Remembering John Fernandes the Master of Realism-Impressionism

The Late John is considered to be one of the finest painters to come out of India, whose stature within students and scholars of representational art is unequaled, and rightfully so.

His works are indeed rare, and remarkable further that those that have been fortunate enough to acquire them over the years, do not easily part with the works that were acquired by some of the country’s finest art collectors.

It is, in fact, a rarity to even have the privilege to gaze eye upon a John Fernandes artwork, such has been the exclusivity by which his works have been shown to the public.

John Fernandes, was an artist par excellence, is considered by many to be one of the finest realist Indian painters. Learned under the tutelage of the Late KB Kulkarni from Belagavi, he worked as a full-time artist for more than 25 years.

John is one of the famous Indian oil painting artists who have hands in almost all medium-pencil, charcoal, watercolors, etc. For 9 years he studied art in Chitra Mandir under the guidance of his teacher Shri K B Kulkarni. He owned an exceptional grasp of lines, contours, light and shadow, forms and tones and tints.

His journey as an artist started from Belagavi when he was brought to Shri. K. B. Kulkarni’s art classes by his elder brother. John’s inborn talent made him a quick student, needing only subtle suggestions from his teacher

His grasp of line, form and color tones was something exceptional. He learned drawing from nature, from memory, and from live models, using the medium of pencils, charcoal, crayons, watercolors, and oils with equal ease. John’s paintings encapsulate with great skill, the sensual female form, rendered with a rare delicacy and sensitivity. His figurative paintings left one enthralled by the provocative and yet sensually innocent look of his women. Besides figurative studies, he also painted landscapes and still life with equal compositional and tonal skills. Be it watercolors or oils, John’s disciplined and confident handling of his subjects, left the definitive stamp of a master artist.

Pencil drawings were his forte, a love which he said – “He has inherited from his Sir K. B. Kulkarni”. Be it watercolors or oils, John’s disciplined and confident handling of his subjects, leave a definite stamp, which says, “This is John!”

The paintings of women enthralled the audience by the provocative appeal and yet reveal the innocence of the women in his figurative paintings. John owned a remarkable discipline and confidence in handling his subjects and mediums which revealed his signature style.

John FernandesJohn FernandesJohn FernandesThe caressing drapery, its translucence, the movement of the body, the definite and defining strokes of light, the control of mass and light and shade, the depth, are what make a John Fernandes painting stand out.

His wife Agnes, who organizes his exhibition, said, “His passion for painting was so great that he wouldn’t eat, drink or sleep. I see him in his paintings, I don’t feel he has gone at all.”

John during his last days had asked his wife to set up an Art gallery in Belagavi his home town so that the local talent can be nurtured better and he said this is what I can give back to the place where I learned to move the brushes.

In fact, John wanted to come back to Belagavi and stay here at his home and enjoy painting but destiny had other things for him.

Now his Wife is fulfilling his dream of the art gallery at his bungalow in Sangameshwar Nagar. A full-fledged art gallery has been created and local artists can work there and also exhibit their artworks.

The first exhibition will be held at the Late John Fernandes Gallery at Plot No.1 & 2 Sangameshwar Nagar 10th Cross, Belagavi from October 13 to 20, 10 AM to 6 PM.

Noted artist from Ichalkaranji Dilip Dudhane will exhibit his paintings. Dilip has won many accolades to his name and also restored many paintings of Late John Fernandes.

Be Alert; Joint Pains, Stiffness, swelling, morning stiffness could be ARTHRITIS.

By DR.ARCHANA M.UPPIN
What is arthritis?

Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. It can affect one joint or multiple joints. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, with different causes and treatment methods. Two of the most common types are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Arthritis is not an old age disease though most commonly seen in adults over the age of 65 years; it can also develop in children, teens, and younger adults. Arthritis is more common in women than men and in people who are obese.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

Joint pain, stiffness, swelling, decreased range of motion at the joints are the most common symptoms. Many people with arthritis notice their symptoms are worse in the morning and feel better as the day progresses. Some forms of arthritis-like RA, SLE(Lupus), Scleroderma, Sjogren’s can affect multiple organs of the body like eyes, lungs, heart, gastrointestinal system and can be life-threatening.

