SWEAR BY WATER: AARATI BHANDARE

$

0

It’s all about ‘Thirst’. Some people enter into deep wells to quench their thirst or some walk miles bare feet. For Aarati Bhandare, the ‘thirst’ was to get clean drinking water for herself and everyone around, which is supposedly a birthright. Apparently, she lived in an area which had a lot of water but not a drop feasible for drinking. She remembers her childhood days when fetching drinking water was a big family task. It wasn’t available at the doorstep like it is today. Now that drinking water is easily available, people don’t value it enough, is her major concern. Making people aware of the importance of every drop of water was added to her ‘thirst’. This ‘thirst’ made her abandon her degree in bachelor of dental surgery, her decent job, and designation in her family business. In 2015 she started her journey, study and struggle to quench this ‘thirst’.

Practice before you Preach. Or even before that, Study before you Practice and Preach. With the help of KUWS Belagavi, she visited the nearby dams to study purification plants, their processes, and supply system. She got trained for the basics of rainwater harvesting from Mr. A R Shivkumar who is known as the RWH man of India. She attended seminars in metro cities to study the latest trends and products invented to save water. Books, blogs, web links, articles, magazines and the study came from all the possible sources. After the study, she started Practicing and now was the time to Preach.

aarti-bhandre

Awareness was not as easy as imagined. People mocked at her by saying that water is a natural resource and nature has its own way of balancing things. Some mocked at her by saying we had enough rains last season, why is this water-saving gyaan? The reason for such a mentality was that people limited their concerns to themselves. Water is available for my family, my neighbor, and my relatives so why attend such water-saving lectures? She focused on young brains and started awareness programs in schools and colleges. Today, she has covered almost all the schools and colleges in Belagavi, social elite clubs, ladies groups, corporate companies, business colleges and now made her ways into the surrounding rural areas. She was invited by the IIMT College, New Delhi in 2018, to deliver a talk to the students on world water day. The awareness is made through lectures, songs, poetry, ppt, blogs, painting competitions, pasting posters, hanging banners etc. She has been doing this awareness under the banner of ‘Save Water Save Life’ which is now renamed as ‘Boondh’ with the tagline, Life in Every Drop.

We all swear in the name of the most important person like mom and dad. Water is so important for Aarati that she swears in the name of Water, hence the title ‘Swear By Water’. She whispers ‘Save Water’ in the ears of a newborn baby on his or her naming ceremony. She says each drop of water should be respected in the same way we respect the holy ‘teerth’ offered at a temple.

Being a responsible citizen it’s our duty not only to wish her best wishes in her awareness activities but also be a part of it. Let’s save and respect every drop of water and help Aarati to quench her thirst.

Each one is quite aware that most saplings planted during the Van Mohotsava are just photo sessions and no one bothers to look at them again. There are exceptions to the same as well like Green Saviour’s and others.

With the summer heat on the rise, a worried group of morning walkers in Vaccine depot have taken the noble job of watering the saplings planted in the Vaccine Depot.

Due to the heat generally, the saplings dry as there very less moisture in the soil.

sapling-savioursThis group of senior citizens are leading the way by watering the saplings in the area for over a month now.

There are several block plantations in the depot and the survival of many of these saplings is difficult during summer.

Vijay Jamble, V G Chougule, R B Patil, M N A Bhat, Bandu Paramshetty, Uday Shidore, Yallappa Parlekar, Prabhakar Kodkini, A K Kulkarni and Acharya Gangur decided that they should start watering the saplings.

They decided to water the saplings on a regular basis until summer ends. Empty plastic bottles were collected and a hole was made in the cap while the bottom was sliced off. A water tap in the vicinity is the source of water, from where water is filled in 5 liter containers and each bottle is filled with water.
With the small hole drops of water keep flowing at the roots of the saplings giving them enough moisture to survive this heat.

Time for the Citizens to make their own manifesto for the forthcoming elections

$

Amidst all the hyper noise around the penultimate electoral process in the country, major political brains came up with a host of promises through their manifesto. We are sure the majority of the promises are purely to lure the aam aadmi to garner votes and succeed to the pole position.

