The Belagavi City Corporation has urged the Urban Development Department to extend the 5% rebate on property tax payments, but no decision has been made yet. Meanwhile, Bengaluru has already been granted this rebate, drawing criticism over the state government’s seemingly biased approach toward different cities.

An official order dated April 29 extended the 5% rebate for property tax payments in Bengaluru until May 31. In contrast, Belagavi’s proposal for a similar extension remains pending. The Municipal Corporation has submitted its request to the Revenue Department and is expected to follow up again soon. Until a decision is made, residents of Belagavi are left waiting.

Although the Self-Assessment Taxation System has been implemented across all urban local bodies in Karnataka, special provisions and modifications have been applied in Bengaluru. This has raised further concerns over the unequal treatment of cities like Belagavi.

Last year, Belagavi and other cities were granted the 5% rebate only in June, after the full tax payment in May. As a result, those who paid their property taxes in May missed out on the benefit. To avoid a repeat of this issue, citizens and local officials have demanded that the rebate be extended in May itself this year.

Municipal Commissioner Shubha has been actively pursuing the matter with the government. If similar requests are submitted by other municipal bodies in Karnataka, the state may be compelled to respond with a uniform decision.
