A group of like-minded youth are on a mission to protect old forts and have cleaned up the 300-year-old Sada Fort located in Sada village situated in Chorla gram panchayat limits, 31-km away from Belagavi city.

They removed wild weeds, creepers, shrubs and small trees growing in and around it. The fort had been neglected and urgent attention was required and the movement undertaken by these youths is worth a praise.

Located amid serene surroundings, the village is blessed with greenery and waterfalls. The fort earlier belonged to Desai Sardar, a soldier in Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s army. Most youngsters here work in Goa, while their parents stay in the village and practice agriculture. According to the villagers, Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Rajaram Maharaj, sons of Chatrapati Shivaji, would visit this fort to keep a watch on surrounding areas.

sada-fort-clean1sada-fort-clean1While there are no actual records depicting the history of the fort, the villagers said that whatever is known about it has been passed down through the generations. Now, however, the fort walls are deteriorating due to negligence.

Satkaryottejak Mandal of Sada village and Durgaveer Pratishthan, a group of youths engaged in fort conservation, have started cleaning the fort up by restoring its walls, in the hope of making it a tourism hub.

They have been working on weekends for the past two weeks, and are hopeful of completing the work soon. Ravi Desai, a villager, said, “Our village once had about 700 houses and was prosperous during Shivaji Maharaj’s time. But today, only 20 homes remain here, and basic amenities like health care, electricity, etc, are not available. The fort has also been neglected. Saddened over this, we approached the Durgaveer Prathishthan to take up restoration work. We want the help of authorities or philanthropists to bring back the lost glory of our village,” Abhijeet Ashtekar from Durgaveer Pratishthan, said, “We have a group of about 40 people from Belagavi, Sankeshwar and Goa taking part in conservation activities. We had organized two drives last Saturday and Sunday, and will be organizing two more to complete the work.”

Prashant Rao Aihole, a resident of Athani and husband of the Belagavi Zilla Panchayat president was arrested by Belagavi district police on the charges of cheating, breach of trust, intimidation and financial misappropriation.

Prashant is the president of the Sri Lakshmi Multi-purpose Credit Society in Athani.

Sanjay Eknath Satpalkar had filed a complaint against Prashant on April 17 alleging that the latter had cheated him to the tune of Rs 2 lakh in the pretext of giving a site through his Shri Mahalaxmi Multi-Trade Distribution Pvt Ltd in 2012, reports the Times Of India.

SP Sudheerkumar Reddy stated in a release that sufficient documents had been collected to prove the complicity of the accused in the crime before taking him into custody.

The society also faces allegations of collecting deposits from the public and not returning them on maturity. Some depositors have complained that Prashant had allegedly collected money on the pretext of distributing housing sites in Athani, and failed to do so.

In complaints filed to the Athani police earlier this month, depositors complained that the accused had collected money from more people than he could distribute sites for.

They also accused him of buying agricultural land but not getting converted it into non-agricultural land, reports the Hindu.

A few months ago, a group of depositors had staged a dharna in front of the zilla panchayat and tried to gherao Asha Aihole, ZP president.

Dead lakes see a new ray of hope with rejuvenation works

$

Each neighborhood had a lake where you and your siblings went swimming and fishing is now a garbage dump and new visitors can’t even imagine a lake there. You yourself can remember the place as one where you sailed your little paper boats and from where you excitedly brought home guppies and tadpoles to put into your house pond.

With urbanization and newer methods to get water, the ground water level has depleted to a great extent. Now there are few NGO’s and the group who have come forward to rejuvenate such dead lakes by which the groundwater level rises.

PYAAS FOUNDATION is working on the Bailwad lake in Bailhongal. The lake belongs to the hot and arid drought affected zone of Bailhongal. The village was once famous for the ancient temple dedicated to Siddabasaveshwara.

Pyas started working there was a mountain of hard rock and rubble. They were told that there were numerous attempts at the lake, and everyone gave up when they hit the hard rock surface.