While political parties will release their manifestos promising a bunch of schemes and a host of freebies to citizens ahead of the Loksabha elections and comparison with the charter of demands by various citizens’ groups reveals that parties have fallen short of gauging citizens’ expectations, each time.

We in Belagavi dont have a large civic groups which are active in such initiatives, but it is now the need of the hour that all the citizens, welfare associations, housing societies, NGO’s come together and create a comprehensive manifesto or charter of demands well before time so that once the elections are announced each one is prepared with the Citizens Manifesto.

This manifesto offers a model of participatory, active citizenship, setting out the rights & responsibilities of a citizen in a way that seeks to empower the individual and reinvigorate the body politic. It presents a framework of citizenship that is engaged and egalitarian; where the people – not the state – determine their own futures and work together for the common good. This vision of what citizens can be – and can achieve – alerts us to the limited citizenship we currently experience and to the possibility of something better”.
Peter Tatchell

Elections in Belagavi have various angles which include Caste, language, religion among other common viewpoints. The parties try to divide the citizens and try to lure you with promises which have turned out to be false over the years and after the elections we just cry over.

Citizens manifesto could be broadly divided into –

Governance

Public Health

Accessibility

Mobility and Public Transport

Culture

Heritage

Natural Resource Management

Public Education

Social Justice

Welfare of Elders

Urban Poverty

Animal Welfare

Disaster management

The party manifestos are made for the state and hence may not include some valid points which need to be looked at the local level. The citizens forums can come together and make a wish list of the demands which can be put forth the candidates during the time of elections.

Biddu: Bapu.

Bapu: Yes Bittoo.

Bittoo: SSLC pass/fail politicians seem to be more intelligent than the graduates, post graduates, doctors, engineers, scientists, writers and many others Bapu?

Bapu: Literacy levels are not the sole criteria to judge someone’s intellect and wisdom. But what makes you think so?

Bittoo: I think so because all these highly qualified people vote for these SSLC pass/fail candidates and elect them to parliament and legislatures, pledge their future for five years and expect them to do wonders. Therefore, they must be more intelligent as they motivate us to vote for them Bapu?

Bapu: I don’t know Bittoo.

This is a citizen-centric new column, wherein the author(Bitto) is an ordinary, politically unaffiliated common man of the city who in his/her inimitable approach takes up various issues with the Bapu’s soul! Apparently, the interaction between them portrays ironies of sorts encountered by the common man and others in the city in a lighter vein. The author’s name will not be disclosed to the readers as he/she represents the common man of the society. This column aims at creating awareness and sensitising cross sections of our city on various issues of public concern only but in a lighter vein without holding any contempt against any institution or individual.

Every year March 20 is observed as World Sparrow Day to raise awareness about the bird. The need for marking this day was felt due to the tremendous decrease in its population.

A resident of Belagavi and an active member of the Giants Main, Bhau Killekar has set an example by constructing a special tank on an elevated platform which will make it easier for the birds to quench their thirst.

Many ask to put up a seed dispenser nearby and set out an earthenware bowl with drinking water.
But in this case, Killekar has led by an example and showing his love for the bird has constructed this water tank.

Hopefully, the sparrows and other birds such as bulbuls should come calling, especially if there are no mobile towers in the vicinity.

Want to be a Graduate or Skilled Graduate?

The admission season for the various graduation courses are to begin, and the students must be relaxing and enjoying the fulfillment of 2nd PU Examinations. But in this period it’s sure they are having lighter talks and thoughts with parents, friends regarding which course to pursue next? Based on Individuals dreams and aspirations there is a vast number of courses to choose from.

It’s obvious for a student who has dreamt or has passion towards engineering and medicine to take up the respective stream of education. There are even many instances wherein an engineer or doctor has chosen an unrelated profession and made a successful career in it. In a way, he has followed his passion irrespective of peer pressure or any other reasons. The next preferred graduation courses in the region are BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA, BSW, etc. The number of graduate courses in Health care sector offers a good scope of employment as well as entrepreneurship.

