The confused AD aadmi

by Dr. Madhav Prabhu
Nowadays nothing sells unless you advertise. Your product can be the best, but unless people know thorough advertisements, it does not exist. ‘Jo dikhta Haiwahi Bikta hai’. There are huge budgets for advertisements and there are firms which have exclusive contracts. There are celebrities too who make more out of advertisements then their actual profession. Infact the advertisement makes or breaks a brand.

The advertisements can lead you to believe the unbelievable and sometimes the very extreme. You suddenly start finding the product advertised on air something you desire the most, it’s like your neighbors wife, looks so beautiful that the quality product at home looks like a no show.

Sometimes when you sit back and think over it, you wonder if the world is truly a utopia, too perfect to be true or are you an idiot to believe these Advertisements. Here are a few Ads I never understood and I keep wondering whether I have lost touch with my basic sciences. These adds looks great, have the best celebrities and assure quality but what they don’t do is make any sense.

oxyWell, there is this Ad which claims that the mineral water it endorses has extra oxygen, rather it claims that it is rich in oxygen. Number one, the chemical formula of water is H2O and if you add another oxygen to it, it becomes H2O2, that’s hydrogen peroxide used in medicine to desluff wounds. So how does the company accommodate for the extra oxygen, I wonder. Now all this extra oxygen goes into the colon which is the large intestine where all the water is absorbed in humans, this oxygen has to some how then enter the blood cells a process almost exclusively done by the lungs in normal humans. How it reaches the lungs and then replaces carbon dioxide is something i miss every time. Anyway getting extra oxygen seems like a good prospect.

There are some advertisements which are completely misleading, these people must be crazy, they advertise for products which we never get in the market. I am taking about the sodas, which use Surrogate advertising. The ads which are made on these sodas show them to be the most exciting drinks in the market. There is Carlsberg which gives so much confidence to Saif Ali, there is McDowell’s which makes you number one and there is Kingfisher which guarantees good times. A layman like me would love to have such soda to make me feel like shaktiman and act like saif. The problem starts when we search for these sodas, there is no place where we find them. I once went all over Goa searching for McDowell s No1 soda but not a single shop could offer me this coveted drink. I believe you don’t get this soda in every place they are exclusively for the elite, this issues should be taken up by the urban naxals, it is so anti poor. Why advertise this soda and raise our expectations if you are not going to allow us to drink them.

carlsberg

Advertisements do confuse you a lot, if you are diet conscious they will lead you to believe that you can live on those products. You can have plenty of fruits in your shampoo and soaps, you can get all the salt you want in your toothpaste, you can get milk in dove soap, lemon in detergent, proteins in shampoo, Vitamins in hair oil and antioxidants in cosmetics, why do we even need to eat foods. The concepts that nutrients are absorbed only from your gut and not from your skin and hair must be wrong. In a country where people live on one square meal every day you wonder why so many fruits and vegetables are used in toiletries and cosmetics. Soaps are soaps, they are meant to enhance the property of water to clean, how does adding fruits and vegetables help and how do the nutrition they provide reach the body, these advertisements make me wonder how much science has progressed. It must be the models and actresses that endorse these brands, their skins have special properties which help them acquire food from soaps. Perhaps thats why even after washing so many clothes and utensils they appear so fresh, something my wife never learnt.

Advertisements intimidate you and make you emotional too, look at the insurance company adds, “jindagi ke saath bhi, jindagi ke baad bhi “, in my jindagi have not got any benefit till now all I do is pay premiums How does it matter what happens after jindagi is over, but some how these adds make us think our afterlife will be successful only if we plan for our death and the good of the family thereafter. There is a high likelihood of my death and if I don’t insure then my family will be in shambles, the deal is if I die in an accidental death my family will get more than if I die a natural death, and once I am insured my family is the company’s headache. I recently felt i should take a new policy from a company which promised one crore for twenty rupees per day if I died as per it’s ad, the ad it seems failed to mention that this price is for people younger than twenty five, which person below twenty five has the money to insure himself. There is an ad showing a widow getting her daughter educated, married and settled on insurance money, wonder how many policies her husband did and what was the premium he paid in his life, which covered so many events in so much inflation. Anyway, I have fallen for the trap and insured myself and you should too because someday you will die and hope it’s before sixty and in an accident so your family get maximum returns.