What causes arthritis?

Normal wear and tear cause Osteoarthritis (OA), one of the most common forms of arthritis. An infection or injury to the joints can worsen this natural breakdown of cartilage tissue. Your risk of developing OA may be higher if you have a family history of the disease. Another common form of arthritis, RA, is an autoimmune disorder. It occurs when your body’s immune system attacks the tissues of the body. Researchers are still trying to find out why a person’s immune system starts attacking the healthy joints of the body. Some postulates about the causes of rheumatoid arthritis include environmental factors such as smoking, periodontitis (a dental condition), genetic and hormonal issues.

How is Arthritis Diagnosed

Symptoms of Arthritis take time to develop and the initial signs are joint ache, swelling and stiffness. Patients may also feel fatigued. Consult a Rheumatologist who, with the help of your medical history, X-rays, physical and laboratory tests will diagnose.

arthritisHow is arthritis treated?

Since Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder, curing it completely is still unlikely. Hence, the following approach is used by doctors to provide maximum comfort and relief to the patients: Slowing down inflammation and swelling with the help of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine, sulphasalazine are some of the options. In patients who don’t respond to the above line newer drugs called BIOLOGICS can be used. Research has shown that having tight control over rheumatoid arthritis can prevent further damage to the joints. It has also shown that the SOONER the treatment is begun after the diagnosis, the lesser the joint damage, deformities and in turn disabilities can be prevented.

Contrary to popular belief, steroids are used only for a short period, particularly for quick response and restoration of function. Most patients don’t need steroids. Non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed for pain relief.

Surgery is advised to rheumatoid arthritis patients who have permanently damaged their joints and have decreased or hindered mobility.

Joint and hip replacement surgeries are commonly done, but surgery can be performed on any dysfunctional joint. It is extremely important that patients keep themselves physically active, or else immobility can set in quickly.

Daily exercises such as walking, yoga or swimming are recommended. Weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight reduce the risk of developing OA and can reduce symptoms if you already have a diet with lots of antioxidants, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs can help reduce inflammation, other inflammation-reducing foods are fish and nuts.

Minimize fried /processed foods. Lowering physical and mental stress is important.

Due to the nature of the disease and as there is no cure for the disease it is quite a challenge for patients and caregivers to lead an uninterrupted everyday life. It is a leading cause of disability in adulthood. Hence, frequent visits to the doctor, the right treatment, an active lifestyle and learning about the disease are crucial. While there’s no cure for arthritis, the right treatment can greatly reduce your symptoms and improve the quality of life.

This incident has been shared from near Mujawar arcade (11-10-19) where a Police constable is seen snatching away a mobile of a citizen while he was trying to shoot the video. Eyewitnesses say his bike was picked up by the towing van as it was parked in no parking while another version is that he wasn’t wearing a helmet and he was using the mobile while driving, but in the articulation that happened the Traffic Constable, it looks like snatched the mobile which is visible.

Commissioner of Police Belagavi City is this fair? the person in an argument may be wrong or right we can’t decide. But do the Constables have a right to snatch the mobile?
The traffic cops were given Body cameras some time ago to record such incidents only that occur, but we never see anyone wearing the body cameras.

Belagavi city: smart or dumb

$
0
0

It is several years since Belagavi was selected to become a smart city but in reality, it seems to be becoming dumber by the day. Indore city has become the cleanest city in India in a few years all due to the right decision s of the mayor s and commissioner s mainly because of segregation of waste which is picked from door to door and further processed to get value from segregated garbage.

Indore, Madhya Pradesh: Every morning, garbage vans across Indore play the celebratory song, “Indore hua hai number one (Indore has become number one),” sung by Bollywood singer Shaan in 2017, when Indore was ranked first of 471 towns and cities on the government’s Swachhata Sarvekshan (cleanliness survey ) rankings.