It’s the fact known to everyone that there is a bright future for a student in any stream of studies provided the student does well in the respective courses and the Post graduation course that follows. Before a student chooses a course the student must think of the outcome of the course. No doubt all courses offer graduation degree which makes him eligible for getting jobs in government as well as private sector, appear for Competitive exams etc. And there is a huge gap between Government job applicants and the vacancies. And private jobs are purely based on performance and productivity. The private jobs demand productivity from day one, also reward and appreciate the performers.

Nowadays finding a job even in the private sector is not a cake walk. The important point to understand is does the recruiter finds a graduate eligible? Or can the candidate be productive without training? Hence before choosing the course and the college the students and the parents should observe if a particular course and the college provides requisite skills required to get employed and perform well in the job. A graduate opting for the job initially gets a managerial or supervisory job in the stream of administration, marketing, finance, human resource, production, operations, sales, marketing(online and offline) etc. But does the graduation degree he holds has in any way given him the prior knowledge of the work he would be doing? So that he can break the ice immediately at the job? Even if the student is planning for competitive exams such as IBPS, FDC, KAS, etc is he prepared to perform the task? Though clearing the competitive exam is most important, bur pre acquiring skills doesn’t harm.

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA/BBM) course attempts to give an answer to all the above questions and problems. As the name suggests Bachelor of Business Administration/ Management. The course trains and builds persons administrative, management skills, Leadership skills and builds confidence to take up the task and complete it with responsibility.

Like any other course the University syllabus, internal tests, project works, assignments etc take care of the academic development of the student. Apart from this, there is another part of the BBA course which colleges nowadays are more stress on. And that is the make or break part of the student’s career. That is the “Skill Development”. It is not mandatory by the university, but the demand of the recruiters.

Recruiters nowadays do not spend time and money on training the candidates, especially in the sales and marketing, finance and human resource stream. That’s why they avoid hiring fresh graduates and resort to overburdening the existing employees. Realizing this BBA college across the state, have started giving more importance to skill development. Students are groomed each day with their Group discussion, Presentation, Seminars skills Industry interactions, Industry visits and they are monitored one on one, unlike earlier where students used to perform these activities only during management festivals. The management festivals have been entirely student driven.

Apart from these, the colleges are coordinating with the local businesses and providing hands-on experience in the field of Distributor/Stockiest handling, retailer handling, where they learn about different stock management techniques in practice such as FIFO, LIFO, strategies to prevent stock from expiring, Employee training, motivating techniques followed, Stockbroking etc. And companies are also encouraging such move as they feel there is no better lab to test the performance of the candidate than the real market.

Moreover, BBA is a stream of studies wherein there is a sea of scope to choose a career and get trained as per its needs and step out of the college and start performing. I urge the students to have a thought on the outcome of the course and the training process followed by the colleges before taking a decision.

Lapses in laptop purchase by RCU says Audit Report

Rani Channamma University’s audit report for 2017-18 has found grave procedural lapses in the purchase of laptops. The computers were distributed to SC/ST students studying in post-graduation and PhD students. According to the details in the report, a copy which is available with TOI, the university had bought 592 laptops under SCP/ TSP scheme by spending Rs 2,09,17, 136 (each laptop costs Rs 48,000). The report has raised objections over the cost and procedural lapses. The report says there was no comparative price chart of laptops from different companies while selecting the product of a particular company, reports the Times of India.

The report makes mention of the vendor and how the tender process was executed flouting rules, but the vice-chancellor Shivanand Hosamani said tender procurement was done as per procedures. The audit report has given some suggestions which would be looked into, he said.

The TOI further reports, Before calling the tender notification for purchasing the laptops, a technical committee in the university had finalized the needed technical requirements in the product. The technical details were suitable for laptops from HP and Lenovo. However, on the request of Patil Computers, Belagavi, the committee changed the technical requirements making it suitable for laptops of Dell. The report says, prima-facie, the committee favored Patil Computers by recommending technical details which suit just Dell laptops.