thums-up-ad-3
Advertisement gives us hope too, when you see Salman Khan going to any extent to get a drink with a thumb on it you feel the drink must be special, when the drink promises to give you infinite energy and appeal you get to hope that it will make your life. But then when average people like me try using these drinks it almost never pumps the adrenaline, may be something to do with defective adrenal glands itself. They do provide sugars, plenty of sugars and sugars finally give energy but readily available calories too, and all this adds up to increasing my weight and not my confidence. Bad tooth, poor bones is what we get from the consumption of aerated drinks wonder how we can do an adventure with them. Well there is one positive, it must be killing all the germs in the body with all the pesticides they contain, I am sure Salman does not need pest control.

Well, advertisements are entertaining, it’s a welcome change from our lives full of pot holes and miseries. They provide us with a hope to make us fair and lovely as being coloured is a crime in a country where even our Gods are wheatish and grey. They show us the naughty side of Katrina trying to eat a mango, when else would you see that, bet you can’t eat like her. They show us that wives can be happy if you give them good soaps and detergents, don’t know why my wife never gets that. They show that energy and strength can be got so easily and gyming is really unnecessary. Advertisements may be the only thing making us think life can be better with the right products in hand and destiny has nothing to do with it.

kat

I am sure you may also have come across Ads that you like and feel for, let’s see what you come up with and yes for misleading Ads, there is the The Advertising Standards Council of India to which one can complain.

The roads in Belagavi have turned from bad to worse following rains.

The Smart city tag which is mere a tag on paper it seems as after the rains the roads have become a dusty and commuting on them especially on two-wheelers is a major issue for motorists.

Several roads in the town have been in tatters due to various reasons and some of the potholes have been filled with mud and the loose soil is now dusty and sometimes the motorists cant even see the vehicle in the front on Congress road, even near Dharmveer Sambhaji circle, College road just to name a few.

Motorists rue that traveling on the potholed roads filled with sand has become a horrible experience. They said that they are suffering from breathing problems and reaching their workplace covered in dust.

Sujit said, “Let the elected representatives travel on motorcycles instead of cars to feel the plight of motorists,”.

It was high time that the authorities fill the potholes on the roads properly which will not cause health problems to motorists.

About KARNATAK LAW SOCIETY (Estd -1939)

More than three-quarters of a century ago, many eminent lawyers and visionaries from the North Karnataka region, who also happened to be leading lights in the Freedom Struggle, looked far ahead and decided that making legal education accessible to citizens of North Karnataka was a worthy goal, whatever the difficulty. Thus seven eminent lawyers – N. S. Shrikhande, V.A. Naik, V. D. Belvi, B. N. Datar, S. N. Angadi. R. Kotbagi, D. S. Paramaj – came together to form Karnatak Law Society in 1939 in Belagavi.

Shrimant Raja Lakhamgouda Sirdesai of Vantmuri trusted these Founder Members to be true to their vision and a Promissory Note totaling Rs. 1 Lakh was executed by him to support the application for opening a new Law College. Many of these founder members and other legal scholars from this region volunteered to teach at this College despite lucrative practice, and extensive personal and social commitments. Belagavi thus became a renowned education centre for Law education. Students from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra took admission and proved to be active in social, political and judicial fields.

