In a few months, Electric vehicle (EV) users in Belagavi may no longer have to hunt for charging stations, HESCOM has planned to set up 25 Charging Stations in the city. Currently, the spots are being identified.

The station will be in a 1000 sq ft which can accommodate 6 EV’s and a provision with 500 KVA DTC and allied infrastructural.

This step can encourage the use of Electric vehicles as the major issue with EV’s is charging and with such facilities been made available more and more, citizens would adopt the same.

As per the guidelines of the Ministry of Renewable Energy, these charging stations should be at a distance of every 25 km on both sides of highways, apart from fast-charging stations at every 100 km.

Universities ranking in the state: Belagavi has 3

KSURF (Karnataka State Universities Rating Framework) rates universities based on their strengths and locally-relevant yet globally-flavored aspects of higher education. KSURF Karnataka is the first amongst all the States to undertake a detailed audit & evaluation of all its universities – an effort similar to the Central Government’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

ESTABLISHED UNIVERSITIES (10 + Years)

Rank # 3 – K.L.E. Academy of Higher Education and Research, Belagavi

Rank # 6 – Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi

YOUNG UNIVERSITIES (5 – 10 Years)

Rank # 10 – Rani Channamma University, Belagavi

In line with MHRD’s vision of creating world-class universities in India, Government of Karnataka, through KSURF, aims to assess and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the universities in the State, and help them improve on their deficiencies. An annual exercise, the Council will rate universities under regionally-relevant yet globally flavored parameters such as Research Excellence, Innovation, Teaching Excellence, Employability, Infrastructure and Inclusiveness & Social Impact. The framework consists of 5 broad parameters and 27 indicators.

For an unbiased and accurate assessment, universities are divided into four categories based on their year of inception and type – New University (0-5 years), Young University (5-10years), Established University (10+ years) and Specialist University (specializes in ONE core discipline such as Music, Agriculture, Horticulture, Folklore, Kannada Language, etc.)

In the inaugural edition of the ratings, under the Established Universities Category, Manipal University has been rated at the Top for Innovation & Research Quality, Visvesvaraya Technological University for Improvement in Research, Gulbarga University for Research Productivity, Bangalore University for Research Citations & KLE University for Industrial MOU’s.

In the Young Universities Category, JSS University & NITTE University score high on Teaching Excellence & International Diversity respectively.

Amongst the New Universities established in the last 5 years, MS Ramaiah University has been rated very high on Patents, PES University for Domestic Diversity & Reva University on Infrastructure.

rating uniIn the Specialist Universities Category, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore is rated at the top for Inclusiveness & Social Impact whereas Kannada University & University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad score high on the ‘Faculty with PhD’ Parameter. At the end of the audit process, universities are awarded Stars for their overall performance and within 5 different parameters, where 5 Star stands for Excellent & Top Rated University, 4 Stars for Very Good University with Potential to Grow Higher, 3 Star for Good Quality University; 2 Stars for Average Quality and 1 Star for universities that needs improvement and immediate intervention by the Government.

Unlike several indigenous and global rankings that usually provide universities with a single number or score with very little data on performance, KSURF, for the first time, will provide each University a detailed & exhaustive analytical report that senior leaders can use to draw up strategic plans to build on areas of strength and improve weak areas with an aim to achieve excellence regionally, nationally& globally.

The heaven is at the vegetable market. Where are you?

By Swatee Jog

We have heard people choose their place of residence based on the proximity to transport facilities, schools, hospitals or offices, but I for one, would any day choose Belagavi for its abundance of fresh produce.

Pet khush toh dil khush!

If you haven’t yet visited the market, you’re missing on witnessing this bounty. With plenty of rains and the farms flush with water and nutrients, Belagavi region is producing the best of vegetables these days.

Come to the city center at Raviwar Peth and you will see heaps upon smiling heaps of the most luscious cauliflowers, cabbage, supple beans bending like a gymnast, bright yellow lemons shining like the sun, the return of the local carrots, heralding an era of halwa and pulav at homes, peas that have been boxed within kernels like naughty kids and coriander that would give any bouquet a run for its money.

vegetablesThe maize is still ruling, though the original variety is now rare with the sweet corn’s arrival. The brinjals are shining like precious amethysts, waiting to be picked and stuffed to satiate those who love it.

