Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy confirmed that the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) will not be bifurcated as proposed in the budget speech.

Instead, an institute superior to any Indian Institute of Technology will come up soon in Hassan, reports the Hindu.

There was a stiff resistance from the people of Belagavi and North Karnataka over this VTU split and on Saturday a huge rally was taken out in which all leaders from all political parties, seers, students and business associations participated and showcased a show of strength and unity.

save-vtu-rallySpeaking after laying foundation stones for the construction of hospitals in Hassan, Mr. Kumaraswamy referred to the opposition to the plan by people of north Karnataka. “They are thinking that we are bifurcating VTU to benefit the southern part of the State. But we do not have any such intention, and I have decided to drop the idea,” he said, reports the Hindu.
