Rajyotsava Awards, the second-highest civilian honor of the State of Karnataka. The award is conferred annually by the Government of Karnataka on the occasion of the establishment of the State on 1 November.

Shivaji Kagnikar speaking after he got the lifetime achievement award 2013

He was awarded the D. Devaraj Urs Award for 2018 and also he was awarded the AAB’s Belgaumite of the year Lifetime Achievement award 2013.

In 2013 AAB had awarded Shri Kagnikar with the lifetime achievement award.

About Shivaji Kagnikar:

A shepherd by birth, a Gandhian by choice, a highly sensitive educator by default and a justice seeker by genetic compulsion, meet Shivaji Kagnikar the man who is spreading literacy and also empowered the citizens of Kattanbhavi village to sustain their lives being ecologically friendly. During his school days, he was inspired by Sane Guruji, a great thinker, and promoter of literacy and he decided he too will have to take this route at some point in life. The village well would go dry mid-summer and people used to get water on the rationing basis. With no employment and little agricultural activity, each one was depending on money lenders and the many were addicted to liquor.

The Rajyotsava awards are presented in the capital of Karnataka, Bengaluru by the Chief Minister of the State. Each award carries an amount of Rs. 1,00,000, a 20-gram gold medal and a citation.

He can still be seen in his Khadi half pant and shirt going on his cycle, which he has being doing for ages now.

His life was never easy, from the very beginning experienced discrimination from early childhood as his he was considered to be of a lower caste. He believes in Gandhian principles of frugal living and simplicity.
During his school days he was inspired by Sane Guruji, a great thinker and promoter of literacy and he decided he too will have to take this route at some point in life.

The villages around Kattanbhavi are now self reliant in terms of water and other resources just because of the commitment and tenaciousness for the past thirty years.

The village well would go dry mid summer and people used to get water on the rationing basis. Literally they used to get into the well using ladder and fill water by hand. With no employment and little agricultural activity each one was depending on money lenders and the many were addicted to liquor. Many were even working as bonded labourers to clear their loans.
At this time Shivaji Kagnikar along with Ram Apte, Sadashivrao Bhosle took meetings and explained to the villagers what can be done to get them out of this menace along with importance of water shed management and how water management will one day accomplish all their dreams.
A few villagers were taken to Anna Hazare’s village Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmad Nagar by Jana Jagran the NGO which was helping him in this activity. Situation of Ralegan Siddhi was very similar to that of Kattanbhavi and hence if a model worked there, a similar model should work here as well was the thought. Massive plantation was taken up on govt land, trenches were dug by alongside the village using indigenous methods (Continuous Contour Trenches)Jan Jagaran NGO came forward with financial support on this front. About 1 lakh trees were planted in the trenches and with time a committee was formed so that the trees would be saved. With time the only well in the village started to recoup water and also the ground water level increased dramatically. A pond near the well now serves the livestock which has water all the year round. With the growth of trees many species of birds and even wild boars, peacocks, have made it their home. With good grazing grounds and also good agricultural activity due to availability water the village came out of the hands of the money lenders. Even co-operative societies working in the milk sector have started operations there. Each family has cattle and each one has his own Gobar gas plant. Starting with 30 liters of milk collection a day it has now crossed 1400 liters a day.

Once the Kattanbhavi village had large illiteracy but now it has an Anganwadi and primary school upto 7th Standard and even night school.

Shivaji Kagnikar later started to work on similar lines to upgrade the village of Ningenhatti. 3 lakes were dug and over 1 lakh saplings planted. Nigenhatti which was more of a barren land a decade ago is now a completely full of trees of various fruits and agricultural activity has also grown tremendously.

With simple thoughts and practices Shivaji Kagnikar has changed the fate of these villages and even today he is on the same mission telling the youngsters about why the conservation of environment is very important.

AllAboutBelgaum salutes this great man and his vision.

Features of Linke-Hofmann Busch Coaches (LHB Coaches):-

Indian Railways have been transporting passenger traffic mainly through coaches of ICF design. To overcome the limitations in terms of Speed potential, Heavy corrosion, Poor riding comfort&Wearing of parts in the under gear of coaches of ICF design, Indian Railways is suit change over the LHB coaches.

LHB_coachThese coaches are produced by Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala. These coaches were first commissioned in the year 2001. LHB coaches are far superior to ICF coaches with respect to passenger comfort, safety, speed, corrosion, maintenance and aesthetics. These coaches are also longer as compared to ICF design resulting into more carrying capacity.

The benefits from these types of coaches are as under:-

i. Higher carrying capacity – These coaches are about 2 meters longer than ICF coaches. With this extra length, two additional rows of chairs in chair cars or one additional bay in sleeper coaches can be accommodated.

ii. The weight of LHB coach is lesser as compared to ICF design coaches. LHB coach can accommodate 72 passengers as compared to 64 in conventional AC III Tier Coach. Thus giving better pay to tare ratio.

iii. Low corrosion – There will be low corrosion of LHB coaches due to extensive usage of Stainless Steel and better design and manufacturing techniques.

iv. Low Maintenance – Replacement and removal of sub-systems will be required only after one million kilometers.

v. LHB Coaches have aesthetically superior interiors with FRP panels for sidewall and roof. They can be removed easily for maintenance, resist water seepage and are wear-resistant;

vi. There are no visible screws inside the passenger compartments.

vii. Better passenger comfort: Better Riding Index has been specified as compared to conventional ICF coaches.

viii. LHB coach offers better passenger safety due to:

Use of fire retardant materials for furnishing.

Provision of emergency open able windows.

