Ajanta Cafe-50 & Going Strong

ajanta_cafe_belgaum

by Sameer Majli

Some places are synonymous with the memories associated with them. When the memory is a taste, it takes the pleasure right to the heart. Almost like “Mom’s Cooking” till its replaced with the alter ego of “Wife’s Cooking”, in life.

Today is a day to remember for a super tasty reason. It’s a day to commemorate the special occasion of what is one of the most popular eateries in town, “Ajanta Cafe”. The place today celebrates 50 years of service to the appetites of the citizens of Belgaum. While many others have come and gone or shifted to other ventures, the culinary journey of this wonderful place continues. Generations of Belgaumites have indulged in the wonderful offerings of Ajanta Cafe at Huns Talkies road and with another branch that’s come up at Tilakwadi, the pleasure has been extended to suit the convenience and palates of a greater number of citizens who seek a quick dip into some wonderful offerings dished out by the trusted old name that has become synonymous with quality food.ajanta_belgaum

We at All About Belgaum and on behalf of the citizens of Belgaum would like to congratulate the Sherigar Family on the proud accomplishment. We hope that the magical cooking continues for ages to come as we seek our own share of the wonderful “Puri Bhaji”, “Misal”, “Idli”, “Dahi Wada” and “Masala Dosa”.

What began as a simple venture, a brain child and commitment of one person, has today extended down to another generation as the committed family continues their tasty service to the citizens of Belgaum.

The best way to celebrate, we guess, would be to just drop in and taste the stuff all over again. The trusted old joint guarantees the same taste, hygiene and quality that have been symbolic of its presence in town over the ages. It’s a place and experience that we all could be happy about and proud of. It symbolizes the wonderful things that are representatives of “All About Belgaum”.

Citizens for Society Belgaum

citizensBy Sameer Majli
It has been a while since I started writing for All About Belgaum and have covered a variety of issues that merit attention. Some have been liked and maybe some ignored but the truth remains. This wonderful part of the world, along with its pleasantries, also has a lot of issues that merit attention. Since attention on part of the duly designated and least concerned authorities seems far from being a reality and since most of the issues remain mere publications, it is time that we find a way out and try and do our bit. It’s time for an initiative, something that we all must do together.

It is with this thought in mind that “Citizens for Society” was born. We are a group of individuals from various backgrounds and professions who got together, courtesy “All About Belgaum” and “Facebook”, to try and form a communion of sorts. The objective is to draw attention to and do something for the burning issues and needs of people and places in and around town.
Citizens for Society which commences operations in August 2013 will commence proceedings by making noteworthy contributions to education in town. The task is to improve the infrastructure, facilities and educational interventions in small vernacular medium schools in town. One of the primary objectives is to prepare the students for collegiate education through perspective development and training in the use of English as a medium of communication. The task would also involve activities aimed at providing a better exposure and training to the faculty at the various schools. The organization seeks to go beyond mere monetary contributions and aspires to make a more holistic change in the way education is imparted in the vernacular medium schools. We invite followers of AAB to share their ideas and concerns regarding issues pertaining to specific schools if they know of any.1
The members of the organization would conduct awareness campaigns to highlight other issues pertaining to sanitation, healthcare, pollution and the development of civic sense and social concern.
Citizens for Society seeks to reach out to every individual who is committed and concerned about the happenings in society and we aspire to include a large number of individuals from various backgrounds and professions on a platform characterized by equality of individuals and transparency of operations.
Future plans of the organization include making contributions to healthcare, geriatric care and the all-important task of instilling the philosophy of social concern and civic sense.
We are proud to be associated with All About Belgaum as our media partner as we seek to reach out to Belgaumites and non-Belgaumites across the globe to muster enough numbers and strength to make our bit of difference in this sweet part of the blue planet.
People who are interested in joining hands for a cause are requested to get in touch with

Girish spoke to AAB about his academy and his future plans:

Girish Kamanuri Belgaum

Girish Kamanuri

When did you start your dance career and how did you think of this field?

Girish Kamanuri ——> Dance career started in Bangalore in 2003, when I reached Bangalore to study diploma in pharmacy, with the studies I started participating in inter college dance competitions, after attending many competitions I met Mr. Rojor Manathor (on 8 dance company choreographer) in a competition itself. Later he trained me with contemporary, hip hop new school dancing and b-boying.
The First opportunity to perform was given by Nupur Gandhekar and Sagar Girme(on8 dance company proprietor)

Who inspired you to get into dancing? And how was the support from the family?

Girish Kamanuri ——> My Dancing inspiration from the moment I met Mr. Rojor Manathor (guru) has been him only to lead me in dance with including studies. My family was supportive but similar middle class attitude, first complete your studies and then dancing etc.