Every day the garbage van makes its way from one end of the street to another methodically, and everyone comes out to give their trash when they hear the song,” said Malti Kanojia, 52, living in Amar Tekri in Indore. ‘Of course all of us separate ‘gila’ (wet) and ‘sukha’ (dry) waste.”

Since 2016, Indore’s municipal corporation (IMC) has eliminated garbage dumps, ensured 100% household-waste segregation and converted waste to usable products, such as compost and fuel. It partnered with nongovernmental organizations for an awareness campaign to change the behavior of its citizens, contracted private companies to run some waste management operations, used technology, and improved municipal capacity to ensure the implementation of its waste management plan.

waste-dry-wetAll developed countries allow plastic bags to be used liberally, however, garbage is segregated at source and processed accordingly by municipal corporations very effectively by collecting garbage periodically from the doorstep. In fact, Singapore burns plastic to produce energy and the ash is submerged in water pools where fishes live along with corals etc very healthily.

The National Highways Authority of India is currently scaling up his technology to use plastic waste in making roads.

He came up with the idea of mixing plastic waste with Bitumen used for constructing roads in 2001. “That year the Tamil Nadu government had planned to ban plastic and my concern began with the more than 1 lakh people employed by the industry. Since plastic is derived from petroleum just like Bitumen, I thought of using it for road construction. The result, not only plastic waste was getting utilized, the roads were cheaper and steadier,” he said. The plastic waste does not have to be segregated and even multi-layered plastics can be used in the mix. “All we need to do is collect the waste, dry it out and use it,” he said.

white-toppingThe construction of every kilometre of road required nine tonnes of Bitumen and one tonne of plastic waste. This means for every kilometre of road, one-tonne Bitumen is saved, which costs about ₹30,000.

White topping of roads is taking several years to finish thereby creating a lot of inconvenience and accidents etc example s are Mandoli road, KPTCL road i.e Shakti Marg in Nehru Nagar Belagavi. Businesses which are already in trouble because of government policies are facing unprecedented problems because of the lopsided work s taken up to make city smarter like roads at Nehru Nagar wherein the buses have been banned from entering where all office s of bus operators are located

White topped roads offer greater resistance to vehicle tyres thereby decreasing the efficiency of fuel consumption and increasing wear and tear of tyres thereby decreasing the life span considerably.

Ex-councillor’s son ‘assaults’ hotel worker

Ashok Kumar, son of former councillor Jayashri Malagi of Belagavi City Corporation has been accused of assaulting a worker of a hotel (Donne Biryani) in Nehru Nagar after there was a delay in serving him water. A purported video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

As per the New Indian Express, Ashok Kumar, visited the hotel with his friends and the quarrel started after the worker did not serve them water. They allegedly started to abuse the worker and attacked him. They even entered the kitchen and assaulted him.

Meanwhile, the hotel management has alleged that the APMC police did not register a complaint against Ashok when they approached them. However, APMC police station inspector J M Kalimirchi said it was “a minor case in which no one was injured.”  “Similar incidents take place in restaurants in our jurisdiction each day. We have warned both parties. Nobody came forward to lodge a complaint,” he said.

waiter-attackAccording to eyewitnesses, Ashok reportedly asked the hotel worker to remove his clothes and touch his feet and apologize. When the worker protested, Ashok allegedly told him that was he was highly influential and threatened of taking steps to shut down the hotel. A frightened worker then touched Ashok’s feet and apologized.

The hotel staff also alleged that the police did not collect the footage from the hotel’s CCTV camera. They also alleged that the police were trying to protect the accused by not framing any charges against them. Meanwhile, the worker has reportedly quit the job.

The Belagavi Hotel Owners’ Association on met the waiter who was assaulted.

Presbycusis

$

Presbycusis which simply means an inability to hear soft voices is the most common type of hearing loss that occurs in the elderly. But my blog today is not one for medical awareness (It is out of concern for people who are prematurely succumbing to this). There is another terminology which may sound similar..presbyopia..which is seen in politicians which prevents them from seeing things(problems) near to them or at least they act as if these things are not seen. These small unseen things are major problems to us laymen of Belagavi.