RAJA LAKHAMGOUDA LAW COLLEGE (1939)

rllc-building-new
In 1939 the college started functioning with only 37 students. It was a Glorious day in the infant life of the college when, the then Diwan of Mysore, Sir Mirza Ismail Formally Inaugurated the functioning the college in the new premises in 1940. The College was first housed in Doddannavar’s Bungalow at Belgaum Fort for during the second term in the academic year of 1938-39. It was later shifted to the magnificent palatial building of Anant Bhat in Tilakwadi from November 1939.
On account of selfless services of founder members of the society & other who served as Honorary Professors, a Lot of money was saved and out of these savings, the foundation stone for the Law College building was laid by Maharaja of Mysore in 1950 in the present premises of the Law College.

The first batch of Raja Lakhamgouda College started operating in 1939, graduated in 1941. Since then, more than 7500 students have passed through the hallowed portals of this esteemed institution. A few notables among the many luminaries that this college has produced include – Shri. E. S. Venkataramiah, Former Chief Justice of India, Shri. S. Rajendra Babu, Former Chief Justice of India & Chairman, National Human Rights Commission, .and Shri. K. K. Venugopal, Present Attorney General of India.

Gogte College of Commerce (GCC)

gcc

The management was able to start in 1954 its Commerce College of which Late Wrangler P.S.Katti became the first Principal. The heavy responsibility of managing these colleges soon brought the society into financial difficulties (and the same difficulty was also faced by Law College) as a result of which several attempts were made to collect funds to meet the situation. Good luck would have it the Management approached Raosaheb B. M.Gogte noted industrialist of Karnataka & Maharashtra for donations he donated a sum of Rs 50,000/- to tide all over difficulties. In 1966 college was named after him, as “Gogte College of Commerce” and Raosaheb B.M.Gogte was made a Patron of the Society.
It was the first Commerce College in Belagavi. The College Library is one of the oldest libraries with a rich collection of books capable of the meeting, the changing needs of students. Prominent alumni from this institution include Shri. Hemant Joshi, Chief Financial Adviser to King of Bahrain; Shri. Aftab Patel, CEO, All Omania Financial Services; Shri.Shyamsundar Keshkamat, Commissioner of Income Tax, GOA; and Shri. Prabhakar Kore, MP, Rajya Sabha and others who are working in distinguished positions

M.Gogte who again came to our rescue when the Society started its Engineering College in the year 1979. He gave a munificent donation of Rs. 10 Lakhs to the new Engineering College started by the Karnatak Law Society. It was named – “Gogte Institute of Technology”.

It was again among the first Engineering Colleges in Belagavi. The institute has resourceful and experienced faculties in the different departments. The institute has provided large number of placement to the students every year and number of students are being employed in the top most companies in India and abroad. The Vishwanathrao Deshpande Rural Institute of Technology, since renamed as Vishwanathrao Deshpande Institute of Technology (VDIT) was established in the year 2004 to provide technical education to the students of Haliyal, a rural area. Within a short span of a few years, VDIT has developed excellent infrastructural facilities and an academic climate to train the students to meet the rapidly changing techno-economic scenario. The Institute is located on a 26-acre campus, cradled by a picturesque landscape.
KLS established the PU-Science College in 2007 in Haliyal. In the May/June 2009 period, a BCA course was introduced in Haliyal.
The combination of these offerings in Haliyal marked an interesting foray in the history of KLS, whereby it was demonstrated that excellence in education offerings mattered more than location.

Gearing up for Ganesha

It’s that time of the year when the city is reveling in the preparations for the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Move around the city and you will see pandals sprung up at every nook and corner of the city.

Ladders held in place, the streets are being decked up with lights. Markets are abuzz with some preliminary shopping happening. The busiest of them all are the Murtikaars or the idol-makers. Both small and big idols are getting ready for the installation on 13th. A look at Vikram Patil’s workshop at Angol (Late Shri J.J. Patil’s son) and you see frantic activity taking place.

ganesha-readyganesha-readyganesha-ready

You would definitely smile when you see many Ganesh idols with a steel net basket hung around their arms and necks laden with coals, just to dry the wet idols, thanks to incessant rains this year. Vikram is excited about the idols that are leaving to Andhra Pradesh and Ichalkaranji. They are all clad in huge plastic sheets to safeguard from rains. Some are so tall, you have to strain your neck to have a look. Ask him about the height limit and he is quick to respond that the Mandals insist on having tall idols. Vikram holds some strikingly beautiful sketches which he has, based on which he creates these idols. He is trained at Bharati Vidyapeeth Pune and also at JJ School of Arts in sculpture. His workshop is frequented by young men, kids and enthusiasts gathered to have a look.