Vertically interlocked Centre Buffer Couplers.

ix. LHB coach offers better passenger amenities due to :

More space for pantry;

Individual reading light in chair car;

Ergonomically designed chairs with reclining back rest

CAUTION: Belagavi is under Construction

$

There was huge bump and sound which made me realize I am nearing Belagavi near the KLE hospital, it was a sigh of relief to reach the home town and with such a bumping welcome, it was time to get down at Belagavi the city which is under construction.

Yes! The entire city is under construction, thanks to the Smart city mission and the smart officials who have planned it in such a smart way that about 10-15 smart road works are in progress at the same time and none are complete.

This year the rain gods showed their fury which washed away the little tarmac that was laden on the so-called well-laid tarmac roads of the city.
Now you name one road which has not potholes (congress road does not have but does have some bumps as it was white-topped).

white-toppingMandoli road must be handed over to UNESCO and convert it into a heritage site where for over 30 months a 2 km stretch of road is not made. God knows why smart people cant make one motor-able road of anything but make it motorable.

mandoli-roadWe have HESCOM, Smart City digging for laying UG cables and then the Megha Gas for gas pipelines, and yes don’t forget the water pipe and the water board’s Drainage pipes all over the city.

Many would say why crib then, the city is getting better and there will be a period when there will be trouble for citizens.

True, citizens’ money is been spent on the white topping, decorative lamps and what not but the common man is not able to get one good steady ride on the roads.

Some citizens on their own have started to fill the potholes in their area so that they can commute safely.

pothole-fill
Most of the roads are to be white-topped and hence those huge potholes are now ignored by the PWD and City corporation as they can save that much funds as the same will have to be spent by the Smart city mission.
The third gate RoB is also under construction which has loads of dirt on the road now, again “Kuch Pane ke Liye Kuch Khona Padta hai”.
The city will be in this under-construction mode for the next 2-4 years, so brace yourselves and drive safe.

The MES observes Black Day on Rajyotsava day protesting against the non-inclusion of Belagavi and other places in Maharashtra.

Smart city work on Mandoli road claims one life

One person died on Mandoli road on Friday night at around 11.15 pm as he slipped and fell on the open iron bars out for the gutter.

The deceased has been identified as Daulat Davale ages 51 who was returning from work and was going to his home at 6th cross Dwarka nagar on his cycle.

He supposedly slipped and fell down in the gutter where the iron rods entered his body.

He was working in Prakash theater for many years and was returning home after work.

This is not a one-off case but this time it was a fatal accident where one innocent life has been lost due to the negligence of the smart city officials.

mandoli-roadThe family members must file a case under IPC 304 A – Causing death by negligence.—Whoever causes the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

For over 2 years the said road is under construction and is one of the worst roads in town with open gutters, open bars no barricading or any signs of caution or danger.
With no street lights as well it is a ride to hell in the night and exactly this has claimed one life.

Sharing these images, his youngest son said that he has lost his father and he won’t come back, but the officials, contractors who are involved in this must be punished.

Nitin Chandrakant Desai a noted Indian art director and production designer of Indian cinema visited Belagavi on Sunday and he has been given the job of building an Aviation museum along with an Art museum in Belagavi.

Abhay Patil MLA South had envisaged this idea of an Aviation museum in town under the smart city project.
He then contacted Nitin Desai who has a special love for Belagavi. Desai has readily agreed and visited the spot at Vaccine Depot the Glasshouse and its surroundings where the Aviation museum and Art museum will be made.

Desai categorically said that none of the trees will be cut and all trees will be used in such a way that they become a part of the project itself.

The Aviation museum will be built in the vacant glasshouse in Vaccine Depot and the art museum will be built next to it on the open ground and both will be interconnected as one museum.

Aviation Museum will have both static installations which will tell the story of Aviation along with state of the art digital installations which will be interactive. So one will not require a guide but the digital installations will have aids that will give information about the installation.

Nitin Chandrakant Desai belagaviThe Art Museum will also have digital installations that will be interactive and these can be updated as and when required. Also, there would be a space for local artists to showcase their art and also give demos of paintings or sculpting, etc.

Desai made a detailed presentation to the MD Smart city, Mr.Sashidhar Kurer recently.

Desai said, I plan to work on this soon and once I take up a project I can finish it before time. This museum will be one of its kind in Asia and people will come searching for this museum. This will become the tourist attraction for Belagavi.

We have learned from our sources that a Smart city is also in favor of such a project rather than smaller projects. This will give a new dimension to tourism in the city.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had a meeting with MoSR Suresh Angadi and other railway officials and has given his approval for the Dharwad-Kittur-Belagavi new railway line.

In the meeting chief minister gave in-principle approval to provide land free of cost & also share the cost with the Railways in respect of the new railway line between Belagavi & Dharwad via Kittur.

In principle approval for Dharwad-Kittur-Belagavi new railway line- BSYAs the present Dharwad-Belagavi railway line passes through Londa, it takes more time to travel by rail than by road. It has been a long-standing demand of public and elected representatives of Karnataka to lay a direct line between Dharwad and Belagavi preferably via Kittur. To implement this work, the Final Location Survey for Dharwad-Kittur-Belagavi (90Km) is now included in the Budget 2019-20.

The proposed new railway line passes through Dharwad, Kittur, and Hirebagewadi to reach Belagavi. The distance between Belagavi and Dharwad will reduce by 31 Kms once this new line is laid. This will benefit the public of Dharwad and Belagavi, making the journey between these two smart cities easier and quicker. It will also enable the people of Belagavi to reach Bengaluru, the capital city of State of Karnataka directly.
