Pot holes acche hote hai!

$

By Dr. Madhav Prabhu

Disclaimer: Read this only if you have humor and understand sarcasm.

Pot holes are good, yes and let me present a perspective to this.

Firstly potholes are a parallel economy. Well, you don’t agree right, then let me explain. Potholes appear every year and when the rain goes off, there are tenders called for repair of the roads. The engineers are called to design the road, the shape, the inclination of the road and all that, so that the roads are safe and they do the job with so much love, that they are blinded by it and forget that the roads are meant for vehicles and not for a moonwalk.

sanchayni-pot-holesThen come the contractors who make the roads and they employ so many workers, the making of the road has only one prerequisite that it needs to have potholes when it rains. It’s an arrangement between the authorities and the contractors so that both have work to show the next year. Then there is the accounts settled, the commissions and here we have all the stakeholders working together like a team. Now imagine there is no pothole, what will happen, no work for engineers, the contractors have no tenders, the daily wage road repair guy has no work, the corporators have no work, the politicians have no work and taxpayers money will go in fix deposits or lie unutilized, what a loss to the taxpayers if its not going in the pothole. So much loss of employment, now you can imagine why the everyone wants pot holes right.

The effect on the economy does not stop here, you need more shock absorbers, more tyres, more spare parts, this boosts the manufacturing industry and in turn the automobile industry. It causes spinal and orthopedic problems and this boosts the medical and pharmaceutical industry. The pothole is the answer to a dying economy.

pot1

We elect politicians to work, even if it is double work. If work was done of good quality we paralyze the ways and means to run this parallel economy which provides so much employment. There are British landmarks in the city and nothing happened to them for years, but I guess the British were selfish, they wanted to carry all the money home so they ensured that their construction lasts like the old railway over bridge, imagine the money they saved and stole from us, they never repaired it. They made quality over bridges to deny the people of jobs every year, we are free from the British and now the taxpayers money needs to spend every year so that so many people get jobs from the potholes.

Secondly, potholes prevent accidents.
The road from Dharmveer Sambahji Circle to GIT had one accident every day for the last one year but, down came the rains and the potholes gave their darshan and low there are absolutely no accidents at all. Potholes are saving more lives than the traffic police who can now concentrate on helmets and collect fines. If the potholes were not repaired last year, there would be no accidents at all. Vehicles just cannot over speed and you can even walk faster than a car, would the speeding rickshaws ever do this without the potholes. The potholes are adding so much joy that now you don’t feel like putting meters to rickshaws, or even wait for signals. When we search for the road in between the potholes we become cautious drivers thus taking care of our own lives, we don’t need police to tell us to wear helmets our friends the dear pot holes forces us to do it.

pot3Potholes are romantic, yes you have to believe me. Remember when you were in college and went on a bike with your honey, or even when you were newly married and your wife was smaller than your bike, you drove slowly, you suddenly accelerated and braked and a slight touch was so romantic, hmmm all this is only for the romantic and not the domestic people. But potholes force romance, you have to spend more time together on the roads, there are small dhakkas which bring you closer to each other and there is that moment between the rider and the pillion where romance is on the air. In fact the road invites you, encourages you to be as close and even if you fall you can spend some romantic time in the hospital taking care of each other, would you otherwise find time to look after each other.

Potholes are good for the environment, firstly they are excellent sites for rainwater harvesting, the water otherwise would run into the gutters and wash away, but pot holes provide sites where water is stored and harvesting can be done to increase the groundwater levels. They can act as temporary sites for tree plantation and increase the greenery. People avoid vehicles, three is less smoke so there is less pollution. I wonder if there was anything other than the pothole which can do this.

pot-hole-garland

Potholes make you health conscious
, you don’t want to take your vehicles and damage them so you decide to walk, actually, you reach your destination faster when you walk so it forces you to exercise. There is weight loss, decrease sugars and no need for a diet, you keep missing site of potholes and this forces you to get your annual eye checkup done. Potholes are like yogic gurus they test your patience and make you calm, it’s like anger management. Even your doctor cannot give you so much incentive for exercise.

pot-holebus
PC: Mustafiz

Potholes are photo opportunities. Yes, the media loves potholes and pictures related to potholes. Ruling parties can take publicity by promising to destroy the potholes, the opposition can take publicity wit potshots at the ruling party for creating potholes, aspiring politicians can get photo ops by doing dharnas at the potholes, potholes gives everyone publicity without any differentiation, potholes are truly democratic and secular in their nature. Imagine politics without potholes.

Now, are you convinced potholes are good! I don’t understand why people are after the corporation and the elected representatives when the pot holes are so important to our lives. But the politicians really care, they know that potholes are good for us, they only think of our overall development and that’s why they encourage potholes, when will we learn to acknowledge their silent sacrifices.