The same scene replays at Bharat Kumbhar’s workshop near Nartaki theatre. His assistants are busy giving final touches and painting is underway. Bharat’s workshop is full of clay Ganesha idols which are in much demand this year. Much enthusiasm engulfs the city and it’s just a matter of a few days before the Lord pays his visit.

First published on  Sep 10, 2010-
Lokmanya Tilak was fighting against the British rule and wanted something to be done publicly which would get people together which will eventually help in the freedom struggle.

In 1905, Tilak commenced the idea of celebrating the Ganesh Festival on a Public basis(Sarvajanik). Since then, the same is followed even now all over.

After commencing the Sarvajanik mandals for Ganesh Festivities in Pune, Tilak came to Belagavi where he asked Belgaumites to come together, and in 1906, the Zenda Chowk Ganesh Utsav Mandal was formed.

ganesh utsav tilak belgaumTilak was here in Belagavi in 1905 and he himself laid the first bamboo pillar of the pandal and ever since then the the legacy has been carried on by the Zenda Chowk Ganesh Utsav Mandal.

There are 6 Mandals which are a century old and the oldest is the Zenda Chowk Ganesh Utsav Mandal.

Govindrao Yalgi and Gangadharrao Deshpande took out a procession of Tilak from Raliway station to Zenda Chowk.

Zenda Chowk Ganesh Utsav Mandal now makes a collection of over a crore of rupees and uses the collected fund for various public service activities. From the year 2005, no public donations are collected by the mandal, all the expenses are borne by the interest received on the deposit. The Mandal helps poor students and this year also organized a body building event.

The number of Sarvajani (public) Pendals has gone up to 400 in Belagavi city this year. That apart, 2850(approx) public Ganesh pendals are being set up across the district. The grand finale to be marked by a huge immersion procession in the city and other parts of the district on the eleventh day.

In a special review meeting held by the Regional Commissioner PA Meghannavar in regards to the visit of the President to the city, the officials were of the opinion that it would be better to fly him to the venue at GIT Udymabag rather than driving him from Airport.

Bapu-Bittoo: Officials’ dilemma

Bittoo: Bapu.

Bapu: Yes Bittoo.

Bittoo: President Ramnath Kovind is coming to our city Bapu?

Bapu: Yes, he is scheduled to inaugurate the platinum jubilee celebrations of Karnatak Law Society in Gogte Institute of Technology in this beautiful city of Karnataka on September 15 Bittoo.

Bittoo: So, the President will get first-hand opportunity to witness how bad or worst are some of the roads, particularly the one from Bogarves to the venue the function Bapu?

Bapu: Unfortunately it is not likely, as officials are planning to airlift him in a helicopter from Sambra airport to GIT campus and back. Officials themselves have acknowledged that the roads are in worst and ‘non- motorable’ conditions in this city, which is regarded as the second capital of Karnataka.

Bittoo: Oh! So the officials want to save their skin as to how inefficient and irresponsible they have been when it comes to providing proper roads and drainage systems in the city that has been listed under the Smart City project Bapu?

Bapu: I don’t know Bittoo.

Bittoo: And all this at extra cost to the public exchequer sheerly due to well-known official apathy towards civic responsibilities and indifference towards the tax payers of the city Bapu?

