seek education abroad to make a career in space research and technology?

Leena Bokil ———— > Well yes, in India, we do not include ‘space science’ as a part of the regular curriculum. Besides, we do not have much in terms of resources for this particular ‘hi-tech’ course. So, one needs to go abroad to study space technology. However, they do offer ‘B.Tech. degree’ in Space Engg @ IIST these days. The Indian Institute of Space Technology (IIST) is an integral part of ISRO, and it has been undertaking the task of grooming and nurturing space engineers, for the past few years.

The youngsters find our Indian scenario quite disturbing and they choose to go abroad for better prospects. There are far better facilities, resources and funding in the western world, when it comes to research ventures. However, in the present times, many Indian research organizations are working towards projects and funding, in order to encourage young researchers to join them.

What has been your greatest accomplishment in your journey?

Leena Bokil ———— > Firstly, my beloved Father, Shri S.S. Kulkarni, and then my teachers, have played an incredible role in shaping my career. And then, of late, my mentor, eminent scientist – Dr Gowariker sir, has been a great guide for me. His mere encouragement makes me ‘raise the bench-mark’, each time, at every step in my career. And then, I’ve learnt a great deal from NASA Astronaut – late Kalpana Chawla. I never got to meet her, but then, I keep meeting her father – revered Paapaji, who shares many aspects about ‘KC’ and her life. This way, I’m blessed that I’ve been meeting the greatest icons for the last few years. And then, I’ve been getting the opportunity of ‘going places’. So for me, all these parameters are the resultants of success. And according to me, these are a few of my modest accomplishments…

What lies ahead in terms of what you seek to accomplish in your field of interest?

Leena Bokil ———— > Well, so far, I’ve not yet reached the crest (peak) of my career. So, to take my unique career to it’s culmination, I look forward to ‘going into space’, at least once, in my life-time! And then, of course, I may ‘pen’ my experiences or, say, may be, even write a ‘science fiction’ in these years to come…

“Ambition is never content, even at the summit of greatness.”

                                                                     ~ Napolean Bonaparte

How do you manage being a multi-faceted and multi-talented personality?

Leena Bokil ———— > Oh well, I’ve just traveled a lot and picked up some languages. I keep myself widely read and I’m eclectic, I guess. So that’s what I do in my free time, read and watch movies! I owe it to my creativity, that springs from ‘left-handedness’ or my ‘right-brain dominance’.

I guess, I’m a born communicator and I’m quite good at some sports as well. So I keep myself fit and maintain a fair amount of daily discipline. The major source of inputs for me are by way of traveling. And it’s truly an education for me, to meet people across the globe, of different cultures and varied race… I accord more importance to learning from ‘nature’ than from the books! This way, I’ve been a perpetual student all my life…

Well, it would be unbecoming of me if I do not appreciate the efforts of my parents, teachers and institution, in making me what I am today. Above all, I’d also be dishonest if I say I’ve not been ‘lucky’!

“Creativity and imagination are more important than knowledge and information.”

                                                                                ~Albert Einstein

How does it feel to be a Belgaumite and to be in the domain of space research?

Leena Bokil ———— > My schooling in Divine Providence Convent was perfect and Belgaum is a great place for grooming! The top-notch-quality of education and resources that we do get here are of world-class grade! I do not ever rate Belgaum as a ‘small town’. In fact it’s far better than many other places that I’ve ever seen. It’s the mind-set that’s needed for growth and not how large or small a city is… Besides the pleasant climatic conditions, Belgaum is by far, a great place to be in! Well, it was only after marriage that I settled down in Pune, and it was not for career prospects. We do have all the ace facilities out here! And since Belgaum is geographically close to Pune and to Bangalore as well, many people move to these cities for jobs.

Well, as for Space Education and Research domain, it has given me an impetus to become well-known, since it is a popular science. Plus, I’m told I’m known across the globe, thanks to my NASA training!