Leafy vegetables are swooning in the winds, the red amaranth, the palak, methi and dil, seducing you with their greens. The cucumbers of both kinds, the potatos, big and baby varieties, lots and lots of okra, ash gourds, bottle gourds, capsicums, gavar (cluster beans), pumpkins, even the seasonal Gherkins (Tondli), the yam and the musk melon are all hobnobbing amidst the crowds. Apples are stealing the show with as low as 80 Rupees a kilo, red cheeks enticing you to pick and eat. The pomegranates, guavas, pears, chikkoos, bananas, even the watermelon is calling out the health-conscious.

Pc: Rajnish Tadkodkar

If you have time, don’t waste it at the malls or the cinema halls, come to the vegetable market. Get the kids to see how nature showers its bounty on our region. Invite your friends and relatives if you may. School folks, take the kids to have a look at the myriad colors, the textures, the varied smells, the gamut of tastes and textures of the fruits and vegetables. Breathe deep, soak in the smells. Forget your processed foods, fill your plates with sliced fruit, chopped veggies, throw a dash of dil and a quick squeeze of lime, stir fry them, churn up salads, pack a fruit platter and relish fresh.

Log on to your phones to check different recipes and make them. Let the kids have the crunch munch at lunch, make every day wonderful, the Sunday brunch colorful. When mother nature is giving her bounty, only the ignorant will turn their backs. Hope you’re not one.

21 full grown trees trans-located in Tumkuru in 2 days

Tumkuru Smart City Ltd became the first city in India to adopt Tree Transplantation model along with the Smart City work under the guidance of Belagavi based Tree Transplanter Kiran Nippanikar of Shoonya Foundation.

Speaking to AAB, Kiran said, “It was a proud moment for me to be a part of the development work along with saving 21 Trees 🌳 that would have been chopped down else wise for development and another 150 trees have also been planned.”

At the same time he said in Belagavi as well around 48 trees have been successfully trans-located and all the trees at their new location have shown good growth.

tree translocationBut the Belagavi Smart city Ltd hasn’t learned from this and it should actually follow this smart method of preserving nature when it is undertaking its projects for development & this model can actually go hand in hand as one done in Radha Krishna Road Tumkuru.

The new bus stand project, already the full-grown trees been felled. The one at Kalamandir, Vadgoan Hospital & Srinagar Road which has a lot of trees (Approx 80-90) has to be translocated elsewhere to make space for the construction. Have they thought of this????

What is the smartness in cutting a tree and then plating one sapling, by law it may be correct but not fruitful for this or the coming generations?

It will take 10-15 years for the trees to grow and give shade and if we can save them in their current state why not do it. Again it is an expensive proposition but when the Smart city is spending so much money why not this as well which will help restore Greenery as early & work in sync with nature without disturbing its habitat.

Sharing personal experiences with a Sustainable Lifestyle and Waste Reduction, Jaydeep Lengade of the Green Saviours addressed the gathering at the National Level Students Seminar on the occasion of World Ozone Day.

He talked at length about the 6R techniques of Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Repair, Rot, and Reuse which go a long way into supporting the environment. The event was conducted at KLE Society’s Raja Lakhamgouda Science Institute, Belagavi.

At the personal level, Mr. Lengade follows these principles in his own life including segregation of waste into 3 distinct categories in his own house. He refuses to drink from plastic cups and prefers to skip the meal instead of eating in a plastic plate with a plastic spoon.

Totally abandoning the use of tissue papers and even the finger bowl in hotels, he has not consumed from a bottle of bottled water over a period of more than 5 years.

Jaydeep Lengade of the Green SavioursHighlighting the fact that Belagavi produces 60 trucks of waste daily, with most of it ending up at the Turumuri dump yard, he called on the audience to follow little steps and even innovate to create a few new initiatives at the personal level to stop the problem of waste.

Mr. Lengade who is among the founder members of the Green Saviours team also stressed the need for Urban Forests and outlined the work of the Green Saviours team that has been engaged in tree plantation and maintenance for the past 180 Sundays without a break.

Jaydeep Lengade of the Green SavioursHe also highlighted that every individual has a Carbon footprint on account of the generation of Carbon dioxide which is directly or indirectly associated with each of our daily activities. We can become Carbon Neutral individuals by planting trees to offset the pollution caused by our actions. This responsibility is the least that we can undertake in the wake of the urgent need for ecological restoration and reversal of climate change.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s cabinet has decided to hold the Legislature session in Bengaluru and not at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi as the district is yet to recover from the damage caused by the recent heavy floods.

Ever since the inauguration of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, it has been a convention to hold the winter session in Belagavi.

CLP leader Siddaramaiah said the government has failed to respond to the concerns of the people in flood-affected areas, including Belagavi. So they are scared to hold a session there.