Bapu: I don’t know Bittoo

The unrecognized teachers

by Dr. Madhav Prabhu

Happy teachers day to all, teachers are great influences in life, we never know the true extent to which they touch our lives till we leave them behind. We are because they were. Teachers have shaped us, turned is into our present forms. We may have ridiculed them, we may have loved them, we may have hated them, but today I am sure all of us miss them.

But it’s not only these teachers that teach you lessons, there are some we don’t realize too. It’s not lectures that they give us but its mostly life lessons. We never realize these lessons until we decide to learn from them. Everything and everyone is a teacher, we should only not stop learning. Each one of us has a teacher in him/her self, most don’t get him/her out of the box.

Let me share a few lessons that I learned in the last few years, lessons that may seem silly yet were something important in perspective.

My first teacher was my dual SIM mobile. Yup important life lessons learned when I am lonely and have nobody to talk to. My phone taught me that ” I AM A FANTASTIC PERSON “, yes unbelievable right but it did. Somehow in our schedule, we forget the most lovely person we have ever met and that’s ourselves. We forget to talk to ourselves, we forget to acknowledge the great heart that lies within. We don’t talk to ourselves, don’t focus on what we really think and what a really want, we don’t introspect and down the line, we lose the wonderful companion that we are to ourselves.

The dual SIM is something you should try when you are alone and feel lonely, just message on one SIM and reply on other, it’s a nice thing to do, you can tell yourself what you as going through and find solutions for yourself, you can discuss problem when you have nobody to tell and will never be judged for it. Tell me who else gives you that liberty, and at the end of it you are sorted with yourself.

The best thing it does is, it builds for yourself your own image and that is excellent for your self-esteem, you think for yourself where you are heading and if that’s what you aimed at. If you went to a counselor to do this he will charge you a bomb. I can tell myself how high my regards are for myself and say a few rewarding words for all the hard work I do which my boss never does. And while I chat with myself I know what a fantastic person I am and then I stop feeling lonely.

HESCOM is the company which supplies electricity to us, it adds sparkle to our bulbs and tubes, there is no life without power, there is no charge in cell phones and no soaps on the screen without HESCOM. But for a good student, HESCOM gives important life lessons “BE PREPARED FOR THE DARK TIMES “. This is a very important lesson in life and should be remembered especially when you are in the bright of your life. The lights can go off suddenly and you will be left with no alternative. Lights can go off anytime, it could go off in peak summer or even in heavy rains. Power can go out for no reason at all and there is no timing for the light to come back, it never keeps time and you don’t expect punctuality. Problems in life are also the same they can come anytime and make you go dark, they can take away all your comfort and leave you without the pleasures you enjoy the most.

But this unpredictability forces you to fight back, find ways and means to keep our cell phones and televisions work. You buy generators and inverters and you keep them charged and ready always waiting for a darker day. Life is like this too, we have to anticipate a dark day and while we are enjoying the life we need to keep our generators and inverters backed up so we have an uninterrupted power supply. Enjoy all you have but always plan for a cloudy day that’s what I learned from HESCOM.

I learned a lot from potholes too, potholes appear regularly after every rain, they cause so much inconvenience, they spoil the road they spoil your plans and they ruin your vehicles. Pot holes come in different sizes and shapes and you have someone to blame for them always. Potholes can be managed in two ways, just patch up and do a temporary job or reconstruct and do the road again. Whether or not a pothole is developed depends on how well the road has been laid and the material used.

Potholes taught me about failure, failures can be big or small, it can be of different nature and kind. Failures can ruin your life, they can break you forever or they can take away your will to succeed. Failure can come after every rain of success. We always have someone to blame for our failures. There are two ways of correcting our failures either do a patch up of compromises or change the way we approach our target and when we do that what material we use, to success matters, the hard work we put matters and this determines whether we will succeed. So potholes, taught me the mantra to success “HARD WORK, QUALITY EFFORTS, AND NO SHORTCUTS “.

There are so many things which teach you and there are so many situations too. These teachers teach you the hard way unlike in school where we are spoon fed, loved and cared for.