Today two months later lake Bailwad stands evidence to the resilience of PYAAS, today one can in actual see a lake, derocked, desilted, with a layer of compressed black soil to prevent loss of water, with a live spring pouring water in hot blazing sunlight.

baliwad-lake pyaas foundation
The Baliwad Lake

PYAAS FOUNDATION has also taken up the rejuvenation of the Macche lake and work is in full swing. The foundation has already rejuvenated a couple of lakes last year.

The new multipurpose project designed by a group led by Kiran Nippanikar is expected to give a new dimension to the tiny Peeranwadi village. It is just not rejuvenation of the lake, but a project which can provide shelter to the stray cattle, encourage fish farming, organic farming and more. When the project was brought before Jai Bharat Foundation of Jayant Humbarwadi and a few more industrialists, they were convinced and ready to fund it. Jaybharat Foundation has taken the lead along with Polyhydron Foundation, Vega, Belgaum Ferrocast Pvt Ltd, Abhishek Alloys, Sneham International as a group have come forward to undertake the lake rejuvenation work as a CSR activity. Around 30 trees also were translocated with the help of PWD.

peeranwadi-lakeThese groups have come up and are putting all their efforts to raise the water level with their good deeds. But time has now come that such activities must also involve the local villagers who will do Sharma Daan as Satyamev Jayate Water Cup which is essentially a competition between different villages to see who can do the maximum work for watershed management and water conservation in the period of the competition. The Water Cup creates a platform for villagers to apply their learning from our training program and make their villages water-abundant.

Open Well Project a boon for water supply in Belagavi

$

With the advent of summer, each one thinks of the heat and the availability of potable water. This year with less rainfall and drought situation in the nearby districts the current water level in Rakaskop and Hidkal would be sufficient up to Mid June.

Belagavi city was dependent on well water before the commencement of Rakaskop scheme. Most of these wells were constructed before and during the British Raj almost 100 to 200 years back.

Dr. M. Vishveshwarayya who designed the Rakaskop Scheme had mentioned in the Preamble to his report that “Belagavi water supply can be maintained by a chain of wells.”

In the year 1995, the Rakaskop Reservoir was the only source of potable water for Belagavi city. Wells had fallen into disuse over the forty years of piped supply of water. Rains were delayed till July 22nd and the Reservoir was completely empty. Alternate sources of water had to be found.

Belagavi’s attempt at water security for all its citizens by harnessing local resources falls into the latter category.

12pulley-well-belagavi

baraIn 1964, when piped water was introduced in Belagavi, households were uncertain about getting connected to the pipeline. When efforts to woo residents failed, the then divisional commissioner had what he thought was a brainwave. Since residents were refusing piped water,  he ordered the closure of the wells. Ironically, 50 years later, the same government machinery had to work hard to reopen wells.

The Open Well Project represents a local initiative undertaken through local innovation to radically transform a public service to solve a local problem and benefit a Tier II city.

Congress wellThis effort is presented, in all humility, merely because it is a replicable effort for almost everywhere there are unmapped and untapped underground water resources.

Design of mini filter, alum dozer, chlorinator, pumps, connection to the existing network for supply of water. Involvement of community, social organizations, N.G.O.’s, Private entrepreneurs and donors to execute the project.

Engineer R S Nayak was spearheading this project and he implemented it successfully and also got many awards for this scheme and the same was replicated in many other cities as well.

The well at Veerbhadra Nagar was constructed by the British in 1908 and has a water column of 100 feet. The source of water for this well is a stream coming from nearly 5 km away between two trap rock layers and opening at this point. Three wells were constructed at this place and are connected by a tunnel which is six feet in height.

The well at Shetty Galli was constructed by the British in 1885. The well is perfectly rectangular in shape and the dimension of the well is exactly the same both at the top and the bottom (in mm). The well at Math Galli was constructed by the British in 1883. The Fire Station was located near this well. The well at Kirloskar Road is a high yielding open well centrally located in the city. The Borough Municipality was supplying water from this well by constructing a small overhead tank.