The Congress, in a resolution passed during its legislative party meeting headed by Siddaramaiah on Wednesday, was keen on urging the government to hold the winter session of the assembly in Belagavi, or face protests.

Kids trek kilometers to get to school amidst Wild animals on the prowl

In the past 45 days at least 15 cattle have been killed by wild animals in the Hemadga village in Khanapur Taluka.

This area also lacks any public transport and villagers are concerned about the safety of their children who have to walk kilometers together to attend school due to no public transport and the treat of wildcats keep haunting that road during their walk.

When no public transport services have already created severe inconvenience for the villagers of Hemadga and surrounding villages, the recent launch of new trouble created due to wildcats has added fresh woes to their problem in Khanapur taluk.

hemadgaOn the contrary, the Forest department says only 6 cattle have been killed mainly by wild cats.
The villagers are claiming it to be a Tiger who is on the prowl in their area. Whereas forest department officials inform the wildcats to be leopards and not tigers.

The NWKRTC had stopped its bus service to Hemadga, Pali, Anmod and other surrounding villages after heavy rains and has not yet commenced the service after part of the road was washed away. PWD has repaired the road but NWKRTC officials have certified the said road to be unfit for travel.

More than 100 children go by walk to school at Shiroli which is about 12 km and return the same distance due to no public transport. And now the threat of wildcat is haunting them, keeping their parents in the grips of fear till they return back home.

Khanapur Assistant Conservator of Forests Shashidhar said that the pug marks found near Hemadga were of leopard and so the cattle kill is suspected to be done leopard itself. As of now the forest department vehicle will pick and drop the children of Hemadga to school at Shilroli.

What is blocking Information Technology growth in Belagavi?

$

Information technology has resulted in the development of one of the world’s largest industries. Today, cutting-edge technologies such as computers, software and artificial intelligence, fiber optics, networks, and standards have an immense impact on information technologies.

Bengaluru has grown leaps and bounds but other cities have never been able to catch up like Belagavi which a supplier of employment but never create employment here in the city itself.

We tried to speak to Local Belagavi based IT and IteS entrepreneurs what needs to be done so that IT can grow in Belagavi?

RK Patil, CEO & Co-Founder Vayavya Labs Pvt. Ltd

1. Showcase the existing firms are pioneers in bringing IT to the City. Make sure they are included as part of all branding efforts of City Corporation, All Govt institutes, and offices.

2.  Makes sure the initiatives like Smart City, KSFIC or KIDBA  have inputs from these firms and preferably some nominees from these firms as their advisors or consultants

3. Provide a central location (within city premises) at affordable prices(rentals) as a working place for these companies. You could look at bringing concepts like WeWork or CoWork.

4. The IT park is conceived on the models of Industrial sheds. This does not work for the knowledge industry!  Politicians and Govt. officials should understand this.  Manufacturing or heavy industry and IT industry differ a lot.

5.  Try influencing major Indian brands (like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, HCL etc) to make Belagavi as their destination for expansion or growth. There are a lot of North Karnataka engineers in IT who migrate to Bangalore every year. Collect that data and present to the firms as to how they can help in preventing a mass urban exodus. Govt might have to shower some incentives (other than Landbank) for these firms.

An eco-system is very important for smaller firms to survive and to be nurtured to grow the industry.

Vayavya Labs is an Embedded Software Tools and Services Company. The Company is HQ in Belagavi since 2006 with a branch office in Bangalore and Santa Clara (USA). It holds 11 US patents in the EDA/ESL Technology domain and works with some of the leading customers in the domain of Semiconductor, Electronic Design Automation, Consumer Electronics, and Communication.

belagavi-itAbhishek Latthe, CEO, SenseGiz

Basic infrastructure needed for businesses needs to improve in Belagavi- there are frequent power outages throughout the year. The land which close to the city is needed and not something far away from the city to make projects viable. Some incentives can also be given to companies for initial investments in Belagavi, something similar is done by other states like Gujarat etc.

Belagavi already produces many highly talented engineers every year locally, so the People to power technology companies are surely available. May experienced engineers who are originally from Belagavi are also interested in coming back if they get good career opportunities in Belagavi.

SenseGiz makes enterprise and industrial IoT products for sensor-based condition monitoring, security and real time asset/people tracking applications using a combination of proprietary mesh connected hardware, cloud, analytics and apps.

Rohit Sejekan, Managing Partner Bitjini and Technical Director Playmantis Studio Pvt. Ltd.