The report also found procedural lapses in the tender notification. According to rules, minimum two-month time must be given for the tender procurements costing more than Rs 2 crore. However, the university called a short-term tender notification on December 8, 2017 giving just one month to the bidders. No prior permission was taken from the authorities concerned for making these changes. At the time of tender opening, the presence of tenderers or one of their representatives is required.

However, the laptop related tender opened without tenderers. According to rules, a third party had to conduct an inspection of the product but this has been done by the technical specification advisory committee of the university itself. The audit report also states many other violations in the purchase of laptops.

Some excerpts of the interview with Madhuri M. Shanbhag :

madhuri-shanbagWhen did you start writing and what was your motivation behind the same?

Well I started late, when my son Manish started going to school, in 1989, I wrote one article and everybody praised it. Then I came to know that I have many more things to tell and the rest is history for me.

Do you remember what you wrote first?

The first article I wrote was a ‘lalitlekh’ on my favorite teacher Prof. V.G. Tilagul.

In all your writings you seem to be influenced by science? Is that because you are a Physics professor?

Yes, science is something I am in love with, but actually, its people which interest me more when it comes to writing. Most of my works are the result of my interest in people. For science, I love to pen influence of science on people.

Agnipankh was a great success story for you, what inspired you to translate that biography into Marathi?

Well, I knew Dr. Kalam as a scientist in composites (smart materials), also the chief of five Indian missiles. When I read a small news item about his autobiography, the son of an illiterate poor boatman of Rameshvar reaching the highest civil honor, ‘Bharat-ratna’ completely on his merit and intelligence, I thought that it must be a very interesting journey. And yes it is. Rests are the details like finding a publisher, who purchased rights and made a contract.

How has been the support of your family towards all your work? You must have to make a balance between home and work and also your writing?

I always feel that if you like to do something, you will find the time. You even don’t mind forgoing your favorite pleasures. My husband Dr. Mohan Shanbhag is proud of me as a writer. Even my kids are very supportive of my writing. I was also taking care of the house. For a long time children, Sansar and my teaching was my first priority.

You have given lectures on so many varied topics and in various places can you narrate some good and bad incidents?

That will be a long answer. But at this point, I will say that good incidence outnumber bad ones.

What do you like to do when you are not working and also not writing?

I love to cook, particularly fish. Then chat with my friends on phone, or netchat with my son and daughter. Surf on the net on my favorite sites. Read a book, well there are umpteen things I can think of.

Are you working on something new these days, what is it another translation or fiction?

I am translating a book on Second World War, ‘Doctors from Hell’ by Vivien Spitz. I write one article ‘Kshitij’ every first Sunday of a month in ‘Saptarang’ (Sunday special of Sakal daily.)

Who are your idols?

Dr. Richard Feynman, (I am writing his biography), Dr.Kalam, JRD Tata, Chandra S. and many more in the field of science. Vijay Tendulkar, Dalavi, Arati Prabhu, G.A. Kulkarni, Shashi Deshpande.

Reading of books has plummeted in the modern world your thoughts on this?

Yes, television, mobiles, and e-revolution have done that. But at least in India, the literacy rate is increasing and very few have access to e-reading. Besides reading percolates in your mind and TV pictures just fly. You don’t remember the scenes you have seen yesterday till you see today’s episode. I do believe that books have a lasting effect on you.

The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) which spearheads the movement of pro-Maharashtra leaders for the merger of Belagavi with Maharashtra has decided to field 101 candidates in the forthcoming Loksabha elections to attract the attention of the whole nation to their demand.

The security deposit will be collected as voluntary donations and then the 101 candidates will file their nominations.

The Belgaum parliamentary constituency, where polling had to be postponed by a month in 1996 due to a record number of independent candidates, 452 and a total of 456. Shri Shivanand Hemappa Koujalgi of Janta Dal won the elections then. All the 452 were fielded by the MES then.

mes-101For the 1996 general election, Nalgonda in Andhra Pradesh crossed all earlier records with 480 candidates in the fray. After this incident, the Election commission increased the security deposit and also changed some norms for the nomination.

All the aspirants for the Gram Panchayat, Taluka Panchayat etc have been asked to file their nominations here as to get a view as to how many voters are behind them.