The well at Goods Shed Road was constructed by the British and has a water column of 90 feet. It was observed that almost all these wells were surrounded and protected by a layer of laterite.

The ‘Congress Well’, then known as ‘Pampa Sarovar’, was constructed in 1924 during the Congress Party’s historic convention which was presided over by Mahatma Gandhi.

Cost of construction of the well at that time was Rs. 4370 and 3 annas. This well supplied water to lakhs of people who had assembled for the Convention.

What Water do you want?

A city with a water body enjoys several stories to claim its own. Delhi and the Jamuna, Kolkata and the Hoogly, Sangli with it’s Warna and Krishna, Pune with the (now) tiny but very much its own Mula and Mutha. You get the drift. Stories of floods, of its fertile soil, swimming lessons and also of drowning abound.

Belagavi, a sweet little cozy city, does not have a river of its own. The Tamraparni, Malaprabha, Hiranyakeshi are all miles away. But Belagavi has had its share of the water bodies, the jewel in the crown being the Fort Lake. The lake, with an island to boast and stories of sightings of the crocodiles make for a good recreation place today. It also greets visitors as they enter the city by road. It shines by the day and buzzes by the night. Flanked by the Fort, it is definitely an attraction. Apparently, the island is a result of the de-siltation activity years ago.

The other cousins are perched on the hillock towards Hindalga, now in a set of 5, separated by embankments, popularly known as Argan Lake. Although off reach for common folks, it houses several species of birds, commonly identifiable among them being the cranes, the egrets and the ibis, also several kingfishers lining the banks and atop cattle. Before being taken over by the KHB buildings, the place right below the railway overbridge used to be a lake.

We often gauged the rainfall by the expanse of the lake, many times spreading right upto the Raghavendra Swami matha. I have witnessed the whole of the left hand side of the bridge being submerged during the eighties, for many years before buildings sprung up.

Congress Well

Belagavi, however, does have its share of huge open span wells, the Congress well being right at the forefront. It has shrunk in size after the renovation and appears tamed now with all its enclosures. But it used to ooze enough oomph and mystery in its heyday. The well at Hutatma Chowk (Kaveri Cold drinks) is synonymous with its twelve pulleys or Gadgada. Joshi mala in Khasbag has a huge open well where a large population of Belagavi claims to have learned to swim.

A superb well lies locked behind Bharatesh High School, finely built and with clean waters. A huge water body has reluctantly sprung up beside Big Bazar, owing to massive digging for foundation work as also near Gomatesh High School, where even buffaloes are found bathing in the evenings. The small lake at Angol barely has any personality of its own, largely due to its wild vegetation. The moat around the Belagavi Fort is filled with water for a major part of the year, especially after some showers.

A water body, however small, brings with it a unique charm. Birds, animals use it as a watering hole, cattle dot the periphery while humans frolic. It also runs the risk of flooding when it’s too close. Whatever Belagavi has in the name of water, is thankfully clean, unlike Bangalore or other places where lakes have turned toxic and frothy. Whatever space a water- body would have occupied, Belagaviites have in their hearts! And their eyes do water with empathy. That’s more than enough

We recently had posted, Open Well Project a boon for water supply in Belagavi, in which there was also mention of the Shetty Galli well.

The well at Shetty Galli was constructed by the British in 1885. The well is perfectly rectangular in shape and the dimension of the well is exactly the same both at the top and the bottom (in mm).

But now the surroundings of the well are like a garbage dump. People urinate near the well and all the garbage is dumped in the vicinity.

Earlier the entire surroundings of the well were well maintained as there were a wall and entry was restricted but during the road widening the said compound wall removed and after that, it has turned into a urinating spot at night and all the vegetable vendors dump the garbage there only.

The family is originally from Kargulpi in Hukkeri taluka. For a couple of years, husband, wife and their two children lived in the shed in Marutinagar area near Gandhinagar and made their living by selling vegetables. Neighbors say that there was a constant dispute between husband and wife. On Tuesday night, the fight got fierce.