An IT complex within city limits exclusively for software companies. Which could be further classified into a completely furnished office or semi-furnished offices on rental or lease basis. With common or private conference rooms.Proper connectivity by bus at short and regular intervals if the complex is provided outside city limits.
To boost up the growth, IT companies in Belagavi should be given first preference for any Local District Government IT Projects should.
Attractions and Entertainment like Malls and Multiplex can draw the attention of freshers or young passing out talents to stay at Belagavi rather than going to Metros.
Subsidized Cab services should be a bonus, as I feel this can help the employees, from my experience over the years.

Shirish Chincholimath, Chairman and Director Playmantis Studio Pvt. Ltd.

In my small time experience I could realize the following things:
1. Accommodation for employees is difficult compared to Metros. Getting a PG or house for rent is challenging according to the employees or students to are trying to migrate to Belagavi. If we improve this many people would love to relocate.
2. There are fewer Job providers than seekers. We should give scope to entrepreneurial development in the city.
3. Provision for more incubation centers and co-working space will help build small scale company at an early age.
4. Attractions and Entertainment like Malls and Multiplex can draw the attention of freshers or young passing out talents to stay at Belagavi rather than going to Metros.

Hitesh Dharmdasani, Director Of Technology at AnexGATE, Founding Owner at Informant Networks

Information Technology as an industry can only grow in Belagavi if it is an amalgamation of policy and people. While Belagavi is right now having the right ingredients for an IT industrial complex, we need a policy directive that will make large companies set up their base here. Incentivizing companies to set-up a base here will definitely give a huge impetus to the IT scenario here. A lot of people who are originally from Belagavi, want to come back to their homeland and work. In order to make that happen, building a strong base is a key imperative for its success. There is also a huge influx of Engineering graduate to feeding this strong base once it gets going. Having said this, I feel the growth trajectory of IT is Belagavi is not just positive but also strong.

AnexGATE is a technology company, specializing in cybersecurity and secure connectivity products and services.

Tushar Patil, MD Btp infoserve pvt Ltd

Schools and colleges must conduct awareness programs where students can be taught about the latest technologies. Also, students must be given hands-on training in IT companies so that the are exposed to practical experience.

Omkar A. Dalvi, Co-CEO / Director Vijomidigital Technology Pvt Ltd

Need Operational IT park, not just for namesake: In Belagavi we can find 40-50 Small and Medium-Sized IT firms but all are scattered location-wise, they should be brought in one umbrella with good infrastructure. As an IT company, we face a lot of problem of power cuts at our area.

Belagavi as a Brand for IT Industry: Our MLA’s, MP’s and leaders should promote Belagavi at their own levels, and need to attract investments from IT giants of India and Other countries. Which will directly generate employment for thousands of peoples in and around Belagavi? And it will also help for budding IT entrepreneurs.

Dr. Ameet Patil, Founder, CEO Ecobillz Private Limited
For IT Industry to grow, there are three key factors required:
1. Plenty of good recognized companies/places to work in.
2. Connectivity: Flights, Internet speed, uninterrupted Power supply
3. A talent pool that stays back after passing out of their degree courses
4. Attractions and things to do in the City with respect to the young crowd such as good night life, pubs, malls
5. Up-skilling avenues such as good training institutes that provide job placements
We are having a multitude of Engineering colleges in the city, but the talent moves to larger cities as soon as they pass out from their course. The reason being, larger cities provide ample opportunities. If one does not work out, there is another one round the corner.

Having said that, Belagavi does have some great companies that provide a great career path to youngsters. However, lack of awareness or guidance makes them nearly invisible.
My thoughts on how to help grow IT in Belagavi:
1. Govt. or Local politician should recognize Belagavi Startups, bring them in the public view and provide incentives to outside companies to come and set up shop here.
2. Local institutes should partner with local companies and create a special recruitment drive giving local talent preference to join companies locally
3. Setup a few high-quality training centers to up-skill talent and have them tie-up with local companies for placements.
4. Proper city planning with respect to growth is required so that we can avoid problems being faced in Bangalore right now
5. And the rest will follow …

Our vision at Ecobillz is to eliminate the use of paper everywhere. Ecobillz is a digitization platform that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to digitize almost any kind of document/receipt and provide in-depth customizable Analytics saving our customer huge cost, time and labour. Belagavi gets its own designer fruit – Peru lifestyle

$

She is the quintessential Belagavi Bahu, successfully blending in with the city’s laid back culture, figuring out how to get her mojo and enjoying it all the same. How then, would a true Bombay girl think of bringing in new ideas to the city?