The Project road under consideration starts at NH-4 Junction. Project road is part of Raichur-Bachi road (SH-20) from NH-4 junction to Ashoka circle, from there project road deviates on Khade bazaar road passing through circuit house ending at CBT. Project road passes through four junctions namely Gandhinagar junction, Mahantesh Nagar junction, Ashoka circle junction and vegetable market Junction. A very high density of mixed traffic flows through the project area.

The draft Smart city plan mentions – FLYOVER Ashoka Circle (NH4 Junction to CBT via Raichur Bachi Road) – 129 Crores

Project road passes through heavily built-up area. The right of way varies from 30m to 35m throughout. The existing road is 4 lane divided carriageway. Bus and LCV type of traffic is dominating in this section. Due to heavy flow of mixed traffic in Ashoka circle and Mahantesh Nagar junction circle, many traffic jams occur causing inconvenience to road users, delay and fatal accidents leading to death of road users.

flyover-ashoka-cirleThe Authority seeks the services of qualified firms for preparing a feasibility Report for CONSTRUCTION OF FLYOVER FROM NH-4 TO CENTRAL BUS TERMINUS VIA ASHOK CIRCLE APPROACHES IN BELAGAVI CITY. The feasibility Report shall also include a pre-feasibility study for other alternatives to flyover for smooth flow of traffic.

ashok-circle-flyover belagavi

The Consultant shall assess the traffic demand for the Flyover Projects for a period of 10 (ten) years, 15 (fifteen) years and 20 (twenty) years respectively based on analysis of traffic counts, trend growth and growth in the influence area of the Project flyover. Normally, an annual growth rate of 5% (five per cent) shall be assumed. Any variation would have to be justified with reasons, including analysis of past trends.

(b) Based on the assessment of the traffic demand on the various sections of the Project, the Consultant shall provide a broad assessment of the year in which six-lanes may be required. The Consultant shall also provide sensitivity analysis due to change in assumption of traffic projections.

Music culture is essential for personality development and social harmony, says music teacher Mahendra

by Vijaykumar Patil

Parents need to expose their children to creative art forms for their overall growth and protect them from social deviations, says Belagavi-based music teacher and Ex-Serviceman Mahendra Ishwar Bannakanwar.Music teacher Mahendra Eshwar Bankannawar Sa Re Ga Ma School of Music.

Music teacher Mahendra Eshwar Bankannawar with his students at his  Sa Re Ga Ma School of Music.Music is a wonderful form of expression of feelings, which can be communicated even by a blind person.  Music and other art forms enjoy very high respect and appreciated all over the world without any bias and therefore, links heterogeneous global communities. It is enjoyed by all ages, even plant, and animals. When we appreciate music or an art form, we become comfortable in developing a bond with the musician and his or her coming from a different land and culture becomes irrelevant.  Though people have their own likings on type of art or music, the common element is that they all enjoy listening to music and appreciate and enjoy the art form.

Yes, art forms like music unites communities irrespective of their nationality, race, religion, caste or creed. Under the growing social tensions and hatred on race, religious and caste considerations, music becomes more important as an education which needs to be inculcated among the citizens, right from the stage where they are young and unbiased i.e., during their childhood so as to keep them uninfluenced by divisive thoughts and prevent social deviations, he says.

Music teacher Mahendra Eshwar Bankannawar with his students at his  Sa Re Ga Ma School of Music.
Music teacher Mahendra Eshwar Bankannawar with his students at his  Sa Re Ga Ma School of Music.

The best thing to do is to include music or any art form as a compulsory subject in school education system, which will also open up job opportunities to trained students of music and arts. Presently, music is not a compulsory subject as of now but taught only in a few schools so as to develop a good cultural hobby among the young children. Yet, it is possible for the school administrations to introduce Indian classical (music and dance)/light classical music, which is fundamental for all forms of Indian music at least as an extra-curricular activity by earmarking at least two to three hours in a week. This will help children to learn basics of Indian music and grow at least as connoisseurs if not a performers: Since music and dance are performing art forms, both need audience and connoisseurs to appreciate.

Mr.Bannakanwar, who was serving India’s civil defense(Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre) in Belagavi from 1991, voluntarily retired in 2013 and took music as his principal avocation. He is the son of late Eshwar Bankannawar, who was with Indian army and was injured while transporting a contingent of soldiers during Indo-Pak war in 1971 and subsequently shifted to civil defence wing.