The recent floods, the poor quality of smart roads, the farmer strikes, the road accidents all these are results of presbyopia of our ruling elite.

Presbycusis is for your information, not the selective hearing loss that most husbands develop after years of marriage, that actually is an allergic response to the constant irritation of the spouse’s voice.

man-megaphoneA wives voice is like a buffet of barbecue nation, early in the marriage you feel like listening more and more to her sweet voice just like hogging the starters but as you move on in your life and go to the main course you are already so full that you want no more and become deaf. Let’s not leave the topic though and let’s concentrate on the increasing deafness.

Belgaumites are becoming deaf for sure, they are unable to hear the soft voices. Look at our festivals Ganesh Visarjan, Shivjayanti, Rajyotsav, Eid, Ambedkar Jayanti and so on and so forth, every festival today is incomplete without the Dolby because light music is just not audible. In fact there is a competition of egos to get dolbyfied.

ear hear“They were allowed why not me” is the threat to the district commissioner. You have politicians defending Dolby for political brownie points. If permission is denied the authority becomes racist, castist, secular and political.

The fact that Dolby has claimed two lives is irrelevant. There is actually nothing much in a Dolby, recently you have a new trend, the Dj says someone’s name three times in rhyme and then there is noise, so if it is Jayanti of All About Belgaum the song will be Udaybhau Udaybhau Udaybhau repeated three times and then some noise and yes people dance on this.

dolbyWhile these noise-making machines pass by your homes there is a sense of impending doom in your heart as if it will burst, there are loud thuds in your ears, the window panes shake and your furniture is in tantrums. Cardiac patients bear the brunt of this dolbified evenings. The poor animals have to bear it for they cannot complain. But somehow these sounds don’t make any difference to the people dancing in front of the dolbies, nor to the authorities who are supposed to regulate them for they are suffering from Presbycusis.

It is not that we don’t have alternatives. Karnataka is a land of fabulous art forms, Belagavi has added to it the premium of Marathi flavors. Kunita, Lazium, Zanz Pathak, Dhol can all be replacements but they are all musical and what we want is noise that too loud because we have Presbycusis.

The problem is we have today lost the distinction between music and noise, what is loud is not music. music has rhythm it has a mix of timing and quality and all this is masked and buried by noise. The threat is we have become loud even in our day to day lives. On the roads too, we can see people blowing the horn of their vehicles, they need to be actually told that a horn is for attracting the attention of those who seem to be distracted and not to satisfy the urge for attention-seeking. There are rights of the pedestrians, there are rights for the elderly and in our city for the buffaloes too, we cannot wish all of them away with loud horns.

In our houses of all things- conversations are loud, actually noisy. Wives and husbands, neighbors, parents and children, everyone believing that homes are parliaments and we need to make ourselves heard(loudly). This I believe has led to people actually not hearing what needs to be heard, the solitude of those who commit suicide, the pain of lonely elderly couples with children abroad, the cry of innocents victimized by drugs, the misery of those who have been duped of their entire lives saving, these are the sounds that need our attention but are never heard because we have Presbycusis.

dhol

Another concern is that while we get used to these high octane decibels we have forgotten the act of conversation, sitting down with friends talking with each other, sharing your success and failures over a glass of good drink and soft background ambiance of a gazal has been replaced by the beats of a DJ, the DJ actually is one person who mixes the music and plays it in real-time.

The DJ music however as it appears today is like a plate of misal paw, those familiar with misal know that it is an addition of some sprouts with all the leftovers of the previous day, you add some spice and it appears tasty, DJ music today can mix anything, you can have a bhajan on tunes of rock and roll, you can have a gazal mixed with Qawali, you can have a devotional song mixed with rap, you just have to increase the decibels and people will dance on it. Pubs are discotheques n have done away with conversation and youngsters dance to the noise because they are suffering from Presbycusis.