Lastly, there is another teacher from I would like to remember today, the super fuel petrol. Petrol prices fluctuate a lot sometimes the price is very high and sometimes a little less, its actually not determined on the ground, it is determined in the commodity market, its called Satta, an inflated economy, its an assumption and is based on no solid foundation. High prices can burn your pockets and break your back. Petrol can give you the pleasure of driving for some time but ultimately it will burn away and leave behind carbon and smoke. Petrol if saved for yourself it best for your pocket and country. The more you use petrol the more you burn your pockets, the more you damage your engine.

Petrol is like your ego, it’s there in everyone, sometimes more and sometimes less, its price is also based on no reality it’s based on your own perception about yourself, there is so much inflation for no reason. It takes you a little high, you can get happy satisfying it sometimes but ultimately it will burn you down and leave behind only the sort of hatred.

Ego kept to yourself or used a little less it best for yourself and your relationships with the outer world. More the ego more the damage you do. So the raising prices of petrol should remind and teach us the effects of inflated egos. There are plenty of teachers out there all you need is a good student.

Belagavi’s very own Ganesha carnival

Belagavi is the citadel of the middle class, the house of sweet tooths and the native of the patrons of art. We have our differences and we have our grudges, but when we celebrate, the world can only envy. We may not have huge hoardings and the pomp and show of the metros, we may not have crowd pulling celebrities but when we come out and rejoice, we do it from our heart and we can show the world how best to celebrate the festival called life.

By far the biggest festival celebrated in the city is its Ganesh Utsav, it’s actually not merely a festival but a carnival of devotion and happiness. The city is in high spirits, everyone is welcome and there is plenty to do. It’s the most awaited festival of the year and nobody can be low at that time.

Preparation
Although the festival starts much later, the preparations start as early as July or August. The first thing that tells us that we are on to the festivals is the Ganesh murtis which start appearing in Shahapur, Vadgaon, Bapat Galli and Mahadwar Road. As soon as you see them you realize its time to remind your siblings that they should apply for leaves and do their reservations. For us, the middle class, railways, and buses are the most important means of transport, and in this time of need, the government announces extra buses and trains to ferry home the faithful, if you don’t book in time you turn up paying double of normal charge.

Shopping

The shops get decked up in the last week of Shravan, there are mantaps coming up all over the city and the crowds start swelling up in Kirloskar Road, Ganpat Galli, Ramdev Galli and Khade Bazar, even the very dis-concerned can tell that its time for the most eagerly awaited celebrity of the year, the favorite God, Ganapati to make his annual visit to our homes.

The sweet shops have multicolored modaks on display, there are modak pedhas and the cashew nut modaks. Bapat galli has the electronic displays, Ganpat galli has the decorations and Ramdev Galli has the bed sheets and the clothes. The market is glittering in glory with counters catering to every demand. There are experts in idol making like the Lads in Shahapur who are making idols for five generations in Belagavi, and its wise to do the booking in Shravan itself.

Home Cleaning
Back home you realize its time for Ganapati when one morning your mom wakes you up and hands you the broom making you an instant aam aadmi. We traditional Belagaviites have three occasions when cleaning is compulsory, Ganapati, Dasra -Diwali and yes Sankrantri, every room needs to be spic and span, there is no room for bachelor’s and their privacy, every corner is dusted and every wall painted. It’s a febrile pitch and even the kids are excited to welcome the Lord.

Decoration

There is that one special corner however which is selected for hosting the deity, it is decorated and kept ready for the big day. The decoration has a base element which consists of one fresh bed sheet from Bombay Dyeing or Textile House, the Thermocol devara which are beautifully crafted and the beautiful samayis, this is then topped with plenty of other stuff ready to make the corner look like like a Bollywood set. If you are from Konkan you have a muntap on top and it’s called matav which has all the wildflowers and leaves adorning it.

Everything is set and the fever reaches it’s peak now, the wait seems like ages, its as if the marriage hall full of guests is waiting for the bride to arrive.