The MES says it is a form of protest to get the attention of the centre on this long pending issue.
Each EVM machine can hold only 15 names, so if we assume that these 101 and last time there were about 15 so to accommodate 116 names, 8 EVMs will have to be connected to each other.

Rajhunsgad – a fort lost in time

When you are in Belagavi there are two structures which are visible from most part of the city, one is the Rajhunsgad (locally known as Yellur Gad or Yellur Fort) and the Suvarna Vidhan Soudha. The latest addition has also been the Tallest Flag pole.

There would still be many people in the city who would have never been to this unique fort which is at an elevation of around 2,500 feet above sea level, it offers a panoramic view of the Belagavi city from all four sides.

Dr C B Taboji, assistant professor and head of the Department of History at Government First Grade college, K K Koppa, near Belagavi, a member of INTACH and also an authority on forts in Belagavi district, has said that the fort was built by the Ratta dynasty and later rebuilt or renovated in stone by Asad Khan Lari, a Persian noble of Bijapur, while the Belagavi Fort was being built.

The fort mainly served as an outpost of the Belagavi fort, mainly to spot and prevent the enemies attacking from Goa and Karwar areas. The Belagavi Fort and by extension, the Yellur Fort, was controlled by many rulers. Yellur Fort mainly served as a ‘watchtower’ as it allowed one to spot enemies approaching from a great distance due to its elevation.

According to Taboji, the fort has withstood three wars: the first one between the Nawabs of Savanoor and the Peshwas, the second one between the forces of Tipu Sultan and the Peshwas, and the third war between the officials of the Bhimgad Fort and the Rajhunsgad forces. During the British rule, around 100 soldiers would be posted here for the protection of the fort.

Several war weapons, food, and water supply were made available at the fort by the Belagavi rulers for the soldiers’ use. Legend has it that a tunnel from the Yellur Gad is directly connected to Belagavi Fort. A depression covered by thick bushes is seen at the fort and there are loose stones that cover what could have been an entrance to a tunnel.

The fort stands on an interesting topography. Yellur village, for long, has been a part of the fertile plateau located amidst the tapering ends of the Western Ghats surrounding Belagavi city. Areas like Sulebhavi-Balekundri, Ambewadi and Yellur are a part of the fertile soil that produces rich yields of paddy, lentils, vegetables, pulses and many such crops.

The hillock that the fort is built on has about five levels. So, the view of the fort changes as one moves towards the top of the hillock. It can be ascended by foot, which is the best way to experience the historical fort, or by road, which takes you right up to the main entrance of the fort. The soil on the hillock is shining white indicating traces of bauxite, the principal ore of aluminum.

RajhunsgadThe main entrance door of the fort is grand but its design is deceptive. One has to take a turn to enter the door which means that the sentries would have seen you from at least three directions before you stepped in there. An arch flanks the door, which leads to the inside of the fort. Though not very large, the fort could accommodate the soldiers deployed there. A structure that appears to be a granary stands in a dilapidated condition. Also, a structure that looks like the foundation of another building could have been some kind of a settlement for the soldiers.

One of the prominent structures at the fort is the well that is today fed with water from the base through pumps and pipes. It has been properly covered with an iron grill. The steps leading inside the well are sturdy and its inner walls have arches with a proper pulley facility to draw water. Another structure found here is the temple of Shiva. The temple has been renovated recently.

The fort is surrounded by strong walls on all sides, with ample peepholes for the guards. At one point of the fort, you can see a binocular window, through which one guard can watch opposite ends at the same time. Interestingly, the walls have small exit routes where one has to bend and enter in pitch-dark. These routes were probably used to come out of the fort in times of emergency, without alerting enemies who may have breached the fort.

RajhunsgadSmall forts like Yellur Fort may not have splendid tales to tell of battles fought and valour exemplified, but they stand testimony to the fact that such citadels served as check-posts to ensure the safety of a larger population. Awareness about such interesting structures and proper maintenance by the authorities would ensure that the structures stay intact for a long time, telling their own tales of yore.