Mahendra cannot forget the day when his father bought a harmonium for him. It was on Oct.31, 1984 and the unfortunate news of the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi reached him while he was carrying the harmonium on a bicycle from the music shop to his house in Belagavi city. He started learning basics of Indian classical music from his Guru Pt.Vinayak Shrisat of Vengurla in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. His urge to know more and understand the dynamics of both Indian classical and Western music turned him to become an ardent student – studying and understanding both theory and practical application of the two forms of music.

He is 45 years old now, but one of the most honest and truly dedicated music teachers the author of this story has come across. He has evolved his own teaching methodology, which makes even the most complex aspects simpler and easier even for the learners.

He is presently teaching harmonium, vocal, tabla (Hindustani classical and light classical) besides, piano/keyboard, guitar, and violin in both western and India music systems at his ‘Sa Re Ga Ma School of Music’ situated in Laxmi Nagar of Ganeshpur in Belagavi city. He has restrained from making music teaching a commercial proposition and teaches even free to those who could not afford. He is also teaching music to the children of Kittur Rani Channamma Sainik School for Girls at Kittur, about 50 km from Belagavi city.

A. No, both these conditions relate to the lens of the eye and not the cornea. In fact, people who have been successfully operated for cataracts or glaucoma or even retinal detachments can also donate their eyes after death. In fact there have been instances of those who have received a corneal transplant themselves donating their corneas

Q. What conditions render the cornea unfit for donation?

A. Corneas of patients suffering from AIDS, rabies, syphilis, tetanus, septicaemia and certain viral diseases are considered unfit for use for transplant purposes.

Q. What about diabetes, hypertension or cancer?

A. People with these conditions can also donate their eyes. Eyes from a cancer patient are not used for transplant only if the cancer had a blood borne spread.

Q. How quickly should eyes be taken after death?

A. As soon as possible, but eyes can be removed up to 6 hours after death. However, in places where the climate is hot such as most parts of India, a shorter duration, preferably 2 to 4 hours after death is advisable.

Q. Is it necessary to transport the donor to the hospital after death?

A. No, eye banks/ eye collection centres have their own people who will come to the donor’s home or place of death and take the eyes.

Q. What is to be done when a relative expires?

A. 1. Close the eye lids of the deceased, put off any overhead fans, to prevent drying of the cornea. However, if there is an air-conditioner, switch it on, if possible.

2.Cover the closed lids with moist cotton wool (if readily available in the house, otherwise do not bother).

3. Call your eye specialist and the trained people will come to your doorstep and collect the eyes.

Most importantly, the immediate family of the deceased will be greiving at that point in time, so it is the duty of the relatives, close friends, family doctors or any well wisher to suggest eye donation to the family members.

What is Corneal Transplant ?

The cornea is the transparent front portion of the eye. It is the first focusing element of the eye. IT carries the light into the eye and focuses it on the retina and that is how we can see clearly. If the cornea becomes opaque light cannot pass through it and the person becomes blind.

Cornea can become opaque due to infections, injuries, lack of proper post-operative care, malnutrition, and also due to congenital or hereditary reasons. This loss of the vision is referred to as “corneal blindness”. Corneal blindness can affect children and adults and can affect both eyes making them blind.

In such people, replacing the cornea ( transplant ) with a clear cornea donated by the donor can help that blind person to see the world.

Q. Is the whole eye used for transplant?

A. No, only the thin transparent layer in front, called the cornea is used for transplantation. Only those with corneal blindness are benefitted by this procedure.

Q. How is a Corneal Transplantation done ?

A circular portion of the opaque cornea is removed from the center . A matching circular area is removed from the center of a healthy, clear donor cornea and fixed into position.

Q. Does the human body reject the transplanted donor’s cornea? How successful are corneal transplants?

A. The human cornea does not have any blood supply, hence the risk of rejection is very low. Rejection, if it does occur can be suppressed by timely medication. In general, the chances of success are greater than 80%.

How will it be to live without eyesight for a day? I guess most of us don’t even want to think of it. We can only imagine how it would be to live without eyesight. Our world consists of things big or small but colorful. We see shapes and we recognize people or anything else because of our eyesight. However, not all of us are lucky to have this asset.

Dr Kodkany’s Eye Centre is the only Eye Hospital in Belagavi, in the private sector to get permission from the Government of Karnataka under the HOTA ( Transplantation of Human Organ and Tissues Act ) for Corneal transplants.

The Team of Dr. Kodkany’s Eye Centre requests you take the part in this initiative and join us in this Eye Donation Drive.

As per the prices announced under the daily dynamic pricing regime by the state-run Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), fuel prices continued to rise across the country on Saturday as well.

The surge in fuel prices is largely due to the rise in the cost of crude oil and the high excise duty levied on the transportation of fuel in the country. London Brent crude oil has breached the $77 per barrel mark, while US West Texas Intermediate is nearly at the $70 level.