Belagavi’s very own Ganesha carnivalComing Back Home

The young men and women come back home, with leave’s from their offices and workplaces from places like Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai or even as far as New York, the buses and rails are packed with eager eyes waiting to see their homes. And then just when you think you can take it no more, the day arrives and the festivities begin.

It’s as if mother earth conspires to raise the pitch, she puts on her best costume, excited to welcome Ganu. There is greenery everywhere, flowers are in full bloom, the birds are chirping as if they were debating in the parliament, the streams are full of fresh water, the fields are lush with color, the atmosphere is just electrifying. It’s as if mother earth herself welcomes Ganesha on his arrival to her abode.

It’s time to get the things you shopped for all these days, out of the closet, wear new clothes, clean your vehicles and get the wooden paat ready. The paat is nothing but a wooden plank which otherwise is seldom used but today it is special as it is the chariot on which the Lord arrives.

Belagavi’s very own Ganesha carnivalChildren

The children are most excited, they get their share of fun too, the eldest one is the General of the army who is responsible for the firearms (the firecrackers actually) and the others foot soldiers ready to fire at will, but that will have to wait till the guest sits on the paat. It’s usually a short procession led by the elders with children tagged along. In Belagavi you will find the shehnai and the drums midway and you can hire them to add to the show.

By the time you reach the moortikar, its excitement at an all-time high, and you are just dying to see the first sight of Ganu.

There is a system that works here, the delivery is on a first come first serve basis and how do you ascertain your spot, no you don’t drop your a handkerchief, you keep you paat in the queue and after the formalities are done you are handed over the precious package, the eldest in the family gets the honor of lifting the paat with the beautiful image of the Lord on it, but wait its not only the elders, the children are not left behind and they are given the responsibility of carrying mushuk the mouse, and this responsibility is equally great and its undertaken with due diligence. Then the procession starts, it could be on foot, on a scooter or in a car, you feel like you are walking in the clouds.

Ganapati Bappa Moraya, yes that’s what is said and loud enough for the world to hear. The fervor is so much that some can’t stop dancing, the champion of hearts, the Lord of knowledge is coming to our house, nothing else can give you that feeling.

Welcoming Home

Then its the ladies turn to welcome the Lord home, there is the Arti at the doorsteps of the home and even the bearers of the paat are treated like heroes, suddenly the lights go on and the decorations come to life as the Lord of the world takes his place in your home. There are special rangolis all around and rangolis are usually of two types, the freestyle, sanskar bharati and the dotted ones which emphasize on symmetry, its fun for the kids to fill colors in the rangoli. You know somehow when all this is going on, the size of the house never matters, someone rightly said: “jagah ghar me nahi, dil me hone chaiye “.

Belagavi’s very own Ganesha carnival

There is another very important entity in the pooja and that’s the bhatjis or pandits and its the best time of the year for them too, it’s actually the start of the season which only ends in May after the marriages are over. Every family in Belagavi has its own Guruji, just like you have a family doctor you have a family priest. The appointments are taken in advance but keeping the time is difficult, the priests are literally in demand and out of stock. Once the pooja begins the priests have to prove their point and we never know what goes on in the pooja for so long, its the arati at the end which is the beacon to call everyone to order, the arati is the time to burst the crackers and is followed by the naivedya, something every child waits for.

Food

There was a unique ritual at our homes, we would get naivedya only after seeing eleven Ganapatis after their poojas and we had to go from one house to another seeing the aratis being performed. On a hindsight, I realize this time was kept for mom to prepare the cumbersome lunch including the modaks.

Baked_Modak_and_Karanji_1600
PC: archanaskitchen.com

Ganapati is actually a great foodie and that necessitates that the naiwedya be delicious. There are different naivedyas and prasads, you have whole course meals, you have the small Prasads with the thrice daily Aratis and then there are sweets which are pre prepared including the Chaklis and Chiwda, all, in all its a foodies delight.