Somewhere down the lane, we have drowned ourselves in noises that have disturbed the fabric and rhythm of our society. The chirping of birds early in the morning, the rustling of the leaves, the laughter of kids playing in the park, mothers humming in the kitchen, the whistling breeze are the musical sounds which can raise your soul and drown your pain. We have to make an effort to listen to sounds that can make us and people around happy so that we don’t turn out to be patients of Presbycusis.

The administrator of Belagavi City Corporation, Amlan Aditya Biswas, IAS who is the Regional Commissioner castigated the officers of the smart city and city corporation for the work done in a callous manner.

He has ordered that all the FLEX hoardings be removed from the city within 7 days.

He has asked the commissioner of the Corporation Jagdish KH to see o it that those Flex banners are not visible to me after 7 days.

During a review meeting at the Corporation, he called up the MD of Smart city and asked her to immediately attend the meet and clarify the various points.

In the meeting that followed Shri Biswas castigated the Trackbel company which is the consultant company to Belagavi Smart city ltd.

Biswas said you have taken crores of rupees but have not given good solutions. Don’t sit in Delhi or AC cabins but go on the ground study and then make solutions he asked the consultant company.

He also said if the company is incapable it must be changed. If the public money is not put to good use then it is of no use. My hair has grayed and I know how the tender and other things work.

Biswas further asked to survey all the street vendors and make a complete report. There are 3 PPP projects under smart city but as no one is interested to come forward for the same what is the use of those projects he opined.

He said to Shireen Nadaf, MD BSCL the earlier MD’s might have made some mistakes but you don’t repeat the same.

Amlan Aditya Biswas, IAS

Total failure of Belagavi Smart City?

$

By Rajkumar Topannavar
In the past, I have complained about the total failure of Belagavi Smart City Limited(BSCL). Belagavi city was selected in the first phase of smart cities but if you compare us with the cities selected in the 2nd and 3rd phase we are far behind.

My earlier complaint was forwarded to MOHUA which forwarded it to MOUDA, Karnataka. They called me for the meeting and then when I traveled to Bengaluru from Belagavi which is an overnight journey I was told that the meeting was postponed and I would be informed of the meeting when it will happen. I was later not intimated.

My fears of project failures and wrong selection of Project Monitoring Consultant(PMC) and Integrated command and control center (ICCC) contractor has come true.

There are many discrepancies in the PMC team and ICCC project contractor BEL, many stories and articles have been covered regarding these two in the local and state media but the State Government has failed to take action.

Lehmar India was awarded the contract to be the PMC, Lehmar never deployed a full team with the required expertise and experience as per the agreement with BSCL. They hired freshers from college and always kept staff lesser than the agreement.

Since many Managing Directors changed in BSCL and there was no competent authority to monitor the works of PMC the PMC did things as it suited, Later Lehmar India went bankrupt and went to NCLT. A  company called Tractebel India took over Lehmar India. Tractebel India had no experience in smart Cities but since they acquired Lehmar India BSCL had an agreement with Tractebel India and continued as PMC. We don’t know what part of Lehmar India did they acquire, was it liabilities or skills and experience of Lehmar India?

Tractebel India is no different from Lehmar India and they have failed on many levels to deliver.

Tractebel India does not have a skilled team as per the agreement. They have never deployed the required number of people nor the present team has the required experience, qualifications and skills.

BSCL has invested more than 350 crores out of 1000 crores allocated to them and the PMC does not have a Road expert. How are the contractors being paid when there is no Road expert for planning, approval monitoring of designs, drawings, and progress of works. You can verify and compare designs and drawings before awarding the contract and present works. Presently the contractor’s team does all the drawings and estimates as per their convenience and profitability and the Team Leader is approving their work without the presence of a Road Expert. First of all the Team Leader does not have the required skills and qualifications and on that, he is approving the progress of works and designs. There is information that the PMC team is taking bribes from the Contractors to approve the phase of works for payments.