Do you have any unfulfilled ambition-many,one of them?
Girish Kamanuri ——> I continued dancing along with studies for six years, I then completed even degree in pharmacy. But my love for Dance was my passion.zerog3

Modern westernized dances are enjoying an unprecedented popularity. They have a mass hysteria. Your thoughts?

Girish Kamanuri ——> Modern dancing is having huge impact on everyone in India, but I learnt in a dance company where ancient things will be thought first and then the present generation dance forms…. so I believe all the dance forms have the equal priority.

What are the future plans of your dance studio?
Girish Kamanuri ——> Future plans with my Zero G dance company Belgaum is to create a movie with all the students whom I thought dancing, so that people from Belgaum understand the way of working with the dance education.

 Any memorable performance

Girish Kamanuri ——> All India contemporary dance tour with on8 dance company in the year 2011 for two month performance in 28 major cities in India  was my memorable performance for the social cause STOP FEMALE FOETICIDe and then in 2012 May 22nd performed in London at Dominion theatre representing India for the cause SAVE HUMANITY.

Your thoughts on the upcoming talent in Belgaum how can one groom oneself being here.

Girish Kamanuri ——> In Belgaum there are lots of potential to build a dance company in an international way, example is – there are students who are learning from me from past one year and now they are ready to participate in all India championships.

Performance at JNMC

Performance at JNMC

Dance forms you teach are not so very common, then why did you choose them?

Girish Kamanuri ——> I chose contemporary dance to learn because it can enact a story very well when compared to western other dance forms. Hence I decided that even new generation style is also important to learn and one needs to be versatile and hence I chose hip hop new school dancing and b-boying as well which goes well with Contemporary style.

What is the best thing about Belgaum you like?

Girish Kamanuri ——> The best thing of Belgaum I like is the strength and the capacity to adopt fast when compared to metro city urban people.

What are your thoughts on this website?

Girish Kamanuri ——> My thoughts on this website is a great. Where people are gathered at one place and announcing a great inspirational things can bring someone upfront and can create a big thing in a small place.

Shame of potholed roads

This is an annual, unfailing occurrence, and there didn’t seem to be a solution in sight. Roads filled with potholes and the reason why they are there now seems to be different.

May be its is natures saying ‘Slow down’ in this fast paced life which can have adverse affects on the human soul, so put on your brakes first.
If one tries to count the potholes on a road, we found about 100+ potholes in a 100 mtrs road on Congress road.
In this era of branding and making use of any such opportunity this is a great place to give the citizens and free roller coaster ride and dancing practice for free.

belgaum

Congress road Same Congress road Military Mahadev Junction over the years

We have already accepted these potholes to be a part of our society and an inherent portion of life in Belgaum. Take any road in the city, all have potholes, a few have more and few less, but their existence is inevitable.
The best part is the authorities dont even want to fill the same with stones and give some first aid treatment, infact they feel may be the citizens must enjoy the rains and also the potholes and the roller coaster ride. Maybe we can have a Super dancer from Belgaum the next season and again thanks to the potholes.
A lady died in Mumbai after she tried to avoid a pothole, but the Police have filed a FIR against the deceased lady for negligence and not wearing a helmet.
And I hope the contractor who built the road will be awarded later by the elected representatives who are in reality the representatives of the citizens but they normally represent the other side.
What has happened in Mumbai can happen here as well and the thing that we are all used to live with potholes is a reality.

Shops in basement are illegal

The shop owners of the various shops in the basements from the city met DC Jayram yesterday to ask him to stop the eviction process of their shops initiated by the Corporation.

Most of the shop owners said that they were forced to take shops in basement after their shops were demolished in the road widening in Khade Bazar, Maruti Galli etc.

However the DC said that rules are rules and due to shops in basement there is a severe parking problem in the city and termed these shops as illegal.

MLA Sambhaji Patil who also accompanied the delegation assured of a solution.

What the building bylaws say:

Basement floor

a) Basement floors shall not be used for purposes other than parking and for locating

machines used for service and utilities of buildings.

b) Strong rooms only in case of bank buildings. The area to be used for this purpose

shall be reckoned for FAR purposes.

c) Installation of Radiology and X ray equipment only in case of Hospital buildings

having a capacity of more than 50 beds without office. The area to be used for this

purpose shall be reckoned for FAR purposes.

As per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act 1976, Section 32 (1), a provisional order is issued asking building owners to vacate the basement area. Seven days later, if the basement is not free for parking, a confirmatory order is issued and authorities can start demolition or eviction of the shops.