Shloka Doddanavar moved to Belagavi after her wedding last year, and now she launches a unique concept in Belagavi on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September with her new label ‘Peru Lifestyle’. I love the fruit, she says matter-of-factly. This bubbly girl is very clear about her ideas and designs which is very refreshing. Shloka’s first exhibition is an all-women show, with all the brands created, curated and crafted by women entrepreneurs and designers from Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi.

Somehow, meeting her, understanding her design sensibilities, her favorite colors and the themes that her design stands for, the fruit seems to be an apt allegory. The colors of the guava, green, yellow and pink, which are not your usual ones, somehow allure her and hence the brand. Shloka holds a Masters from the University of San Francisco and an MBA from S.P. Jain Institute of Management, Mumbai. She has had a rich experience in design and has curated ensembles for her niche clientele.

Shloka Doddanavar

Shloka Doddanavar

Always in tune with the fashion world, she started creating her own designs with the help of her craftsmen and soon found flavor with her acquaintances. She has an eye for beautiful and unique fabrics- having worked with her father’s business in packaging could be an influence.  With an impeccable sense of combining textures, youthful colors and clean lines, she brings a fresh aesthetic to lifestyle elements like clothes and home décor. Belagavi has had its fair share of branded wear and stores, but somewhere it craved for the designer element, where each piece is exclusively crafted. A reason why designer wear is preferred to prêt-a-porter is mainly because it offers you this exclusivity.

Shloka Doddanavar

Through her first exhibition, Shloka introduces Belagavi to renowned and unique designers and brands like Peru Lifestyle, Aarya_kk, Poonam and Divya, Vandana Malhotra, Timannya, Diya and Archana in clothes,  Artous bags, Fuchsia Shoes, Sacmate bags in accessories, she has a lineup of  Dulhari Décor, Home Décor by Peru, Homescapes Bedding and Bath in Home decor and The Brownie Bar with cakes and brownies. There’s also mesmerizing Silver, the brand by Shubhangi Gat Jinagouda from Belagavi who will also be showing at the exhibition.

The main idea, she says, was to provide exposure to the discerning people of Belagavi to designs and labels hitherto available only in the metro cities. These labels are in sync with her design ideology of fresh colors, clean silhouettes and easy to carry clothes and accessories. Belagavi is ready for a new kind of infusion of designer culture, she feels, with the correct mix of price, quality and aesthetics. So the products been shown are all carefully selected keeping in mind the subtle but classy taste of the Belagavi crowd who had to travel to bigger cities or rely on the internet for designer wear. A look at her Instagram previews tells us there’s much to expect from Shloka and Peru Lifestyle in the days to come.

Peru Lifestyle is showcasing these brands at Hotel UK 27 from 11.00 to 9.00 , Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September 2019.

Enforcement Directorate (ED) completed questioning Congress MLA Laxmi Hebbalkar on Friday. Hebbalkar said she had provided all documents related to her financial dealings to the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Sources in the ED said that she will be called for questioning again later. The ED officials are analyzing her answers and documents
The Deccan Herald reports, She also said that she did not have any financial dealings with Shivakumar.

However, she refused to answer a question when asked why the ED summoned her if she did not have financial dealings with Shivakumar.

Sources said she was questioned about her links with Shivakumar and investments made by him.
Her interrogation lasted around seven-and-a-half hours during which she denied having any financial transactions with Shivakumar and that he was her political “guru” and had only helped her “grow politically” in Karnataka, reports the New Indian Express.

New Indian Express story further mentions – Hebbalkar told a section of media that she was asked to furnish several documents pertaining to her businesses and she has submitted the same. Sources on condition of anonymity said that the agency may reportedly book a case against Hebbalkar under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) after she allegedly failed to answer some key questions on her business investments and a huge amount of cash transactions in some co-operative societies post demonetisation in November 2017, which were later channelised to Harsha Sugar Factory, of which she is a director.

bpc-bervetBrevets are long-distance cycle rides with checkpoints. There is a closing time monitored for each event. You take care of everything that comes your way from food to water or even punctures.

Brevets are not just about men and women with strong legs and mind. It’s about being smart and strategic too. U need to plan your day. The food, the sleep (you are totally deprived of in 400 and 600kms) the distance per hour, the need your fellow rider might come across; and also considering all those unwelcome situations you may come across like wrong turns and punctures. It teaches you a lot of things in real life which you can co-relate and learn.

This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. Participation in randonneuring events is part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie and perseverance are the hallmarks of randonneuring.

So all those who love to peddle, get on your saddles now, it is time to ride….