Most of the smart roads work done is unscientific, wrongly designed and rates overestimated. Congress Road, Srinagar Road and KPTCL Road designs, estimates and work in progress need to be examined by a professional third party.

ICT Expert for ICCC project is also a fresher and lacks experience and does not know anything about the working of ICCC. His credentials need to be verified, Presently the work status of ICCC is being verified by professors of Engineering college who are not abreast with the latest technology involved in ICCC project nor do they have experience in these subjects.

The selection of Bharat Electrical Limited as a vendor for ICCC project just because they went 40 crores below is surprising. when BSCL called shortlisted vendors for technical proof of concept, BEL did not have the expertise to do that and they called upon a private company to participate in the proof of concept meeting and showcase but after awarding the contract BEL delayed the project for many months, Its been more than 3 years now and they have failed in delivery, now they have deployed 5 different vendors to complete the work who have huge coordination issues. BEL in the first place has no experience in the components of ICCC, They may be good in defense and other sectors.

Leniency is being given to BEL because they are a Government of India undertaking at the cost of the people of Belagavi.

Even if BEL delivers it will be a total mess and ICCC being at the heart and nerve centre of the smart city projects would lead to total failure.

While other cities selected in the 2nd and 3rd phases of selection have already completed the 1st phase of ICCC and have called tenders for the 2nd phase of ICCC projects.

Requesting you to sign this petition so that the State and Central Government takes action on these Organisations and Belagavi can grow as one of the best Smart Cities in our Country.

An online petition has been floated for the same,

Panchamukhi Sadguru Shri Pant Maharaj Balekundrikar

Shri Pant Maharaj demonstrated the existence of God within everyone and ways to attain eternal bliss in simple ways without needing intricate Yoga procedures or ‘sanyasa’. He explained the concepts of ‘Sahaj samadhi’, ‘ajapajap’, etc. He also preached the message of love, the strength of truth and devotion to Sadguru, the teacher, the guide and the friend on the divine path. He belonged to the Avdhoot sect.

Balekundri is a small village, located about a half hour drive from Belagavi. The temple of Shri Pant Maharaj stands there. The temple situated in a garden of mango trees, the surroundings are so serene, and peaceful.

pant-maharajThe ‘math’ houses the ‘paduka’ (ornamental shoe ware) of Shri Pant Maharaj. The usual custom is to offer an ‘Abhishek’, by which the paduka are worshipped. Apart from rudrabhishek, other pujas can be offered here like ‘Panchamruta- abhishek’, ‘Ekadashanis’, ‘palkhi seva’ and ‘butti puja’. Our guru Shri Digambarpant (kaka) always made us perform rudrabhishek with ‘naivedya’.

Just behind the Temple, Sadguru was cremated. The site is marked by an ‘Audumbar’ tree and is called ‘Audumbar katta’. In the main temple facing the ‘paduka’ is a hall displaying the photos of those associated with the Sadguru.

Behind the temple complex is the ‘Aaamrai’, a cluster of mango trees surrounding an open area. On the other end of this aamrai is the ‘dhuni’, a holy fire in Avdhoot sect, which has been kept burning since Sadguru expired. In fact, the fire originated from the pyre in which Sadguru was cremated. It has a photograph showing Sadguru wearing the ‘kafani’ (a loose outer garment worn by sadhus). Holy objects for avdhoot sect like ‘kamandalu’ (a water pitcher) and His ‘aasan-vyaghrajin’ (a mattress of tiger skin) are kept there.

There are many more sites to see here, some of the personal things used by Shri Pant Maharaj also displayed. After a little look around, you can have free prasad in the dining hall beside the temple. The prasad is a simple meal prepared in the local style. The kitchen and dining hall are named after Shri Pant Maharaj’s wife, Yamunakka, who was considered to be an ‘Annapurna’, meaning no one would go hungry from her door, there would always be food available for everyone.