I reiterate what late Kalpana Chawla once said from space : “I do not belong to one small part of the world. But the entire Universe is my homeland.”

Likewise, the vast Universe is my home, yet my roots are in Belgaum. And in this precise way, I choose to stay grounded! Blessed am I that I am born to this noble land! My soil and my native land will always remain to be in Belgaum, since this is my ‘Janmabhoomi’… And Pune or ‘Punyanagari’ is my ‘Karmabhoomi’…

What are your views about and your suggestions for All About Belgaum?

Leena Bokil ———— > Through Facebook, I got connected to ‘All About Belgaum’, and I’m proud to be associated with it! Of course, this way, I stay connected with ‘my roots’ and I’m updated with all the latest info about my hometown. So it’s enriching and it always brings a ‘smile on my face’ when I read AAB! I am glad it’s operating successfully for so many years, and I’m marveled at the enthusiasm of the team-AAB! I appreciate the response that it evokes in all Belgaumites, from far and wide. I congratulate them for keeping it so fresh and ever-updated! Thanks a ton, for keeping us so connected, no matter wherever we’re located on this planet, or even in space…

Is there anything that you would like to get across to students using our platform?

Leena Bokil ———— > Oh yes, of course, I would always like to inspire my folks and especially the younger generation, to choose what they believe in; to pursue their dreams and accomplish them… Through this platform, we could create awareness and open up avenues for the youngsters of Belgaum. We could encourage them to join ISRO, our very own Space Agency or go to NASA or ESA, and so on… Of course, I could share my experience as also the information that I’ve gathered in the past few years. And AAB could invite the student+teacher community to join in and augment the activities!

All said and done, no matter what, the ‘spirit of exploration’ must not fade away.

Bus shelters soon in Belgaum

busshleterThere was a long pending demand of the citizens for bus shelters. Currently only a handful of bus shelters are there in the city. Travelers always had a hard time standing in the sun and then now in the rain in the open waiting for the city buses. Also the problem of buses stopping anywhere as per the wish of the driver also was a nightmare for the travelers.

The City corporation has floated tender for Supply and Installation of stainless steel railing Bus Shelter in Vadagaon, Old Belgaum Naka, Angol Harimandir, RPD Cross Tilakwadi, Basaveshwar Circle Goaves, Gogte Circle, Camp Petrol Pump, Shivaji Nagar, Ashok Circle & Channamma Circle (Ambedkar Road), within Belgaum City limit.

The total value of the tender is Rs.29,00,000.
Hence each shelter would be worth Rs.2,90,000 [10 bus shelters]
The bids would be opened 06/08/2013 and the time for completion after the issue of work order is 3 months.

We hope this is implemented at the earliest as seen in the images of the tender the bus shelters would be up in 3 months and serve the citizens.

Sorry state of Belgaum Central bus stand

bijapur_bgmbusstandFirst Impression is the Last Impression. The first thing that catches your eye when you look at a city is its Central bus stand (CBT), from where normally the visitors land. CBT can be also termed as the front office of an organization in most cases and thus, the first impression your city has on a visitor entirely depends on your front office, in this the Central bus stand.

And the pitying state of Belgaum CBT is alarming and no one is bothered to look into this which adds to the apathy of the visitors and travelers.

You are welcomed with a wonderful odour at the entrance which actually gives you a sense of what is in store for you.
Once you get down from the bus you will have to find land where you can step on and move out of it. Currently the entire bus stand is full of potholes and an estimates says there must be atleast thousands of potholes of various sizes and depth.
The redevelopment plan of the bus stand has been shifting its tables/offices but no improvement what so ever on the ground.
Many small towns have wonderful complete concrete bus stand. Take Bijapur for that matter, the entire bus stand is concreted and look at Belgaum.
Why is there so much of apathy towards Belgaum from the policy makers and one who implement them is hard to understand.
If the Bijapur stand cane be concreted then why not even Belgaum?
Maybe it is time, for each development the citizens will have to come forward and ask hard questions to the policy makers.