Petrol in Belagavi Costs Rs.81.27 while Diesel costs 72.74. As per AAB’s records, the all time high we have recorded was in May 2012, with the price of Petrol at 81.34.

May this All time high could be surpassed tomorrow and we will see an all time high fuel price in Belagavi.

Tarunsagarji Maharaj- The Monk who changed lives

Jain monk Munishri Tarunsagarji Maharaj attained Samadhi by performing Sallekhana (willful fasting unto death) at Delhi today morning. Known for his short but impactful discourses and quotes, his books named ‘Kadve Pravachan’ have been bestsellers for years. His most famous quote would be “I want to bring God out from the temples to the town squares” received lot of flak.

But what he actually meant was that common people, who worship Gods in the temples and then come out and indulge all sorts of vice, must remember God at their homes, shops, businesses, everywhere. He was the one who said that everyone can become God through good deeds. His departure brings back a deluge of memories of the impact that he has left, not just on Jains across India but on every person whose life he touched with his revolutionary words. No wonder then that he is called Krantikari and Rashtrasant. Jain munis follow a strict regime in their life, where they discard clothes, have food only once in a day that too standing, only as much as fills their cupped palms, sleep on thin bamboo mats and walk barefoot without halting at any place for more than four days except during Chaturmas (rainy season).

It is this strict discipline and austere life that is just part of the hardships that they endure in a mission to cleanse their soul through detachment. Tarunsagarji Maharaj brought about a revolution, especially among the Jain community.

He graciously accepted to conduct the Chaturmaas (4 months in the monsoons when Jain monks do not travel and stay at one place performing rituals and studying religious texts) at Belagavi in 2005. Those 4 months literally changed the lives of people in this part. His Sunday special pravachans and special discourses would be attended by thousands of people. Many would recall that it was the same year when Belagavi district faced torrential rains and subsequent flood. The Jain community was already running a community kitchen for thousands of people attending the chaturmaas discourses. Upon the request from the district administration, and under the directions of the Chauturmass Committee, Bharatesh Education Trust, Gomatesh and other institutions appealed to its students to bring food packets. Within a few hours, students brought in 20000 food packets and another 30000 were packed at the community kitchen and all these 50000 packets were airlifted to be dropped in flood-affected regions of Athani, Ugar, Ainpaur, etc. A score of people who benefitted from this timely help then went on to call up and thank for the assistance.

Another fond memory of his Belagavi stay was his appeal to the people to seek forgiveness during the Dashlakshan festival and the last day of Kshamavali. Many people simply stood up and sought pardon from the public. Another fond memory is that of his discourse at the MLIRC, which, he was perhaps the first Jain monk to address. At that time in 2005 when it was raining very heavily, the organizers were worried about the open air address in the rains. However, he was unfazed and as he set forth walking towards Shani mandir, miraculously, the rains stopped. In spite of an assurance from the Station Commandant that the jawans would be seated come rain or sunshine, it did not rain till he was done with his discourse. Tarunsagarji also administered a vow to the school students at the Gomatesh grounds that they shall not commit suicide and lead a good life.

I was fortunate to have been able to accompany him on his walk from Belgaum to Dharwad and from Hosdurg to Shravanbelagola, for a distance of almost 200 kms as he proceeded towards the holy town for the 2006 Mahamastakabhishek. His was a special presence at that year’s Mahamastakabhishek and still remains etched in devotees’ minds.

In his departure, we have lost a leading light who guided people towards moral fortitude. His words, books, and thoughts shall forever remain with us.

Bittoo: Bapu.

Bapu: Yes Bittoo.

Bittoo: A message with a picture of actor Nana Patekar has gone viral on WhatsApp Bapu.

Bapu: What is it Bittoo?

Bittoo: It suggests people seek financial help from richest temples like Tirupati Balaji, Shirdi Sai Baba and Siddhi Vinayak to provide relief to people affected by the natural calamity in Kerala Bapu. Further, it also suggests that the treasures filled with huge money given as offering to the God by the people and that it was timely to use the people’s money to provide relief to the calamity-hit people of Kerala and Madikeri.

Bapu: Hummmmm! Seems to be a good suggestion.

Bittoo: But, will the God listen to this suggestion Bapu?

Bapu: I don’t know Bittoo.

This is a citizen-centric new column, wherein the author(Bitto) is an ordinary, politically unaffiliated common man of the city who in his/her inimitable approach takes up various issues with the Bapu’s soul! Apparently, the interaction between them portrays ironies of sorts encountered by the common man and others in the city in a lighter vein. The author’s name will not be disclosed to the readers as he/she represents the common man of the society. This column aims at creating awareness and sensitising cross sections of our city on various issues of public concern only but in a lighter vein without holding any contempt against any institution or individual.