The governing body of the math of Balekundri is “SHRI DATTA SANSTHAN”. It is a non-profit, religious organization established by the brothers of Sadguru after his death to look after the day-to-day running of the temple and to conduct all the ceremonies. It was registered as a Trust and all the rules and acts were decided very back in 1933 under the erstwhile Sangli Sansthan.

pant-maharaj-1The two main ceremonies it conducts at Balekundri are on Shravan vadya 8 Shri Pant Janmostav (birthday of Sadguru) and Punyatithi Utsav on Ashwin vadya 3. The sansthan runs a school in the math complex. Sadguru Pant Maharaj himself was a teacher and what better memorial for him would be than a school. For the convenience of visitors, there are rooms available to stay. These are built by donations of the followers and are given free of charge to the visitors who wish to spend more time with the Sadguru.

On the first day, a procession of the holy Avadhoot flag, the Prem-dhwaj, starts from the ‘Pant wada’ in Samadevi Galli of Belagavi and reaches Balekundri by late afternoon. The flag is hoisted at Balekundri mandir in the evening and the ceremony is declared open.

The second day is the palkhi day. Palkhi is a palanquin symbolically carrying the Sadguru. It is borne by the worshipers who consider it as an ultimate honor. The procession of palkhi is quite long, every one wants to be a part of it. Worshippers sing bhajans in front of the palkhi. It starts from the ancestral house of Shri Pant Maharaj at Balekundri village. After visiting the regular spots, it reaches the main mandir by afternoon.

The last day is of Mahaprasad. All are given prasad, which is prepared by many mandals of different places. As per our tradition, everyone sits together and consumes it. In Avdhoot sect, everyone is equal; there are no differences by castes, wealth or knowledge.

Shri Pant Janmostav or the birthday of Sadguru falls on Shravan vadya 8, the auspiscious birthday of Lord Krishna too. A function is arranged on that day too. A grand function is also arranged at ‘Daddi’, the birthplace of Shri Pant Maharaj.

Other festivals celebrated are : Dattajayanti, Shri Guru pratipada, Shri Pant Mangal Vivahadin, etc.

How to Reach There

Although the nearest railway station to Balekundri is Sulebhavi, the most convenient one is Belagavi. Balekundri can be reached from Belagavi within half an hour by city buses, which have a good frequency, and it lies on the Sambra airport road. There are two bus stops sharing the name of Balekundri, the one to visit is ‘Pant Balekundri’ which is the second stop coming from Belagavi. The buses going to ‘Pant Balekundri’ drop you right in the front of the temple, with other buses going through as if those to Sulebhavi will drop you on the main road entailing a 5-minute walk to the temple.

About Pant Maharaj as a teacher:

Shri Pant Maharaj (Datta) decided not to go in for higher study knowing the financial condition of his family. First, he got a clerk’s job in a government office; but he could not continue it; because the absurd way of working, dubious dealings, bribery, and all false irritating functions did not suit him. Therefore, he applied for a teacher’s job in London Mission School. He did not get the job. Therefore, he took up teacher’s job in Marathi school with a salary of Rs.12 per month. Rev. Smith of London Mission School – when he came to know that his school student is working in Marathi school – it did not please him. He took Datta as a teacher offering him Rs. 20 per month salary.

Thus, in 1880, Dattopant Balekundrikar became a teacher in London Mission School, where he learned for 8 years and passed Matriculation. At that time, a teacher had to teach almost all the subjects to different standards. What he learned from his mentor, Mr. Khot teacher, he faithfully followed and served as an ideal teacher for almost 23 years. He sincerely taught the subjects and helped each student. He helped his co-teachers also. He could take their classes when they had some problems.

He was an extraordinary teacher. Students, as well as his co-teachers, liked him very much. Being simple and noble person he always adjusted even with the office staff of the school. Pant excelled as a teacher in not only teaching subjects but also systemizing the fundamentals of education and attaining academic excellence. Students and colleagues honored him always. Even the school management adored him for his formidable knowledge and compassionate attitude towards students and others. He served from 1880 to 1903. Many students passed and after studies got higher posts; but none of them ever forgot their only one affectionate and humble teacher. He was always busy either in correcting the notebooks or in solving the difficulties of some students.