Belagavi’s very own Ganesha carnivalBelagavi’s very own Ganesha carnival

The most essential dish in the naivedya is the modak. The modak comes in different types, there is the saucy boiled ones, the sugary fried ones, the ones with jaggery and the ones with coconut. You can make out a good cook on the number and perfection of the pleats on the modak, served hot with ghee you just can’t stop at eating one.

Belagavi’s very own Ganesha carnival

You have a variety of sweets though and you need not stick to modak, the traditional have ladoos, karanji and barfis while the others have sweets like cashew modaks which serve as prasad.

We also have this special Panchakhadya which essentially consists of five ingredients, well atleast five with no upper limit, you have dry fruits, jaggery, coconut, dalh, poha mixed together and the result is really yumm. Ganapati just loves this and we being bhakts cannot be different.

On saptami there is Khatkhata, which is a veg dish prepared from tubers and shoots, its like the Belagavi version of Italian Ballito di Verdure, steam boiled veg and greens which tastes yumm. Its quiet an exercise going around the market searching for these edible vegetables.

There actually exists in some households in Belagavi the ritual called undri served in honor of mushakraj, he is given non veg naivedya, well how can we ignore the Gods vehicle and since he requires more proteins it has to be mutton. The custom is to cover Ganapati with a curtain while this is done, but I am sure the Lord sees it all.

Games

There is another very exciting ceremony for the women of the house, Manglagauri, its a day women pray, chat, fast, gossip and yes play. The games are called phugadi and its actually a dance in circles with traditional songs, teasing each other yet happy. It’s their own kitty party. It’s not an easy thought and women have to be agile to play.

Another thing dear to the Lord is the flowers and being so close to the rains the gardens are in full bloom, red flowers are the favorite of Ganapati, especially the hibiscus flowers kept with the blades of grass called durva, then there is the kevda and Jasmine and the list goes on and on. The entire day is spent is meeting friends, relatives and showing them your Ganu and the decoration. You get so used to waking up early to put on the lights and sleeping late looking at the decoration, you sometimes wish it remains for ever.

Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav

A carnival is not however a carnival if its restricted to your home, right. Belagavi is no different, the mantaps in the city can give the best a run for their money. Belagavi is the only other place apart from Pune where Shri Balgangadhar Tilak himself started the Ganesh Utsav. There are literally hundreds(384 last year) of mantaps and each one has Ganesha in a different form, its a delight to watch. This reminds me of the picnics we had, every evening and especially on weekends, we went to see the different forms of Ganesh and the decorated mantaps, there was a snack prepared by mom which we carried along in case we got hungry, then again there was bhel, churmure, pop corn available outside too. These picnics happen today too. There are huge crowds all over the city with people thronging the Mantaps, children enjoy this the most. We had the city divided into days so we did not miss a single mantaps. There are also these school going kids who cycle around the city visiting the pendals. Somehow you don’t feel tired waking or cycling round the city when it comes to this festival. The mantaps also give a stage to emerging talents in the galli, and it is the only chance you could get to a mike. You can dance, sing, mimicry and perform dramas, the kids practice hard to come on stage.

ganesh-darshan-belagavi-16Every happiness however has to come to an end, and so does the festival, the Gauri’s go first on the fifth day and then the countdown starts, the paat soon becomes empty and you realize that the guest is going back to his home, there is a void felt for so many days after this, the home appears empty as if a member of the family is missing, the day of visarjan is one day we never want to see. In Belagavi however we send Ganu home in style, its the end of the carnival and we give it a fitting finale. The visarjan procession in the city is famous and is a fantastic display of culture and art. The entire district comes down to see the glory of the Lord, there is pop corn, alipak, peanuts and so many more things you can relish while enjoying the procession.

” Ganapati Bappa Moraya, Pudhcya warshi laukar ya”, yes the love for Ganesha is so strong that the city keeps hoping this carnival is never ending.