In 1881-82, his brothers and cousin brother came to Belagavi for education. Therefore, Datta had to shift to a bigger place. He stayed in Mr. Gokak’s compound on rental basis along with his brothers. In the following years, the house of Datta almost slowly transformed into Gurukul. Wherever he stayed, that place became almost Annachhatra and Vidyadan Graha for distressed, helpless, poor, orphans, devotees, relatives and wards. Even in the house, Datta had a regular and rigid schedule and format. He used to get up at 5 a.m. to wake up inmates. He helped them to fill up water, to make water hot, to see that all the inmates and others could take bath. Each one had to perform Sadhya Vandan, Namasmaran, Poojaand physical exercise. Datta in the morning also did correct the homework of the students and inmates and helped his brothers in the daily choir.

In the year 1882, he married Shri Padmama’s daughter Yamunakka, who was just like Mahalaxmi, Mata SakshatAnnapurna Devi. Datta as a strict disciplirian had laid down rigid rules to be followed by each member of Pant Wada. Datta as a teacher insisted on physical fitness doing Suryanamaskar, Yogasan on regular basis. Datta used to take lunch at 10 a.m. before going to school along with all his inmates in one Pangat. There was no discrimination or favouritism. Promptly a few minutes to 11, he could start to school and took many of the inmates along with him. He usually returned from school at 5-30 p.m. Again he used to solve difficulties and correct the homework. An ardent, untiring teacher all the way, he started coaching class of Mathematics to meet the financial need.

In the year 1886, his father left for heavenly abode. Therefore, the full responsibility of household of Balekundri also fell on Datta’s shoulder. He did well with the support of all his brothers and the understanding life partner Sau. Yamunakka.

Datta was very knowledgeable of almost all subjects. He used to read almost many books of different languages. He was very conversant with literature, spiritual texts, epics, and even the righteous scripts. He could guide and discourse on different subjects. In the school, he was very honest and attentive teacher. In the house, also he was an ardent and formidable teacher.

In the year 1891 Gopalrao after passing B.A. examination, he started working in collector’s office. In the year, 1893 Vamanrao passed L.L.B. and started practicing Law in Belagavi only. In the year 1894, Shankarrao and Narasimha Rao passed B.A. and L.L.B. and started practice. After seeing all his brothers well settled he decided to resign and finally in 1903 June he resigned and further fully devoted himself to Avadhoot Sampraday.

Academic teaching work got over Adhyatmic teaching activity continued which was his humble mission, not only just as a teacher or preceptor but as an individual full of pure love and pure mind, dignity, compassion did a lot to the mankind. Society and people adored him in many ways. Many thronged and could come to him to get their difficulties solved, some for guidance, and many for being blessed and for salvation.

He remained unique, always ready to be of some help in whatever way being, to others.

HC grants stay on felling of trees on NH4A

The division bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Abhay S Oka ordered stay on the axing of trees for the widening of National Highway 4-A between Belagavi and Goa, reports the Deccan Herald.

The court was hearing the public interest litigation filed by environmentalist Suresh Heblikar and convener of United Conservation Movement Joseph Hoover.

Further, the bench also directed the government to submit detailed information on the number of trees felled for various projects without obtaining prior permission under the Forest Protection Act, February 19, 2019.

nh4a-trees-cutnh4aThe petitioners submitted to the court that any development work in the Western Ghats and areas abutting the fragile Western Ghats would jeopardise the lives of animals and endangered avian species, and sought a stay on works. The petitioners in their plea also stated that the user agency had taken up widening of 14 km stretch between Belagavi and Goa that pass through the evergreen forests of Dandeli.

Already about 22,000 trees have been felled for the project and it is likely that another one lakh trees will be axed to facilitate the project. Permission has not been obtained from the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) for the said work. Also, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has not provided any details on compensatory afforestation in lieu of the lost forest cover,” the petitioners argued.
